Actually the Javascript turned out to be a red herring. I need html5
summort; epiphany 2.30.6 will work and is included in the later images
that don't boot. :(

I think it's microcom that's in busybox. It would be great if this was
included in the base build.

I'll grab your conf files and play with them once I get through my
current push.

Thanks!

You may have to create the appropriate recipes for minicom, picocom,

I have ~6 working images approx 3 to 6 months old which I have had a

 Hi Eric:

 My needs are (fairly) simple

I am trying to get an image with a browser that runs javascript,
supports sound output, and has minicom, picocom, or some similar serial
 communications app.

the 2007.12 image which boots fine does not have a browser nor minicom.

The later images that hang on the pxa... line do - but they don't boot.

I also found zubuntu, which is based on hardy heron, and boots fine,
runs firefox, but does not have minicom available and the repositories
 no longer exist. :(

I don't mind building my own images; I do a lot of work with OpenWRT so
I am used to building embedded stuff, as long as it is somewhat user
 friendly :)

So yes, I'd be willing to build it if I can get a recipe.

 The

 pxa2xx-udc pxa2xx-udc: UDC connecting

message is apparently due to a race condition in the boot scripts
somewhere. I have not tried to track that down.

Angstrom users:

the wifi signal falls out of range or becomes unavailable?

Of course you can do this your self, manually, with
ifdown wlan0
ifup wlan1

But that doesn't work so well in embedded systems where a user doesn't have
the ability to type something in to a keyboard.

Here's a tool I wrote for OpenWRT that does exactly that:
http://seiner.com/cz/aap

It's built around OpenWRT's UCI config tool, but you might be able to
use it anyway.

The script scans for APs, then tries any it has auth tokens for and any
open ones. The keepalives are external scripts that return 0 if there's
a valid connection, and 0 if not.

You have to patch recent wireless-tools with the patch in OpenWRT as
wireless tools are broken and don't properly show encryption out of the box.

[Angstrom-distro-users] mplayer and zaurus text screen blanking

2008-06-09 Thread Yan Seiner
(This is more in the way of archiving than anything else. Maybe it will
save someone a few days of frustration.)

For the last few days I've been fighting a battle to get mplayer playing
nicely on my zaurus.

So I installed mplayer from the ipk, and got a little script going to
transcode my movies for the zaurus.

I ran into some trouble getting mplayer to play within the X11
environment, so I change to vt 1 and play directly on the framebuffer.
This worked fine, except after 10 minutes the screen would go blank.

So I spent lots of time screwing around with ipaq-sleep and apm to no
avail. Disabled both (renamed the binaries and rebooted) and still,
screen would go blank after 10 minutes. Hitting any key would restore
the screen - for another 10 minutes.

After having eliminated everything else, I finally figured out that the
terminal itself is going blank after 10 minutes. A simple echo -e
'\033[9;0]' before I start mplayer cures the problem. GAH!!!

Stanislav Brabec wrote:

Mount should happen automatically. As default mount options contain
sync, you can eject you card whenever no writing is in progress (at
least for vfat and other filesystems without dirty flag).

But I agree, that feedback is needed. I am not aware of any suitable
tool for GPE.

I am inclined to reopen bug
http://bugs.openembedded.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3070

It seems to be a real problem, as many combinations of card program
still write ~60kB/sec with sync mount and ~1500kB/sec with async mount.

It was researched in past:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=105871

The result is the flush mount option, which behaves like async, but
flushes all pending buffers during close(), retaining both the maximal
write speed on flash devices and consistent system state after calling
close() (or from GUI perspective: When save finishes.)

However busybox mount seems to be not yet aware of flush mount option,
so some code changes would be required.

OK, I uploaded a quick and dirty 'replacement' for
matchbox-applet-cards. It will mount/unmount flash memory cards and
take wifi down. It will turn socket power on and off.

See http://bugs.openembedded.net/show_bug.cgi?id=4363

You need xdialog to make it work. Get it here:
http://www.seiner.com/spitz/armv5te/xdialog_2.3.1-r0_armv5te.ipk
and then get cardmon:
http://www.seiner.com/spitz/cardmon.tar.gz and untar it into the root
dir. It will create two new applets: /usr/local/bin/cfeject and
/usr/local/bin/sdeject, along with appropriate pixmaps and files.

This will most likely only work with a spitz as it hardcodes sd and cf
card locations and mount points.

I may also add that with 2.6.23 I also had Ximageon and ipaq-sleep

Does it make any sense to go back to 2.6.23 to help sorting out this

Anyone have Angstrom working on a platform that meets those needs?

I developed a custom panel for my last employer that used a 5 QVGA B/W

It used the TS7300 and the standard debian ARM distro, not angstrom, though.

Not sure what your application is and how many you're looking to purchase,
and what you mean by 'very low cost' The TS7300, a daughterboard to
drive the LCD, and the LCD itself cost about $400 in qty of 100. I can

Xmms needs a few extra plugins, which are available in the feeds. First,
for alsa output: xmms-plugin-output-alsa and for mp3 playback: xmms-mad
and for ogg playback: xmms-tremor (although I haven't tried ogg playback
personally). Zaurus used to have a tendency to have everything muted on
install, but I am not sure if that is still true for the more recent
versions.. Either way if the sound was muted, xmms would at least look
like it was playing the file (the seek bar would move etc.). My guess is
you are missing the plugins. Good luck :)

Thanks, I knew I was missing plugins; I didn't know which.

The default kernel has PXA_QVGA built in - but no modules for VGA. I'm
not sure what resolution you are trying to play. Also, what bitrate is the
 stream?

I believe the QVGA/VGA flags in the kernel do nothing at all. It's probably
 worth someone checking.

Well, I got my movie transcoded, and it plays - sort of.

-vo pxa results in a slow fade to white. The movie still plays, but
it's obviously unwatchable. The machine is running, as I can ssh in.

Even after I kill mplayer, the screen stays white. It seems to be an
mplayer bug, since if I start mplayer from an ssh shell, and then exit
'q', the screen goes back to normal.

The movie will play with -vo fbdev, but it doesn't scale to full screen,
but rather stays at the bottom left corner in its 320x160 resolution.
-vo x11 plays as well, with the movie centered. -vo xv plays sound with
no video.

I came across the fade-to-white problem on the web, but I can't for the
life of me find it again this morning

[Angstrom-distro-users] wifi radar doesn't get dhcp address

I'm using wifi radar to manage my networks.

The problem is that it seems to ignore DHCPOFFER from the DHCP server; I
tell it to connect, my DHCP server gets the request, and immediately
responds:

Mar 10 21:21:10 selene dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:90:cc:e0:d3:31
(spitz) via bond0
Mar 10 21:21:11 selene dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.128.198 to
00:90:cc:e0:d3:31 (spitz) via bond0

but wifi radar ignores it.

If I set up the interface for dhcp in /etc/network/interfaces, it picks
it up immediately, so the problem seems to be with wifi-radar.

Is there either a fix or a similar package that would manage wifi networks?

there's been a lot of discussion on oesf forums about it at various times.

basically, scale and rotate the video so that the zaurus has to do the
least amount of work possible, so keep the H rez 640 or the Vertical
 res = 480 so there's no scaling at all (i.e 640x480 for normal 4:3
movie, or 640x400 for 16:9), or 320x240 as quarter rez.

sound should be 48KHz sampling rate, or 24, stereo or mono. compressed
bitrate can be as little as 96kbps for mono to give adequate fair
quality for speech, 128kbps for joint stereo. IME the zaurus seems to
struggle when it has to resample the sound stream for a different
 sampling rate.

feel free to have a play with a script I hacked up here which will
encode files or rip a DVD:
 http://www.zaurus.org.uk/download/scripts/avi-recode-2pass.sh

Hi Paul:

I used your script to create a sample movie. It won't play on my zaurus
at all... :-(

mplayer dies with vo_pxa: could not open /dev/fb2: 13

I've checked and /proc/fb has rw perms...

This thread seems inconclusive

Do I need to rebuild my kernel to include the various pxa_fb* modules?

if you do route -n, you should be able to see where it is going.

I just did ifconfig usb0 down as suggested here:

Alas, that's not it.

The AP shows the card as associated, but ARP fails. On the AP:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# wl assoclist
assoclist 00:90:CC:E0:D3:31 - that's my card
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# arp

192.168.128.19 0x1 0x2 00:90:4B:C9:AC:F6 *br0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#

The IP of the card is 192.168.128.9

In other words, the card is completely dead beyond associating itself
with the AP.

Subject: [Angstrom-distro-users] Card associates, but fails to send any data

I am trying to get a Marvell 8385 cf card running on a Sharp Zaurus.

I have the card set up, I've built the firmware, and the card connects
and associates with the AP just fine.

 But Absolutely no data flows.

No pings, no dhcp broadcasts, nothing. Both lights are lit up, and both
blink like crazy when the card is associating, but once it's connected
 no blinkenlights.

I'm stuck at this point. I've looked at tcpdump on the AP, and there is
nothing coming in from this card. I've assigned IP and route manually,
 again, no joy.

 I'm running 2.6.24-rp from Angstrom.

I would appreciate any suggestions on this.

 Hello,

I'm new to Angstrom/OpenEmbedded/BitBake way of doing things and I need
 help in customizing my kernel.

 I've managed to build Angstrom's base-image and console-image for h3900
machine using org.openembedded.angstrom-2007.12-stable. Now I'd want
 to build an image that:

 1. Contains kernel built with CONFIG_LIBERTAS and CONFIG_LIBERTAS_SDIO
turned on, and, if they are built as modules, corresponding modules
as well.

 2. Has required wireless tools (no GUI stuff is needed).

 How do I do it?

HI Sergei:

I'm trying to do the same thing, except that I am working with a 2.6.24
kernel. I've spliced that kernel into stable, and built it in its
default config, and now I need to configure it to build the libertas_cs
driver. I have the same questions as you. If you find out how to do it
'the bitbake way' please share.

I am trying to build libertas form my marvell 8385 802.11b/g cf card.

Thanks,

[Angstrom-distro-users] Marvell 8385 drivers for spitz

2008-02-27 Thread Yan Seiner
I've been trying to get a Marvell 8385 wifi card running for a while on
my Spitz.

If I understand things correctly, there is mainline support in the
2.6.24 kernel. I just upgraded to the latest angstrom, but it comes
with 2.6.23 kernel, and the 2.6.24 kernel is not available yet for spitz.

Any chance of it appearing soon? Last time I waged a battle with
bitbake I came out victorious but bloody

Is there a kernel upgrade howto anywhere for angstrom on spitz (Sharp
Zaurus SLC-3100)? I haven't been able to find one

All zaurii kernel (except collie and tosa) will be upgraded to 2.6.24
soon in the dev branch. AFAIK, all the patches for spitz has been ported
over to 2.6.24 in .dev. By then, if the autobuilder was initiated in the
dev branch, you can get the new kernel from the unstable/autobuilder
directory. So either be patient or battle with oe/bitbake again...

When the 2.6.24 kernel will get into stable branch is not clear yet.

Hi Gordon:

I have stable building, but I get about 200+ errors like this:
ERROR: Could not inherit file classes/rootfs_${IMAGE_PKGTYPE}.bbclass
while parsing
/data/home/yan/openembedded/org.openembedded.dev/packages/images/ossie-image.bb
when I try to build dev.

Can you make any suggestions? Can I just copy the 2.6.24 stuff from dev
to stable, and change the distro/machine spec files?

You need at least bitbake 1.8.10 or even 1.8.11 for dev. bbclasses are
being revamped by rp in dev.

selene:/etc/udev# bitbake --version
BitBake Build Tool Core version 1.8.10, bitbake version 1.8.10

Must be bitbake 1.8.11

You can copy from dev packages/linux/linux-rp_2.6.24.bb
packages/linux/linux-rp-2.6.24, and any required .inc files to stable.

 remove the line: DEFAULT_PREFERENCE = -1 from linux-rp_2.6.24.bb

 bitbake linux-rp-2.6.24

I can't guarantee it will work but give it a try. If it doesn't work,
please don't complain in angstrom-dev and don't tell Koen I told you
 these ;-)

Oh heck no, I wouldn't complain :-) It's all part of the deal.

[Angstrom-distro-users] marvell 8385 802.11g wifi cards

Can anyone give me any suggestions on getting this card working?

I've been through this project, but I guess I don't quite understand how

the whole kernel, not just the driver. I don't really mind building the
kernel, but I don't want to hose my existing installation.

Any suggestions or guidance on how to play with this?
