It's a nifty thing, but I've never needed it. I guess it was put there to detect users/distros tampering with the source? So if they report a problem and we can't reproduce, we would ask them for the build key to make sure they hadn't changed something? In the five years I've been here, I've not seen it used by anyone to confirm anything.
