Re: [1st] 6100 acting flakey

2005-11-19 Thread GLENSTREK

It probably is a heat problem - it definately lasts longer with the
DOS card removed. I've got a small fan that I might mount in there to
increase the airflow a bit. (or I could watercool it of course ;). Now
that would be a sight to see)

You might also be able to try replacing the fan in the powersupply with one
with a higher CFM rating. Something I was considering before I finally got a
new computer. I may still do it sometime when I have more space to set things
up in.

As it is though the fan is under the power supply, and the vent is under
the hard drive. Can't imagine much air flows under or over the expantion
cards in the corner probably just sits there spinning around if anything.

You can prop up the 6100 case on bottle caps to give it an extra 1/2 inch or
so which will allow better airflow out the bottom. I used cat litter caps. You
could use prescription medication caps, a small block of wood or plastic --
anything to raise the case.

A second thought for cooling is to find one of those clock chipper fans
that press fit into the heat sink. I think they are a standard 40 mm fan thin
enough to press into the heat sink. I have one but can't find it to give an
exact
measurements. Any good electronic supplier should have one for a few dollars.

Just raising the case gives my 6100 with a 300 MHz G3 with an AV card bracket
(similar to the DOS card bracket) sufficient cooling in the summer when room
temps exceed 90 F.

However, since your 6100 still overheats without the DOS card perhaps the
heat sink grease has dried out as mentioned in an earlier post by Jeff. In
that
case following Jeff's suggestions to fix that problem would be a good start.
Good luck -- glen.

Re: [1st] Printer on a network with select 360 and 6100 was Apple talk problems

 Glen
The printer needs to support Ethernet or you will need a
LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge. I used an AsanteTalk bridge when I had
LaserWriter NTX and a LaserWriter 360 connected.

So I will need a AsanteeTalk Bridge, LocalTalk to Ethernet Bridge for the
360.
Tough to find,or can you buy new (probably not) but better to ask!! Are the
bridges powered and any life or death rules about hooking them up so I do not
fry everything
from here to Seattle?

Geoff,
You could try the LEM Swap list or Epay; never know what lurks out there? And
I suspect Asante was not the only company to make a hardware LocalTalk bridge.

Or there is the free Apple LocalTalk Bridge software.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=20679

The download is here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60290

I never used it. I bought the AsanteTalk bridge used for a good price at that
time and the free software seemed a lesser solution for me.

Ken's printer sharing solution sounds good and a lot less complicated than
the Apple LocalTalk Bridge software.

All I can say is see what works for you. Good luck --glen

Re: [1st] PM 6100/66 AppleTalk Problems

2005-09-13 Thread GLENSTREK
In a message Geoffrey Loeffler [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

So glen,
If I run my trusty 6100 G3 off an airport extreme base station, which has a
out going ethernet jack, or for that matter a hub where one connection goes to
the Base Station and the other to the 6100, will all the items that are hooked
up by SCSI and my printer which is connected to the 6100 via the printer
port work, for the other lap tops connected to the base station. Or at worst
transfer the file to be printed to the 6100 and use it that way.

Good question, my simple answer is I don't know. I have no wireless
experience.

Here is what I can offer:

I don't think your printer will work connected to the printer port with the
other networked Mac's. The printer needs to support Ethernet or you will need a
LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge. I used an AsanteTalk bridge when I had
LaserWriter NTX and a LaserWriter 360 connected. All my current devices support
Ethernet so no bridge is necessary.

SCSI devices -- external hard drives, and removal storage should mount OK
over the network, a scanner is an other matter it depends on the scanner
software. The USB scanner I am using now is not networkable but I have used a
SCSI
scanner that could be used over the network.

File transfer is no real problem unless I want to take a file from a Mac
running OS X to a Mac running OS 7. But I never need to do that.

All my 6100's along with other Mac's which include an SE/30, IIci, a 7100, a
BW G3 and a Sawtooth G4 are hard wired to a 16 port Ethernet switch along
with B/W laser printer, a digital color copier/printer, a digital B/W copier
and
a larger format inkjet color printer. The OS's range from 7.5.5 to OS 10.3.9.

Everything works for me. YMMV.

Perhaps someone with some real world network experience would be a better
source to sort out your situation. I'm no (as obvious) network guru.

Best, good to hear from you again, --glen

 I have a PowerMac 6100/66 with a G3-266 daughtercard. I have recently had
to reformat and reinstall Mac OS 9.1. Since the reinstall, I have been unable
to use AppleTalk for networking or printing purposes. Any ideas as to what has
caused this? I am assuming that there was a patch or something that was
released to deal with this issue, since the version of 9.1 that was installed
before the reformat worked just fine with AppleTalk.

As I recall the default AppleTalk Control Panel setting is Printer Port. A
reinstall will set AppleTalk to this setting.

If you are using ethernet for your network you will need to open the
AppleTalk Control Panel and set the Connect via button to Ethernet --glen

Re: [1st] Replacement? for CD-ROM-(PM 6100/60

In a message james grant tyner [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I have a 6100/60 with a non-functioning AppleCD 300Plus . Hoping that
someone on the list can advise whether this can be replaced with a Sony CD-R/RW
unit (M# CRX17OE)that was OE in my G4 before I installed DVD-R/RW in same. Any
help would be appreciated-I just do not want to mess around blindly.

I quick google search of CRX170E gives a link to a g-list post that
identifies the Sony as an ATA device. If this true it won't work in a 6100 you
will
need a SCSI device for a replacement.

To verify this, count the number of pins on the connector where the Sony
CD-R/RW connects to the 6100 ribbon cable. This will tell you what type of
device
you have.

Re: [1st] Modem connection problem with 7100/80

2005-04-26 Thread GLENSTREK
If I upgrade the OS as suggested to 7.5.3, will this blow away the (many)
installed applications?

No, but I always back up before a major OS install -- just in case something
goes awry.

If you like, I can send to you a CD-ROM 7.5.3 with the 7.5.5 update. I
believe this is legal. If not legal, please someone say so and I will not do
it.

Downloading 15 or so floppy images for 7.5.3 + the 7.5.5 update and
installing from floppies is no fun. It goes so much easier from a CD. Contact
me off
list. --glen

[1st] Re: G3 upgrades for 7100

2004-10-19 Thread GLENSTREK
In a message dated 10/19/04 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Looking for information on system performance while using a 7100 with an G3
upgrade card. How well does an upgraded 7100 run OS X, and OS 9. Are there
any software issues with using these cards?

First, OS X is out. You need at least a PCI Mac even to be unsupported. A G3
B W is the minimum supported CPU for the latest version of OS X.

With that said, generally you will see a big performance improvement with a
G3 upgrade; depending on what applications you use. I'm using a newertechnology
300 MHz G3 card in a 6100 with 1 MB backside cache writing this message. It
makes the old nubus machines workable for web surfing and consumer graphic
editing requirements.

My 7100 with a 240 MHz upgrade runs a FileMaker database. Sorting has and
printing has definitely become snappier but the overall performance is not that
much greater than the original 80 MHz 601 processor which was adequate before
the upgrade.

You can find G3 upgrade cards on the ELM swap list for $20-30. That's where I
got the one in my 7100. It was definitely worth the price.

And as has been stated in other posts you are limited to 128 MB RAM and if
you need to run newer apps, OS X, USB or Firewire get a newer machine; at least
a G3 BW or a G4 Sawtooh if you can afford one --glen (digest mode)
