Exclusive to American Free Press By Christopher Bollyn While an Israeli real estate magnate from Australia insured his 99-year lease on the retail space of the World Trade Center against terrorism, one of Israel's biggest companies pulled out of the north tower just days before Sept. 11. AFP has learned from a reliable source in the shipping industry that Zim American Israeli Shipping Co., Inc. broke the lease when it vacated the rented offices on the 16th and 17th floors of the north tower of the World Trade Center shortly before the Sept. 11 disaster. According to the source, Zim's WTC office space had been leased until the end of the year and the company lost $50,000 when it suddenly pulled out in the beginning of September. The parent company, Zim Israel Naviga tion Co., is nearly half-owned by the state of Israel, the other half held by Israel Corp. Zim is one of the world's largest container shipping companies, operating an international network of shipping lines. AFP repeatedly contacted Zim American Israeli Ship ping Co., Inc. at its new American headquarters in Norfolk, Va., to inquire about the company's pulling out of its WTC lease early. AFP was told that the only person who could discuss the matter was the company president, Shaul Cohen-Mintz, who was said to be unavailable until Dec. 4. AFP also contacted the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the original owner of the World Trade Center, and was told to contact Silverstein Properties, owner of the World Trade Center since July 24. Silverstein passes all media related questions to the public relations company of Howard J. Rubenstein, which also represents the state of Israel. Steve Solomon of Rubenstein told AFP that the company had no information on the leases and advised AFP to contact the tenant directly. Calls to Ezra Bentob of Zim's legal department were not returned. An Israeli businessman from Australia, Frank Lowy, had recently acquired the 99-year lease for the 425,000 square foot retail portion of World Trade Center before the WTC attacks of Sept. 11, reported The Jerusalem Post on Sept. 12. Lowy is chairman and founder of Westfield Holdings, and the manager of Westfield America Trust, which has a 57 percent stake in Westfield America Inc. In April 2001, Westfield America agreed to pay $400 million for the lease on the complex though only $133 million was paid; the rest was to be made in ground lease payments. Lowy is the second wealthiest man in Australia and was recently ranked as the 209th wealthiest man in the world by Forbes magazine. Westfield is the fourth-largest shopping mall owner, with operations in Austral ia, the United States, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Westfield was insured against terrorist attacks and its earnings will not be materially affected. In a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange the retail chain said that investment in the retail component of the World Trade Center is fully insured for both capital and loss of income, adding the insurance coverage includes acts of terrorism. No person or nation that commits terrorism against America should escape punishment. But now I will make a statement that may shock you. If you agree that those who commit terrorist acts against America should be punished, then America should also put Israel at the top of our hit list -- because Israel has committed deliberate acts of terrorism and treachery against the United States. I will also reveal strong evidence indicating that Israel is responsible for the terror attacks of September 11th. This article will show that Israel has committed more terrorism in the last half century than any other nation on earth. Increasing numbers of people are aware of the fact that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, Lebanese and other Mideastern people have suffered from Israeli invasion and terrorism. However, few people are aware of the deliberate acts of Israeli treachery and terror committed against the United States of America. I will prove this charge against Israel and expose the long-running treason against America that penetrates the highest echelons of the U.S. Government. Why was America attacked? No one would argue that whatever his motivations, if bin Laden was behind the horror of the WTC attacks, he deserves punishment for killing so many innocent people. At the same time, it is vital that we know why bin Laden and millions of others around the world have come to hate America. Why are so many willing to risk or even sacrifice their lives to get at us? I certainly hope no one reading this is so naïve as to believe that the growing millions who hate America do so because we are free. That canard has to be the most ridiculous idea sold to the American people since the pet rock. To end the threat of terrorism against the American people, we must know the true reason why we are so hated. Modern technology makes mass murder and terrorism so ridiculously easy that just about anyone can do it. It cannot be stopped by military might. In fact, even the brute force we are using in Afghanistan supposedly to wipe out terror -- already shows signs of whipping up enough world wide hatred against America to give rise to a thousand new terrorists for every one terrorist we might kill. Perhaps we should have enough courage to consider the possible reasons why so many millions of people hate us. Only when we have all the facts, rather than cute little clichés like They were attacking freedom, can we decide the best way to protect our people in the future. And, perhaps we should ask the media how they define an attack on American freedom? I would say that a real attack on freedom is trashing the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States. The Ten Amendments are the very core of what American freedom actually is. George Bush and the U.S. Congress, armed with the Orwellian U.S.A. Patriot Act, did infinitely more to take away our Constitutional freedoms than bin Laden ever could. The real reason we have suffered terrorism The real reason US has suffered the terrorism of the WTC attack is shockingly simple. Too many American politicians have betrayed the American people and their true interests by blindly supporting the leading terrorist nation on earth: Israel. The American mass media and the government cannot have it both ways. If they are motivated to attack Afghanistan for giving aid and comfort to terrorists, then some Palestinians naturally find motivation to attack America for giving aid and even military support to Israel, a nation that has committed unrelenting terrorism against them. Traitors to the United States have allowed a terrorist foreign nation to control the United States Government. Some readers might think it preposterous for me to assert that a foreign nation controls America. But, consider the fact that the former head of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee, William Fulbright, said precisely that. He asserted on ABC's Face the Nation television program that Israel Controls the United States Senate. And, Senator Fulbright was no dummy; it is in his name that the brightest students scramble after the so-named Fulbright scholarships. Senator Fulbright is not the only one to make this indictment; many other important members of the U.S. Government have made such charges. Here's what General George Brown said when he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: We can say we can't possibly get the Congress to support a (Israeli) program like this. And they say don't worry about the Congress. We will take care of the Congress. This is somebody from another country, but they can do it. All-night vigils were held by protesters describing the building as a fat cats' cathedral and by others critical of the church's handling of the sex scandals engulfing it. The dedication of the cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels comes at an awkward moment for the church. Seventy-two current or former priests from the LA diocese alone are under criminal investigation and the church is embroiled in costly settlements with abuse victims. The city's Catholic archbishop, Cardinal Roger Mahony, has been widely attacked for not acting more speedily. We think it is totally inappropriate to spend $200m on a building like this, said Catherine Morris of Catholic Worker, which has been working with the poor in LA since 1970. The protesters claim that the cost of building has led to cuts in church social programmes. The cathedral is situated in LA's civic, business and entertainment centre, close to what is possibly the largest Skid Row in the US, with around 4,000 people, many mentally ill, sleeping on the streets. The city and the church have been accused of ignoring them and the thousands of others who live in homeless hostels in the area. Ms Morris said there were nearly 300 other churches in the archdiocese which could have been converted into a cathedral and the $195m thus saved could have been spent in more productive ways. She added: We have layers and layers of poverty in this country and layers and layers of poverty in this city that could have been addressed. There are so many needs. It is unconscionable to make a spectacle out of the spending of money on a building. The cathedral is being built in the part of the city associated with government, business and culture but the church's founder, Jesus, lived in the margins. Alice Callaghan, of Las Familias del Pueblo, which works with the homeless, agreed. They are spending $200m on the cathedral but how much on God's poor? In response to the criticism, they have hired one nun - one nun - to do outreach. It's ludicrous ... I think it's very appropriate that they have built it in the entertainment district. The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests also attacked the lavish nature of the opening ceremony which was attended by 3,000 guests. Money for the cathedral has been raised with the help of high-profile donors including Rupert Murdoch, who gave $10m, Bob Hope and Roy Disney. Money will also be raised by selling resting places in the crypts for $50,000 each. Cardinal Mahony said yesterday that he hoped the cathedral would be the new people's church, representing a new beginning that would outlast scandals. Designed by the modernist Spanish architect Jose Rafael Moneo, the new cathedral has taken five years to build. The previous cathedral was damaged by the 1994 earthquake. Visually, the new building has won some plaudits. The 25-tonne bronze doors and the sculpture of Mary above them have been widely praised. But some critics have nicknamed the building the yellow armadillo. The sources said several shipments of boxes of gold, usually disguised as other products, were taken by small boat from the Pakistani port of Karachi to either Iran or Dubai, and from there mixed with other goods and flown by chartered airplanes to Khartoum, the Sudanese capital. Although it is not clear how much gold has been moved, U.S. and European officials said the quantity was significant and was an important indicator that the al Qaeda network and members of Afghanistan's deposed Taliban militia still had access to large financial reserves. European and U.S. intelligence officials said the movement of gold also highlighted three significant developments in the war on terrorism: the growing role of Iranian intelligence units allied with the country's hard-line clerics in protecting and aiding al Qaeda; the potential reemergence of Sudan as a financial center for the organization; and the ability of the terrorist group to generate new sources of revenue despite the global crackdown on its finances. The sources said Sudan may have been chosen because Osama bin Laden, the Saudi-born al Qaeda leader, and other members of the network are familiar with the country and retain business contacts there. They said traditional havens for al Qaeda money on the Arabian peninsula such as Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates were under intense international scrutiny, while transactions in Sudan could more easily pass unnoticed. Gold has for years been the preferred financial instrument of the Taliban and al Qaeda. Most of the Taliban treasury was kept in gold when the militia ruled Afghanistan, and taxes were often collected in gold. Just before the Taliban and al Qaeda were driven from Afghanistan last year, the two groups shipped large amounts of gold to Dubai, and from there to other safe havens, according to U.S., European and Arab officials. Senior U.S. intelligence officials said they are investigating the information about the new gold shipments and had opened a case on the matter but had no further comment. We know they are looking at new sources of revenue and are finding new ways to raise and move funds to where they are accessible, a U.S. official said. The bankers are the ones that move the money and the bankers are not sitting in caves in Afghanistan. European and U.S. sources said they became aware of the shipments after they occurred, and have asked the Sudanese government to take measures to halt the flow. A spokesman for the Sudanese Embassy in Washington said he had no official information about the shipments and found the information hard to believe. Sudan is not going to allow anything like this to come in knowingly, the official said. We are concerned about terrorism. We are on a high level of alert since September 11. But European intelligence sources said one of the hubs of bin Laden's organization continues to be Sudan, where he lived from 1991 to 1996, when he was forced to move to Afghanistan. Although the United States and other countries have praised Sudan for its cooperation in the war on terrorism, European and U.S. officials say that bin Laden, who invested tens of millions of dollars in the country when it harbored him, continues to have economic interests there. While living in Sudan, bin Laden operated a large construction business, bought extensive land holdings and helped found a bank. A senior European intelligence official said there was growing evidence that Khartoum was again serving as a sort of hub for al Qaeda business transactions. He has banking contacts there, he has business contacts there and he is intimately familiar with the political and intelligence structure there, the official said. He never fully left Sudan despite moving to Afghanistan. The gold appears to be the fruit of what one Pakistani businessman knowledgeable of Taliban financing called a commodity for commodity exchange, with the Taliban and al Qaeda trading opium and heroin for gold. When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, according to Pakistani intelligence officials, it actively engaged in opium and heroin production, and allowed al Qaeda to raise funds through taxing the cultivation of poppy, the raw material for heroin. The talk is about strategy and tactics, geopolitics and personalities. It is about air war and ground war, weapons of mass destruction, arms inspections, alliances, oil, and regime change. What is missing is what an American war on Iraq will do to tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of ordinary human beings who are not concerned with geopolitics and military strategy, and who just want their children to live, to grow up. They are not concerned with national security but with personal security, with food and shelter and medical care and peace. I am speaking of those Iraqis and those Americans who will, with absolute certainty, die in such a war, or lose arms or legs, or be blinded. Or they will be stricken with some strange and agonizing sickness that could lead to their bringing deformed children into the world (as happened to families in Vietnam, Iraq, and also the United States). True, there has been some discussion of American casualties resulting from a land invasion of Iraq. But, as always when the strategists discuss this, the question is not about the wounded and dead as human beings, but about what number of American casualties would result in public withdrawal of support for the war, and what effect this would have on the upcoming elections for Congress and the Presidency. That was uppermost in the mind of Lyndon Johnson, as we have learned from the tapes of his White House conversations. He worried about Americans dying if he escalated the war in Vietnam, but what most concerned him was his political future. If we pull out of Vietnam, he told his friend Senator Richard Russell, they'll impeach me, won't they? In any case, American soldiers killed in war are always a matter of statistics. Individual human beings are missing in the numbers. It is left to the poets and novelists to take us by the shoulders and shake us and ask us to look and listen. In World War I, ten million men died on the battlefield, but we needed John Dos Passos to confront us with what that meant: In his novel 1919, he writes of the death of John Doe: In the tarpaper morgue at Chalons-sur-Marne in the reek of chloride of lime and the dead, they picked out the pine box that held all that was left of John Doe, the scraps of dried viscera and skin bundled in khaki. Vietnam was a war that filled our heads with statistics, of which one stood out, embedded in the stark monument in Washington: 58,000 dead. But one would have to read the letters from soldiers just before they died to turn those statistics into human beings. And for all those not dead but mutilated in some way, the amputees and paraplegics, one would have to read Ron Kovic's account, in his memoir, Born on the Fourth of July, of how his spine was shattered and his life transformed. As for the dead among the enemy--that is, those young men, conscripted or cajoled or persuaded to pit their bodies against those of our young men--that has not been a concern of our political leaders, our generals, our newspapers and magazines, our television networks. To this day, most Americans have no idea, or only the vaguest, of how many Vietnamese--soldiers and civilians (actually, a million of each)--died under American bombs and shells. And for those who know the figures, the men, women, children behind the statistics remained unknown until a picture appeared of a Vietnamese girl running down a road, her skin shredding from napalm, until Americans saw photos of women and children huddled in a trench as GIs poured automatic rifle fire into their bodies. Ten years ago, in that first war against Iraq, our leaders were proud of the fact that there were only a few hundred American casualties (one wonders if the families of those soldiers would endorse the word only). When a reporter asked General Colin Powell if he knew how many Iraqis died in that war, he replied: That is really not a matter I am terribly interested in. A high Pentagon official told The Boston Globe, To tell you the truth, we're not really focusing on this question. Americans knew that this nation's casualties were few in the Gulf War, and a combination of government control of the press and the media's meek acceptance of that control ensured that the American people would not be confronted, as they had been in Vietnam, with Iraqi dead and dying. The Court has been given explosive new testimony that Robert Kennedy's assassin, Palestinian-born Sirhan Sirhan, was "programmed through hypnosis and brainwashed to carry out the crime". A new trial will seriously embarrass both the CIA and FBI - under increasing fire for the cover-up of their failure in last September's terror attacks. The most likely date for the trial would fall during President Bush's run-up to re-election. His own father was Congressman during the murder of Robert Kennedy and later became CIA director. Its files on the assassination have never been made public. Sirhan's attorney, Lawrence Teeter, a respected Civil Rights lawyer, has spent eight years gathering evidence which he described last week, "virtually proves that powerful branches of US government were behind the murder". In an exclusive interview at his office on fashionable Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, Teeter said: "When a powerful branch of government commits such a murder it only makes sense if top people are involved. In the case of the programming of Sirhan those involved, either directly or indirectly, are the Los Angeles police department, the FBI and the CIA together with the Pentagon. "There were good reasons for them to have wanted Robert Kennedy eliminated. He wanted to end the Vietnam war. He wanted to get to the bottom of his brother's assassination. He wanted to break the power of the Teamsters Union. He wanted to end the wild adventurism of the CIA", said Teeter. That "adventurism" included the notorious MK-ULTRA programme - designed by the CIA to see if it was feasible to use drugs and hypnosis to create a "programmed assassin". Among the doctors secretly involved in the work was Dr Louis West, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California in Los Angeles and director of its Neuropsychiatric Institute. West's work for the CIA included using hypnosis to try and programme minds. But his case files were shredded in the wake of Robert Kennedy's murder on June 5, 1968. Kennedy was in Los Angeles to gather votes for his nomination as the Democratic Candidate for President when he was killed. West died earlier this year before Teeter could question him. "That is very convenient for those who are trying to block the truth emerging", Teeter said. When legal advisers from the 15 European Union members meet tomorrow, they should take the lead in stopping this campaign by asking its member states to refuse bilateral agreements. Amnesty International's report concludes that any state that enters into an impunity agreement with the USA will violate its obligations under international law. The USA claim that the impunity agreements are in accordance with international law is wholly without merit. In fact, the agreements seek to manipulate provision included to ensure that people accused of these crimes are brought to justice. Background The Rome Statute of the ICC entered into force on 1 July 2002. As of 30 August 2002, 78 states had ratified it; 139 states have signed it. The ICC is in the process of being established to investigate and prosecute people accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, when national courts are unable or unwilling to do so. It is expected that it will become fully operational in the first half of 2003. The USA has been the only state actively to oppose the establishment of the ICC. Since the adoption of the Rome Statute in July 1998, the USA has sought an exemption for US nationals from the jurisdiction of the Court. Amnesty International, other NGOs and governments have repeatedly demonstrated that USA fears that the Court could be used for politically motivated prosecutions against USA nationals have no basis since the Rome Statute contains substantial safeguards and fair trial guarantees. Countries that have ratified the Rome Statute are obliged to comply with requests by the International Criminal Court to arrest and surrender persons accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. Signing an impunity agreement with the USA is contrary to a state's obligations under the Statute and goes against the very purpose of the Statute which is to end impunity for the worst crimes under international law. States that have signed the Rome Statute are obliged by international law not to take any steps that would undermine the Rome Statute. Signing an impunity agreement with the USA is clearly against the object and purpose of the Statute which is to end impunity for the worst crimes under international law. All states -- regardless of whether they have ratified, signed or not signed the Rome Statute -- that enter into impunity agreements with the USA or refuse to arrest and surrender persons accused by the ICC may violate their obligations under international law to bring to justice those responsible for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. From here, particularly when the traffic was going slow, you could always look over to your left and see the whole of lower Manhattan laid out in all its splendor. These days, one searches for the two gleaming towers that dominated the tip of the island. Surely it is a dream. Surely, this time they will be there. They are not. As September 11, 2002 approaches, I keep thinking we should build those same two towers again. I keep thinking of lunches and dinners in Windows on the World, the splendid restaurant that topped out one of the towers and, from which, walking the full perimeter of the floor, one could look out at the extraordinary urban landscape that is New York City and its boroughs, and across the river, New Jersey. Down below, one could see the Statue of Liberty, looking very tiny in the harbor. It makes me angry. It makes me angry to think that two planes, filled with innocent people, were turned into flying bombs that literally decimated these two great structures, these monuments to the economic vitality of this nation. I want those towers back! Forget about the new designs. They have already been dismissed and an international search is on for still more. I say, take out the architectural plans for the Twin Towers and rebuild them! Tell the crazed Islamists that they did not achieve anything and will not achieve anything. They have signed the death warrant for fanatical, fundamentalist Islam. Many years ago, I visited the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. I was a child when the Japanese sneak attack awoke a sleeping nation, an isolationist nation, to the reality that it had real enemies. Ironically, the boat I took to get out to the site was filled mostly with Japanese tourists. What struck me, once we got there, was that they would pause to pray in front of the names of those who died that day, December 7, 1941, 'a day that will live in infamy.' The Arizona Memorial is a place of silence broken only by the waters that lap at the twisted, rusting metal of the ship below and the beautiful arching structure above. I want the new Twin Towers to be a bustling, noisy place, filled with people coming and going. Most will have been born after 9-11 and perhaps some will pause to look at a wall filled with the names of the more than 2,800 who died there on a long ago day in 2001. I want the Towers back! Hidden among the farthest reaches of the mountains' pines, cypresses and brush, opium poppies, the raw material for heroin, has become a fast ticket to prosperity for the area's impoverished residents. Poppy fields have sprouted up "in most of the highlands of (the states of) Guerrero, Durango, Sinaloa, Chihuahua and Nayarit" in western Mexico, regional army commander Gen. Audomaro Martinez told reporters. The seedpod of the Papaver somniferum is the source of opium, as well as all its derivatives, namely heroin, morphine and codeine. Poppies are being planted throughout the region in tiny plots measuring less than 3,000 square meters (32,000 square feet) at altitudes of between 1,500-2,500 meters (4,900-8,200 feet), together with corn and marijuana to camouflage the blooms. The small poppy fields, which are tucked away in hard-to-reach areas amid difficult terrain, must be spotted by helicopter or plane and then reached by foot, since spraying from the air is not feasible. To destroy a small crop, anti-drug agents have to walk long distances along footpaths while bearing the equipment needed to kill the illegal crops. The army conducts 45-day poppy eradication campaigns every two months, with the help of 385 bases employed exclusively for that purpose. Another 450 bases work to prevent the crops from coming down the mountains and being distributed. This year alone, 106,698 poppy and 122,299 marijuana fields - spread over 17,852 hectares (44,000 acres) of land - have been destroyed. Authorities have also seized 45 kilos of heroin, 404 kilos of poppy pods, 35.3 kilos of opium gum and 342.4 tons of marijuana. Although Mexico plays a small role in the global opium market which is controlled primarily by Afghanistan, Burma, Laos and increasingly Colombia, the rapid proliferation of poppy fields here, as well as the increasing use of the extensive northern border to smuggle opium-based narcotics into the United States, have anti-drug authorities concerned. The majority of the world's opium poppies are grown in the dry, warm and narrow 4,500-mile stretch of mountains extending across southern Asia from Turkey through Pakistan and Laos. Seeds planted in July and August there yield poppies ready for harvest in December. But the temperate Sierra Madre Occidental climate in the southern state of Guerrero makes opium harvests possible year round, providing producers with a continual source of the raw material needed to make heroin. A hectare (2.5 acres) of poppies produces eight kilos of opium gum, which in turn can produce a kilo of heroin that can be sold for several thousand dollars, a virtual fortune for the area's farmers. About three months after the poppy seeds are planted, brightly colored flowers bloom. As the petals fall away, an egg-shaped seed pod is exposed which when cut open produces an opaque, milky sap that quickly turns black, dries and forms opium gum. Presidents are just assassinated! There is no conspiracy! Its just nec-essary for us barbarians to be able to make sense of the world! Whitewash, Smokescreen, Disinformation and Modified Limited Hang-out Recent Yale graduate, Alexandra Robbinss new book, Secrets of the Tomb Skull and Bones, The Ivy League, And The Hidden Paths of Power portends to be an exposé, but in reality is a response by Bones to its critics, an apologia and more skullduggery. Ms. Robbins, claims to be a member of one of Yales seven senior secret societies (she never reveals which one) writes: The rumors and conspiracy theories about Skull and Bones, are widespread and deep-rooted. the most fascinating thing I learned through my interviews with members of Skull and Bones is that the majority of rumors were carefully planted by the Bonesmen themselves. And, Skull Bones is at its core, equivalent to the Wizard of Oz, the puny but cunning man hidden behind a curtain of mystique, projecting images that inspire awe and terror in order to expand himself into something great and terrible. And, If the Wizard of Oz can represent Skull and Bones, then one must point out that, for a while, Oz needed its Wizard to provide balance and a constant current of reassurance. [emphasis in original] According to Ms. Robbins, The Order of Skull Bones is all just a façade and the conspiracy theories are created out of a psychological need of us barbarians. Its just a frat house that taps into the power of the Ivy League old boy network. Just a bonding thing, Skull and Bones isnt cultlike but its critics are. The Bonesmen cannot see the outside world without first looking through the Bones-constructed prism; at the same time, the outside world cannot see into Bones headquartersinstead, barbarians can only project their own imagery onto the, blank, brown walls of the tomb. Which they do. Often. At great length. The attention paid to Skull and Bones is cultlike, and it has grown exponentially in recent years because of the Bush dynasty and the expansion of the Internet, which has provided a most convenient medium through which to discuss and expound on conspiratorial ties. Skull and Bones is not a legend just to those who live it. To barbarians also, it is more than merely an institution; it is a concept onto which people project the images necessary for them to be able to make sense of the world. However sinister the notion of an all-powerful secret society might be, the existence of a Skull and Bones also brings us some measure of relief. The secret soci-ety allows us to believe that things dont just happen: genocide isnt just caused by one crazy individual, presidents arent just assassinated, family political dynasties arent just born. Even chaos, the societys con-spiracy theories tell us, has causality. The secret societylike the power of the elitist, old-school colleges, the small groups of mogul networks, and the political dynastiessurvives because people like to believe that seemingly random events are orchestrated by someone or something in control. Weve all done a good job of keeping the quintessential mystery alive, one patriarch said to me, because people dont believe this is all we do. Perhaps one of the reasons people are so fascinated with con-spiracy theories, particularly the far-reaching networks associated with secret societies and old-school power, is that they need causality in much the same way as they need a God. Peoples need for the Skull and Bones conspiracies to elucidate an underlying order is similar to the need for religion to explain death and purpose. Underground control suggests order and order implies reason. Explanations, however implausible, are somehow reassuring. The psychological underpinnings, the rhetoric and the techniques used to massage the message in this book I find very interesting. Also, her use of the term barbarians to refer to non-members and her use of Bones terms of deference to older members, I also find interesting. Ms. Robbins takes a swipe at the sinister views of Bones with an exaggerated and shunted version of many of the allegations about Bones in an introduction titled The Legends of Skull and Bones. By mixing reality with known myth Ms. Robbins clumsily tosses aside many historical tragedies brought about by the elite deviance of Bones and its cohorts. She then proceeds to tell us What follows, then is the truth about Skull and Bones. But by simply not addressing many of the allegations against Bones that she brings up in her legends she lays down more smoke and mirrors on the whole subject of what is real and what is fiction, even ending her book with more of the same: Whether the legend of Skull and Bones reflects a sinister veracity or a prismatic distortion depends almost entirely on

EU Energy Commissioner Margot Wallstrom said the initial response from countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean had been positive. Many developing countries had sided with the United States and Japan against including the targets in the summit's plan, arguing they were a rich country's luxury. After more than a week of tough bargaining, the agreed text includes a commitment to urgently increase the use of renewable energy sources but says cleaner use of fossil fuels is also acceptable. The text also urges countries to reform subsidies that favor industrialized countries or are harmful to the environment and commits to halving the 2 billion people living without proper sanitation by 2015. The plan emphasizes the need for good governance to achieve sustainable development but does not make it a condition for receiving aid as advocated by the United States, diplomats said. Ms. Robbins, claims to be a member of one of Yales seven senior secret societies (she never reveals which one) writes: The rumors and conspiracy theories about Skull and Bones are widespread and deep-rooted the most fascinating thing I learned through my interviews with members of Skull and Bones is that the majority of rumors were carefully planted by the Bonesmen themselves. And, Skull Bones is at its core, equivalent to the Wizard of Oz, the puny but cunning man hidden behind a curtain of mystique, projecting images that inspire awe and terror in order to expand himself into something great and terrible. And, If the Wizard of Oz can represent Skull and Bones, then one must point out that, for a while, Oz 'needed' its Wizard to provide balance and a constant current of reassurance. [Emphasis in original] According to Ms. Robbins, The Order of Skull Bones is all just a façade and the conspiracy theories are created out of a psychological need of us barbarians. Its just a frat house that taps into the power of the Ivy League old boy network. Just a bonding thing, Skull and Bones isnt cultlike but its critics are. The Bonesmen cannot see the outside world without first looking through the Bones-constructed prism; at the same time, the outside world cannot see into Bones headquartersinstead, barbarians can only project their own imagery onto the, blank, brown walls of the tomb. Which they do. Often. At great length. The attention paid to Skull and Bones is cultlike, and it has grown exponentially in recent years because of the Bush dynasty and the expansion of the Internet, which has provided a most convenient medium through which to discuss and expound on conspiratorial ties. Skull and Bones is not a legend just to those who live it. To barbarians also, it is more than merely an institution; it is a concept onto which people project the images necessary for them to be able to make sense of the world. However sinister the notion of an all-powerful secret society might be, the existence of a Skull and Bones also brings us some measure of relief. The secret soci-ety allows us to believe that things dont just happen: genocide isnt just caused by one crazy individual, presidents arent just assassinated, family political dynasties arent just born. Even chaos, the societys con-spiracy theories tell us, has causality. The secret societylike the power of the elitist, old-school colleges, the small groups of mogul networks, and the political dynastiessurvives because people like to believe that seemingly random events are orchestrated by someone or something in control. Weve all done a good job of keeping the quintessential mystery alive, one patriarch said to me, because people dont believe this is all we do. Perhaps one of the reasons people are so fascinated with con-spiracy theories, particularly the far-reaching networks associated with secret societies and old-school power, is that they need causality in much the same way as they need a God. Peoples need for the Skull and Bones conspiracies to elucidate an underlying order is similar to the need for religion to explain death and purpose. Underground control suggests order and order implies reason. Explanations, however implausible, are somehow reassuring. The psychological underpinnings, the rhetoric and the techniques used to massage the message in this book I find are very interesting. Also, her use of the term barbarians to refer to non-members and her use of Bones terms of deference to older members, I also find interesting. Ms. Robbins takes a swipe at the sinister views of Bones with an exaggerated and shunted version of many of the allegations about Bones in an introduction titled The Legends of Skull and Bones. By mixing reality with known myth Ms. Robbins clumsily tosses aside many historical tragedies brought about by the elite deviance of Bones and its cohorts. She then proceeds to tell us What follows, then is the truth about Skull and Bones. But by simply not addressing many of the allegations against Bones that she brings up in her legends she lays down more smoke and mirrors on the whole subject of what is real and what is fiction, even ending her book with more of the same: Whether the legend of Skull and

You donât start walking down a path, even timidly, that could lead to an abridgement of the Bill of Rights, because each step can take you toward a blanket denial of freedom. What starts out as a seemingly rational course of action can, later on, show its ugly fascist face in full bloom. Take Attorney General Ashcroftâs decision to institute prison camps for âenemy combatants.â Sounds reasonable. If people are plotting against America in a time of war, they should be detained. And if these people are American citizens, so what? They are traitors. They should be held by the authorities. Ashcroft has declared that such American prisoners can be jailed without specific charges being leveled against them, without the right to an attorney, without the right to communicate to anyone, INDEFINITELY. Of course, he, Ashcroft, or Bush, can decide who is an âenemy combatant.â Well, we say, Ashcroft wonât just order the arrest of Joe Smith who lives in Ohio, has a family, and runs a dry cleaning shop. Ashcroft will only order the arrest of a man with a funny-sounding name who has converted to Islam. Yes, well, even if that is true, Ashcroft has taken the first steps down the path to perdition. And three years or five years from now, there may be a Joe Smith in Ohio who DOES find himself behind bars without a lawyer, because he showed up at an anti-war rally. Itâs the gradual erosion of the Bill of Rights. Step by step. Which is why there are laws against the detention of an American citizen, unless charges are filed, unless that citizen has the right to an attorney and a trial. The point is NOT whether you happen to think Ashcroft looks like a reasonable man. âReasonable lookingâ is not part of the law. If tomorrow a reasonable looking scientist appears on a national news program, and if he says that a new genetic marker has been found that can predict future criminal behavior, then you might think, âLetâs test everybody and isolate all possible criminals.â Children often think this way. They see what seems to be a solution, and they fall in love with it. They think Utopia is just over the horizon. But we are not children. We have the wisdom of experience. We know what some people are capable of, even if they pretty much comb their hair the way we do, even if they wear the same suits other people wear, even if they smile the way others do, even if they âlook like loyal Americans.â Children confuse protection with freedom. If states pass laws that say everyone must take vaccines as prevention against biowar plagues, children might think this is a good idea. Children might even snitch on their parents if their parents refuse to allow all the vaccines designed for kiddies. Children also tend to like uniforms. They might want to don black uniforms with insignias and march down the street in support of âthe national effort against terrorism.â But we are not children. Although the terror attacks of September 11 were clearly criminal acts of mass murder, no effort was made to preserve the integrity of the crime scenes and the essential evidence was disposed of like garbage. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was made a Knight of the British Empire - after he hired two large British construction management firms - both headed by Knights of the British Empire, to oversee what many experts consider to be massive criminal destruction of evidence. DESTRUCTION OF EVIDENCE The editor-in-chief of Fire Engineering magazine, William A. Manning, issued an urgent call to action to America s firefighters at the end of 2001, calling for a forensic investigation and demanding that the steel from the site be preserved to allow investigators to determine what caused the collapse. The destruction and removal of evidence must stop immediately, Manning wrote. Such destruction of evidence, he said, shows the astounding ignorance of government officials to the value of a thorough, scientific investigation of the largest fire-induced collapse in world history. For more than three months, structural steel from the World Trade Center has been and continues to be cut up and sold for scrap. Crucial evidence that could answer many questions about high-rise building design practices and performance under fire conditions is on the slow boat to China, Manning says, perhaps never to be seen again in America until you buy your next car. I have combed through our national standard for fire investigation, NFPA 921, but nowhere does one find an exemption allowing the destruction of evidence for buildings over 10 stories tall, Manning said. Clearly, there are burning questions that need answers. Based on the incident's magnitude alone, a full-throttle, fully resourced, forensic investigation is imperative. Three months later, the Science Committee of the House of Representatives reported that the WTC investigation was hampered by the destruction of crucial evidence. The committee report of March 6, 2002 says, Some of the critical pieces of steel were gone before the first [investigator] ever reached the site. The investigation Manning called for never happened, and never will, because the essential evidence is now destroyed: Valuable evidence has been lost irretrievably, Chairman of the Science Committee, Sherwood L. Boehlert (R-NY) said. The [FEMA-sponsored] building performance assessment currently being conducted of the World Trade Center is just that: an assessment, not an investigation, Prof. Glenn Corbett of John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City told the Science Committee in March. Corbett had previously called the FEMA-led investigation uncoordinated and superficial. The World Trade Center disaster demands the most comprehensive detailed investigation possible. No event in our entire fire service history has ever come close to the magnitude of this incident, Corbett wrote in the January 2002 issue of Fire Engineering. You would think we would have the largest fire investigation in world history. You would be wrong, he wrote, We are literally treating the steel removed from the site like garbage, not like crucial fire scene evidence. WHO'S IN CHARGE? The New York Times was unable to find out who was behind the destruction of evidence. On Dec. 25, 2001, the Times reported, Officials in the mayor s office declined to reply to written and oral requests for comment over a three-day period about who decided to recycle the steel and the concern that the decision might be handicapping the investigation. I must say that the current investigation, some would argue that review is the more appropriate word, seems to be shrouded in excessive secrecy, Chairman Boehlert said. There are no clear lines of authority, he said, No one is in charge. Before the dust had settled on September 11, the mayor of New York City, Rudolph Giuliani, and Kenneth Holden of the city s Dept. of Design and Construction (DDC), contracted 4 major construction management companies to begin the removal of the debris from the World Trade Center. Three of the four major companies involved in the clean-up are foreign owned: AMEC, Bovis Lend Lease, both headquartered in London; and Turner, a subsidiary of Germany's Hochtief. Only Tully Construction of Flushing, New York, is a truly American-owned company. Peter Tully, president of the company, was, notably, the only person willing to speak openly with AFP about his work at the WTC site. With the stroke of a pen, President Kennedy declared that the privately owned Federal Reserve Bank would soon be out of business. The Christian Law Fellowship has exhaustively researched this matter through the Federal Register and Library of Congress. We can now safely conclude that this Executive Order has never been repealed, amended, or superceded by any subsequent Executive Order. In simple terms, it is still valid. When President John Fitzgerald Kennedy - the author of Profiles in Courage - signed this Order, it returned to the federal government, specifically the Treasury Department, the Constitutional power to create and issue currency - money - without going through the privately owned Federal Reserve Bank. President Kennedy's Executive Order 0 [the full text is displayed further below] gave the Treasury Department the explicit authority: "to issue silver certificates against any silver bullion, silver, or standard silver dollars in the Treasury." This means that for every ounce of silver in the U.S. Treasury's vault, the government could introduce new money into circulation based on the silver bullion physically held there. As a result, more than $4 billion in United States Notes were brought into circulation in $2 and $5 denominations. $10 and $20 United States Notes were never circulated but were being printed by the Treasury Department when Kennedy was assassinated. It appears obvious that President Kennedy knew the Federal Reserve Notes being used as the purported legal currency were contrary to the Constitution of the united States of America. United States Notes" were issued as an interest-free and debt-free currency backed by silver reserves in the U.S. Treasury. We compared a "Federal Reserve Note" issued from the private central bank of the United States (the Federal Reserve Bank a/k/a Federal Reserve System), with a "United States Note" from the U.S. Treasury issued by President Kennedy's Executive Order. They almost look alike, except one says "Federal Reserve Note" on the top while the other says "United States Note". Also, the Federal Reserve Note has a green seal and serial number while the United States Note has a red seal and serial number. President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 and the United States Notes he had issued were immediately taken out of circulation. Federal Reserve Notes continued to serve as the legal currency of the nation. According to the United States Secret Service, 99% of all U.S. paper "currency" circulating in 1999 are Federal Reserve Notes. Kennedy knew that if the silver-backed United States Notes were widely circulated, they would have eliminated the demand for Federal Reserve Notes. This is a very simple matter of economics. The USN was backed by silver and the FRN was not backed by anything of intrinsic value. Executive Order 0 should have prevented the national debt from reaching its current level (virtually all of the nearly $9 trillion in federal debt has been created since 1963) if LBJ or any subsequent President were to enforce it. It would have almost immediately given the U.S. Government the ability to repay its debt without going to the private Federal Reserve Banks and being charged interest to create new "money". Executive Order 0 gave the U.S.A. the ability to, once again, create its own money backed by silver and realm value worth something. Again, according to our own research, just five months after Kennedy was assassinated, no more of the Series 1958 "Silver Certificates" were issued either, and they were subsequently removed from circulation. Perhaps the assassination of JFK was a warning to all future presidents not to interfere with the private Federal Reserve's control over the creation of money. It seems very apparent that President Kennedy challenged the "powers that exist behind U.S. and world finance". With true patriotic courage, JFK boldly faced the two most successful vehicles that have ever been used to drive up debt: 1) war (Viet Nam); and, 2) the creation of money by a privately owned central bank. Red headbands highlighted by Phanzsi NEPAD, phanzsi! (down to the New Partnerships for Africas Development a neoliberal plan to entrench Africa more deeply in the corporate-led global economy). Red t-shirts by the Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF), symbolised with a fist for justice emerging from the continent of Africa. Red t-shirts by the Landless Peoples Movement (LPM) calling for land, food and jobs for the roughly one-half of South Africas population who are landless. The march, by far the larger and more radical of the two on August 31, opposed the World Summit for Sustainable Development rather than trying to influence it. It lasted four hours in a winding route from the impoverished township of Alexandra to Sandton where the summit is taking place. The contrast between the two areas makes it seem as though they belong to separate universes, rather than being part of the same quadrant of Johannesburg. One dominated by tiny tin shacks separated by laneways only a metre or two wide the other with plush shopping malls, towering hotels and luxury cars. Despite its simplicity, this contrast made it difficult not to join in on the shout stop the war on the poor, make the rich pay! A collective of grass-roots movements organised the rally under the umbrella of the Social Movements Indaba (SMI). Including the APF, LPM, Jubilee South Africa, the Rural Development Services Network and the Environmental Justice Networking Forum, the collective split off from more mainstream non-government organisations earlier this year in the process of organizing the civil society presence at the WSSD (named the Global Forum). The SMI believed that the Global Forum was being co-opted by the South African government, deciding to take a stance against the WSSD rather than legitimizing what was seen as a means to only further impoverish the poor to corporate rule. As in Durban last year in KwaZulu-Natal Province, when 20,000 protestors marched to delegitimise the farce of the World Conference Against Racism, the rally demonstrated the rising anger in South Africa that the end of apartheid has not seen better conditions for the poor. The rally was joined by hundreds of overseas activists representing a diverse range of issues, from the protection of the rights of small-scale fisherfolk to the survival of indigenous cultures. Numerous banners expressed disgust with corporate-led globalisation and with Washingtons arrogance and imperialist outreach throughout the world. While this international solidarity threaded through the long march that stretched for at least a kilometre from front to end, it was largely a rally for basic justice in South Africa. Thousands of South Africans came from numerous impoverished townships, complete with large banners against water privatization, forced evictions, electricity cut-offs and capitalism. Young socialists danced and sung alongside grandmothers and old men. Cries of Amandla! (power) were belched over the speakerphones from the two leading trucks, from which participants roared in reply Ngawethu! (to the people!). Despite being flanked by dozens of tanks, armoured personnel carriers and thousands of rifle-carrying police, and buzzed by helicopters overhead, the march saw no repeat of the police violence of the week before where candle-holding, singing demonstrators were met with concussion grenades that injured three people. Fortunately, the government reversed its decision to refuse permission for the march, under pressure that such refusal would resemble the apartheid era crackdowns on any signs of dissent. For the thousands of poor who took to the streets, little has indeed changed since the 1994 elections that swept the ANC into power. For part of the long march I had the privilege to stride along aside Joyce, one of many elderly women who participated. Joyce ran out of food three days ago, and survives on assistance from a non-government organization. Her son died of AIDS at the age of eight, when she was unable to afford the anti-retroviral medication that could have prolonged his life. Im here fighting for freedom. We have no freedom now. Bush has masqueraded as a conservative while actually advancing a liberal agenda. When Bill Clinton boasted that the era of big government is over, there were probably more belly laughs than nods. After all, Clinton was widely recognized as a big-spending liberal. He was seen by many as a dangerous demagogue with an insatiable appetite for power, an appetite that might have consumed our liberties if not for public and congressional resistance. But with the election of supposed conservative George W. Bush, the public vigilance that helped keep Bill Clintons lust for power in check appears to have waned. Many Republicans and conservatives who were quick to challenge President Clintons every power grab fail to recognize the hypocrisy when President George W. Bush challenges Congress, as he did with a straight face during a radio address on August 17th, to show spending restraint lest the president enforce spending restraint. Promising that his administration will spend what is truly needed, and not a dollar more, Mr. Bush zeroed in on the Senate for ignoring fiscal discipline: I requested $2.4 billion for public housing; the bill moving through the Senate includes $300 million more. I requested $2.2 billion for agricultural research; again, the Senate wants to spend $300 million more. But such statements beg the question: Why is George W. Bush requesting billions of dollars for unconstitutional welfare stat e activities in the first place? How can an allegedly conservative president be so free with the taxpayers money? Unfortunately, although Bush enjoys the reputation of a conservative, his own record shows that he is a liberal. In fact, his liberalism may be more dangerous than that of his immediate predecessor. Bill Clinton, a lifelong Democrat with a far-left pedigree, often provoked resistance from congressional Republicans and conservatives in general. Yet Republican congressmen who refused to support Clintons liberal policies have willingly supported similar policies when offered by fellow Republican George W. Bush. Consequently, Bush has been more effective than his predecessor, in many ways, in advancing Clintonian liberalism. Bushs Bloated Budget A month after becoming president, Mr. Bush explained in a press conference (February 22, 2001) that his budget would reduce the rate at which spending is increasing but without cutting spending in the absolute sense. Were going to slow the rate of growth of the budget down, he said at the time. It should come to [sic] no surprise to anybody that my budget is going to say loud and clear that the rate of growth of the budget, for example, from last year, was excessive. And so well be slowing the rate of growth of the budget down. Bush, in other words, didnt promise to shrink the size of government, but merely to slow the rate of big-government expansion to put the brakes on the car speeding towards the precipice, but not to stop it, much less change its direction. But in the end, Bush didnt even put on the brakes, but hit the accelerator instead. In the budget he submitted in April 2001, Bush proposed spending $1,961 billion in fiscal 2002 as compared to an estimated $1,856 billion in 2001 a 5.7 percent increase. That, of course, was before September 11th. In a midterm budget summary released in July, the Bush administration estimated fiscal 2002 spending at a whopping $2,032 billion as compared to actual fiscal 2001 spending of $1,864 a nine percent increase. The July budget document also proposed spending $2,138 billion in fiscal 2003, a 5.2 percent increase over 2002. During the Clinton presidency, the rate of increase in the federal budget from one year to the next never exceeded 5.1 percent (1 999 to 2000), and it was as low as 2.6 percent (1996 to 1997). The bottom line: Federal spending is increasing at a faster rate with George W. Bush in the White House than it did with Bill Clinton in the White House. Presidential bookends: Publication of these two presidential portraits prompted very different reader reactions. While the January 18, 1999 cover shot of Bill Clinton didnt raise a stir, some Republican readers expressed outrage over the nearly identical picture of President Bush featured on the August 13, 2001 issue. But the similarities between the Clinton and George W. Bush presidencies are much more than skin deep. Other budget trends also make the Clinton era appear more fiscally conservative by comparison. In our opinion central banks have given JPM lease agreements whereby JPM receives physical bullion by paying three-quarters of a percent annual interest. JPM and/or its clients are free to use or sell this gold however they want. JPM or its clients appear to have used this gold to sell violently at key technical points -- $312.50 to $314.80 (today) and $315 and $329.50-$330, thereby depressing the gold price. 3. Moody's credit rating service recently downgraded Morgan/Chase. Then Standard Poor's rating service downgraded Morgan/Chase based on specific derivative positions. 4. The total derivative positions of Morgan/Chase can be found at the U.S. Office of the Controller of the Currency. The Controller of the Currency reports to the International Monetary Fund, which shares its data with the Bank for International Settlements. 5. So the positions carried by Morgan/Chase are public, but the public has no real idea on where to find the data. 6. The total of all derivatives on the books of Morgan/Chase on all underlying assets is $74 trillion. Yes, $74 trillion. 7. The size of the gold derivatives on Morgans/Chase's books is $46 billion to $60 billion, depending on valuation methods. Yes, $46 billion to $60 billion. 8. All gold derivative dealers use risk- control programs to manage their gold positions. These programs maintain the risk of the gold derivative to the dealers at the degree chosen by the trading management at the inception of the transactions. 9. All the gold derivatives on the books of Morgan/Chase are short spreads -- short of gold. If they were not short spreads, Morgan/Chase would be extraordinarily PLEASED by the rise in the gold price and bullish about gold. 10. The total of the international position of short spread gold derivatives is $300 billion, according to IMF and BIS reports. If you convert $300 billion into ounces of gold at the present price, you get more than 900 million ounces. 11. When the gold price hit $305, it triggered the risk-control programs of gold dealers to buy gold to maintain the risk exposure of the gold derivative short spreads for the dealer cabal/cartel, of which, in our opinion, Morgan/Chase is the major if not the main player. As gold, with the help of the cartel, dropped from the high $320s, the risk-control programs triggered selling of gold for the same reason. At $302-$305, risk- control programs returned to neutral. Now you can clearly understand the action of the gold market. 12. If gold closes above $330, the risk- control programs of gold dealers will start to demand that for each ounce of gold sold short in the short gold spreads, the dealers must own long about .623 ounces of gold. 13. At a gold price close at/or above $354, the gold dealer cartel's risk-control programs will call for approximately .986 ounces of gold long for each ounce short on the gold derivative short spreads. 14. That would be practically a 1-to-1 ratio, one ounce short to one ounce long required to maintain solvency under risk-control programs at $354 gold. 15. The demand in gold ounces that would be created among commercial banks, gold banks, and gold dealers under risk-control programs by a gold price at or above $354 would be about 886,325,000 ounces. Water works plagued by poor service and underinvestment can be rejuvenated by private water operators. That according to the World Bank, a compromised consulting industry and the private water industry -- dominated by the French firms Suez and Vivendi -- itself. But citizen movements across the planet are rising to challenge the World Bank and corporate schemes to wrest control of now-public water systems. Perhaps the hottest flashpoint in the conflict between the people and the Water Barons is in Ghana. There, the National Coalition Against the Privatization of Water (NCAP of Water) is aggressively opposing a Bank-advocated privatization scheme that would lease out the country's urban water systems for a song. The scheme was hatched in 1995, and may be implemented next year, unless NCAP can thwart it. (A newly released International Fact-Finding Mission assessment of the Ghanaian privatization proposal is available at: http://www.citizen.org/documents/factfindingmissionGhana.pdf) To make the system generate enough revenue to pay the operator -- a handful of international operators, including Suez and Vivendi, are in the running to take over the system -- the privatization scheme would require persistent rate hikes. The goal is to achieve cost recovery -- tariff revenue sufficient to meet operations and maintenance costs, without any public subsidy to keep prices in check. This, even though systems in the United States, among other industrialized countries, routinely rely on support from general tax revenues. Compounding the rate hikes, the privatization scheme calls for the inclusion of an automatic tariff adjustment -- with rates rising automatically to offset inflation and, most importantly, currency devaluations. That makes sense from the viewpoint of the foreign operator -- they will want to maintain constant profits in dollar-denominated terms, not in cedis, the local currency. But it is a disaster from the point of view of Ghanaian consumers -- their cedi income does not go up just because the value of the cedi declines. Assuming future devaluations, Ghanaian consumers will find themselves paying a higher and higher proportion of their income to the water company. In exchange for certain, ongoing rate hikes into the indefinite future, Ghana is supposed to benefit from a more reliable and efficient system, and from expansion of the piped water system to reach the millions of urban consumers who are not connected to water pipes. But almost all of the evidence suggests these promises will turn out to be illusions or deceptions. First, the record of private water company operation in developing countries is very poor. There is little to suggest that private companies deliver efficiencies in this area, though they are clearly skilled at extracting enormous profits. The details of the Ghanaian privatization plans offer little comfort that things will be different in this case.
