Re: [Clonezilla-live] How to Clone Only Some Partitions From Source Linux Disk?

2024-05-05 Thread Steven Shiau
In that case, you can clone that 3 times. I.e., clone 1st partition,
then 2nd partition, and 3 partition.
You can use the command line to do that. When you finish the 1st one, it
prompts a green command, and you can just replace the source and
destination partitions in that command.

Ubuntu 10.04 is 14 years ago... So DRBL/Clonezilla won't be able to run
that.

Any reason you can not use Clonezilla live to do that?
If you want to use server function, you can try:
1. https://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-SE/use_clonezilla_live_in_drbl.php
2.
https://clonezilla.org//fine-print-live-doc.php?path=clonezilla-live/doc/11_lite_server

I tried

This is no surprise given the age of this system.

I tried downloading Clonezilla from https://clonezilla.org/

But, I didn't find any such thing.

Any ideas where I could find a clonezilla .deb for

In Clonezilla today (3.1.2-9) when setting up a connection to a SMB
share for device-image mode, it prompts for a security mode (auto vs
ntlm).

What auto actually does under the hood is a bit unclear. At least in
Microsoft land (and I'm not a good person to speak on Windows auth
internals), you have three authentication methods - Negotiate,
Kerberos, and NTLM. NTLM is then broken down into NTLM2 and NTLM1
(hopefully no  one is using NTLM1 these days). Negotiate tries Kerberos
first and fallsback to NTLM2 if Kerberos fails.

Microsoft recently made announcements that they're going to try to
phase out NTLM entirely from Windows. This could impact Clonezilla
users who use Microsoft SMB shares. At some point in the future - by
default - Kerberos may be the only method for authentication, and it's
not clear if Clonezilla supports Kerberos for authentication today.

Obviously this can turn into a rabbit hole quickly - new firewall
requirements, time becomes significantly more important, etc etc.

I'm not familiar at all with MIT KRB5 on GNU/Linux distros so as
mentioned before, I am just throwing this out there for someone who's
smarter than I to consider.

Re: [Clonezilla-live] Feature Request for Clonezilla

2024-01-28 Thread Steven Shiau
I do not think we will change that. The reason for using a directory as
an image is it's easier for us to expand or add new features.

Everything in a directory is so clear and easy to identify its content.
In GNU/Linux, a directory is just like a file. If you really need to
make them as a single file, just tar it.

Dear Steven,

I have attempted cloning CentOS 7.9 Linux server to Synology NAS using
Clonezilla for a major construction company in Singapore on 23 Jan 2024 Tuesday.

However, "Use SSH server" wouldn't work. I keep getting connection refused.

But "Use SAMBA server (Network Neighborhood server)" works. And I stick with
that.

Thank you.

No problem. Enjoy Clonezilla!

Re: [Clonezilla-live] Clonezilla don't speech immediately after selected this feature

2023-10-14 Thread Steven Shiau

Hi Gigi,
Did you mean you need the speech for language and keyboard selections?
Or did you mean you need that for booting progress?

Hi,

I'm blind and I apreciated the speech feature on Clonezilla.

Therefore, it's don't work immediately after selected the relative

I'm discovered this helping me with an instant OCR phone software such

If it's possible speech must starts before language selection, please
solve this issue.

I have a single 500 gb LVM2 partition with /root, /swap, /opt, & /home
blocks.  I don't really understand Grub2 but apparently the /boot
files are a subdirectory of Grub and not part of the partition?

These are the config, initramfs, System.map, and vmlinuz files needed
for booting.

I've tried cloning the drive 3 times using the latest Clonezilla live,
using disk to disk to try to make a backup on an external usb drive.

The clone is successful, but none of the boot files ever get cloned,
and thus the usb is not bootable nor mountable because it doesn't have
a  file system without the boot files.  Therefore in the event of of
main disk corruption, crash, etc. and the need to restore from the
USB, it wouldn't work because there are no boot files cloned to the usb.

So how would I go about making a useable backup disk with Clonezilla
given the grub2 problems I've encountered?

Hi,

I have apparently successfully used Clonezilla live to create a disk

directories that  are on the disk are also not recognized.
Did you save the image using saveparts, and you want to restore the
image to a whole disk?
Please Boot Clonezilla live, mount your image repository, and enter
command line prompt to run:

1. sudo -i
2. df -h
3. mount
4. tree -h /home/partimag

Please show the results of 2-4.

Thanks.

Steven

ii) The menu only shows the options to save disks or partitions - the
restore options are not present.

I used clonezilla-live-3.1.0-22-amd64.iso to create a bootable USB.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what is happening here, because
at present Clonezilla is not a tool that I could rely on.

e.g., "clonezilla-live-3.1.0-22-amd64.zip".

The amd64 version
clonezilla-live-3.1.0-22-amd64.iso

How did you use that?

Created an image of a 32 GB pny SD card with previous version.

Please let us know your steps in detail so that we can help you.

Used a 64 bit SD card ADATA brand from
device - image
restore image
Used the same ratio -k option
swapped  the SDcard systemd reports the error message
Have tried same size 32GB SD cards same brand and I get error
messags that the card is not the same size.  I have only
succeeded on 1 of 4 or 5 attempts and with RaspiOS as with Fedora
I get that root account locked and cannot login but error message.

So it looks the OS you were cloning is about Raspberry PI? It's
ARM-based, but the file system should be OK if you put the SD card
to x86 machine.
As for the "root account locked", did you mean you boot the
restored RaspiOS and it's locked? Not booting Clonezilla live, and
it's locked, right?

I saved an image of a Fedora 38 aarch64 of a raspberry pi 4 machine.
I restored it to another SDcard, but when booting it up I encounter
that message.

I have successfully cloned raspiOS.before but sometimes have
encountered problems with same size sdcards  as clonezilla has text
repeating that the contents do not fit on same size sdcard.  32GB pny
SDcard, reports 31.9 GB .

I use a 64bit Dell XPS 8940 machine to do the cloning.  I had cloned
Linux machines, windows machines but not FreeBSD machines(hot booting
problems), tried rescue with DVD but no success so I gave up trying.
I have read the Fedora documention but still encounter the same problem.

I check the contents of the cloned SDcard and the home directories are
there, but the contents of the downloads folder report input/output
error.  Fedora no longer requires su - account and one uses sudo.  I
do not understand why root account is locked.  I had not had this
issue before.

The raspiOS boots correctly, the Fedora 38 boots correctly, but the
cloned one returns the bootup problems mentioned.  No matter what I
try I get same error message.  Fedora uses BTRFS in case it is important.

I have very limited ARM booting experience, so...
If anyone on this mailing has some experience about ARM cloning, please
share that.

Thanks.

Steven

Antonio

If so, then maybe you have to find where the RaspiOS has such a
mechanism. Sometimes it uses hardware-specific ID in the
/etc/fstab so that it can not be cloned. You have to change that
to software-based so that it can be cloned, for example.

I was just hit two days ago by a bug. Probably a bug related to btrfs

making in unusable.

Details: I wanted to clone a presently in  use sata 480Go ssd in an
asus N550jk computer (intel i7) to an nvme 512Go disk aimed to an asus
tuf 706iu (amd rysen) computer. Many partitions on it. nvme in an usb3
nvme dock.

Clonezilla-live-3.0.2-21-amd64.iso on a Ventoy usb pen.

no error message at the end of the clone, done mostly with default
options. None of the two openSUSE install on the disk could boot, when
Windows 10 boot correctly.

At first I suspected an UID/fstab problem, but in the end I could see
a lot of system files have quotation marks in ls -l result.

Once a fresh Tumbleweed install done on the (obsolete) openSUSE Leap
15.3 partition, I noticed that these system files on the root of
faulty Tumbleweed where zero length files.

I suspect the problem come from btrfs snapshot/subvols management, the
link between updated and non updated files is broken.

Old ssd partition and faulty Tumbleweed partition are still available
for check is necessary (some files where changed in the way of trying
to boot the system)

It probably would cost extra programming time or something.

Re: [Clonezilla-live] NVME ssd

2022-08-15 Thread Steven Shiau
Clonezilla supports the disk device name like /dev/nvme0n1, so maybe
it's due to the Linux kernel from 20220620-jammy does not support your
hardware.
Please try different versions of Clonezilla live, e.g., 3.0.2-9 or
20220729-kinetic:

https://clonezilla.org/downloads.php

Hi all-

I recently had the pleasure of trying to figure out why my file system
isn't mounted to something like /de/sda1 etc.

I found out it is because of NVME.

If I had know I would have got a computer with SATA SSD instead.

I just wanted to report that *alternative stable*-20220620-jammy
<https://mg.narl.org.tw/mg-cgi/mg_redirect?dmn=nchc.narl.org.tw=62F1F1EE.00044AAB=1660023278=https%3A%2F%2Fclonezilla%2Eorg%2Fdownloads%2Fdownload%2Ephp%3Fbranch%3Dalternative> didn't
provide something similar to /dev/sda so I could select from source.

I can't use AHCI or something like that either in my UEFI.

It detected the partions but not the equivalent of /dev/sda for NVME.

I hope you all know what this means because it is kinf of a foreign
gizmo to me.

I joined this list because I think clonezilla would be awesome for
making backups, and I eagerly await a version where I can try a backup
with NVME.

I am using luckybackup rsync GUI and wasabi for the time being.

Is there something obvious I am missing between the two methods?

Looks like the image was saved for partitions (saveparts), not for a
whole disk (savedisk)?
If you want Clonezilla to restore the whole disk, including the boot
mechanism, you have to use "savedisk" to save the image.

Hi Gigi,
Not sure if the Linux kernel does not support your hardware, or it's due
to your hardware requires proprietary firmware.
I tested 3.0.2-6 and it works on my old laptop. However, it does not
work with my new laptop.
I will do more tests to find why.

detects LUKS, the LV and so on...

I did the test and clonezilla detected LUKS and all my LV.
Result is similar than whole disk nvme0n1 except it didn't clone
nvme0n1p1/2/3/4 of course.
It isn't what I'm looking for though...

Of course, I could save all my LV and then delete the ones I don't want (here
myLvmHome and myLvmRoot) but it's really not optimized (more time-consuming and
more temporary space needed on backup drive).

It could be really great if clonezilla can clone specific LVs only.

If this is already the case, please tell me what I missed because nowhere I can
choose LV (only disks or classic parts under the ncurse interface) and if I
force my LV name under the shell then the whole LVM is shutdown just before and
my LV not recognized hence.
Clonezilla actually does not support choosing LV only. No matter it's on
a unencrypted partition or on LUKS partition.
Hence so far you can only choose the partition which contains LV to save
the image.

NB: is there a way to ask clonezilla to save a full log or am I supposed to
pipe its output to `tee`?

`clonezilla | tee` doesn't work (probably because of the ncurse interface).
However, I've noticed that clonezilla log (more exactly: ocs-sr log) is saved
under /var/log/clonezilla.log. Good.

Suggestion: I think there is a message at the very end of ocs-sr saying that log is saved
there. But it disappears very quickly. Maybe you could add a stop after this message
(like "press Enter to continue...")?

Will think about this.

Steven

We have some improvements about LUKS in Clonezilla live >= 3.0.0-21:

Please give it a try and let us know the results.

partclone.ext4 --clone --source /dev/mapper/myLvmGroup-myLvmVar --compresscmd 'zst
-19 --threads=0' --output /home/partimg/clone_myLvmVar.img.zst --logfile
/home/partimg/clone_myLvmVar.log"

With some more testing, I managed to encrypt the generated file with gpg. Full
commands below:

GPG_TTY=$(tty)
export GPG_TTY
partclone.ext4 --clone --source /dev/mapper/myLvmGroup-myLvmVar --logfile
/home/partimag/partclone_myLvmVar.log | gzip -9 --stdout | gpg --symmetric
--output /home/partimag/partclone_myLvmVar.img.gz.gpg

This being said, my questions remain:
* Is it possible to achieve the same result with a higher-level clonezilla
command like ocs-sr?
* Can clonezilla save logs somewhere apart from just saving the command that
was used?

Thanks in advance :)

Re: [Clonezilla-live] save remote to iso

No. Clonezilla does not support saving an image to an iso file directly.
It can only be done by saving a source device to an image, then convert
the image to an iso file:

Re: [Clonezilla-live] General Question: remote imaging of encrypted EXT4 partitions

Clonezilla does not support LUKS, so it uses dd to image all the device.
Not the used blocks only.

Hi all,

I'm using Clonezilla to make periodically image backups of my OpenSuse VPS.
Booting VPS with Clonezilla, imnage to be stored via ssh to my local OpenSuse
PC, at home. Finally to an external USB hdd. Images are additionaly, to regular
delta-based rsnapshot backups.
File systems are all ext4, except small boot partition.

Recognized that Clonezilla is able to send only data for "used" disk space via
network, for unecrypted disks, makes it much faster.

Had to image my company laptop, win10, encrypted hdd, all NTFS, once. 1 TB hdd,
only 300+ GB in use. Not 100% sure, but AFAI remember Clonezilla sent all 1 TB.
But I'm sure that clonezilla didn't ask for a passphrase to unlock. Reasonable,
as some proprietary enc. solution on that laptop.

My question, not tested: For an encrypted (LUKS) hdd on Linux, LVM/EXT4, is
Clonezilla also sending the while disk via network? Or unlocking first before
imaging, and sending only the used blocks?

stay healthy!

That depends on the NTFS data blocks you have. Clonezilla will only
clone the used blocks.

Re: [Clonezilla-live] Unable to restore partition image in VirtualBox

2020-04-08 Thread Steven Shiau
Clonezilla does not support the conversion for MBR to GPT.
Virtualbox can handle uEFI, so please check its manual.

No, if the grub related files are not found on the restored device, the

Hence what you mentioned won't happen. This option was enabled by

2019-10-29 Thread Steven Shiau

This release of Clonezilla live (2.6.4-10) includes major
  enhancements and bug fixes.
ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES from 2.6.3-7

The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This
release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of
2019/Oct/24).
Linux kernel was updated to 5.3.7-1.
Update Brazilian Portuguese translation. Thank to Rafael
Fontenelle for updating that. Ref:
https://gitlab.com/stevenshiau/drbl/merge_requests/13
An option "-ps" or "--play-sound" was added in expert mode so
that when Clonezilla job is done, a sound can be played. Thanks
to David McCracken for suggesting this.
Add an option -icol for ocs-live-feed-img which can be used to
skip checking the running environment is Clonezilla live or not.
Add a Singularity recipe sample file
singularity-debian-ocs.def which can be used to create a
Singularity image.

BUG FIXES

Only mail the results of Clonezilla job to root as MTA is
running.
Update function parse_cmdline_option so that it can parse the
boot parameter like ocs_repository from grub. Thanks to
jeff.sadowski for reporting this issue. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Help/thread/ebf65f9bdd/
Machine-id on GNU/Linux should not be created in 2nd partition

[Clonezilla-live] Stable Clonezilla live 2.6.3-7 Released

2019-09-17 Thread Steven Shiau

This release of Clonezilla live (2.6.3-7) includes major
  enhancements and bug fixes.
ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES from 2.6.2-15

The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This
release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of
2019/Sep/03).
Linux kernel was updated to 5.2.9-2.
  Partclone was updated to 0.3.13+git0819-2f1830e-drbl1.
Remove zfs-fuse since it's too old. The support for zfs
mounting using openzfs can be found in Ubuntu-based Clonezilla
live >= 20190903 releases.
Package partclone-utils was updated with new upstream on
Aug/29/2019: https://github.com/prekageo/partclone-utils
Modify parameters about BT in drbl-ocs.conf: Use
gen-torrent-from-ptcl (ezio-ptcl) to create torrent file from
torrent.info, not using transmission-create anymore. This could
save a lot of time when the source image is big.
  Remove "-t 3 -k 60" from ezio_seeder_opt, i.e., keep ezio
seeder in the server all the time until it's killed by
ocs-live-feed-img stop.
Add a new sample program custom-ocs-3.

BUG FIXES

Package live-tools was updated to 20190627. The issue about
poweroff/reboot should have been fixed: failed to execute
shutdown binary freezing execution.
Add thin-provisioning-tools in drbl/clonezilla live packages
list, and device-mapper-persistent-data in the PKG_TO_QUERY of
drbl.conf. Thanks to Tseng Wynn (wynn1212 _at_ gmail com) for
reporting this bug.
Fix a typo in zh_TW.UTF-8. Thanks to Chih-Hsuan Yen:
https://gitlab.com/stevenshiau/drbl/merge_requests/12
Avoid torrent.info created by Partclone being included in the
torrent file. This should solve the issue:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_server_edition/thread/15c3efbffa
and
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/aba35adf97
Separate 32-bit and 64-bit syslinux when running makeboot.sh.
Thanks to Martin Mokrejs for reporting this issue. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/326/
Update the mechanism to generate new machine-id for restored
GNU/Linux. Thanks to Peter Sun for reporting the issue and
providing the solution.
Add option -iui for ocs-onthefly, and implement the
ocs-update-initrd for restored GNU/Linux.
Bug fixed: the source IP address for disk to remote disk was
not shown in the source (server) side when there is one NIC
configured.

[Clonezilla-live] Stable Clonezilla live (2.6.2-15) Released

2019-07-11 Thread Steven Shiau

This release of Clonezilla live (2.6.2-15) includes major
enhancements and bug fixes.
  ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES from 2.6.1-25

The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This
release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of
  2019/Jul/07).
Linux kernel was updated to 4.19.37-5.
Package live-config was updated to 5.20190519.drbl1.
Make sure label will have one name only in
  update-efi-nvram-boot-entry.
Improve the mechanism to update uEFI nvram boot entry. It's
  the same way as boot-local-efi.cfg.
Default to run ocs-update-initrd for the restored OS when
running ocs-sr. This helps to make initramfs work for
different hardware, especially the GNU/Linux distribution
which uses dracut, e.g., CentOS. The option "-iui" can be used
for ocs-sr to ignore running ocs-update-initrd.
Language files were updated: ca_ES, de_DE, es_ES, fr_FR,
  hu_HU, it_IT, ja_JP, pl_PL, and tr_TR. Thanks to René Mérou,
Michael Vinzenz, Juan Ramón Martínez, Jean-Francois
Nifenecker, Greg Hefty, Gianfranco Gentili, Akira YOSHIYAMA,
  Kris, and Volkan Gezer.
The boot menu was sorted. KMS with large font (for HiDPI
monitor) is now at 1st level with hotkey "l". Two more menus
were added in uEFI boot menu: 1. uEFI firmware setup 2.
  Clonezilla live version info
The mechanism to search local OS on the 1st hard drive of
uEFI machine was updated. Now the OS name can be shown in the
  boot menu if it's found.
Package rdfind was added in Clonezilla live.

  BUG FIXES

To avoid ezio quits too quickly on server side, add option
  "-t 1 -k 60" when starting ezio.
No need to press enter when batch mode is off about warning
  MBR disk > 4 TB.
Package live-boot was updated to 1:20190627-drbl1, which
uses ntfs-3g instead of kernel module ntfs.ko to mount the
  file system. Ref:
https://salsa.debian.org/stevenshiau-guest/live-boot/commit/9d6ee1504a8ec6d1f386b12be24113df9c23a6b0
In addition, it also addresses this memdisk issue:
https://salsa.debian.org/stevenshiau-guest/live-boot/commit/b3a1cb85646f363ab5c4d7b045000ef6dbf33699,
and https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gparted/issues/50 live-boot
was patched to fix an DNS issue in initramfs:
https://salsa.debian.org/stevenshiau-guest/live-boot/commit/ed2bc296f8d113e2bb3aa702e2ababd1bcfd64ac
Package live-tools was patched
https://salsa.debian.org/stevenshiau-guest/live-tools/commit/7b0ed1e19034925fd0a17626b5b561f24fd5d291
This would avoid systemd shutdown/reboot failure. Otherwise
when live-medium eject is run, it would cause an error when
shutting down or rebooting: failed to execute shutdown binary
  freezing execution

[Clonezilla-live] Stable Clonezilla live (2.6.1-25) Released

2019-04-28 Thread Steven Shiau

This release of Clonezilla live (2.6.1-25) includes major
enhancements and bug fixes.
  ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES from 2.6.0-37

The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This
release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of
  2019/Apr/20).
From this release the AMD64 version works for uEFI secure
  boot.
Linux kernel was updated to 4.19.28-2.
Partclone was updated to 0.3.12+git00e0212.
Package ezio-static was updated to 1.1.8.
Package vbetool was added. Thanks to Joerg Schiermeier for
  asking this
Package mbmon was added.
Add USB NIC modules in initramfs of live system. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_server_edition/thread/de7c4f810a/
A new mode for Clonezilla lite server was added: massive
deployment from raw device using bittorrent mechanism. About
  the usage, please check https://clonezilla.org/show-live-doc-content.php?topic=clonezilla-live/doc/12_lite_server_BT_from_dev.

For Clonezilla lite sever, change ezio_seeder_extra_opt as
ezio_seeder_opt. Add two more options: ezio_leecher_opt and
ezio_common_opt in drbl-ocs.conf. These three options can also
be overwritten if it's assigned in boot parameters.
Assign "-t 1" for ezio_leecher_opt so that ezio will timeout
  in 1 min.
Add nuttcp as an alternative to netcat in ocs-onthefly. Add
dialog for choosing compression algorithm in expert mode.
Option "-u" was added in the dialog of expert mode to use
  nuttcp.
To avoid OOM killer to kill ezio, we use the multi torrent
files support (ezio >= 1.1.6) and limit the cache size. It
can be tuned by ezio_cache_ratio in drbl-ocs.conf.
Add a mechanism to reuse image for BT from raw device mode.
The option -mdst-img can be used to assign the existing pseudo
  image.

  BUG FIXES

Can't create disk image if swap is provided by logical
volume listed in crypttab. Thanks to Constantino Michailidis
for providing the patch file. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/314/
Add sleep .1 before cat /proc/partitions to file. Thanks to
  Zibarov Volodymyr. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/318/
Label parsed from EFI boot entry was wrong when multiple OSs
are available. This should fix the issue that bricks Dell's
  machine: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/310/.
Thanks to Dell US & Taiwan, and AMI Taiwan.
Live USB version of Clonezilla live should not link
  /home/partimag to /run/live/medium/home/partimag/ when there
is no images exist in /run/live/medium/home/partimag/. The
  find command was wrong.
Option "-p poweroff" of ocs-sr did not work when saving
partition image with image checking is enabled. Previous fix
only works for savedisk. Thanks to ski-777 for reporting this.

Re: [Clonezilla-live] clonezilla can't list my SSD partition on ubuntu 18.10.

2019-03-27 Thread Steven Shiau
Which version of Clonezilla live did you use?
This is usually the Linux kernel/hardware support issue. Please give
testing Clonezilla live 2.6.1-19 or 20190320-disco a try:
https://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
They come with newer Linux kernels so it might support your hardware.

[Clonezilla-live] Stable Clonezilla live (2.6.0-37) Released

2019-01-10 Thread Steven Shiau

This release of Clonezilla live (2.6.0-37) includes major
  enhancements and bug fixes.
ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES from 2.5.6-22

The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This
release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of
2019/Jan/08).
Linux kernel was updated to 4.19.13-1.
  Partclone was updated to 0.3.12+gitfeb58af.
Package ldmtool and haveged were added.
Package curl was added. Thanks to andrew441973 for asking
this.
Package network-manager was added so that user can use "nmtui"
to configure network if it's necessary, especially for wifi.
Make unknown fs as "dd", and the image name for partition
like: sda3.dd-img.aa is now a legacy. It's replaced by
sda3.dd-ptcl-img.lzma.aa. Rewrite the same mechanism in
ocs-onthefly.
In addition to massive-deployment mode, the interactive-client
mode was added so that lite server can provide the ability to
enter interactive mode of Clonezilla live in the clients.
Let live-build 20180618 handle uEFI boot, so
ocs-put-signed-grub2-efi-bldr and ocs-gen-grub2-efi-bldr are
deprecated. The changes:

  /boot/grub/efiboot.img is /boot/grub/efi.img now.
/EFI/boot/grub.cfg is moved to /boot/grub/grub.cfg now.

Temporarily disable dislocker-find in ocs-get-part-info due to
some issues: (1) It's broken in Debian Sid:
https://bugs.debian.org/906430; (2)
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Open_discussion/thread/e1264596

BUG FIXES

To RAM option should also copy EFI dir so that the recovery
iso/zip script works. Thanks to Mr. Brandon Lancaster for
reporting this issue.
Not to check source device busy in network mode for
ocs-onthefly. Thanks to Xuewen Wang for providing this patch.

Partclone: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/305/.
Thanks to Laurent B for reporting this.
Return code for checksum was wrong. Thanks to Korver.Kirk
(Kirk.Korver _at_ IGT com) for reporting this. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/mailman/message/36454003/
Failed to create correct files for BT mechanism when the file
system is in dd mode. This bug was introduced when
".dd-ptcl-img." file
  format was added.
  Stop using "--allowed_dir" for ocs-bttrack in ocs-btsrv,
otherwise it made starting tracker very slow when there are huge
number of files in the dir.
Failed to detect lzma compression for the partition image file
$pt.dd-img.aa. Thanks to Phil P. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/307/.
Remove "-i" from fatresize options in ocs-resize-part. Thanks
to MaDaTyGo for reporting this. Ref:
https://github.com/stevenshiau/clonezilla/issues/41
Program ocs-chkimg should keep the ocs_sr_mode in
/var/lib/clonezilla/ocs-vars so that ocs-live-run-menu can read
it. This can avoid dialog be run without waiting for user to
press enter. Thanks to Grant Chapman (grantdchapman _at_ gmail

Re: [Clonezilla-live] Cloning Windows 10 OEM

2018-11-17 Thread Steven Shiau
Yes. Clonezilla can do that for you. However, you have to deal with the
license issue, and the drivers on the restored machines.
In addition, it's recommended to install sysprep from MS before you take
an image.

Re: [Clonezilla-live] problems with clonezilla-live by pxe

2018-09-19 Thread Steven Shiau
How about giving testing Clonezilla live a try, i.e., 2.6.0-5:
https://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
It comes with Linux kernel 4.18 so the results might be different.

[Clonezilla-live] Stable Clonezilla live (2.5.5-38) Released

2018-04-11 Thread Steven Shiau
This release of Clonezilla live (2.5.5-38) includes major enhancements
and bug fixes.

ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES
* The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This
release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2018/Mar/30).

* Linux kernel was updated to 4.15.11-1.
* Partclone was updated to 0.3.11-drbl3 with some libraries updated.
//NOTE// New image format is used in this release. It is different from
the one saved by Partclone 0.2.x.
* New massive deployment mechanism bittorrent was added. //NOTE//
Clonezilla has to convert the original image to the special format when
bittorrent mode is used. This will require more disk space in the image
repository.
* Switch keymap configuration method from console-data to
keyboard-configuration. Ref:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=893612
* Update language files de_DE, es_ES, fr_FR, hu_HU, ja_JP, it_IT,
tr_TR and sk_SK. Thanks to Michael Vinzenz, Juan Ramón Martínez,
Jean-Francois Nifenecker, Greg Hefty, Akira YOSHIYAMA, ianfranco
Gentili, Volkan Gezer and Ondrej Dzivy Balucha.
* Add channel bonding option when configuring network. Thanks to
panther_1 for requesting this. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/support-requests/61/
* Make prep-ocsroot can use disk block device (e.g., /dev/sdc) as
image repository. Thanks to Riksoft for requesting this. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/288/
* Add options -pe and -pfe to ocs-sr. This allows user to enter
password in the command options although it's not safe. Thanks to ub2
_at_ gmx ch for requesting this. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/d3af2134
* New compression lz4/lz4mt (-z8/-z8p) and zstd/pzstd (-z9/-z9p)
were added in expert mode.
* Make ocs-chnthn work for device name like /dev/nvme0n1p1. This
change should really fix the issue reported here:
https://github.com/stevenshiau/clonezilla/issues/30
* Remove "-p 16" for pigz in drbl-ocs.conf. It should let pigz to
decide that automatically.
* Package drbl-chntpw is no more used, and now we switch to use
reged from package chntpw.
* The file efiboot.img has been moved to /boot/grub/ from /EFI/image
from /EFI/image/.
* Add a workaround to make dnsmasq relay work for uEFI network boot
clients. i.e., we have to assign the tftp server IP address in grub
network boot loader. This is only necessary when dnsmasq is used to
relay the DHCP request from clients to existing DHCP service. Ref:
http://lists.thekelleys.org.uk/pipermail/dnsmasq-discuss/2017q1/011124.html
* Add boot parameter ocs_netlink_timeout so that the network link
detection timeout can be assigned for ocs-live-netcfg.
* Add an option -cbm to ocs-live-feed-img. Besides, remove boot
parameter ocs_litesrv_mode. It's better to assign that in the command
line option (-dm) when running ocs-live-feed-img, e.g.,
ocs-live-feed-img -cbm netboot -dm auto-detect -g auto -e1 auto -e2 -r
-x -j2 -sc0 -p reboot -md multicast --clients-to-wait 1
--max-time-to-wait 300 start myimg sda.
* Support using UUID and LABEL as image repository, i.e., local_dev
for image repository can be assigned as:
dev:///LABEL|UUID|PARTLABEL|PARTUUID=uuid|label. E.g.,
ocs_repository="dev:///UUID=84b012cc-5a4c-41e2-bf20-620d028072cb"

BUG FIXES
* Jfbterm should not exit when lite server is running. It would
terminate the required service for clients to restore image, especially
BT service in non-English environment.
* Cnvt-ocs-dev failed to convert EBR (like sda2-ebr). Thanks to
killuaDK for reporting this:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Open_discussion/thread/b851e095
* Ocs-chnthn now supports modifying Win10 hostname. Thanks to
František Griga for reporting this issue. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/support-requests/100/
* /EFI/centos/grubx64.efi should be before /EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi.
Thanks to Fritzinger, Bernd (Bernd.Fritzinger _at_ bruker com).

ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES*

 * The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release
is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2017/Jul/26).
 * Linux kernel was updated to 4.11.6-1.
 * Partclone was updated to 0.2.91.

scenarios. Therefore re-arrange the main menu of Clonezilla live as:
   "device-image", "device-device", "remote-source", "remote-dest",
"lite-server", "lite-client". Thanks to Aaron Burling for providing
   suggestions.

Bruno Vila Vilariño for reporting this issue.
 * Failed to use the serial number with space. Thanks to Matt
Broadstone for providing the patch. Ref:

2017-02-20 Thread Steven Shiau

This release of Clonezilla live (2.5.0-25) includes major
  enhancements and bug fixes.
ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES

The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This
release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of
2017/Feb/20).
Linux kernel was updated to 4.9.6-3.
Language file sk_SK was updated. Thanks to Ondrej Dzivy
Balucha.
Language file es_ES was revised. Thanks to Pablo Hinojosa Nava
and Juan Ramón Martínez.
Package sshpass, keychain, nmap, monitoring-plugins-basic, and
bicon were added.
An option "-noabo" was added to ocs-sr so that the image can
be accessed by others, not only the owner.
Add local boot menu in the uEFI Clonezilla live.

BUG FIXES

Detect if terminal supports color output before using color
outputs in the terminal. Thanks to TF for asking this. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/ec46f3a3/
When creating partition table on a disk, Clonezilla should
wait for partition name with extra p, like nvme0n1p1, to take
effect. Thanks Bruno Vila Vilariño for reporting this issue.
Failed to use the serial number with space. Thanks to Matt
Broadstone for providing the patch.
  Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/266/
Package whiptail was updated by applying the patch from
upstream which improves handling of long strings in whiptail
menu:

Re: [Clonezilla-live] Clonezilla a windows disk from larger drive to asmaller drive?

2016-11-26 Thread Steven Shiau
If you meant "clone", not "image", then actually Clonezilla is not
really good at cloning larger disk to smaller one. This is because
Clonezilla uses block-based program (Partclone) to clone the file
system, not file-based.
There is an option to use the option "-k1" in the expert mode for this
purpose, however, it's not 100% working.

[Clonezilla-live] Stable Clonezilla live (2.4.9-17) Released

2016-10-24 Thread Steven Shiau
This release of Clonezilla live (2.4.9-17) includes major enhancements
and bug fixes.

ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES

  * The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release
is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2016/Oct/21).
  * Linux kernel was updated to 4.7.8-1.
  * Remove "nodmraid" from boot parameters in drbl-ocs.conf. Now
fakeraid/firmware raid is supported.
  * Language files hu_HU, ja_JP.UTF-8, de_DE, fr_FR, it_IT, and es_ES
was updated. Thanks to Greg Marki, Akira YOSHIYAMA, Michael Vinzenz,
Jean-Francois Nifenecker, Gianfranco Gentili, Juan Ramón Martínez
and Alex Ibáñez López.
  * The drbl/clonezilla live version info will be put in
/etc/ocs/ocs-live.conf, and when an image is saved, the info will be
saved in Info-packages.txt.
  * Applied patches from Aaron Burling, so now when mounting image
repository, it is able to browse the directories recursively.
  * Force to make timeout of dhclient as 60 secs. Debian uses 60, but
Ubuntu uses 300. Too long. Thanks to Cecile, Adam (Adam.Cecile /at/
hitec lu) for reporting this.
  * Add mechanism to detect bitlocker and Microsoft Reserved Partition
(MSR) in ocs-get-part-info.
  * Add options -sfsck and -senc in the Clonezilla live interactive menu
for saving image modes. Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling /at/
lkstevens wednet edu) for this idea.
  * Ask the post action (choose, reboot, poweroff) before starting
cloning. Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling /at/ lkstevens
wednet edu) for this idea.
  * Add entry points by using boot parameters ocs_savedisk_prerun,
ocs_saveparts_prerun, ocs_restoredisk_prerun, and
ocs_restoreparts_prerun in ocs-sr. Thanks to Aaron Burling
(aaron_burling /at/ lkstevens wednet edu) for these ideas.
  * Boot parameter ocs_overwrite_postaction has higher priority than the
action assigned by option "-p" in ocs-sr, and "-pa" in ocs-onthefly.
The value for ocs_overwrite_postaction is:

[choose|reboot|poweroff]-on-[restoredisk|restoreparts|savedisk|saveparts|clone]
E.g., choose-on-restoredisk means the postaction for restoredisk
will always be choose no matter what is assigned in -p of ocs-sr or
-pa of ocs-onthefly. Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling /at/
lkstevens wednet edu) for this idea.
  * Now ocs-live-preload checks if
/opt/{overwrite-all-boot-param,overwrite-part-boot-param} exists
(Downloaded from root of ocs_preload). File overwrite-all-boot-param
is to overwrite the whole /proc/cmdline, while
overwrite-part-boot-param only overwrites part of the variables in
/proc/cmdline. Especially those "ocs_*" parameters. Thanks to Aaron
Burling (aaron_burling /at/ lkstevens wednet edu) for this idea and
providing sample codes.
  * Packages dislocker, ext4magic, myrescue, os-prober, powertop were added.

BUG FIXES

  * Inform kernel partition changes only when disk is not busy. This
should solve the issue: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/265/
  * Replace boot parameter noprompt with noeject since live-boot >= v3
uses noeject, not noprompt.
  * Live-boot failed to mount vfat device as the boot media for
Clonezilla live. Thanks to Little Vulpix for reporting this issue.
Ref:

https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/ba31ffc8
  * Failed to create the checksum files for files in LV, i.e., when
option "-gmf" or "-cmf" is enabled. Thanks to Mircea Dan. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/260/
  * Change /proc/sys/vm/highmem_is_dirtyable to 1 when running i686
Linux kernel and the RAM size is larger than 8 GB. Thanks to Little
Vulpix for this suggestion. Ref:

https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/ba31ffc8
  * Clean file system/LVM info before creating partition table. Thanks
to Mircea Dan (byreal /at/ users sf net) and Pete Morris (morrispj
/at/ jmu edu) for reporting this issue. Ref:
https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/254/
  * Disable service systemd-timesyncd. Clonezilla live should not change
the system time. Thanks to Rick and rfried for reporting this issue.

[Clonezilla-live] Stable Clonezilla live (2.4.7-8) Released

2016-07-05 Thread Steven Shiau

* This release of Clonezilla live (2.4.7-8) includes
  major enhancements and
  bug fixes. *
   ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES
  * The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This
  release is
based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2016/Jun/27).
  * Linux kernel was updated to 4.6.2-2.
  * Partclone was updated to 0.2.89. A btrfs issue has been fixed.
  * Cloudfuse was updated to 0.9+redbogit871a98f-drbl2, i.e. the
  version from
redbo with patches from Am1GO. Thanks to maple52046 (maple52046 at
  gmail com).
  * Partclone-utils was updated to 0.4.1.
  * When option "-k1" or "-k2" in the TUI is chosen, "-icds" is on
  automatically.
  * Add "-batch" in the TUI for expert saving mode.
  * Provide an option to mount image repository again when failing
  in ocs-
live-repository. "ask_user" is a reserved name to be used as the
  Samba
domain and account and SSHFS account in the URI so that user can
  input
their own names. Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling at
  lkstevens
  wednet edu) for these ideas.
  * If failing to mount sshfs and samba server as image repository,
  clonezilla now asks if retrying.
  * Use shorter name for fsck-related options, i.e. "-fsck-src-part"
  is
replaced by "-fsck", and "-fsck-src-part-y" is replaced by
  "-fsck-y".
  * Reuse the parsed partition info when detecting the
  data/swap/extended
partitions. Thanks to starnavi for this suggestion. Ref: https://
sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/ba256b4b
  * Add support for device /dev/nbd. Thanks to Mircea Dan for this
  suggestion. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Help/
  thread/d2d2a480/
  * Boot parameter ocs_preload now supports mount command for
  nfs/cifs to
  preload files. E.g. ocs_preload="mount -t cifs
  //192.168.120.2/images/ /
  tmp/cifs -o user=administrator,password=yourpasswd" will preload
  files on
cifs server to /opt/ in Clonezilla live environment.
  * Add a mechanism so that image repository can be auto mounted
  with boot
parameter ocs_repository in URI format, e.g.
  ocs_repository="dev:///dev/
  sdf1" or ocs_repository="smb://wa-domain;jack:mypass@192.168.7.25/
images". Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling at
  lkstevens wednet
  edu) for this idea.
  * Live-boot was updated so that its toram parameter can be
  assigned as
  multiple modules (e.g. "live,syslinux")
  * Add supporting for grub on EBR (Extended Boot Record) imaging
  and
cloning. Thanks to Bill Wright (bill at blug org) for
  reporting this
  issue.

BUG FIXES
  * Failed to mount OpenStack swift image repository. Thanks to
  maple52046
(maple52046 at gmail com) for reporting this issue.
  * Failed to restore the boot loader on EBR (Extended Boot Record).
  Thanks
to Bill Wright (bill at blug org) for reporting this
  issue.
  * MBR (executable code area) data should be restored even it's GPT
  disk.
Some OS, e.g. ESXi 5.5 need that. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/

First dd the image, then use partclone to save the partitions if the
file system is supported by partclone. Of course you can use clonezilla
to do that, too.
>
> And then once it is written, how to I resize the partition to fit the media?
First you must have a equal or larger partition size. Once it's written,
the resizing depends on the file system. There is a program on
Clonezilla live called ocs-resize-part which you can use for this
purpose. You can use it like:
/usr/sbin/ocs-resize-part /dev/sdc1
to tune the file system on /dev/sdc1 to fit the partition size.

Oh, your case is uEFI, then grub is used for this mechanism. What I
mentioned was for legacy BIOS booting. The syslinux, which is used for
the boot mechanism in legacy BIOS (MBR), does support FAT, NTFS, EXT,
and BTRFS. However, for uEFI, it's better to use FAT.

Clonezilla does not change the partition table type. If the source disk
is MBR mode (MSDOS format), then the destination disk will be in MBR
mode. If the source is GPT mode, then the destination disk will be GPT
mode, too. I do not think your case is modified by Clonezilla.

Hi Michael,
OK, cool. It's nice to know now Clonezilla works for you.
I have updated the website, not only FAT, but also NTFS will work for
the live USB with syslinux.
Actually ext2/3/4, or btrfs is also working, but FAT and NTFS works for
both GNU/Linux and MS Windows, so I just list these two file systems.

[Clonezilla-live] Stable Clonezilla live (2.4.6-25) released

2016-05-31 Thread Steven Shiau

This release of Clonezilla live (2.4.6-25) includes minor
  enhancements and bug fixes.
ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES

The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This
release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of
2016/May/29).
Linux kernel was updated to 4.5.4-1.
Partclone was updated to 0.2.88. Some segfault issues have
been fixed.
Add support for boot parameter ocs_preload*. It can be used to
fetch tarall/zip/sh files from http(s), ftp, tftp, and local URL
then extract to /opt/. Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling
_at_ lkstevens wednet edu) for this idea and providing sample
codes.
  Add package dos2unix.
Add watch ocs-scan-disk for local block device in
prep-ocsroot.
Make ocs-install-grub work on Opensuse leap 42.
Add an error routine to makeboot.bat and makeboot64.bat.
Thanks to Robert Rubino.
Add new program ocs-match-checksum to match checksum in the
image and files in the block device.
The new example file mdisks-checksum was added. It can be used
to save or restore disk with checksum mechanism enabled.
Especially for deploying multiple disks.
An example gen-rec-iso was added. It could be used to create a
recovery ISO directly from the machine by Clonezilla live.
A new mechanism was added to inspect the files checksum in the
partition. To use it, enable "-gmf" option in expert mode when
saving an image and enable "-cmf" option when restoring image.
For disk to disk clone, use "-cmf" option. Thanks to Scott
Inglis (scottinglis _at_ me com) for this request.

BUG FIXES

Failed to change the host name of MS Windows. Now use iproute2
to get MAC address and IP address info in ocs-chnthn-functions.
Thanks to Richard Stanway for the patch.
Renaming live image extension to .tar when using tar. Thanks
to minh hieu trinh for reporting this.

Did you mean you want to make a recovery ISO/zip, but the disk space is
limited?
If so, sorry, yes, it does need the working space to do that.

[Clonezilla-live] Stable Clonezilla live (2.4.5-23) Released

2016-02-10 Thread Steven Shiau
This release of Clonezilla live (2.4.5-23) includes minor enhancements and
bug fixes.

ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES
* The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release is
based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2016/Feb/10).
* Linux kernel was updated to 4.3.5-1. From Linux kernel v4, the default
union file system has been changed to overlay, therefore if you edit boot
parameter manually, you have to use "union=overlay". No more using
"union=aufs". Due to the linux kernel change in Debian repository, no
more i586 linux kernel, so now Debian-based Clonezilla live is only
released with 3 architectures: i686, i686-pae and amd64.

BUG FIXES
* Failed to set keyboard layout due to console-common was removed. Thanks
to Matthew M for reporting this. (https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/
support-requests/70/)

Those Info-*.txt files and *.list are used for reference. Normally it's
not directly related to the machine you want to restore.
The key is, the restored OS has to support your hardware. With that, you
can boot the OS on the different machine after the image is restored.
For MS Windows, you'd better to install sysprep before you take an image
if you want to restore the image to different hardware.

From the ipxe doc:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/cloudboot/cloudboot_img/cloudboot_1.0.kpxe?r==1447552673_mirror=jaist
Just append those boot parameters in the "chain" line.

union file system has been changed to overlay, therefore if you edit
boot parameter manually, you have to use union=overlay. No more using
union=aufs.
- Partclone was updated to 0.2.81-drbl2. Now it supports VMFS partition
= 256 GB. A TUI crash issue for vmfs was fixed. Updated xfs and e2fs
libs were used.
- Enabled vmfs3 and vmfs5 support since partclone has solved the issue.
- Live-boot was updated to 4.0.2-1.drbl4. Parameter nicif was added back.
- Program sfdisk (=2.26) is used as the default program to create GPT
partition. Program sgdisk is the backup plan.
- A better mechanism was added to get the linking status of network card
in ocs-live-netcfg.
- When /home/partimag is a mount point, prep-ocsroot should use skip
as the default item. Thanks to Bruce Solomon [rufovillosum _at_ yahoo com].
- NVME device is supported.

*** BUG FIXES ***
- The Unable to find target partition issue in GPT disk has been fixed.
- When the image saved from sda, for example, was restored to sdb, the
swap parttion was not restored correctly.
- Option -k1 failed due to ocs-expand-mbr-pt failed to read the output
of sfdisk = 2.26.
- The output file of update-efi-nvram-boot-entry failed to assign the
correct variables.
- Efibootmgr = 0.12 has newer output format. Thanks to johnv-valve for
reporting this (https://github.com/stevenshiau/clonezilla/issues/9).
- Failed to process LVM about PV on multiple partitions and LV with
snapshots. Thanks to SLLabs Louis and Shaun Rowland for providing the
patches.

Re: [Clonezilla-live] Saving a broken box with Clonezilla

2015-08-01 Thread Steven Shiau
Hi Michael,
Thank you very much for sharing this. It's nice to know Clonezilla rocks
for you.
As for the restoring image to smaller partition, well, that's really a
different story because the imaging engine we have developed, Partclone,
is a block-based program. It's not file-based. Therefore there is such a
limitation. This is described here:
http://drbl.org/faq/fine-print.php?path=./2_System/25_restore_larger_disk_to_smaller_one.faq#25_restore_larger_disk_to_smaller_one.faq

Steven.

On 07/31/2015 08:31 PM, Michael Munger wrote:
Not sure where to post this, but I wanted to share the love for
Clonezilla as well as post a mini-howto where Googler's can find it.

After replacing a motherboard, my Debian 8 box would not boot. This is
my primary workstation for development, sysadmin stuff, etc... so this
was a big deal. The motherboard had to be replaced because it was new
(from Amazon), but right out of the box, one of the memory slots was
bad. Amazon didn't have anymore stock, so I had to wait... they give you
30 days, and long story short, I had to buy a replacement locally at the
last minute to ensure I was able to return the bad board to Amazon.

I powered down via a normal shutdown, swapped the new Asus Sabertooth
X99 for the old one, put everything back together, and powered on.

It wouldn't boot. Of course, I wasted a lot of time unsure about whether
or not this was a motherboard problem or a system problem. Since the
system had been working fine to that point, I wasted several hours
screwing around with secure boot and other options before finally
deciding it was probably the OS.

Repairing the EFI / boot partition failed. Grub was dead. Nothing
 worked. Enter Clonezilla.

I decided to clone /dev/sda2, my root partition, as a backup, and
re-install. I figured: I should be able to re-install, then restore
that partition to the root, and get everything back.

I cloned /dev/sda2 without issue to two places: a spare internal drive
and an external drive (just in case), then reinstalled Debian 8.1.

Once it was up and booting, I tried to restore /dev/sda2 from the
backup, but the new installation of the OS was 10GB too small, and
Clonezilla didn't want to do the restore (Frustrating - Steven, why is
that? Old versions of Ghost would let you size / re-size the restore.
 Why doesn't CZ? ).

I powered down, and booted up with a live ISO on USB (Debian 8.1 Live),
fired up gparted, and looked at the partition table. I decided I could
steal 10GB from the swap partition. So, I delete the swap partition and
the root partition, then added them back in with the correct size. (When
CZ complained that the root file system partition was too small, it gave
me the exact size it used to be, which was very helpful here). Then, I
created a swap partition with the remaining space.

Now, restoring /dev/sda2 worked without issue. But we still weren't
home-free. The restore worked, and the system booted, but it immediately
went into emergency mode because Dependency failed for local file
 system - among other things.

I figured it couldn't find the swap partition since I killed the one
 created at install time.

So, via rescue mode, I checked /etc/fstab and compaired the UUIDs there
with blkid, and sure enough (as I suspected) the swap partition UUID was
different since I had stolen space from the originally installed one.
When I deleted it and created a new one, it got a new UUID (as it should
have). So, I just changed the UUID value for the swap partition, saved,
 and rebooted.

The system came up without issue, and 5 minutes later, I was writing
this email to thank Steven for Clonezilla and put this out there for
anyone else Googling around on how to fix a broken system.

  * Translations. I might want to add one, if my spare time permits it.
  * Features. I'd like to add a few features to ocs-sr, if the

they are going to be dismissed anyway.
  * Code. To add features, code needs to be checked out and patches
have to be made (or new code submitted).

The points above raise the following questions:

  * Features. How does someone reach the team with commits rights to

Just post patches on this mailing list. Or of course you can have a

  * Code. Where can I find the version control system with the most

Since tinc is such a small package, and it's available on Debian
repository. We will add that in the next testing release.

 Basic steps:

 1. Run editCZCDsquashfs.sh
 (http://drbl.org/faq/2_System/files/editCZCDsquashfs.txt)
 2. In another terminal, chroot /tmp/clonezillan/live/squashfs-root
 3. apt-get update
 4. apt-get install vim
 5. Setup eth0 to get dhcp:

 auto eth0
 allow-hotplug eth0
 iface eth0 inet dhcp

 6. apt-get install tinc
 7. Configure tinc:
 8. Ensure the tun driver is loaded: add 'tun' to /etc/modules on its
 own line.
 9. apt-get install chkconfig
 10. Make sure that ssh starts on boot: 'chkconfig ssh on'
 11. Ctrl+D to exit chroot
 12. Backup what you just did:
 cd /tmp/
 tar -zcvf myclonezilla.tar.gz clonezillan/
 13. Return to the terminal that ran the script in #1, and 'exit'

I'll probably publish this on github for any future searchers

 1. Compile tinc for clonezilla
 2. Set tinc to run at boot (so it connects to our service vpn)
 3. Set dhcp to start automatically.
 4. Set ssh to start and run automatically.

 Here's why:

Users cannot follow directions, and getting them to boot, start
dhcp, and do a reverse SSH connection so I can restore their drives
is painstakingly difficult. However, if the Clonezilla disc can
start DHCP and get an address, then connect to our VPN (uses
/dev/tun), and I can then connect to them directly, my instructions
are reduced to: put this disc in the computer and reboot.

I am fairly sure 3 4 can be accomplished with the OCS script
 mentioned here
 http://clonezilla.org/advanced/customized-clonezilla-live.php, but
what about 1 2? Is GCC in the image? If it's like Knoppix, I'll
need to install lzo's dev package. Then... how do I remaster it?

Re: [Clonezilla-live] Issues with automated restore

2015-05-10 Thread Steven Shiau
Hi Shayan,
So on github you have mentioned the issue has been fixed?
Or you still have problem for that?
Thanks.

Steven.

 Hi,

I'm trying to make an automated restore clonezilla live, and I've been
 having some issues.
One would be is it possible to make it completely unattended? I've
tried noprompt noprompt but still it asks user to say yes to erase
 the data on the disk.
but the major issue is this :
 https://github.com/stevenshiau/clonezilla/issues/5

while making an unattended restore, after restoring the partition,
 I encounter this error message:

 |Updating the boot entry 5 by command:
 efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sda -p -L
 HD(6,1657BLAHBLAH)File(\EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi) -l
 \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi

Could not prepare boot variable: Invalid argument

 ***
Setting network boot in the 1st order of uEFI NVRAM...

 |

and it gets stuck here! if I do a reboot it would not
recognize the hard drive any more so nothing boots.

However on one try I CTRL+C ed there and went on the command-line
mode, I did try the same command (with sudo, otherwise permission
error), it gave me the same error and when I removed -L
 HD(6,1657BLAHBLAH)File(\EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi) -l
\EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi that are just the labels and names, it
worked and the system was able to boot up from the restored image.

so I narrowed down the issue, i guess it's somewhere

 here:https://github.com/stevenshiau/clonezilla/blob/a80ae5a477c1e124ee87771d0a6f3551ff095efe/sbin/update-efi-nvram-boot-entry#L409

Is there any boot variables to disable what is happening here? or
 any other workarounds?

 Thanks,
 Shayan
