[Chat] trees in the 2700 block of Calvert

2010-12-19 Thread Christine Gray
Was anyone else bothered by the butchering of trees on their block in CV.

Yesterday, three city employees were hacking at the tree in the well in
front of my house. These people obviously knew/know nothing about tree
pruning.

After finishing with that one-and removing major limbs-they went to the next
and took off every branch except those at the very top. The tree looks
comical now, like something out of Dr. Seuss with a top knot.

They kept on up the block and across the street.

Peter, are these people given any instruction on how to prune a tree? And I
don't think December is the time of year to prune.

Thank you,

Christine Gray

Re: [Chat] contractor for a rubber roof?

2010-12-06 Thread Christine Gray
I have to agree.

I have a leak in the third floor front, which no one has been able to find.
In fact, I offered a repairman $100 if he would just find the thing. He
didn't find it.

James guaranteed he would find and fix it and that my roof/ceiling would no
longer leak.

I forget how much I paid him for that and other roof work; $700, I think.

It still leaked and leaks.

After all I had heard of his work, I was disappointed. He did come back and
told me he couldn't find the leak.

I have not had him back since.

I found James McDonald's work to be awful! Everything he did on the back of
my house had to be torn up. Abot 15 gallons of warter got trapped under his
job, got rancid and had had to be redone. With the help of a lawyer, I got
half of my money back.

Ultimately I had Kelbie Roofing do the whole roof. They do an excellent
job. They have done others on my block with excellent results.

James McDonald Roofing MHIC #80778 at 443-538-2104 is a Flat roof specialist
who does torchdown rubber roofs and stands behind his work by coming back as
needed for touchups. He is very reliable and does good work. He knows all
about Charles Village roofs and has been doing them for years. He
advertises in the Charles Villager.

The following is the Sun article about the arrests in the recent robberies
and carjackings in Charles Village and Remington. There are still a lot of
details that we do not know, and not all of the recent armed robberies have
been confessed to. I do not know anything about whether the recent robbery
is Waverly has been solved. Continue to be very careful.

If the juveniles who committed the robberies and carjackings are charged as
adults, as I hope and expect that they will be since guns were used at least
in the robberies (I know little about the carjackings), I will of course
follow the court proceedings and will probably attend the trials. Juvenile
proceedings are closed to the public, and information about them is
generally not revealed to the public. I will report on whatever information
comes my way.

Steve.

Juveniles arrested in Remington, Charles Village carjackings

Police had stepped up observation in area

By Justin Fenton, The Baltimore Sun

10:22 AM EST, November 20, 2010

Police have arrested two juveniles in a series of robberies and carjackings
in the Remington and Charles Village areas.

After receiving reports of a rash of incidents in recent weeks and
recovering a stolen car on Exeter Hall Avenue, the Regional Auto Theft Task
Force began paying closer attention to the area, said Anthony Guglielmi, the
department's chief spokesman.

Task force members located two more stolen vehicles and arrested two
juveniles, one of whom confessed to several of the crimes, Guglielmi said.
He did not release their names.

Judith A. Kunst, president of the Greater Remington Improvement Association,
praised police for giving updates at a recent community meeting.

There was a lot of concern in the neighborhood - these were occurring at
6:30, 7 o'clock at night, she said.

Guglielmi said the investigation was continuing.

 Action Alert http://www.cphabaltimore.org/pdf/action_alert.jpg

Come to City Hall Monday, November 1st!

Support President Young's efforts to televise Liquor Board, BMZA and Board
of Estimates Hearings so residents can see how decisions impacting their
communities are being made.

Please attend the hearing on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 5pm

in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

Attend to support televising these important hearings.

Consider testifying as to why you think televising the Liquor Board, Board
of Estimates and BMZA hearings would make government more transparent.

Background:

You and many of your neighbors know that these boards make determinations
about what is best suited for your community every week.

The public deserves to know how, why and who is making these decisions!
While all of these proceedings are in fact open to the public, they occur
during the day when most residents are working, and therefore unable to
attend.

Alternative Participation:

If you cannot attend but still want to support the effort, send an email to
both

michelle.wirzber...@baltimorecity.gov
mailto:james.kr...@baltimorecity.gov james.kr...@baltimorecity.gov.

Describe your experience during Liquor Board, Board of Estimates and BMZA
hearings and state how you think televising the proceedings would make the
process fairer.

List readers may find the following announcement of interest. It

describes a series of public programs on the theme of Race and Place in

Baltimore,

sponsored by Baltimore Heritage, Inc. and taking place during October.

Baltimore Heritage Tour Goers –

In addition to our regular tours this fall, in October we are pleased to

host a special series called “Race and Place in Baltimore Neighborhoods.”

The series includes three Saturday morning walking tours in Upton, Greater

Rosemont, and Sharp-Leadenhall and a lecture by distinguished scholar and

Baltimore native Dr. Rhonda Williams. We would love to have you join us

for

one or all of these! And, thanks to the Maryland Humanities Council and

Free Fall Baltimore, they are all free.

Together with scholars from the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, UMBC, and Towson

University, as well as neighborhood leaders from the Upton Planning

Committee, the Evergreen Protective Association, and the Sharp-Leadenhall

Planning Committee, we will walk through neighborhoods that have served

witness to

Baltimore's challenging histories of segregation, civil rights, racial

transition, displacement, urban renewal, and even historic preservation.

You’

re encouraged to stay for a light lunch after each tour to continue the

discussion with our tour leaders as we delve into the complicated

relationships

between race and place and what this history means for the future of these

and many other Baltimore neighborhoods.

_Click here to register for one or more of the tours and the lecture_

Race and Place in Baltimore Neighborhoods: Walking Tours

Upton Neighborhood Tour

Date: Saturday, October 9, 2010

Time: 10:00 AM to noon, with light lunch to follow

Place: Meet at Sharp Street Memorial United Methodist Church, 1206 Etting

Street

Free on street parking.

Dr. David Terry, the director of the Reginald Lewis Museum, will lead this

walking tour through the Upton neighborhood of West Baltimore. Once home

to many African American lawyers, politicians, and activists, including

Thurgood Marshall and NAACP Baltimore President Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson,

Upton was also home to thriving African American shopping district and

numerous night clubs and dance hall through the first half of the twentieth

century. This two hour walking tour, featuring neighborhood churches,

schools,

and homes, will focus on local experiences of community development and

civil

rights.

Greater Rosemont Neighborhood Tour

Date: Saturday, October 23, 2010

Time: 10:00 AM to noon, with light lunch to follow

Place: Meet at the West Baltimore Farmer's Market, 400 North Smallwood

(Southwest corner of the North Smallwood and West Franklin Street at the

West

Baltimore MARC Station)

Free off-street parking in the West Baltimore MARC Station parking lot.

Dr. Edward Orser, a professor of American Studies at UMBC, will lead this

walking tour through the Greater Rosemont area of West Baltimore. In the

early 1950s, the neighborhoods of Greater Rosemont flipped from nearly

exclusively white to almost completely African American through a period of

rapid

white flight. The new residents established a stable middle-class

community that successfully resisted demolition by the Highway to

Nowhere.

This two hour walking tour will take visitors from the very beginnings of

the

neighborhood as a streetcar suburb up through the present day and the

prospect of the new Red Line light rail route.

Sharp-Leadenhall Neighborhood Tour

Date: Saturday, October 30, 2010

Time: 10:00 AM to noon, with light lunch to follow

Place: Meet at Leadenhall Baptist Church, 1021 Leadenhall Street

Free on street parking is available. Leadenhall Baptist is also a short

walk from the Charm City Circulator Purple Route Cross Street Market stop.

Betty Bland-Thomas, a long-time community activist and member of the Sharp

Leadenhall Planning Committee, will lead this walking tour through the

Sharp Leadenhall neighborhood in South Baltimore. This community is home to

Ebenezer AME, the third oldest African Methodist Episcopal church in the

nation, and has been home to a vital African American community since the

late

1700s. As in West Baltimore, residents struggled against displacement and

demolition by highways

Hello fellow CV's,
I have a serious leak in the downspout which goes down through my front
porch. It has undermined the column and the roof section that is beneath
it. I have already invested thousands of dollars into repairs on this and
it has always leaked. Does anyone know someone they can recommend who can
rebuild my roof, correct the problems that I have with my downspout once and
for all? Please help!
Thank you for your suggestions,
D'
PS. Please do not recommend the Roof Doctor, James Willis, he has already
had a crack at it and its still leaking!

[Chat] dentist

2010-08-19 Thread Christine Gray
The very best dental care I've ever had has been at the University of
Maryland School of Dentistry. ranked as the best dental school in the US

Ask for a student who will graduate in the spring.

The students cannot make a move until/unless a dental professor/specialist
looks at the patient's teeth. Often, the professor does the work while the
student watches.

The equipment and facilities are top of the line.

It takes insurance.

I had a crown replaced for, I think, $400.

And you can walk there-about 3 miles from CV.

TRANSPORTATION UPDATES:

Getting 'Round Downtown is About to Get a Lot Easier

Beginning this month, Downtown commuters, residents, and visitors will have
two new ways to get where they need to go.

Charm City Circulator - Purple Route

On Monday, June 7th, the Charm City Circulator's Purple Line will begin
running north/south along the Charles Street corridor between Federal Hill
and Penn Station. Downtown Partnership President, Kirby Fowler, will join
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, City Transportation Director Al Foxx, and
other City officials for a 10 a.m. press conference at Cross Street Market
for the launch of the new route.

As with the east/west Orange Line, which is already exceeding ridership
projections, the Purple Line is a free, convenient, and
environmentally-friendly way to move throughout Downtown and Midtown
neighborhoods. It will connect riders with transit stops; link residential,
business, and cultural destinations; and give visitors a new way to get from
the Inner Harbor into Mount Vernon.

We hope you'll take advantage of this fantastic new transit option as soon
as it begins operating on Monday afternoon.

Become a Zipster - ZipCar is Coming to Downtown

ZipCar, the popular car sharing company, is bringing a fleet of vehicles to
Downtown later this month. The service is in cities around the country,
including Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, and it already has a small
presence in Baltimore near the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus in Charles
Village.

It will appeal to visitors and residents who need to take trips that transit
can't accommodate, and it's particularly useful for companies as a
replacement for fleet vehicles. It's just like having a car but without all
the overhead expenses and maintenance.

ZipCar works on a membership basis. Individuals or companies can join and
will have access to different types of cars that will be parked throughout
Downtown. Where they're parked depends on you. ZipCar parks its vehicles
where there is enough demand, so Downtown Partnership is asking its members
to express their interest in ZipCar. Go to our Facebook page, or email us at
i...@dpob.org, and let us know if you or your business would be interested
in becoming a ZipCar member.

Subject: Important message about neighborhood safety

This is from Nancy Miller, down in South Remington:

Hello friends and neighbors. On Tuesday, April 20th, morning around 2am a
man attacked my friend and roommate in our neighborhood.

She was walking alone, which a lot of us do, down Howard St. and made a
right onto W. 24th. (Right where the new storage facility is being built.)
He was right around the corner as soon as she turned. First, he tried to get
her phone number and flirt with her, she said no and kept on walking past
him. Next, she heard him coming from behind her and before she could turn
around he shoved her from behind onto the ground. She quickly tried to get
back up and answer her phone which was ringing. Once she did he shoved her
down again. She then managed to get up, answer the phone and start running.
He chased her down to Hampden Ave. She believes he ran off when he saw her
friends truck headlights and heard her say I'm right here. Her friend was
coming down Sisson St. He then jumped over the fence of the industrial area
across from the 400 block of W. 24th St.

She didn't get a really good look at him but she does know he was an older,
maybe 50's, black guy that had a limp. She remembers he had something white
on his face or some really bad acne and looked homeless. She doesn't
remember his skin tone very well but she said he wasn't especially dark
skinned.

Please pass this on to warn our fellow neighbors, especially the ladies. If
anyone has any information about this or saw anything please message me.
Until this happened my friends and myself have always felt safe to walk
alone anytime in this area. Now, we will definitely be honoring the buddy
system. Be careful everyone!

[Chat] 3100 block of St. Paul

2010-03-08 Thread Christine Gray
Steve,

Without going to the Dept. of City Records, is there a simple way to see
what businesses were in the 3100 block back in the, say, 1920s?

I think an interesting story could be written about how the block has
changed/evolved-or devolved.

I just checked the Sun online archives (using free abstracts rather than
paying for full articles). Here is the abstract of an article from Aug 8,
1980:

Silber's Bakery, a landmark Baltimore firm for 70 years troubled recently by
health department reports of roach and rodent infestation, made its last
deliveries yesterday and closed its doors for good.

So Silber's closed in August, 1980.

Christine,

I think that the Homewood Deli opened some time in the 70s, and I remember
that it had a Silber's. So I wonder if Silber's might have moved when the
Homewood Deli opened. That would explain both of our recollections about
Silber's.

One thing that I remember is that the Sun used to have a restaurant critic
named John Dorsey who wrote a restaurant review once a week. He wrote a
review of the Homewood Deli in which he said that the Deli was a lot like
Elsie's in Cambridge, Mass. I have very fond memories of eating chopped
chicken liver sandwiches and tongue sandwiches and of having milkshakes
(frappes in the Boston area dialect) at Elsie's, and while the Homewood
Deli was okay, it was no Elsie's. Also, Elsie's was smaller than the
Homewood Deli and was always packed with customers.

Steve.

Gary, when I was married in 1966, my husband and I moved into an apartment

John Spurrier said that he remembers the place as a Harley's, like a Burger
king, sort of.

Before that, in the 60s, though, I think it was a Silber's Bakery.

There was another one on Greenmount, which used to be a wonderful shopping
area-two movie theater, Woolworth's, a great hardware store, Pecorra's
Italian restaurant, and a Silber's.

You can still see part of its art deco front. I think it's a men's clothing
store now.

It's on the right side headed north and in the same block as Mr. Nifty
Cleaners.

Baltimore to start towing cars from snow emergency routes

Baltimore will tow cars parked on snow emergency routes, according to city
officials.

Remember,
http://www.baltimorecity.gov/Government/AgenciesDepartments/Transportation/
TheSnowPage.aspx Phase II of the snow emergency plan is in effect.
Drivers can park their cars for free in some school parking lots and in
city-owned garages in Little Italy, Federal Hill, Fells Point and downtown
Baltimore.
With temperatures in the 20s today though, digging out one's car does not
seem like a pleasant pastime.
You are supposed to be able to call 311 to find out where your car might be
if it is towed, but I'm checking to find out where the cars will be taken
--- and how much it will cost to retrieve it.

Both the police and animal control visited us last evening, the police to
follow up after they talked to the owner, and animal control as their first
visit to the house. The attacking dog is currently still at home in the
block, so please don't walk your dog or have young children taken down that
block. Animal Control photographed the dog, and will request a hearing once
the police report is finalized and available. We'll certainly follow up on
both aspects.

Herschel is home as of late last night, and bandaged up quite badly. The
vet said he is lucky to be alive, and Greg was not seriously injured
himself. However, we will be pursuing this matter legally once all of the
paperwork is ready!

Rod:

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Chat List. I am sorry that
you were attacked by a pit bull two months ago but I am glad to hear that
the Northern District responded timely and in a manner that resulted in a
proper resolution.

In response to your complaint about Animal Control, the CVCA Safety
Committee will take this matter under advisement, and will discuss the
scheduling of a meeting between interested residents, Animal Control,
Northern District Police, and CVCBD Safety Staff, about how dog attack
incidents are handled and whether any improvements are necessary. We will
notify the residents when the meeting date is set.

The residents can help in this process by notifying our CVCA President,
Jennifer Erickson, at cvcapresid...@yahoo.com, or me at the email address
below, if you hear of any other incidents of this type.

Thank you.

My dog and I were attacked by a pit bull in the alley between Maryland Ave
and Howard St. approximately two months ago. I had to nearly beat the life
out of the pit bull in order to get it to let go of my dog. In the process
I seriously cut up my hands and broke my foot. I held the pit bull by the
throat while my wife called animal control. Animal control responded by
saying that they would dispatch an officer immediately, and we could expect
them within 72 HOURS! Needless to say, we then called police, and they
showed up and dealt with the situation. I provided all of my information
and obtained a police report. I was told that animal control would contact
me within 24 hours. I never heard from animal control, and had to verify
the rabies vaccinations of the pit bull on my own. Luckily, the pit bull's
owner was found, and I was able to obtain the vaccination records. My
personal experience has been that Baltimore City Animal Control is
worthless.

My happy ending is that my dog has fully recovered.

Wanted to alert everyone to a
suspicious man whom I observed while walking a client's dog
today.  He appeared to be intoxicated and kept sitting
on steps of several homes and looked into a couple of
windows in the 2600 and 2700 blocks of Guilford (west side
of street).  I called 911 immediately and when no one
came within a few minutes, I called again.  Cops just
showed up, talked to him and let him go (why he was not
cited for public intoxication is beyond me).  He
started walking down toward 25th, hopefully leaving

You can get a 3 liter tin of Colavita extra virgin olive oil at Trinacria
for about $25. That is what I generally use. It costs a lot less than at
Whole Foods.

I was introduced to Trinacria by my son-in-law who comes from Firenze

They also sell pastas, olives and inexpensive wines at Trinacria.

The store looks like a hole in the wall, but it is great.

Trinacria's is best when it's packed. Especially around holidays when
Italians and other ethnic folk make it a special trip from all over the
region.

I was talking to an old guy there... and he asked me if I was from around

Margaret Brent opens its doors at 0830 in the morning and will provide a
free breakfast to any and all children up to the age of 18. They will also
provide a lunch meal for any and all children up to the age of 18 as well.
So if you know of a family that is currently experiencing difficulty
providing food for children, plese let them know that they can go to
Margaret Brent and get two free meals a day during the school week.

If you want to check the schedule at your school you can contact Ms. Lydia

No plastic bags for recycling. The plastic bags jam up the machines that
sort the types of recycling, so putting your cans in plastic bags costs us
money. The workers have to empty the bags to avoid jamming the sorting

Now that we have single-stream recycling, we don't have to put our

put them in plastic bags? I've been dumping them out of the bags and

[Chat] trash

Would someone clarify the trash/recycling pickup.

I finally bought both a yellow trash container and a yellow recycling bin.

I thought trashcans had to have lids/covers, yet the one I bought and the
ones I've seen do not have covers. What does one do?

Also, are the items that are in the yellow recycling bins in plastic bags or
not

Finally, does Poly still have a drop-off place for recycling old televisions
and computer items?

Christine,

Let me answer your questions in the order you asked them:

According to the City web site,
http://www.baltimorecity.gov/government/dpw/recycle/bins.php , a limited
number of lids for the yellow recycling cans are available at 111 Kane St.
(across from Patterson High School) Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
for $3 each. I have not been there yet to get lids, but it seems to me that
if I am going to keep a recycling can behind my house to hold recycling
between pickups as I would like to do, then I ought to have a lid on the
can. Yesterday, I asked David Hill about having CVCBD buy lids to resell at
cost, and he said that he would look into it. Previously, he had told me
that CVCBD would get lids when they became available. I may go to Kane St.
next week to try to get lids for my 2 cans. But the City does not require
lids on the recycling cans, and there are no lids for the bins. Some people
have drilled holes in the bottom of the cans (the bins have holes already)
in order to let water drain out of the cans when it rains.

It is unfortunate that the yellow recycling cans are an odd size for which
lids are not available at hardware stores. But if, as I expect, the City
goes to its planned one plus one trash removal system on July 1 (one pickup
each week of mixed refuse from a 65 gallon trash can to be provided to each
household by the City, and one recycling pickup each week, with a sizable
cost saving for the City), then one can also label the old plastic trash
cans as recycling (the City has bumper stickers available that you can put
on the cans to so label them), and those cans hopefully have lids.

The City most emphatically does not want you to use plastic bags for
recycling. They say that plastic bags should be recycled at the stores that
take them for recycling. Also, I find that I need plastic bags for cat
poop, and you probably need them for your dog's poop.

Electronic stuff (that actually contains a lot of toxic substances) can be
dropped off at the Sisson Street transfer station (on the west side of
Sisson between 28th and 29th Streets, basically at the bottom of the hill
before you get to the JFX) any time that that transfer station is open.
Generally, that means Monday through Saturday, and you can look online on
the City web site for the hours (summer and winter hours are not the same).
Regular trash and recycling can also be dropped off there. About once every
6 months, you can drop other hazardous waste off at Poly.

Steve.

Hello all,

He has been observed eating food out of cans and drinking water from a very
large plastic water bottle.
He is a white man, about 5'6 to 5'9 with graying hair and glasses. He has
been wearing the same clothes since first observed a couple of weeks ago.
He also is behaving peculiarly.

He seems to be there most of the time when I drive by. I was alerted to
his presence by a friend who lives in the 2900 block of Guilford and we have
called the police a number of times to see what the story is. He never
seems to be there when they show up.

If anyone has any information about this individual or if you see him, call

would be a great relief.

Christine,

Nolo Press of San Francisco is a highly respected source
for legal self-help information. Their website is nolo.com .
Their book 101 Legal Forms for Personal Use has
a form for a limited power of attorney for finance.
This book costs $18 for downloadable softcopy.
I couldn't find a general purpose durable power of
attorney form on their website.

I've used Nolo Press books on Special Needs trusts
and social security disability. They were of high
quality and quite usable.

2009/1/30 Christine Gray langwi...@comcast.net:
Maybe someone on the list can give suggestions-

The elderly woman who lives in the basement apartment next door to me has
been hospitalized because of a liver condition.

She will not be able to return to her apartment and will be going into
assisted living. (Right now she's in Future Care, 2700 N. Charles.)

A friend up the block and I are going through her things for her and plan
to
 give away/store etc. various items.

She has furniture and many books, none of which is valuable.

She wants one of us to have durable power of attorney.

 Two questions:

Does anyone know if there is a FREE online form I can download and print
for
the power of attorney? I haven't been able to find one.

Nothing the woman owns is valuable, still, the two of us hate to let the
landlord throw it all in the trash. Does anyone know of a group or person
that we can contact to come over SOON to take what they want?

 Thank you,

 Christine Gray

Today my mother called me because a Police officer went to our house to
drop off an open package that was addressed to her.

He asked if she knew what the contents of the box was and what should be in
the box, and if she was expecting a delivery.

She only told him that hse was expecting a box from her cousin, with candy
and come caribbien spices. He went tot he trunk of his vehicle (According to
her the vehicle was a police car but does not remember if was a city police
car or county or state) She says he was wearing a uniform.

He asked her for her name and birth date. (I find that rather odd)

He gave her the package and then left telling her that he would return at
1pm to get a report.

I may be paraniod but this sets off my Spider senses on many levels. 1)
why would a cop just drop off the package? 2) why did he only ask for her
name and age?

I plan on staying home tomorrow to see if this cop returns.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Theories?

I would appreciate any and all input

Subject: Overturn Prop 8

Dear MoveOn member,

Along with our tremendous excitement over Barack Obama's victory, a lot of
us are sad and angry about a different election result-the passage of
California Proposition 8, which reversed marriage equality and wrote
discrimination into the California Constitution.

Many people worked hard to defeat this measure-including MoveOn members, who
contributed over $300,000 to defeat it. But agents of intolerance used
fear-mongering to eke out a win.

After the election, people across California immediately took to the
streets, vowing to put the state on the right side of history by overturning
Prop 8.

Now folks everywhere are coming together to add their voices. Tomorrow
(Saturday) there will be rallies in support of marriage equality in every
single state. If you want to attend an event in your state, go to this pa ge
and click on your state name-you'll see the location of any rallies planned:

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=51025

id=15119-1193638-XfZ04_xt=1

These rallies will send a strong signal that depriving people of rights is
no longer acceptable in America-and it will also be a first step in ongoing
activism across the nation.

There's one other thing you can do to support the fight for marriage
equality.

The Courage Campaign (which does MoveOn-style organizing in California) is
working with other groups on a two-year grassroots plan to overturn Prop 8
in the 2010 election. The first step is for folks to speak out together with
one voice right away by signing a pledge to help overturn Prop 8.

Over 100,000 people have already signed the pledge-and thousands more are
signing every day. Even non-Californians are signing the pledge in
solidarity. If you'd like to sign, click here:

For the second time in three weeks, we just heard 5-6 gunshots within a
block of our house on Guilford (at 9 p.m. on a gorgeous evening). About
seven cop cars responded, which is good. Meanwhile, the house at 2622
Guilford has become a full-time drug house with a constant stream of cars
coming to the house, double parking and going in for drugs as I smell the
daily smell of marijuana smoke as I walk the dog. Also, a group of four
12-year-olds harassed me as I walked the dog, one of them carrying a metal
baton (I later saw him duck in the bushes, undoubtedly to assault a future
passer-by). I call the cops but nothing happens.

Ahhh, life in the Village. Isn't it grand?!

Hi Christine,

I have recently experienced using a Sherwin Williams product called
Duration. It goes on absolutely fantastic and covers absolutely GREAT! It is
moderately expensive, but it is worth it. It is guaranteed not peel, fade,
etc. It is self priming, but it is recommended to prime any bare wood. The
normal requirements of removing any loose paint still applies. It is noted
that this is new technology and it is actually not a paint. I am VERY happy
with the product.

There is a Sherwin Williams store at Falls Road Cold Spring across from
POLY. It is located behind the shopping area. (I suppose that is the North
East corner. I do not know their hours--(call first).

They can mix any color that you want. Good luck on painting your award
winning Painted Lady.

Best Wishes:

The Baltimore City Police Dept is about to implement one of the most
innovative training initiatives that has been undertaken in the entire
country. The Police Commissioner is taking a big risk in this investment in
training but the outcomes can be potent.

The Northern District will be leading the way and the Community Relations
Officers are asking for our help. Please see below. If you know someone
who would like to help train our (the Northern's!) officers on communication
skills, community relations, dealing with citizens, etc., PLEASE ask them to
volunteer. No guarantees, but they are likely to gain as much from the
experience as the officers!

If you or others you know, have had interactions with police officers
anywhere and you muttered to yourself this guy could sure use some training
in talking to citizens, this is a chance to raise the bar here in
Baltimore.

I called Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke's office about this for a neighbor a
couple of days ago - apparently this has been happening to other folks
across the city and it's because the bureau of water and waste water at the
city is starting to use a different system (trying to upgrade finally) - and
it has a few hic-ups now and then. Call Mary Pat Clarke's office, Cindy
(her staff person) can help. Or call the customer service number on the
bill, and they will probably tell you the same thing and re-work the bill.

Hope this helps.

Christine,

By all means, have the city send someone out to re-check your meter! Just
call the number on your statement for billing inquiries. Last summer, I got
a water bill for $900 when the meter reader inverted two numbers.

Also, you can check for a slow leak in your commodes by putting cold coffee
or a cola in your toilet tanks. If there's a slow leak, the water in the
bowl will turn brown. In all likelihood, the folks in the utilities
department will suggest this, so it's good to be able to tell them you've
already checked this possibility (As if a slow leak would increase your
total water usage by a factor of ten...!).

Hope this helps!

Kathleen

Is it possible to get another reading of the water meter?

To Whom it May Concern,
I am hoping you can distribute some information to your members or
neighbors. I found (with the help of caring JHU students in running shoes) a
lost dog this morning. He was running scared in the south bound lane of N.
Charles street. He's a brown Dachshund with a red harness and no tags. If
you know of anyone who lost his/her dog this morning, Friday, Sept. 28,
around 8:45am, please have them contact me at 410-627-4326. I've also posted
signs on N. Charles Street and in the Wyman Park Dell.

I work in the JHU Art History department and I have the dog here. I will
take him home this evening and can deliver him to the owner if located.

My suggestion is, whatever you do, is to be as diplomatic as

You should mention it to them, but don't come across as accusatory.

always left notes for everyone on the block whenever they have undertaken
major work on their properties. I guess it never occurred to yours to do
that. Assuming good intentions, they probably had no idea how much dust

Judy,

Competition from Chipolte could be a factor, though the owner
of Rocky Run mentioned a problem with declining sales over 4 years.

It doesn't surprise me that Record Tape Traders is closing. File sharing
programs, on-line music sales and cd burners in every computer have
changed the way music is exchanged. A generation ago Record Tape
Traders capitalized on on the growing trend of home taping by allowing
customers to 'rent' records overnight for $1.00. In 2007 consumers
no longer need to visit a retailer to get their music.

Apologies for Cross-Postings.

To subscribers of H-Maryland:

I'm working on getting a panel together for the symposium next April
related to the 1968 riots in Baltimore. The panel will be primarily
about archival documentation, both inside and outside traditional
repositories. I am hoping to present information about existing
documentation of the riots and their aftermath in a forum that will
generate discussion about archival documentation, collection,
preservation, and access using this important, recent event as a case
study.

I am just now beginning to try to get a sense of the documentary
universe related to these events of 1968, and I am writing to ask
your help. At this point, I am aware of the news film and oral
history documentation at the University of Baltimore, but little else.

If you have or know of collections that document some aspect of the
riots and their aftermath could you let me know? As I said, I'm
interested in collections inside and outside of repositories.

I was to stress that I am not, nor do I plan to, solicit anyone's
collections for donation; I only want to know about them and view them
if possible.

Thanks so much in advance,
Megan McShea

[Chat] need opinions

2007-08-21 Thread Christine Gray
I need advice from people.

The owners of the house next door had a mason remove loose mortar between
bricks up two thirds of the wall (from kitchen to the second floor) in the
breezeway between their house and mine. (The breezeway is what I call the
narrow space in the back between two houses.

When I got home I found a fine-and very noticeable-brick/mortar dust on
everything!!! on the second floor.

I had left open three windows facing the breezeway.

At first, I just thought I'd deal with it and clean it up. But in cleaning
it up, I'm seeing that it is in soap, floors, towels, books, banisters,
stairs, furniture, plants, clothing-it's just everywhere!

So I have stopped trying to clean it up.

I want to stay on good terms with my neighbors, of course; I don't know them
really well at all but they are nice people.

What would you do? Go to the neighbor? Find the mason/worker? Shut and
clean?

Thank you,

[Chat] FW: 2 houses

2007-07-25 Thread Christine Gray
Interesting.

Christine Gray

A Tale of Two Houses

House 1:

The four-bedroom home was planned so that 'every room has a relationship
with something in the landscape that's different from the room next door.
Each of the rooms feels like a slightly different place.' The resulting
single-story house is a paragon of environmental planning.

The passive-solar house is built of honey-colored native limestone and
positioned to absorb winter sunlight, warming the interior walkways and
walls of the 4,000-square-foot residence. Geothermal heat pumps circulate
water through pipes buried 300 feet deep in the ground. These waters pass
through a heat exchange system that keeps the home warm in winter and cool
in summer.

A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from
roof urns; wastewater from sinks, toilets, and showers cascades into
underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water
from the cistern is then used to irrigate the landscaping around the
four-bedroom home, (which) uses indigenous grasses, shrubs, and flowers
to complete the exterior treatment of the home.

In addition to its minimal environmental impact, the look and layout of
the house reflect one of the paramount priorities: relaxation. A spacious
10-foot porch wraps completely around the residence and beckons the family
outdoors. With few hallways to speak of, family and guests make their way
from room to room either directly or by way of the porch. 'The house doesn't
hold you in. Where the porch ends there is grass. There is no step-up at
all.'

The house consumes 25% of the energy of an average American home.
(Source: The Chicago Tribune, April 2001 as published in Cowboys and Indians
Magazine.)
---

House 2:

This 20-room, 8-bathroom house consumes more electricity every month
than the average American household uses in an entire year. The average
household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year,
according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, this house devoured nearly
221,000 kWh, more than 20 times the national average. Last August alone, the
house burned through 22,619 kWh, guzzling more than twice the electricity
in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a
result of this energy consumption, the average monthly electric bill topped
$1,359. Also, natural gas bills for this house and guest house averaged
$1,080 per month last year. In total, this house had nearly $30,000 in
combined electricity and natural gas bills for 2006. (Source: just about

Re: [Chat] Fwd: hood thugs

2007-07-17 Thread Christine Gray
I thought there was a message posted here a few weeks ago-I believe it was
from a police person. The message was to contact the police whenever a
large group of youth is wandering through the neighborhood, the implication
being-or perhaps stated-that such groups are usually not up to any good.

Does anyone else remember such a message here?

I agree! I love living here and the greatest part about it, is that we can
walk around. I saw these kids that day walking on both side of the street
on 27th Calvert. I would say about 15 or 20 of them. They were loud enough
for me to stop and look out the window. I guess when this beating happen
there were people at the bus stop and did nothing. Two friends of ours came
out with their dog and tried to scare them away. I feel scared, but I don't
want to stay in the house. Maybe a block party/meeting so we could get to
know each other. I just moved in the area in Nov. I know my neighbors next
door and behind and a few here and there. I would love to be more
connected.

I'm sorry to hear about the recent assaults but also quite sorry that
the police are giving people such advice as not to walk alone! Are
citizens all supposed to stay cowering inside their homes or offices and
to desert our sidewalks and yards, leaving them only to thugs? How does
an empty community make life better for anyone?

Better advice would be for all of us to come outside our houses, sit on
our porches, walk in the neighborhood, be a presence, get to know our
neighbors, and watch out for one another.

Here is the article to which Christine referred. I'm not sure whether the
location is actually within the boundaries of Charles Village (according to
the map on the CVCBD web site, it is not within CVCBD, and I am not sure
about CVCA). Anyway, it is another tragedy in our neighborhood. Steve.
