not Courier - I love Courier, and I am testing that latest version.

ftp://oss.sgi.com/projects/fam/download/stable

fam-2.7.0.tar.gz 295KB 26/11/2003

AFIWA I asked a genuine question, I'd appreciate not being insulted.

On RHAS4, at any rate (and therefore likely all FCs), FAM has been
replaced by gam_serv, which does what FAM did, but on a per user basis.
There's a short description of why RH went from FAM in
/usr/share/doc/gamin or whatever.

Courier IMAP needs either, as documented, if you need real time updates
on folders accessed real time by more than one client - or one client
with simultaneous connections. You can build without, but then with
reduced effect.

On this list, in the past, there's been much criticism of FAM, apart
from other things of it not working as expected (advertised). It always
worked for me, before Gamin.

Come on now, laugh out loud like the rest of us. Sam gave you Courier,
what more do you want? There's nothing in his version of your GPL that
says you shouldn't expect wisecracks. If he'd said it with a smile over
a beer, you'd have let it pass like water off a duck's back.

Does Courier pick this up automatically if on a Redhat system, or do you
have to add any extra compile options? If this is the case, how can I
check or test that it has used it properly? And does Gamin need any
configuring to set up?

I would, if I'd have been wrong, but I don't appreciate being humiliated
over something I was right about, when Sam clearly hadn't read my e-mail
properly, as even in his reply, he left the bit about me saying it was a
turn-off of FAM, not Courier.

Sorry, but if you're going to make wisecracks, you should at least get
your facts correct.

It picks it up automatically, since /usr/lib/libfam.so still exists,
albeit modified and linked to ...

If Courier IMAP builds out of the box then it's found libfam.so, or
you have to configure it without libfam.

None.

When I was young I lived in London, worked, as a toffee nose, with
cockneys - I then moved to Bergen (Bergensere are just as bad as
cockneys) in Norway and survived, stayed in Norway for 13 years then
moved to Amsterdam (Amsterdammers are just as bad as Bergensere). If I'd
have taken notice of all the all the insults hurled at me over the years
I'd have gone gaga long ago.

Where can I get Gamin?

You should use your distro packages. But if your distro doesn't have
it, try http://www.gnome.org/~veillard/gamin/
Is it production-quality/proven/reliable?

It's been in RedHat's Enterprise Linux since 4.0 was released so in
their mind at least it is.
What are the recommendations over the Fam/Gamin choice?

I had issues with FAM on Maildir's with 5000+ messages. The fam process
would shoot up to 99% CPU and do nothing until I killed it manually.
Switching to Gamin was a little better but it still had some issues.
Seems both Fam and Gamin use dnotify if it's all that's available in the
kernel. However, Gamin can and will use inotify if you're using a
recent kernel (2.6.13+?) with inotify compiled in. Gamin+inotify were
the magic combo for me. I still found issues with Maildirs with 1+
messages, but instead of chewing up the CPU, Gamin would just fail to
provide realtime updates in IDLE mode, not a big deal for me.

Does Courier IMAP build successfully using Gamin instead of Fam?

Like Tony said, it will use the fam.h from whatever it finds. Older
versions of Gamin weren't quite 100% API compatabile with FAM so they
had issues. But Gamin has been in Fedora since FC3 or so and is quite
well tested (I believe Sam, the main Courier developer uses a recent
version of Fedora for devel.)

Having said all this, if you're on FreeBSD or another Unix I have no
idea what Gamin's support is like. I believe the head Gamin devel. is a
RedHat employee so most of the testing is done on Linux, not even sure
it's compilable on other Unixen.
