[JavaOne] Apache MyFaces talk and Google Summer of Code

2010-09-23 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
FYI,

our Apache MyFaces talk contained a good amount of the HTML5 project
that has been done during Summer of Code.
Ali Ok was with me on stage to demonstrate his project. He did a good
presentation!
I am also very happy that he, as a GSOC student, could attend to join
my session!

BTW the session was packed and folks liked what they saw, including
Trinidad mobile, HTML-5 and our JSR-299 extensions.

Greetings,
Matthias

Google Summer of Code

2010-03-09 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

here is a wiki page, that has some more information on the GSoC program:

http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/COMDEVxSITE/GSoC

So, once the ASF has been accepted (to be announced on March 18th),
students can apply for it, starting on March 29th.

Re: [GSoc] Google Summer of Code Idea

2010-01-28 Thread Ingo Hofmann
Hi there,
I'm a student in my last semester and highly interested in going in for the
GSOC this year. However, I'm able to afford only 15 hours a week (approx.).
Would it be a good idea to apply for this project unter these time
limitation? I really don't have a clue about the required effort.

I would appreciate an advice.

Cheers,
Ingo

Re: [GSoc] Google Summer of Code Idea

2010-01-27 Thread Ali Ok
Hi Matthias,

Thanks for your support. I think this GSOC will be cool:)

Since this will be a seperate project, I will start modifiying my local
Tomahawk code-base, and inspecting how it works, right away.

About GAE, I've started preparing the document yesterday, but couldn't
finished. I will send the APT document, and a tutorial explaining how to set
up a Eclipse project, this night for sure.

Best Regards,
Ali

2010-01-27 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hey Ali,

the Google Summer of code has been announced (see my other email).

Regarding this idea on HTML5 related stuff,
I would like to sign as a mentor for it.

@GAE: I saw your path; Jakob did a quick review.
So, I hope we can commit that soon. Some more documentation,
e.g. a guide or a tutorial would be nice :-)

Hello everyone,

Many of you were wondering if Google Summer of Code 2010 is on for
2010 and the answer is yes! We will begin accepting application from
would-be mentoring organizations beginning March 8th at approximately
19:00 UTC, with applications closing on March 12th at 23:00 UTC.
Students can apply between 19:00 UTC on March 29th to 19:00 UTC on
April 9th.

We will be updating the program website [0], including the FAQs [1],
over the next few days. Not much is going to change except the
timeline, though there are a few FAQs that will be added. If you have
any questions in the interim please do send them to the list. Please
note that questions about which project you should select, etc., will
likely be responded to with "depends on your skill set," so please
take the time to do some research [2] about which project is right for
you.

While mentoring organizations for 2010 will be announced until March
18th, a great number of the projects that have participated in the
past [3] will return once again in 2010. Of course, that's not a
guarantee and we cannot accept every great project that applies. But
if you want to get a jump start on your participation in GSoC 2010,
considering lurking in the IRC channel of a past participating project
and seeing what useful things you can learn about their code base and
community. Check out project forums to see if it's a place you'd like
to spend your time.

I'll be sending a follow up message in a few minutes about what to
expect in the next few days/weeks and how you can help Google Summer
of Code 2010.

Google Summer of Code 2010 is on! Celebrate!

Re: [GSoc] Google Summer of Code Idea

2010-01-20 Thread Ali Ok
Hi all,
I sent a couple of mails about "MyFaces on Google App Engine" GSOC proposal.
But after some progress and a conversation with Matthias, I realized that it
is too small for GSOC.

And I am willing to implement HTML5 Renderkit.

Meanwhile, I will work on GAE support in parallel. I will post my patch to
JIRA after some -more- tests.

Regards,
Ali

Re: [GSoc] Google Summer of Code Idea

2010-01-06 Thread Jan-Kees van Andel
+1 on the HTML 5 RenderKit.

Yeah, and maybe ditch (or at least provide a more semantic) panelGrid,
for example, with a parameter to customize the HTML: dl+dd+dt, div,
table, ul/ol...
Especially when writing interactive apps with (slide) effects, I
always had a lot of issues with table-based forms...

About MyFaces 2.0: If someone manages to create a 1.2 compatible HTML
5 RenderKit, I don't have a problem with that (don't think it's easy
though)...

A more div-related layout would be _REALLY_ great. Maybe we can do this in
tomahawk 2.0.

Excuse me to sneak in the conversation, but may I suggest that this
html5 renderkit could be an opportunity to write a "table-less"
renderkit, relying more on CSS ? I think this could lead to lighter
html pages (with the default renderkit, you quickly end up with 5-10
nested tables without doing anything special) and easier/more flexible
skinning...

ok, I will figure out the details on the ASF side of things for that.

So, let's stay on this (dev@myfaces.apache.org) list and let's use [GSoC] on the
beginning of the subject.

Thanks Matthias and Jakob,

According to last year's
timeline<http://socghop.appspot.com/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2009/timeline>,
there is plenty of time to apply for the project at GSoC system(March 23)
and to start working on the project(May 23).

However I would like to start earlier; get to know you and talk about the
project.
I like preparing a proof of concept about these kind of proposals and I
think preparing it before March 23 would be great for me.

Since, Matthias is interested in mentoring, I will start investigating stuff
right away :)

Thanks for your support,

2010-01-04 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hello Ali,

this list, the dev@myfaces.apache.org list, sounds right to discuss
things like your proposal.

I'd like to see (better) support for GAE in the myfaces 1.2 and 2.0
code lines. Doing so sounds like
a nice project for Google Summer of Code. I'd be interested in
monitoring/mentoring this as well

Google Summer of Code Ideas & Possible Mentors 2010

2010-01-04 Thread Ali Ok
Hello everyone,
I think ASF will participate in the Google Summer of Code(GSoC) as last
year.
I want to begin working early and look for some ideas.

Nowadays, Google App Engine(GAE) is very popular and I think implementing
GAE support for MyFaces can be a good project.
What I mean is, running MyFaces on GAE out of box with some context params
like Mojarra's "com.sun.faces.enableMultiThreadedStartup" context parameter.
(Mojarra developers added this parameter but Mojarra cannot be run out of
box only with this change without some patched Jars.)
Many people wrote
articles<http://java.dzone.com/news/jsf2-configuration-google-app?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+javalobby%2Ffrontpage+%28Javalobby+%2F+Java+Zone%29&utm_content=Google+Reader>about
running JSF on GAE but, they include a patched JAR in their solutions.

There is a mail-list
thread<http://markmail.org/message/x6hovjqeztkgucur?q=google+engine+list:org.apache.myfaces.users+order:date-backward&page=1>about
GAE suppos rt, however GAE
*now* supports Servlet 2.5 and JSP 2.1, which is
necessar<http://myfaces.apache.org/core20/index.html>y
to run MyFaces Core JSF-2.0.

I couldnt find other discussion about GAE in MyFaces mail-lists.

Can you give me some other ideas? I looked into some issues at the issue
tracker but I couldn't find an issue that can be a GSoC project.
And I search for any possible mentors.

Cheers,
Ali

Subject: [GSoC 2009] Apache is officially participating in Google
Summer of Code 2009
To: p...@apache.org

Dear PMC,

It's now official, Google has announced that The Apache Software
Foundation was selected as one of the participating organization in
the GSoC 2009 program. This is an excellent opportunity for Apache, as
it allows projects to build/increase its community, it also help
students to learn about open source, about Apache Software Foundation
and how to do things the "Apache Way".

Please start advertising the program and discussing project ideas with
your project community. Then add your project ideas to the ASF GSoC
2009 Official Project Ideas page [1], as this is going to be the most
visible place for students. Per GSoC 2009 timeline, Students should
officially start applying for these ideas on March 23.

ASF Members and committers can volunteer to be mentors in the GSoC
2009 program (see [2] for more details about being a mentor). We
invite all mentors and GSoC interested parties to subscribe to the
code-awa...@a.o mailing list [3] to coordinate work between mentors,
ask questions and get updates related to GSoC 2009 program.

Please, feel free to forward this announce to any appropriate dev@ or
users@ lists so your larger community can hear about the GSoC 2009
program.

Hi,
Thanks for the help. I took a look at them. I think it is hard to create an
project proposal from them.
ASF is accepted and that means MyFaces is accepted too, right?

Thanks,

This project is very mature to create an idea, it is hard to less

p.s. Personally I'd really like to get Exception handling and tree visiting
done at that event. It's not overwhelmingly complex or long to do, but the
former is quite nice to have while the latter is critical for some 2.0
features.

What do you think about this?
How much effort is necessary approximately for implementing these tags?

Re: Google Summer of Code

2009-03-17 Thread Simon Lessard
Well I'm currently working on implementing
https://javaserverfaces-spec-public.dev.java.net/nonav/snapshots/jsf-spec-2.0-20090304/javadocs/index.html

Since that was posted on a public accessible URL and that it was posted on
jsr-314-o...@jcp.org then I assume it would be correct for me to push those
changes in the branch even if it was not posted on
http://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=314 yet... God, I hate legal meddling... Can
anyone confirm if that would be alright? Otherwise I'll just ping the EG on
the private list to shed some light on that.

Re: Google Summer of Code

2009-03-17 Thread Ali Ok
Hi,
Students will apply between March 23 and April 3, 2009. Working on the
project starts later, however we need to state clearly what will be done
during the application stage.

http://socghop.appspot.com/document/show/program/google/gsoc2009/faqs#timeline

Does somebody volunteer for mentoring ? :) I know we need to decide what
project can be?

Thanks,

event is going to occur exactly because there are HUGE changes coming on the
2.0 branch from the latest snapshot.

Hi,
I browsed the issue navigator. I can't say I can find a thing to offer in
Google SoC.
There are 64 issues unassigned and 42 of them is "Implement tag xx:xxx".
May be a proposal can be created packing some (or all) of them. What do you

What do you think about this?
How much effort is necessary approximately for implementing these tags?

Or you can give me some ideas.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Hi,

just to keep you updated: my summer of code project guys keep working
on the topics I provided them with. They have been testing out bugs on
the jira-list with the new dataTable component, and have started
reporting about that via jira comments.

Later on they will provide an AJAX implementation for the dataTable component.
