[Dx4win] DX4WIN
Hi, Having read most, most likely all, messages I want to share some of my thoughts. 1. Automatic uploads, possibly one QSO at a time, is not in my plans. My main reason is that I expect that it requires more support than I'm willing to provide. If something goes wrong, they call or write me while it may have nothing to do with DX4WIN. Think about issues with certificate changes, server not responsive etc. I simply do not have the time or desire to add this to my support load. Using an ADIF file is a nice separation between DX4WIN and other applications processing such file. Note that I get plenty of emails regarding lost or misplaced license files etc. A number of users do not like to use the reflector for a support question, so I field those. 2. Interfacing with other applications UDP Have to admit, that so far I have not found out how to do this. I would like to support such an interface. Jim, AD1C, provides great support maintaining the country database, the custom awards etc etc. He also helps users that ask him for help. I also want to recognize the users of the reflector who are willing to put in their time to help other users. I think some of you have the wrong idea about the company behind DX4WIN. It is literally a one-man show. I'm retired and I'm glad to have a reasonable retirement income. Income from DX4WIN is nice but it does not feed the family! Re: [Dx4win] Fw: Re: Very Satisfied with DX4WIN
Well put Jerry. --* SPOILER ALERT -- what follows is somewhat long and detailed and carries quite technical language. If that bores you.LOOK AWAYlook away!* When I made my earlier post complementing the software, I didn't expect the small wave of negative rebuttals I would get. Ahhh, but I should have known better and anticipated that. I'll use a very good example. I used to run large motorcycle rallies for many years. It required numerous hours of research, then numerous hours of on the ground research, which required multiple trips to "Ground Zero" for the rally.all by the way on my dime.requiring me to burn up vacation time..pay for travel, hotels, etc. Pounding the ground to work with the Chamber of Commerce, the Police Department, the Hotel for the rally, City leaders, restaurantsthe prep work goes on and on. Reach out to vendors to get door prizes. Then pack all this stuff up and go to the rally when it actually occurred. Then work the majority of the time at the rallycountless hours. It was exhausting. Andhere's my point (and THE CORRELATION TO DX4WIN) - at the end of the rally, you'd typically have a FEW people complement you and tell you what a terrific job you had done (these were quite often the people who had experience putting on similar events and KNEW firsthand the hard work and countless hours involved). You'd have likewise a few squeaky wheels. who blasted you.usually about something like "you gave me $100, but you gave it to me in $1 billsand I'm going to complain now long and loud". Typically, the negative "whiners" are the ones everyone hears, of course. And thenTHE VAST MAJORITYsay nothing. No thankyou, no whining...they just expected a great "product"got itand they're happy and content and just go on their merry way. And that.when I got a few loud/vocal complaints from the usual suspectsa few compliments from the usual suspectsand mostly heard NOTHING.that was exactly when I knew I had put on a quite successful event. And from my experience, that's the same thing that goes on in most things in life. The majority just take things for granted. Whether it's free, costs money.doesn't really matter. You typically hear the few compliments, the few complaints..and mostly, a "bunch of nothing". I wanted to be one of the ones complimenting, because I know a lot about what it takes to pull it off. To put it in specifics (*LOOK AWAY if you're neither Technical, nor care about what I have to say - *), in the software worldyou have a bunch of user requirements. You, the Coder (or company doing the coding), have to prioritize what you can address and how much time you have to address it. In the Government, they have large boards that meet quarterly or annually and prioritize these requirements. But it's not that simple. You have Problem Reports (PRs) that get prioritized. Usually on a scale of 1-5. With 1s and 2s being high priority...typically MUST fix type stuff. You know, the code is BROKE type stuff. Stuff that's lower...like 3-5 priority stuffis stuff that can wait, or you find a Known Problem and Workaround (KP). Likesome of the posts here about being able to upload stuff to LOTW with a few clicks or steps. Is it automatic like some want? No. But it's a KP's a workaround. So often, as it's Priority is between 3-5, it gets moved back DOWN the priority list to fix. Stuff left over from prior boards often become Deficiency Reports (DRs). Now, they MUST be brought up at the next board when determining priorities. You get the picture. It's more complex than meets the eye. Granted, a logging program isn't as involved (perhaps) as an operating system for millions of folks, but it's more complex than first thought perhaps? Then you have to build Use Cases for all the requirements you're going to address. How will they actually be implemented. Then figure out how your'e going to Code it once you have Use Cases. And then the real fun part. TESTING. You have to do System Integration Testing (SIT). Does the code load properly? Is it able to boot up and the main functions work? Now no doubt the most demanding part of Testing.Regression Testing or ROT. Did i break something. Sure, we seemed to have added some new features. But all this stuff has to work together. You'll never hear the end of the complaints from those same "loud folks" if you broke something that worked perfectly before! And what makes ROT especially hardand quite TIME DEMANDINGis attempting to predict all the negative things that can be done to the code to break it. What if this user puts letters in a date box? What does it do? Does it give an error message? Does it break the code and require a reboot? ALL POSSIBLE INPUTS...have to be documentedscripted for testing.and then tested and documented. Didn't get the results you expected? Something breaks with an unexpected input. Back to coding again. And again. And again. Every

Re: [Dx4win] Very Satisfied with DX4WIN
There is no reason why we all have to be resigned to the fact that DX4WIN must be frozen in time and there will never be any more enhancements. Paul, after a seven year hiatus, recently added FT4 and FT8 as new modes and provided support for QRZ.COM XML integration, along with some other nice features like automatic updates. For those of us you are weak signal DX enthusiasts, we would like to see UDP Broadcast support so that we can automatically import digital contacts from WSJT-X. This is a major feature that is now supported by almost all other logging programs. DX4WIN has for years provided a very nice, seamless integration between MMTTY and DX4WIN. Providing the same for WSJT-X is all that we are asking. It is a major feature that is vitally needed, especially as the summer E season approaches on 6 meters. Last summer there were several openings on 6m from the Midwest in NA into Europe where my entire screen in WSJT-X was lit up in red. I needed to know in real time which stations were new countries for me on 6M (any mode), but I had to hand type each call into the QSO window of DX4WIN. This was very hectic and awkward when so many were calling at once. I basically had to ignore DX4WIN and work the pile up in WSJT-X. After the dust settled, I then imported the ADI file from WSJT-X into DX4WIN to find out if I had worked any new ones. I have recently tested another logging program that handles this integration between WSJT-X and the logger very nicely. The two programs talk to each other exchanging data via UDP broadcast. A window from the general logger displays the calls from WSJT-X and tells you which ones are new for DXCC. If you click on a call in WSJT-X to begin calling that station, the callsign is immediately put into the Callsign field of the general logger. A QRZ.COM XML lookup takes place from the logger and the station's info is displayed so that you can again confirm callsign, locations, grid, etc.--all while the contact in WSJT-X is taking place. Then when the contact is over and added to the log in WSJT-X, it is also immediately added in the logging program. You can immediately send a spot if desired. All of this happens very fast and seamlessly between the two programs -- very similar to how MMTTY is currently integrated into DX4WIN. Some may ask why I just don't go with the other logging program if I like it so much. I actually prefer many other features within DX4WIN mainly because it can easily accommodate my 187,000+ contacts without getting too slow and because it also provides group support for my DX-pedition calls. And yes, the country and awards databases maintained by Jim, AD1C, are the best. Thank you Jim. But the one glaring weakness in DX4WIN, based on the current standard among virtually all actively supported logging programs, is the lack of UDP broadcast support for communicating with other programs like WSJT-X and FlDigi. I might add that the other popular loggers also offer the option to automatically upload to many services such as Lotw, Clublog, QRZ.com and others. This summer, as 6 meters heats up, it would be nice to have the option to turn on automatic updates to Clublog so that each contact is immediately uploaded to Clublog. That way DX stations on the other end can use the link on my QRZ.com page to see if they made it into may log. I have used this feature in Belize and Grand Cayman using N1MM+ and it worked very well. All the other loggers provide the option to turn UDP broadcast support on or off and the same goes for automatic updates to Lotw or Clublog. So, for those users of DX4WIN who do not have any interest in these features, Paul should allow them to simply not turn them on. In short, UDP broadcast support is a current standard within the hobby that needs to be incorporated into DX4WIN. I hope that we can use this forum to continue to discuss new enhancements as our fascinating hobby continues to evolve. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of WA7AA Sent: Thursday, April 16, 2020 11:25 AM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Very Satisfied with DX4WIN On 16-Apr-20 08:02, Michael Mathis wrote: > I am very satisfied with DX4WIN: User since 1999, never posted to group - silent majority? I must say I have also been a dx4win user for 20+ years and I have always been very satisfied with it's operation. That being said I have tried all the programs a fore mentioned here in the past couple of years. I will not attempt to name them all. I am sure each is a good program and each has it's merits but the only logging program on my computer at this point is dx4win and will continue to be my go to general logger. It does every thing I need and hope it is around for the duration. 120,000 Qs plus. 73, Bob, K5BG On 4/16/2020 11:25 AM, WA7AA wrote: On 16-Apr-20 08:02, Michael Mathis wrote: I am very satisfied with DX4WIN: User since 1999, never posted to group - silent majority? rue Bruce, the search is just great with DX4Win. But the program is not being adapted to the changes in our ham world... FT8, LoTW, Clublog... Is it that hard to implement these improvements ? Re: [Dx4win] Goodbay Dx4win
Hello Tim I love DX4Win I've been user for many years, maybe not as much as you that is because I'm younger I'm not Electrical Engenieer and I never programmed anything but my timetable... But I know one thing you could be the best Engenieer or programmer in the world but you are not a great sales manager No one are talking about bad issues of DX4Win, We Just want to know what the future is... If you want to be stacked in the past is your choice, but let younger users to ask for some improvements.. .It seem that everytime a user ask for something some one of you become pissed of, I can't understand why... I work to serve others and we alwaays say that the customers opiniond make us improve and we need to hear them But not here?? Why? because you are a happy user??? F..k the rest because it is perfect for me .Is a good policy to stay alone. The major improvement of DX4WIN was the last year and bring us only the FT8 mode and some other minor updates, we only ask for some improvements , two or three because we love this program The attitude is no leave them alone, the right attitude is fight for us. One thing is true unhappy customers that complain look for an improvement and they want to stay or come back, unhappy customers that don't complain never comeback , you have lost them Hav a nice day walking over your green grass in you pastures. Re: [Dx4win] Goodbay Dx4win
Tim It is not a question of being satisfied, it is a question of being totally ignored by the developpers. Yes, DX4Win does a lot of nice things, it does everything most hams expect from a logging program. But any request for update is totally ignored : no reply whatsoever. But I am repeating myself, I think... Any company that would not respond (one way or another) to its customers' remarks is bound for bankrupcy... 73 Paul F6EXV (DX4Win user for ... 25 years maybe...) I agree with what Branko wrote. I've had DX4WIN since I bought it with floppy disks. I spent money but no new features, I chose Swisslog.
