By 'active' I merely meant people who weren't just lurking, but occasionally
posting their opinion on the matter. Perhaps even reading along.

The Uplift War - The Humble Beginning (Was Re^17)

2003-07-08 Thread Martin Malmkvist

I have read it before. How about the rest of you guys? Have you read it?
Of course this question is only relevant if you consider participating in
the discussion.
I don't really care which method we chose.
If as much as a single person who hasn't read the book wants to participate,
I recommend just assuming no one did.

O.K.. By the way, I've got a question about protocol. Are
we assuming that everyone has already read the entire book, and that
we're doing a chapter-by-chapter discussion? Last time I did one of
these, some people were reading the book for the first time as we
discussed it. This made it hard to refer to passages from later
parts of the book during the discussion.

I for one have read this book. (I bought it six years ago when I was on a
school trip to London, England, as Brin books were rather hard to find
locally at the time. I'll probably never see the edition I purchased ever
again. Makes a nice souvenier.)

The first post will be at least a couple of days, since I just have to
study the links you provided and read the first couple of chapters.

Just take it one chapter at a time. Heck, feel free to only summarise the
Prelude for now; that one is only a few pages, it'll be a good exercise to
help you prepare for the real work of summarising the various chapters.

I think this is going to be very interesting, but I'm a little curious:
How many people feel like actively joining in? It would be a major bugger

I certainly plan to participate. I'd also expect that at least everyone
who
voted for _The Uplift War_ would participate. There's little point in
voting for a specific book to analyse when you don't want to take part in
 the discussion.

The voting booth will be open till the end of the weekend. On Monday I'll
again tally the votes and announce the winner. If it's a tie again, I'll
 make the final decision myself.

This is a reminder that you can still cast your vote for either _The

Meanwhile, you may want to start thinking about who will do the initial
reading and summarising of each chapter. IMHO, that should be someone who
voted for that particular book in the first round. You know, something
like you do the crime, you do the time. :-)

 Any volunteers yet?

Sure.
I meant to wish everybody a happy 4th of July (I also hope my 4th of July

Besides, I didn't realise that this was a special day for the Canadians as
well.

Re:Re:Re:It's not just Bowie, or is it?

2003-06-30 Thread Martin Malmkvist

I don't know if I got Ibrahim's message right, but I think that there is no
real idea in continuing this discussion.
The original purpose was to highlight some probable causes why there is so
much anti-americanism out there, and I think those reasons have been
thoroughly clarified (and the Americans on the list have also had the
opportunity to defend the ways of their country). So I'm officially off this
discussion - meant in no offensive way, it's been good learning.

The Brin-part:
As stated earlier, I only read the three first books. Still, I find it
interesting that Humanity discovers that it is only one insignificant little
race in a society of vastly more powerful (and in many cases hostile) races.
A few hundred years ago we also gradually started to learn that the Earth
wasn't the center of the Universe.
In fact Earth is a small planet in a solar system centered on a medium-sized
sun located in the outer rim of our galaxy.
So what should be so special about Humanity?
It also presents Earth with some interesting challenges.
And fortunately it had the blind luck to meet the Tymbrimi (wasn't it them?)
and not, for example, the Tandu.

2003-06-26 Thread Martin Malmkvist

I agree. Also on your last point.

Martin Malmkvist

---

You're welcome, and thank you for saving me all that typing. I'll just
add a few notes. Firstly, as far as I can see the collapse of the Third
Reich was caused by lack of resources, most especially the shortage of
oil. It's almost pitiful to read how the main strategy of the Wehrmacht
during the Battle of the Bulge was to capture Allied fuel dumps to
allow continued fighting; or to compare the very small number of
Luftwaffe aircraft still operational during the D Day landings with
those deployed during the Battle of Britain. Secondly, that this known
shortage of oil was behind the gigantic pincer movement stragegy that
attempted to secure oil through the Caucasus or Egypt, and that this
meant that the most important Allied victories were at Stalingrad and
el-Alamein, which stopped this lunge for oil. (Similarly, the most
important bombing campaign may have been the bombing of facilities in
the Romanian oilfields by the Soviets.) Thirdly, the main US
contribution to the war effort in terms of the final victory was
provided by the vast flood of lend-lease goods into Britain and the
Soviet Union (it's often said that the Red Army marched to Berlin in
American boots), and in the Battle of the Atlantic that helped keep the
supply routes to Britain and Murmansk open.

Having said all that, I think it's pretty wonderful that Western Europe
was finally liberated by the American, Canadian and British forces and
not by the Red Army.

SV: Waiting for Harry Potter?

2003-06-13 Thread Martin Malmkvist

Funny you should bring it up.
I never read one of those books. My
girlfriend (who otherwise don't read much) read them all, and has urged me to
read them too, soon.
I just haven't gotten around to it (and yes
- there is also the kiddy-litterature issue which I'm trying to
ignore).
It's really silly because I love to read
fantasy and sci-fi, so I'm sitting with the feeling, that I'm missing something,
yet I can't get myself to start reading those books.
Right now I'm reading a book about Islam,
written by a prominent Danish immigrant to help understanding both sides of the
story (Western vs. Islamic). Not much fun - but educative none the
less.

Well not quite on topic, but what my next read will be.

Two years I had not read a HP book. When I saw people my age
reading them I could not believe that they were reading books for kids.
Finally someone who has good recommendations almost forced me to read the
first one. What fun! Now I'm waiting anxiously for the arrival of
  the newest book.

My problem right now is that I finished my current book and do not want
to start another as I will probably not be finished by the time the new HP
arrives. (Time to catch up on magazines.)

So how many others are waiting? Anyone else going to buy it the
first weekend it is available? How many think it is still a kids book
and will not read it? Anyone just not care?

Erik just told me that we have a listowner here who is
intolerant, fascist, and a spammer. Ironic,
considering that Jeroen called the listowner of the
real Brin-L list intolerant, when it is really Jeroen
who is at fault here. He blames his problems on other
people. Jeroen was responsible for spamming the list,
and he takes out his frustrations by intolerantly and
fascistly unsubscribing Erik.

This is the type of listowner this poor copy of the
real Brin-L has. Don't you think you should
unsubscribe from this fascist list and join the real
Brin-L? The one that was smart enough to BAN Jeroen
for death threats and repeated spamming. Do you really
want to be on a list where the list owner makes death
threats and spams people and blames others for his
crimes? Someone who can't tolerate others to express
their opinions?
