Hi Alain,

DSpace currently doesn't understand the ePub format and cannot render it.
However, with some work, it should be possible to implement an online
ePub renderer and integrate it into your DSpace.

[Dspace-tech] stat-report-general ran into errors...

2012-02-04 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Dear All,

Recently the stat-report-general we have set to run daily has generated
error messages as attached. The first line said that it filed to read the
file... I have checked the file and found it there with proper
permissions.

What I am suspecting is that, the said file may be generated by other
script and was locked. But still don't know how to figure it out.

Anyone has such experience before and any good solution to this matter?

Thanks.

What is your config value for mail.server in dspace.cfg ?
If your mail server is not the same one as DSpace server, the sendmail log
will not be recorded in DSpace server. You have to look for it in
your mail server as specified in dspace.cfg.

Email sent

[Dspace-tech] size of log files

2011-05-06 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

After running our production server for almost a year, I have noticed that
the log files generated by DSpace located in
[dspace-installed-location]/log consume huge disk space. To make this
clear, the assetstore uses about less than 50GB, but log files under log
directory take more than 50GB!

I wonder whether I have to keep all the log files... or I have a choice to
have log files older than specified period removed. In case of removing
old log files, will it affect the SOLR statistics ?

Currently we are running 1.6.2, but planning to upgrade to 1.7.1 shortly.

Your kind advice will be highly appreciated.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Moving data from one instance to another Dspace 1.6.2

2011-02-28 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Dear Stephen,

You did not mentioned clearly whether you just want to move the data
to another server with the same version of DSpace or with a newer version.

I would like to share what I did in my case.

1. From server 1 to server 2 running the same version of DSpace.
   1.1 Install DSpace in server 2 with a fresh install and make sure that
it is running.

   1.2 Stop both DSpace instances by shutting down tomcat(s).

   1.3 In server 1, dump the database using command line tool of postgresql
(are you using postgresql?). This should be done as the same user
running your DSpace instance:
  pg_dump dspace  dspace.sql

  Move dspace.sql to server 2. (In this case, I assume your database is
named dspace)

   1.4 In server 2, make necessary change to handles in the
dumped database(dspace.sql). Better use replace string feature of emacs
editor. Fro example, the handles in server 1 will be
http://server1.domain/dspace/handle/123456/somenumbers.  When you copy to
server 2 and you want them to become
http://server2.domain/dspace/handle/123456/somenumbers, then you have to
replace server1.domain with server2.domain. (I found it is more efficient
to do this using emacs.) You can use other text editors, but please make
sure that they will not destroy the file format.

 When this is done, restore the dumped database to server 2.
This must be run by the same user running your DSpace instance:
  psql dspace dspace.sql

  Again, I assume you name your database 'dspace'.

   1.5 copy all files under [dspace]/assetstore of server 1 to that of
server 2. I did this by a simple command of Linux from server 2:
  rsync -av username@[server 1]:[dspace]/assetstore/ [dspace]/assetstore

  You have to replace [server 1] by the correct name or IP of your
server 1 and [dspace] by the correct path to your installed DSpace.
  If you also want to transfer other data too, just do:
  rsync -av username@[server 1]:[dspace]/log/ [dspace]/log
  rsync -av username@[server 1]:[dspace]/reports/ [dspace]/reports
  rsync -av username@[server 1]:[dspace]/search/ [dspace]/search

   1.6 Start tomcat and done.

2. From server 1 to server 2 running the newer version of DSpace.
   Follow all the procedure in 1.1-1.5, (these should be renumbered as
2.1-2.5).

   2.6 upgrade the database structure, for example, from 1.5 to 1.6:
   psql -U dspace -f [dspace]/etc/postgres/database_schema_15-16.sql dspace

   2.7 start tomcat. You may have to run some init commands:
   [dspace]/bin/dspace index-init

Hope this helps.

 some of the problems. I am still not clear however, and hope that someone
 can give me a few specific answers. The two instances are on different Linux
 versions (from Ubuntu to Centos) and different versions of Postgresql (from
 8.4 to 8.1 - long story).

 I have used the Export (Migrate) Collection option in DSpace which has
 generated a zip file with the requisite information. I assume I now upload
 this to the new server, unzip it an appropriate location and then run the
 dsrun command with the appropriate options. Could someone confirm and give
 me the specific switches/options for the dsrun in this case?

 Also, is there options that can be used with the dsrun to export and
 import only the metadata but not bitstreams for a collection? I have tried
 using the Export Metadata option on the first server and and then the
 Import Metadata option on the second instance but that keeps failing with
 an unknown error.

[Dspace-tech] Handle numbers and link for OAI

2011-02-01 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

1. In our DSpace instance, we are running the handle server without
registering to the universal handle server(or whatever it is normally
called). Sometimes ago we set the handle prefix to 2553 and all the items
we imported to the system have that handle prefix. We changed the handle
prefix later to 2010 without modification to the previous items. All the
subsequent ingested items have a new handle prefix. This makes our system
contains items with 2 different handle prefixes. So far I have not
noticed any problem with this setting. Just want to know whether it is OK
to leave it like this or we should rerun the tool to set all the items to
have the same handle prefix?

2. Regarding OAI, when we want to register our system to DOAR, we have to
supply the URL for our OAI to DOAR. The recognizable URL looks something
like http://our.dspace.domain/oai/request. Just wonder why we cannot have
it like http://our.dspace.domain/oai?

It might be an idea to add /displaystats to your JSPUI's robots.txt

For Google to de-index pages, it generally likes to see a 404 (not
found) or a 410 (gone).

Unfortunately, the servlet that handles statistics display for JSPUI
throws a NullPointerException when a handle is passed to it that
doesn't turn into a valid DSpace object. It *should* throw a friendly
404 to help crawlers like Google realise the page is gone.

I've opened a JIRA issue for the NPE bug
- http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-689 - and attached a patch for
1.6.2 (and trunk, and probably other 1.6.x versions) that will make
sure that when anyone (including Google) visits those pages, it sees a
404 instead of Internal Server Error.

Hopefully this, along with /displaystats (and/or /displaystats* ?) in
your robots.txts or removal requests will help convince Google to stop
crawling.

Thanks Vinit for the information.
I checked the sitemap files under DSPACE/sitemaps and found that the
handles Google crawler keep on accessing do not exist in any of the files
there. Or there are sitemap files elsewhere?

How do I include the sitemap files in robot.txt? Sorry if this is a
stupid question.

Dear Panyarak,

Check ur sitemaps file. Find out the non existing pages and delete the URLs.

Plus in robots.txt file you have to give the location of the sitemaps.xml file.

[Dspace-tech] Google crawler repeatedly requests non-existent handles...

2010-09-20 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

There are 2 points here:
1. In our repository, we have configured to allow crawler to browser our
site by putting a robot.txt with only one line :
User-agent: *
I have checked with webmaster tools and it reports that the crawler access
was success. Anyway, I am not quite sure that should be OK. The problem
is that internal error messages are being sent to me everyday saying that
the crawler cannot access certain pages. I have checked the handles
attached and found that those are non-existent pages... Can any of you
please suggest what I should do to get rid of this kind of errors ?

2. I also submited sitemaps to Google, the latest result reported in
webmaster tools is:
   Sitemap: http://kb.psu.ac.th/psukb/sitemap
   Status: OK
   Type: Index
   Submitted: 17/7/2010
   Downloaded:17/9/2010
   URLs submitted: 4,545
   URLs in web index: 3,785

Should I stop the crawler as mentioned in 1? and what happened to the
URLs which reported as not in web index?

Thanks.

[Dspace-tech] Sitemap for google...

2010-07-17 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

I have been trying to submit the sitemap of my DSpace instance, but
without any luck.

In my case I submitted http://kb.psu.ac.th/psukb/htmlmap to Google.
Google then return an error status saying that the sitemap is in html
format which is not supported.

Google requires only xml formated sitemaps...

Can anyone please advice ?

Thank you.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Install dspace unsucessful

2010-07-08 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Dear Volodymyr,

I followed what Sean has suggested and everything was OK.
Could you please let us know some more basic information, e.g. what is
your base OS? which version.

I recently install DSpace 1.6.2 in Ubuntu 10.04LTS with no problem.
The important steps are:

1. Install all necessary components
sudo apt-get install tomcat6 maven2 ant-optional postgresql sun-java6-jdk
apache2 libapache2-mod-jk

2. Add a line like 'host dspace tomcat6 127.0.0.1/32 md5'
to /etc/postgresql/8.3/main/pg_hba.conf (or
/etc/postgresql/8.4/main/pg_hba.conf)
In this case your DSpace database name is 'dspace' and DSpace instance is
run by user 'tomcat6'

3. Create a user name 'tomcat6' for postgreSQL
sudo su postgres
createuser -U postgres -d -A -P tomcat6
exit
(Remember your password for tomcat6 here, you need it for step 11)

4. Modify 'shell' of user 'tomcat6' and create a database 'dspace'
sudo chsh -s /bin/bash tomcat6
sudo chown -R tomcat6.tomcat6 /usr/share/tomcat6
sudo su tomcat6
createdb -U tomcat6 -E UNICODE dspace
exit

5. Make sure that settings in /etc/default/tomcat6 look like this
TOMCAT6_USER=tomcat6
JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun
CATALINA_BASE=/var/lib/tomcat6
JAVA_OPTS=-Xmx1024M -Xms64M -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8
JSP_COMPILER=jikes
TOMCAT6_SECURITY=no
LOGFILE_DAYS=180

6. at URIEncoding=UTF-8 to a tag in /etc/tomcat6/server.xml so that it
looks like:

Connector port=8080 protocol=HTTP/1.1
connectionTimeout=2
URIEncoding=UTF-8   redirectPort=8443 /

7. Tell the system to use correct 'java'
sudo update-alternatives --set java /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java

8. Test if tomcat6 runs correctly
sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat6 restart
or
sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start

The following steps invlove installation of DSpace, and started from
step 10, all commands must be run by user 'tomcat6'.

9. Create the install location (I chose /opt/dspace here)
sudo mkdir /opt/dspace
sudo chown tomcat6.tomcat6 /opt/dspace

10. Download DSpace source (I chose /usr/share/tomcat6 as my working
directory, you can make your own choice)

sudo su tomcat6
cd
wget
http://nchc.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/dspace/dspace-1.6.2-src-release.tar.bz2
bzip2 -dc dspace-1.6.2-src-release.tar.bz2|tar xf -
(You should have DSpace source codes reside in ./dspace-1.6.2-src-release)

11. Modify some settings in ./dspace-1.6.2-src-release/dspace/config/dspace.cfg
dspace.dir=/opt/dspace
dspace.hostname={put your host name here}
dspace.baseUrl = http://${dspace.hostname}:8080
dspace.url = ${dspace.baseUrl}/jspui
dspace.oai.url = ${dspace.baseUrl}/oai
dspace.name=Your DSpace Instance Name
db.name = postgres
db.url = jdbc:postgresql://localhost:5432/dspace
db.username = tomcat6
db.password = (Your password entered in step 3)
mail.server={set this if you have one}
mail.from.address=ds-nore...@domain.name
feedback.recipient=ds-ad...@domain.name
mail.admin=ds-ad...@domain.name
alert.recipient=ds-h...@domain.name
registration.notify=ds-h...@domain.name
handle.canonical.prefix = ${dspace.url}/handle/handle/
handle.prefix = 123456
handle.dir = ${dspace.dir}/handle-server
webui.submit.enable-cc = true
webui.submit.cc-jurisdiction = {your country, e.g. en}
webui.strengths.show = true
webui.strengths.cache = false
webui.feed.localresolve = true
webui.session.invalidate = false
webui.supported.locales = en, ja
xmlui.supported.locales = en, ja
xmlui.force.ssl = true
solr.log.server = http://localhost:8080/solr/statistics

12. Build the package. (You can run this command either in
./dspace-1.6.2-src-release/dspace or ./dspace-1.6.2-src-release)

mvn package

13. If there is no error in previous step, proceed to install your
DSpace instance:

cd target/dspace-1.6.2-build.dir
ant fresh_install

The last 2 lines of step 13 should read like:
BUILD SUCCESSFUL
Total time: 2 minutes 0 seconds

Hope this helps.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Migrating From 'Test' To 'Live'

2010-05-12 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

What I did here is as follows: (Provided that you have both instances
using 'dspace' as their database names)

1. Stop both instances.
2. Export database from 'Test' instance using 'pg_dump dspace dspace.sql'
3. Transfer this database to the new box running 'Live' instance. You have
to empty the DSpace database of the 'Live' instance and then import the
database from 'Test' instance using 'psql dspace dspace.sql'
If the name of the server running 'Test' instance is not the same as the
name of the server running 'Live' instance, you have to modify the handle
in the 'dspace.sql' using text editors with the capability of 'find and
replace' before importing the database data. I normally use emacs.
4. Back to the box running 'Test' instance and tar all the files under
assetstore directory, transfer the tar file to the 'Live' box, untar it to
the assetstore directory of the 'Live' instance.

Please be noted that these have to be done using the same user that runs
DSpace instance.

 Hi folks

 I have a dspace instance which has been set up as 'test', and I'm putting
 together a 'live' environment. There's quite a lot of data in test, but none
 of it has gone through the workflow to proper submission. Questions:

 1) What would be the process for migrating the test assetstore into the live
 environment?
 2) Would the non-processed material get migrated, or would it be wise to put
 it through submission first?
 3) I notice that the URI for the uploaded item (.pdf or .doc generally) will
 contain the URL of the system. Is there a way to retrospectively change it
 from the test URL to the live, or should I tell the cataloguers they will
 need to re-load their items when we move systems?
 4) I have been working off the standard handles (eg 123456789/n), and will
 apply for a proper one now. What's the process for retrospectively applying
 handles once the new one is obtained?

 Sorry, that's quite a lot for one mail

Subject: [Dspace-tech] New and Improved DSpace Registry

Dear DSpace Community,

There is a new resource now available to the DSpace community -- the much
improved DSpace user registry
(http://www.dspace.org/whos-using-dspace/Repository-List.html). Please read the
news item below for more information.

Valorie Hollister
Director of Community Development, DSpace Project
DuraSpace
vhollis...@duraspace.orgmailto:vhollis...@duraspace.org

Have you ever wondered which institutions have upgraded to the most recent
version of DSpace or which repositories have video files stored?
DuraSpace is pleased to announce a new resource, the community DSpace
Registryhttp://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=i8p7uodab.0.0.5iy95gcab.0ts=S0483p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dspace.org%2Fwhos-using-dspace%2FRepository-List.htmlid=preview
 (http://www.dspace.org/whos-using-dspace/Repository-List.html).
The database was conceived of and designed by members of the DSpace Global Outreach
Committeehttp://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=i8p7uodab.0.0.5iy95gcab.0ts=S0483p=http%3A%2F%2Fwiki.dspace.org%2Fconfluence%2Fdisplay%2FDSPACE%2FDSpace%2BGlobal%2BOutreach%2BCmteid=preview
 (http://wiki.dspace.org/confluence/display/DSPACE/DSpace+Global+Outreach+Cmte) (DGOC) to address one of the
biggest challenges within the DSpace user community; not just to identify which institutions used DSpace, but also
cultivate a resource with some basic information about those repositories to help facilitate connections between
users. The work started early last year and included a Community Networking
Surveyhttp://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=i8p7uodab.0.0.5iy95gcab.0ts=S0483p=http%3A%2F%2Fwiki.dspace.org%2Fconfluence%2Fdisplay%2FDSPACE%2FCommunity%2BNetworking%2BSurvey%2BResultsid=preview
 (http://wiki.dspace.org/confluence/display/DSPACE/Community+Networking+Survey+Results), which gathered data about
repositories and seeded the information now available in the database.
Members of the DSpace community will now be able to search the database to
discover other institutions which have similar repositories, environments or
interests to their own. The hope of DGOC and the DuraSpace organization is that
this listing will help foster all types of connections and collaborations in
the future.

What is new?
The most popular page on the
dspace.orghttp://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=i8p7uodab.0.0.5iy95gcab.0ts=S0483p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dspace.org%2Fid=preview
 site for the last few years has been the Who's Using DSpace? page. This page was a simple list
of DSpace repositories with only the institution name, country and URL link listed. The list was not easily
searchable or sortable.
The new DSpace repositories database provides much more information and
functionality. And there are now over 800 known repositories included in the
database, representing over 80 countries.
Main Table View
The main database view provides you with a sortable table of all known DSpace
instances. It includes the institution name, country, type of institution
(academic, museum, government, etc), DSpace version/user interface and the URL
link. This list can be re-ordered by any of the fields listed -- so if you want
to get a quick view of who is using 1.6 XML/Manakin it can be done in an
instant by clicking on the column header.
Detailed Repository View
To view all the available information about a specific repository (use case,
file types stored, type of content stored, addons/extensions, database,
operating system, etc), you simply click on the institution name. You will then
view all the information available in the database about that particular
repository.
Search/Filters
On the left hand side there is a number of search filters, including an open
text search which you can use to perform a single or multi-faceted search and
will produce a listing of those institutions which meet your selected criteria.

How can you add or update your institution's information?
The information available in the repositories database is limited to what has been provided by the institution either by registering previously on
dspace.orghttp://dspace.org, the
ROARhttp://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=i8p7uodab.0.0.5iy95gcab.0ts=S0483p=http%3A%2F%2Froar.eprints.org%2Fid=preview listing
(http://roar.eprints.org/) or by responding to the April 2009 Community Networking
Surveyhttp://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=i8p7uodab

Re: [Dspace-tech] Solr statistics - Tomcat access denied

2010-04-15 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

I think I got the solution for this error. There are a few steps I have
not done:
   1. [dspace]/reports directory was not created. Why this is not
automatically created when we deployed the system? Just wonder.
   2. In dspace.cfg, (report.dir = ${dspace.dir}/reports)
there is an extra '/' at the end of 'reports'.

When I corrected these 2 points, the statistics works like a charm.

The Top City Views in the Solr Statistics is still not correct. It seems
that it is able to detect only Bangkok in Thailand while it is not true.

I remember that I raised this issue during the firest testathorn, and it
was solved. But why it is not working correctly again?

In the code its used:
location = geoipLookup.getLocation(ip);
city = location.city;
country = location.countryName;

So, if you wanted to make it more accurate, you can consider their other geo
database, or find an alternative that works better. Also, you could
encourage everyone to add their info to the user-submission IP address
sites, such as hostip.info as it looks like GeoIP gets its data from those
kind of sites. We obtain the known IP location pairs from sites that ask
the web visitor to provide their geographic location. The geographic
location along with the web visitor's IP Address is forwarded to us.

Also, I fixed up the stats-log-importer with a patch that can assist you in
debugging to help you find not-good-enough entries, by cleaning up verbose
output. http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-542
However, I don't think there's any manual work you can do to clean up the
imported entries.

 You'll need to download the properties files from the languages module
 to your DSpace installation's webapps/jspui/WEB-INF/classes directory
 first. It may also require a restart of your Tomcat server.

 The messages files are already encoded but you can use various tools to
 make modifications to the file.

 The quickest is to run the native2ascii command line tool against the
 encoded properties files, make the changes you need, then encode them
 back to ascii using the same tool.

 Alternatively, there are a number of good gui and webui tools available
 for bulk editing. One integrates into Eclipse and is available at
 http://sourceforge.net/projects/eclipse-rbe/. Another, which we use, is
 TongueTied, http://code.google.com/p/tongue-tied/. It takes a little to
 set up but it provides really good online management of properties files
 and doesn't require your translators have Java running on their machines.

 Hope this helps.

[Dspace-tech] Where is Messages_LOCALE.properties ?

2010-04-13 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

I am now in the state of implementing DSpace 1.6 to our service. There
are a few modifications I would like to make to Messages.properties file.
For English language, this can be done with difficulty. But for some
other languages, I just could not locate the files! In the manual page
139 it is said that those file are in (for example Thai version)
[dspace-source]/dspace/modules/jspui/src/main/resources/Messages_th.properties

But there is no such file!

I search the entire source package using command
   find [dspace-source] -iname Messages_*

I could find related files for xmlui, but not for jspui...
And more over, there is no message_th.xml for xmlui too.

Can anyone tell me where I can find these related files and where should I
really put them before I build and deploy the application ?

Re: [Dspace-tech] Where is Messages_LOCALE.properties ?

2010-04-13 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Thanks Hayden,

I set the supportin locales in dspace.cfg to be something like this:
webui.supported.locales = en, th, ja

And then deployed the DSpace. There is no problem to have them switch
between each locales. But I found it very tricky because the
Messages_LOCALE.properties files are not anywhere in DSpace paths!

I took a look at /path/to/my/repository/webapps/jspui/WEB-INF/classes, it
is just an empty directory! Where are those different language messages
from? Does the system read them directly from
http://scm.dspace.org/svn/repo/modules/dspace-api-lang/trunk/src/main/resources
?

One more thing, I downloaded the Messages_th.properties, and
Messages_ja.properties in order to make some necessary modifications. But
they are in something like native codes. Is there some tools we can
convert them to human readable form. Sorry if this is a too basic
question. If possible the instruction should be included as comments in
the files.

[Dspace-tech] upgrading from 1.5.2 to dspace-1.6.0

Hi,

I did an upgrade to 1.6.0, but did it in a new test instance. What I have
done so far was:

1. Created a new DSpace database named 'dspace'.
2. Installed a fresh DSpace 1.6.0 instance.
3. Deleted the database
4. Created a new DSpace database named 'dspace'
5. Imported data from existing database to new DSpace database using teh
following command: psql dspace dspace.sql
where dspace.sql is SQL data dumped from the existing database

Upon running this psql, there are a set if warnings:
WARNING: no privileges could be revoked for public
REVOKE
WARNING: no privileges could be revoked for public
REVOKE
WARNING: no privileges were granted for public
GRANT
WARNING: no privileges were granted for public
GRANT

Will these warnings have any possible harm to the system?

Please note that there is no error when I ran the command as stated in
step 7 as written in DSpace manual. Running 'dspace index-init' did not
produce any error too.

The Ubuntu/Debian distribution is built using the Debian Maintainers Guide.
This is why it is never a good idea to change anything that a maintainer has
installed.
You are asked politely during upgrades if you want to keep your custom
changes or use the maintainers.
Now when upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to Ubuntu 10.04 it is always a good
idea to use the maintainers version of things.
But then you lose all your customisations of the maintainers version. What
do you do ?

You never customise the maintainers version. Rather submit an upstream bug
report.
Rather customise your software to fit so that upgrades and security patches
work seamlessly.

So in the case above, give the tomcat6 user full write permissions to the
/dspace folder and sub-directories.
Check this after re-builds and add in a step to setup permissions after
rebuilds.

I have been doing upgrades with Debian/Ubuntu for almost 8 yrs now and have
learnt the hard way to obey the Debian Maintainers.

Cheers

[Dspace-tech] Patch error for 1.6.0

2010-03-27 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

I am about to install a new instance of DSpace 1.6.0, but would like to do
some patching before building the package.

I have downloaded pacth files from jira and did the patching as follows:

1. patch -p0 checksum_mail.patch
This one sounds OK. No error.

2. patch -p0 sword-api-pom.xml.patch
I got error messages like this :
(Stripping trailing CRs from patch.)
patching file dspace-sword/dspace-sword-api/pom.xml
Hunk #1 FAILED at 16.
Hunk #2 FAILED at 42.
2 out of 5 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file
dspace-sword/dspace-sword-api/pom.xml.rej

3. patch -p0 dsrun.patch
This one also gives errors:
patching file dspace/config/launcher.xml
Hunk #1 FAILED at 50.
1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file dspace/config/launcher.xml.rej

Any suggestions ?

2010-02-01 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

I have a DSpace instance running 1.5.2 in an Ubuntu 9.04. The default
Tomcat is 6.x and comes with openjdk. Tomcat6's config file resides in
/etc/default/tomcat6 and the line you mentioned reads:

JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk

I have tested the submit page and found no problem both in JSPUI and
XMLUI. Am I misunderstanding something ?

 Other users are having this problem too (on Ubuntu), can you confirm if
 this is/was your problem too?

 Hey,

 could you try to take a look at this ticket about the xmlui. You can
 browse the site and login, but if you try to register, click submit then
 you get the errors in the ticket.

 http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-444

 It might have something to do with the latest version im using (Fedora
 12 other people with Ubuntu have the same problem) since almost the same
 configuration are running on a RedHat Enterprise 5.

Re: [Dspace-tech] DSpace 1.6 Testathon - The Big Bug Hunt - Report for Day 1

2009-12-08 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi Stuart and all,

Thanks for your advice. I logined to the
http://eldorado2.tu-dortmund.de:8080/jspui one of the Testathon and found
that I have already been assigned as administrator. There are a couple of
points I would like to share here:

1. I tried both JSPUI and XMLUI of the same site. It surprised me that I
had to registered for each UI separately. If I am not wrong, in previous
version, there is no need to register to each UI.

2. I browse the statistics by clicking the view statistics button of
a particular community or collection. The Top Country Views is fine, but
the Top City Views needs more improvement. I am living in Hat Yai city
or Songkhla Province, but the count is associated to Bangkok which is not
correct. How does this module work ? Does it retrieve city information
from the IP or just use the capital city of the country ?

3. I also tried the OAI and SWORD, seems that these are still
underconstruction.

4. One question, what is the MIT Links at the bottom of each item. For
example, in http://eldorado2.tu-dortmund.de:8080/jspui/handle/123456789/11
there is a button label MIT li...@sfx which points to
http://sfx.hbz-nrw.de/sfx_ubd?title=Test+submission+with+workflow+step+1aulast=Doeaufirst=Jemimadate=2009-12-07

Is it specific to the site only ?

 suggestions for improvements to email notifications. The more of these we can
 gather, the better we can make DSpace 1.6.

 Please join in with the testathon...

 WHO: You! Everyone is invited to take part, and we've make it as easy as
 possible for you to have access to a DSpace 1.6 test system.

 WHAT: Help us to put DSpace 1.6 through its paces to try and find any
 remaining bugs. It will also allow you to try out some of the new features in
 version 1.6 such as embargoes, statistics, batch metadata editing, devolved
 community administration, authority control, and much, much more!

 WHEN: Monday 7th to Friday 11th December 2009

 quality the final release will be.

 HOW: See http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/Testathon for details. You are also

[Dspace-tech] Display abstract field as hyperlink

In our batch (bulk) importing process, we would like to eliminate the

a hyperlink to existing abstract file instead. By default, however, the
display of abstract field does not support html tags... Can any of you
suggest where I should modify to have DSpace support html tag in abstract
field ?

Thanks.

[Dspace-tech] LDAP configurations for Ubuntu and 1.5.2

should the content of such file be ? In my system, the content of such

#SIZELIMIT  12

Hi,

I also doubt if the upload size is depends largely on the capability

The default DSpace configuration allows uploading of 512MB, but if the

This may not apply if the server and client are both in the same network.

Dear Zico,

You have to edit the proxy section in /etc/maven2/settings.xml to point
to your proxy server. This is applicable if you are using Linux Ubuntu.
If you are using other OS, you have to figure out where this file is.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Dspace 1.5.2 with security-constraint

2009-04-18 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

To secure some pages as suggested in
http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/ServletSecurity

I tried to implement the code :
  security-constraint
web-resource-collection
  web-resource-namePages requiring HTTPS/web-resource-name
  url-pattern/profile/url-pattern
  url-pattern/register/url-pattern
  url-pattern/password-login/url-pattern
  url-pattern/ldap-login/url-pattern
/web-resource-collection
user-data-constraint
  transport-guaranteeCONFIDENTIAL/transport-guarantee
/user-data-constraint
  /security-constraint

into [dspace]/jspui/WEB-INF/web.xml and found out that when click at My
DSpace (which will usually bring up a password-login page), it came out
that DSpace tries to bring up that page via
https://localhost:7443/jspui/password-login
which does not work in the system. Actually, I have already set the
system to run thru Apache's mod_proxy as I still could not config Tomcat
to bring up SSLEngine...

Is there any other solution ?

Please also note that using XMLUI does work when turn on 'xmlui.force.ssl
= true', DSpace brings up https page in normal port(as configured by
mod_proxy). After logged in, however, DSpace does not switch back to
http, it continues to use https for subsequent pages. Is there a solution
to this too ?

[Dspace-tech] Dspace 1.5.2 with XMLUI

2009-04-17 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

Just successfully upgraded from 1.5.1 to 1.5.2.

I have tried configuring UIs to support multilingual. This works fine for
JSPUI, but seems failed for Manakin or XMLUI. I am not sure I missed any
points or not.

I read the DSpace manual (HTML) Section 3.3.2 (There is a link which
should direct to somewhere else rather than to itself), Section 5.5.1, and
5.6.1. Modified the dspace.cfg as indicated, but XMLUI just does not show
any language selection links

I am not sure whether the property name xmlui.supportedLocales is
correct ?  Shouldn't this be xmlui.supported.locales ?

 Hi Panyarak,

 It is possible to run with Tomcat security turned on, you just need to

 If you want to have the security option turned on, you will need to
 allow Tomcat to have access to the files where you have DSpace installed
 as Tomcat needs to write files to the asset store, write log files, read
 configuration files etc.

 The following link should help:

 http://books.google.co.nz/books?id=bgMKmsXVbTACpg=PA36

 So if you have Dspace installed in say /dspace/ then make sure you
 configure tomcat to be able to read and write to all the files in there.

Hi,

There is so far no one answers the questions...
I just figure out that the file
[dspace-src]/dspace-api/target/classes/Messages.properties is lack of a
line like
jsp.mydspace.request.export.community   = Export Community

This seems to be fixed in 1.5.2, but not for 1.5.1 yet.

If we build the package from source, it is possible to modify this, but it
is not possible if we build it from binary package... Am I wrong ?

[Dspace-tech] https for DSpace instances...

2009-04-08 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Dear all,

With the helps from many of you, I was able to bring up a DSpace instance
for testing phase now. There are a few questions:
[The DSpace version 1.5.1 in Ubuntu 8.10 with Tomcat6, Maven2, Ant 1.6,
OpenJDK(equivalent to sun-java6-jdk)]

1. It is suggested that https be used especially for authentication, I
tried to do so according to
http://www.dspace.org/1_5_1Documentation/DSpace-Manual.pdf and DSpace
Developers Documentation
(http://wiki.dspace.org/static_files/7/7d/DevelopersDocumentation.pdf)
with no luck. I am using Tomcat6 in Ubuntu 8.10. Is there any special
point I should pay more attention in ?

2. To bring the DSpace up, it is suggested that the environment variable
TOMCAT6_SECURITY in /etc/default/tomcat6 be set to 'no'. I did set this
to 'yes' as Tomcat suggested. But in that case DSpace will not start.
Why is it designed in that way ? If I want to run DSpace with
TOMCAT6_SECURITY=yes, what else should I do ?

3. As administrator in DSpace, I chose certain community, the screen
appeared as in the attached file. Please notice the 4 buttons at the
right corner, the forth one does not display correctly... Where should I
modify to have this fixed ?

Re: [Dspace-tech] Install dspace unsucessful

2009-04-03 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

I downloaded DSpace 1.5 Live CD from
http://cadair.aber.ac.uk/dspace/bitstream/2160/565/3/DSpace%20Live%20CD%20-%201-5-0%20v2.iso
and have it booted as a virtual machine in VirtualBox.

I then try to figure out the settings in that installation and I could not
find where in tomcat5.5 which set the user who run tomcat as dspace ! It
is very clear from 'ps -axu' that tomcat is run by tomcat55. But I
noticed that tomcat55 belongs to group 'dspace' and 'dspace' also belongs
to groups 'admin'.

All directories related to tomcat5.5 owned by tomcat55 but some files
under /etc/tomcat5.5/Catalina/localhost.

In tomcat6, something called 'openjdk' is installed together with
tomcat6 while this is not required in tomcat5.5. Could this be the cause
of Java's *.jar errors

Could someone who successfully installed DSpace in Ubuntu 8.10 be kind
enough to document the installation instructions and post to this list ?

Thanks.

A million thanks to Sean ! That's it ! Now it works !

The problem was the setting of /etc/default/tomcat6 which is usually
ignored in any installation instruction. Maybe it is worth to just add a
few lines about that, don't you think so ? At least it is very useful for
ones who do not know about tomcat before.

I also noticed that (I said this before) tomcat6 comes together with
openjdk which can be substitution of sun-java6-jdk, but I have not tested
it yet.

Thanks to everyone who has been willing to help.

 Could you enter

 ls -l /usr/share/java/jsp-api-2.1.jar

 And tell me what it says ? Could you also run ls -l against the directory
 where you have installed tomcat and the 'dspace' directory ?

 Cheers, Robin.

 Actually I'm a little surprised that it is looking for that jar in that
 directory but that is another problem.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Install dspace unsucessful

2009-04-01 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Thanks for additional info. I am now starting from the first step using
Ubuntu's repository management system. At the moment, I finished
installing postgreSQL and now installing TomCat6.

In DSpace's installation instructions, I read:
Note that DSpace will need to run as the same user as Tomcat, so you
might want to install and run Tomcat as a user called 'dspace'.

This is very confused as it should not be possible to install any software
package without being 'root' in Unix like system.

What should I do next ?

 Thanks a lot for your information. I did not record all the details I did
 last time(s). Sometimes I was stopped at 'maven package' which I learned
 from others experiences that it was the file permission issue. Sometimes
 it seemed that I successfully went through the 'ant fresh_install', but
 could not see anything when called from browser. I rebuilt DSpace again
 and was stopped at 'ant fresh_install'

 Anyway, I will try again and let you know later.

 Rightly so. Your user process is owned by 'postgres', not 'dspace',
 and that is what the Ident daemon will report to PostgreSQL. Your
 user and database credentials do not match, and that match is required
 for Ident authentication.

 It is possible to create the database when I 'sudo su dspace'. This can

 Yes. Since the database/user pair in question is authenticated with
 Ident, the matching usernames are sufficient.

 Is there anything wrong in this step ? I did do further to install the

 Well, I think that the command should be 'createdb -O dspace -E
 UNICODE dspace'. The database needs to be owned by 'dspace' but it
 need not be *created by* 'dspace'. You should be able to use the
 PostgreSQL superuser ('postgres') to create the database.

 But it sounds like you have created the database properly. Maybe you

Re: [Dspace-tech] Install dspace unsucessful

2009-04-01 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Dear Mark,

Your explanation is quite clear and I think I have been doing in a wrong
way. Someone even document something like setting directories of tomcat6
(e.g. /etc/tomcat6 /var/lib/tomcat6 /var/cache/tomcat6 and
/var/log/tomcat6) to be owned by user 'dspace' !!

Well, I was silly enough (ignorance enough) to follow that and finally
caused tomcat6 unable to start !

Another big point, I read from someone's document saying that a command
like:

update-alternatives --set java /usr/lib/jvm//usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java

is also needed. (Specific to Ubuntu 8.10 with sun-java6-jdk package). Do
we have to run this command every time when server is rebooted ?

 The account used to install software, and the account used to run it,
 may be different. The instructions here seem to be aimed at someone
 who is installing Tomcat without the aid of a distribution's package
 manager and solely for use with DSpace. Since you are using Ubuntu's
 package manager, it probably created a user account specifically for
 Tomcat and installed the product to be run by that user. I use Gentoo
 Linux and the Tomcat packaged by Gentoo, and it does the same, setting
 up Tomcat to run as a user named tomcat.

 The important thing here is that the user account used to run Tomcat
 must have sufficient access to the DSpace files. If Tomcat is set up
 to run as a user tomcat then I would install DSpace in such a way
 that it is owned by tomcat, probably by just being 'su tomcat'
 before installing. You can use the 'root' account to create the
 [DSpace] directory and set its ownership appropriately, before
 installation.

 It is difficult to document this process literally, because different
 operating environments might use different account names. If you have
 some reason to run Tomcat as a particular user, then I would consider
 every reference to dspace as a user account to be a placeholder for
 the account that Tomcat uses, whatever that is.

Hi,

I reinstall dspace using 'tomcat6' as the user of tomcat6 and dspace's
database... The installation seems to be alright, I guess. You may help
to take a look at:

The result from 'mvn package'
http://www.me.psu.ac.th/~panya/dspace/mvn_package.txt

The result from 'ant fresh_install'
http://www.me.psu.ac.th/~panya/dspace/ant_fresh.txt

I chose to create a file at /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost which looks
like:
http://www.me.psu.ac.th/~panya/dspace/dspace.xml

When I restart tomcat6, a log file says many errors:

Could someone tell me what could be the causes of these errors.

Thanks in advance.

[Dspace-tech] Install dspace unsucessful

2009-03-31 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

I have been stuggling in installing dspace on Ubuntu 8.10 with
dspace-1.5.1, PostgreSQL8.3, Apache Ant version 1.7.1,
apache-maven-2.0.10, apache-tomcat-6.0.18 with no luck.

I notice in many instruction mention that after installing PostgreSQL,
created a Unix user (name it dspace). One needs to create a database user
and database. In this step, one has to become 'postgres' and issue a
command to create a user:
   createuser -U postgres -d -A -P dspace
This could be done with no problem and I answer 'no' when asked:
   Shall the new role be allowed to create more new roles? (y/n)

As postgres, I tried to create a database:
   createdb -U dspace -E UNICODE dspace

But the command returned an error message:
createdb: could not connect to database postgres: FATAL: Ident
authentication failed for user dspace

It is possible to create the database when I 'sudo su dspace'. This can
even be done without specifying '-U dspace' in the command line.

Is there anything wrong in this step ? I did do further to install the
package, but finally failed.
