[Chat] trees in the 2700 block of Calvert
Was anyone else bothered by the butchering of trees on their block in CV. Yesterday, three city employees were hacking at the tree in the well in front of my house. These people obviously knew/know nothing about tree pruning. After finishing with that one-and removing major limbs-they went to the next and took off every branch except those at the very top. The tree looks comical now, like something out of Dr. Seuss with a top knot. They kept on up the block and across the street. Peter, are these people given any instruction on how to prune a tree? And I don't think December is the time of year to prune. Re: [Chat] contractor for a rubber roof?
I have to agree. I have a leak in the third floor front, which no one has been able to find. In fact, I offered a repairman $100 if he would just find the thing. He didn't find it. James guaranteed he would find and fix it and that my roof/ceiling would no longer leak. I forget how much I paid him for that and other roof work; $700, I think. It still leaked and leaks. After all I had heard of his work, I was disappointed. He did come back and told me he couldn't find the leak. I have not had him back since. The new residents established a stable middle-class community that successfully resisted demolition by the Highway to Nowhere. This two hour walking tour will take visitors from the very beginnings of the neighborhood as a streetcar suburb up through the present day and the prospect of the new Red Line light rail route. Sharp-Leadenhall Neighborhood Tour Date: Saturday, October 30, 2010 Time: 10:00 AM to noon, with light lunch to follow Place: Meet at Leadenhall Baptist Church, 1021 Leadenhall Street Free on street parking is available. Leadenhall Baptist is also a short walk from the Charm City Circulator Purple Route Cross Street Market stop. Betty Bland-Thomas, a long-time community activist and member of the Sharp Leadenhall Planning Committee, will lead this walking tour through the Sharp Leadenhall neighborhood in South Baltimore. This community is home to Ebenezer AME, the third oldest African Methodist Episcopal church in the nation, and has been home to a vital African American community since the late 1700s. As in West Baltimore, residents struggled against displacement and demolition by highways

The very best dental care I've ever had has been at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. ranked as the best dental school in the US Ask for a student who will graduate in the spring. The students cannot make a move until/unless a dental professor/specialist looks at the patient's teeth. Often, the professor does the work while the student watches. [Chat] FW: Getting 'Round Downtown is About to Get a Lot Easier
Posted by Christine Gray _ From: Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, Inc. Charm City Circulator - Purple Route On Monday, June 7th, the Charm City Circulator's Purple Line will begin running north/south along the Charles Street corridor between Federal Hill and Penn Station. Downtown Partnership President, Kirby Fowler, will join Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, City Transportation Director Al Foxx, and other City officials for a 10 a.m. press conference at Cross Street Market for the launch of the new route. As with the east/west Orange Line, which is already exceeding ridership projections, the Purple Line is a free, convenient, and environmentally-friendly way to move throughout Downtown and Midtown neighborhoods. It will connect riders with transit stops; link residential, business, and cultural destinations; and give visitors a new way to get from the Inner Harbor into Mount Vernon. We hope you'll take advantage of this fantastic new transit option as soon as it begins operating on Monday afternoon. Become a Zipster - ZipCar is Coming to Downtown ZipCar, the popular car sharing company, is bringing a fleet of vehicles to Downtown later this month. The service is in cities around the country, including Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, and it already has a small presence in Baltimore near the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus in Charles Village. It will appeal to visitors and residents who need to take trips that transit can't accommodate, and it's particularly useful for companies as a replacement for fleet vehicles. It's just like having a car but without all the overhead expenses and maintenance. ZipCar works on a membership basis. Individuals or companies can join and will have access to different types of cars that will be parked throughout Downtown. Where they're parked depends on you. ZipCar parks its vehicles where there is enough demand, so Downtown Partnership is asking its members to express their interest in ZipCar. Go to our Facebook page, or email us at i...@dpob.org, and let us know if you or your business would be interested in becoming a ZipCar member. On Tuesday, April 20th, morning around 2am a man attacked my friend and roommate in our neighborhood. She was walking alone, which a lot of us do, down Howard St. and made a right onto W. 24th. (Right where the new storage facility is being built.) He was right around the corner as soon as she turned. First, he tried to get her phone number and flirt with her, she said no and kept on walking past him. Next, she heard him coming from behind her and before she could turn around he shoved her from behind onto the ground. She quickly tried to get back up and answer her phone which was ringing. Once she did he shoved her down again. She then managed to get up, answer the phone and start running. He chased her down to Hampden Ave. She believes he ran off when he saw her friends truck headlights and heard her say I'm right here. Her friend was coming down Sisson St. He then jumped over the fence of the industrial area across from the 400 block of W. 24th St. She didn't get a really good look at him but she does know he was an older, maybe 50's, black guy that had a limp. She remembers he had something white on his face or some really bad acne and looked homeless. She doesn't remember his skin tone very well but she said he wasn't especially dark skinned. Please pass this on to warn our fellow neighbors, especially the ladies. If anyone has any information about this or saw anything please message me. Until this happened my friends and myself have always felt safe to walk alone anytime in this area. Now, we will definitely be honoring the buddy system. Be careful everyone! I think an interesting story could be written about how the block has changed/evolved-or devolved. Here is the abstract of an article from Aug 8, 1980: Silber's Bakery, a landmark Baltimore firm for 70 years troubled recently by health department reports of roach and rodent infestation, made its last deliveries yesterday and closed its doors for good. So Silber's closed in August, 1980. Steve On 3/7/2010 10:38 PM, Stephen J Gewirtz wrote: Christine, I'm fairly certain that Silber's was already in the Homewood Deli when the mouse problem occurred. So I wonder if Silber's might have moved when the Homewood Deli opened. That would explain both of our recollections about Silber's. One thing that I remember is that the Sun used to have a restaurant critic named John Dorsey who wrote a restaurant review once a week. He wrote a review of the Homewood Deli in which he said that the Deli was a lot like Elsie's in Cambridge, Mass. I have very fond memories of eating chopped chicken liver sandwiches and tongue sandwiches and of having milkshakes (frappes in the Boston area dialect) at Elsie's, and while the Homewood Deli was okay, it was no Elsie's. Also, Elsie's was smaller than the Homewood Deli and was always packed with customers. Steve. There was another one on Greenmount, which used to be a wonderful shopping area-two movie theater, Woolworth's, a great hardware store, Pecorra's Italian restaurant, and a Silber's. You can still see part of its art deco front. I think it's a men's clothing store now. It's on the right side headed north and in the same block as Mr. Nifty Cleaners. I held the pit bull by the throat while my wife called animal control. Animal control responded by saying that they would dispatch an officer immediately, and we could expect them within 72 HOURS! Needless to say, we then called police, and they showed up and dealt with the situation. I provided all of my information and obtained a police report. I was told that animal control would contact me within 24 hours. I never heard from animal control, and had to verify the rabies vaccinations of the pit bull on my own. Luckily, the pit bull's owner was found, and I was able to obtain the vaccination records. My personal experience has been that Baltimore City Animal Control is worthless. I have not been there yet to get lids, but it seems to me that if I am going to keep a recycling can behind my house to hold recycling between pickups as I would like to do, then I ought to have a lid on the can. Yesterday, I asked David Hill about having CVCBD buy lids to resell at cost, and he said that he would look into it. Previously, he had told me that CVCBD would get lids when they became available. I may go to Kane St. next week to try to get lids for my 2 cans. But the City does not require lids on the recycling cans, and there are no lids for the bins. Some people have drilled holes in the bottom of the cans (the bins have holes already) in order to let water drain out of the cans when it rains. It is unfortunate that the yellow recycling cans are an odd size for which lids are not available at hardware stores. But if, as I expect, the City goes to its planned one plus one trash removal system on July 1 (one pickup each week of mixed refuse from a 65 gallon trash can to be provided to each household by the City, and one recycling pickup each week, with a sizable cost saving for the City), then one can also label the old plastic trash cans as recycling (the City has bumper stickers available that you can put on the cans to so label them), and those cans hopefully have lids. The City most emphatically does not want you to use plastic bags for recycling. They say that plastic bags should be recycled at the stores that take them for recycling. Also, I find that I need plastic bags for cat poop, and you probably need them for your dog's poop. Electronic stuff (that actually contains a lot of toxic substances) can be dropped off at the Sisson Street transfer station (on the west side of Sisson between 28th and 29th Streets, basically at the bottom of the hill before you get to the JFX) any time that that transfer station is open. Generally, that means Monday through Saturday, and you can look online on the City web site for the hours (summer and winter hours are not the same). Regular trash and recycling can also be dropped off there. About once every 6 months, you can drop other hazardous waste off at Poly. Steve. He has been observed eating food out of cans and drinking water from a very large plastic water bottle. He is a white man, about 5'6 to 5'9 with graying hair and glasses. He has been wearing the same clothes since first observed a couple of weeks ago. He also is behaving peculiarly. He seems to be there most of the time when I drive by. Many people worked hard to defeat this measure-including MoveOn members, who contributed over $300,000 to defeat it. But agents of intolerance used fear-mongering to eke out a win. After the election, people across California immediately took to the streets, vowing to put the state on the right side of history by overturning Prop 8. Now folks everywhere are coming together to add their voices. Tomorrow (Saturday) there will be rallies in support of marriage equality in every single state. There's one other thing you can do to support the fight for marriage equality. The Courage Campaign (which does MoveOn-style organizing in California) is working with other groups on a two-year grassroots plan to overturn Prop 8 in the 2010 election. The first step is for folks to speak out together with one voice right away by signing a pledge to help overturn Prop 8. To subscribers of H-Maryland: I'm working on getting a panel together for the symposium next April related to the 1968 riots in Baltimore. The panel will be primarily about archival documentation, both inside and outside traditional repositories. I am hoping to present information about existing documentation of the riots and their aftermath in a forum that will generate discussion about archival documentation, collection, preservation, and access using this important, recent event as a case study. I am just now beginning to try to get a sense of the documentary universe related to these events of 1968, and I am writing to ask your help. At this point, I am aware of the news film and oral history documentation at the University of Baltimore, but little else. If you have or know of collections that document some aspect of the riots and their aftermath could you let me know? As I said, I'm interested in collections inside and outside of repositories. I was to stress that I am not, nor do I plan to, solicit anyone's collections for donation; I only want to know about them and view them if possible. [Chat] need opinions
I need advice from people. The owners of the house next door had a mason remove loose mortar between bricks up two thirds of the wall (from kitchen to the second floor) in the breezeway between their house and mine. (The breezeway is what I call the narrow space in the back between two houses. When I got home I found a fine-and very noticeable-brick/mortar dust on everything!!! on the second floor. I had left open three windows facing the breezeway. At first, I just thought I'd deal with it and clean it up. But in cleaning it up, I'm seeing that it is in soap, floors, towels, books, banisters, stairs, furniture, plants, clothing-it's just everywhere! So I have stopped trying to clean it up. I want to stay on good terms with my neighbors, of course; I don't know them really well at all but they are nice people. What would you do? Go to the neighbor? Find the mason/worker? Shut and clean? [Chat] FW: 2 houses
Interesting. Christine Gray A Tale of Two Houses House 1: The four-bedroom home was planned so that 'every room has a relationship with something in the landscape that's different from the room next door. Each of the rooms feels like a slightly different place.' The resulting single-story house is a paragon of environmental planning. The passive-solar house is built of honey-colored native limestone and positioned to absorb winter sunlight, warming the interior walkways and walls of the 4,000-square-foot residence. Geothermal heat pumps circulate water through pipes buried 300 feet deep in the ground. These waters pass through a heat exchange system that keeps the home warm in winter and cool in summer. A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from roof urns; wastewater from sinks, toilets, and showers cascades into underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water from the cistern is then used to irrigate the landscaping around the four-bedroom home, (which) uses indigenous grasses, shrubs, and flowers to complete the exterior treatment of the home. In addition to its minimal environmental impact, the look and layout of the house reflect one of the paramount priorities: relaxation. A spacious 10-foot porch wraps completely around the residence and beckons the family outdoors. With few hallways to speak of, family and guests make their way from room to room either directly or by way of the porch. 'The house doesn't hold you in. Where the porch ends there is grass. There is no step-up at all.' The house consumes 25% of the energy of an average American home. (Source: The Chicago Tribune, April 2001 as published in Cowboys and Indians Magazine.) --- House 2: This 20-room, 8-bathroom house consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year. The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, this house devoured nearly 221,000 kWh, more than 20 times the national average. Last August alone, the house burned through 22,619 kWh, guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of this energy consumption, the average monthly electric bill topped $1,359. Also, natural gas bills for this house and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year. In total, this house had nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for 2006. (Source: just about anywhere in the news last month online including Reuters AP) PLEASE Scroll down.. House 1 is the home of George and Laura Bush, in Crawford,Texas.
