Got it!  NotationScene was holding off on some updates because it saw
m_updatesSuspended.  So at that point it had created m_hlayout but left it
at default values, which apparently always gives x as zero.

Fixed by calling resumeLayoutUpdates() manually.  I think that is
generally more correct too.
