-Caveat Lector- First of all I want to be sure exactly what attachment is - if you mean athe little square box containing what usually is a picture, of course..I did some reading on virus attachments last night - and this one they called the 95 Hybrid, etc., they said was also this Snow White thing which I have received, but when I would try to bring up the picture, it would turn off my web completely. Now I forwarded the E Mail in its entirety; I received an EMail from this Norton thing that it had been quarantined - so normally I receive very few of these things unless sent by a friend - most of them are not compatible with web. Now Kris I do like to forward information, just plain text information - without the picture show. As usual I would comply with any and all your requests. So by attachments to be precise, you mean the little square pictures at the bottom of the E Mail. I always thought when I forwarded something, like item from web or New York Times, etc., that was an attachment. So of course Kris will not send these little attachments and I have a three way check going on as to why and how something like this could be sent - Wonder who Vic is? -Caveat Lector- Dear List, Yesterday morning when I turned on my work computer in the office, my daily update from McAfee Clinic included an announcement that I had a virus-infected file named "cleanup.exe" in my Eudora temporary files. McAfee was unable to clean it and suggested manual eradication. I did this by deleting the file. I checked my almost identical Dell computer at home and it does not have a file named cleanup.exe anywhere, so I guess the corrupted file doesn't need replacement. Usually there is other garbage that goes on when your pc gets a virus, as with other files added. However, when I tried to find out about these by going to Symantec.com and looking through their virus encyclopedia, I struck a blank. Cleanup.exe was not recognized by Symantec at all as any virus it had ever seen, and I've never failed with them before. So I guess my work computer is okay, but I really don't know and I'm nervous. After deleting the file a virus scan now pronounces the harddrive to be clean, but would it know if remnant associated files were left behind? BTW, my vigilant McAfee shield did not pick this up, and I did not open any executable attachments. I also do not read my mail in Eudora--I use Outlook Express, and keep my colleague's university mail in Eudora so we don't get the two confused. The only email she gets is academic stuff from scholarly lists and there have been no executable attachments. I still can't figure out how we acquired this one, but if anyone has received mail from me with suspicious looking attachments PLEASE let me and the list know, as I am worried about what mischief the virus might have done before I caught it. This virus which was sent to me which was deactivated was sent to me by someone on your list. The time element was a good clue and I figured that one out.. Time Zone - Zulu time matched only one other time zone. Strange some say they have received all these viruses - this one was only one I received other than this Snow White thing which comes on other list. The Norton antivirus program will deactivate a virus once it comes into YOUR computer, but that doesn't mean that if you then send the virus to someone else that it is deactivated for THEIR computer. If they are not protected by a current antivirus program such as Norton, it will infect them if they open your file. Make sense?
