2014-01-05 Thread n4dsp
With due respect to all little change is going to occur which I am sorry
to say.

We have FINALLY heard from Paul and aware of the direction DX4WIN is taking.
Well boys I have supported Paul and DX4WIN speaking to others informing
them what a great dx logging program it is and quite frankly I cannot do
that
any longer especially after what Paul had to say today. Therefore I
downloaded
and installed LOGGER 32 and like all new programs there is quite a
learning curve
but I will be much further ahead in another month than I will be with
DX4WIN

five years from now. Have been loyal to DX4WIN but it's over. Some will be
happy there will no longer see any more posts from n4dsp! LOL. Hate to see
such a great dx logging program coming to it's end and it's troublesome.
Made the ARRL Honor Roll with this program from my first contact to #334.

Paul,SELL THE COMPANY.

Respectfully,

A few comments though

1. Did you see any inclination or willingness to incorporate them into
DX4WIN?
2. Although it is unlikely he would have every rig produced, it should
be noted that I, for one, attempted to develop a rig file for the
FT3000...sent many messages to him for assistance...and never heard
back. I had a Yaesu 'demo' FT3000 shipped to me and it sat here for
months awaiting assistance and nothing...this was a while after his
personal moveyes, the rig files are rather basic but how DX4WIN
handles these files are hard coded and cannot be user defined or
changed. I have quite a bit of documentation in this issueas do
others. We are/ were willing to work with him but the effort hasn't
been reciprocal.
3. LOTW isn't going away...or GlobalQsl...or EQSLincorporating
easy interface to these systems seeming would be a selling point for
DX4WIN. Without them, DX4WIN is severely lacking.
4. As in number 3, QRZ.Com is here to stay...and most of your users
access it routinely.

Paul, this isn't an attack on you...and regrettably there has been
some severe tone between a few users...hopefully, we can get back on a
more positive, productive track.

However, this thread is an indication of the frustration of your
loyal, paid users. We want DX4WIN to succeed but there needs to be
some indication that DX4WIN is alive and well...and will be supported
and improved.

Yes... we could all move to a different platform ...we have a number
of other choices...but we have been sticking with DX4WIN but without
finite information from you, Paul, we've been in an informational
vacuum. Paul, incorporating user input and enhancing DX4WIN appears to
be a win/win situation. We look forward for more information as to the
direction and future of DX4WIN.

Art, Bob, and Zoran,

what was originally an excellent post addressing the need to end the
4 year lapse in updates to the excellent but stagnated DX4WIN program
has been thrown off course by you three.

Another thread has appeared by Hams that are in favor and discussing in

You three appear to have "issues" so no further replies

Bob you really should change-out that picture on qrz.com/k8bl.

Re: [Dx4win] Updates

2014-01-05 Thread n4dsp

Paul should put a link on the DX4WIN website for owner's to contribute
their idea's to the "Wish List".

I sent an email to Paul 2-3 weeks ago with a suggestion and did not
receive a response so I resorted

to the DX4WIN Reflector to BE HEARD.

Requesting some attention from the owner's of DX4WIN, the people who
support the Owner, asking for

continuing improvements is not bad mouthing just to clarify.

On 1/5/2014 12:26 PM, Tod wrote:

I think that some of the postings with the subject "Updates" should really be posted with the

DX4Win started as a logging program as I recall. Operating was up to the person who had
the amateur license; logging the QSO'S that resulted from the "operating" was
the job of the program.

Over time the intellectual property owner has chosen to add features and
present new Versions for sale. Some of the added features happen to relate to
operating things rather than logging of QSO's.

As purchasers and users all we can properly expect is that the features
declared to be in the Version we purchased work as they are defined to work for
the equipment environment for which they are declared to be functional. That
implies that new radios , new rotators or new COM to USB devices are not
explicitly supported. If the IP owner chooses to modify the Version to expand
the supported equipment environment, great. The same thing is true for
logging/operating features. If the IP owner chooses to add them, fine.

It seems a bit unreasonable to use the "product user reflector" to 'bad mouth'
the IP owner.

Of course there is nothing wrong with making suggestions that the product
planner can consider when ( and if ) a new product or new version is being
planned. Commenting on what you wish was present or even identifying an
alternate product that has a feature you 'wish' was present seems reasonable.

Building a list of features that users "wish" were present seems reasonable too;
particularly if maintenance of such a listing is not expected to be the job of the IP owner. It
would be even nicer if someone had that list on a web site so it could be referenced by people.
That might reduce duplicate postings about certain " not present yet" features.

Bob,
So you think it's a great fabulous program. Then continue using
it. There are other's who want to see some changes. They should
not be subjected from people like you and Art crawling out of

By the way that pic on your qrz.com/K8BL is pretty scary.
You should put another one in it's place.

Why is it and it's not just with this reflector when post's come out

expressing dissatisfaction with DX4WIN and expecting and willing to pay
for revisions, the DX4WIN Addicts come out stating exactly what Erkki
stated?

I choose DX4WIN years ago because it was progressive and on the move unlike
the contemporary logging programs at that time and in the past 4 years
it has

gone into exile.

Erkki if you like and enjoy the updates from Jim AD1C great. Your a happy
camper. I like DX4WIN also but I want my logging program to continue to
be one of the best and up to the times. If we use your approach Erkki in
regards to computer OS we would all be running Windows 3.5 or even DOS
in today's world.

You stating you have to express a different view? Well that "different view"
is occuring now for the past 4 years. Nothing. Nothing while we wait
patiently
for change. Not everyone is content with the status quo. Some of the
DX4WIN user's

I know have moved onto DXLAB because of the status quo and have not looked
back.

Don't see any change coming from Paul. Only country, node, and other file
updates. Thank God for Jim because if not for his dedication this DX4WIN
would have gone the way of the dinosaur by now.

Once again if Paul doesn't want to do some revisions then sell the company
to someone who would love to.

Regards,
john/n4dsp

john.

On 1/4/2014 2:21 PM, Erkki Heikkinen wrote:

I have been using DX4Win since V1.6 and now I am using V8.4. There is
absolutely nothing I miss in DX4Win. It does everything I need. Most
important are the groups as I have logs from over 30 callsigns in the
same log. However, I think most users don't know how to use the groups.
It takes some manual reading...

There seems to be wishes to connect the DX cluster with one click. I
don't have problem to click three times. LoTW is also easy - a few
clicks and no problems ever. If there are no more updates to the
program, I will probably be using this version the rest of my life. Of
course your needs might be different.

A big thank to Jim AD1C who has put a lot of work into the updating of
country files. And a big thank to Paul for making the program.

Hi, John.

I have been using DX4WIN since V2. It has been four-and-a-half years
since V8 was released and three years since it was last
updated. Last
year at this time I told myself I would give Paul one more year to
provide us with some meaningful updates or I would move on to an
actively-maintained program like DXLAB. Using DX4WIN is
second nature
to me and the learning curve for a program like DXLAB will be fairly
high, but at least DXLAB is moving forward, not stagnating.

I downloaded DXLAB last night (as you know it is free) and so the
journey begins

Thanks for the memories, Paul, and all the support, Jim.

I am no computer geek so not sure what you mean by virtual ports.
Cable is USB to USB. Downloaded the driver from the Kenwood website
and installed.

Under Device Manager/Ports;
Silicon Labs cp210x USB to UART Bridge (com3)

That's all I can tell you Art.

If you go into the Windows Device Manager, and click on the '+' sign
next to "Ports (COM & LPT)" you will see the port assignments. You
may be able to right-click on one of your virtual ports (like COM7)
and assign it to a different number. But if the radio works OK on
COM7, why not leave it that way? Remember, you can only have ONE port
assigned to a given number.

I don't have any advice to determine what application is trying to
access COM3 besides DX4WIN. Go through all the DX4WIN preference
tabs, and make sure that all devices are using a unique COM port #.

If you had created virtual COM ports because you are using a
USB-to-serial cable (or a RigBlaster, microHAM, etc. device), try
deleting all the virtual COM ports, then reboot, then create only the
ones you need.

Re: [Dx4win] 590S Port Problem-RESOLVED

2013-12-15 Thread n4dsp

Problem Resolved.
For the list info COM 3 was being used by the Software CW Keying/PTT
Control in
Preferences/CW. I never used cw keying so it may have just defaulted to
that port but
installing the 590S driver it chose COM 3. So I reassigned the driver to
COM 7 and all

is well.

Hello.
Dx4win running for over ten years now. In the beginning I made the mistake of
replacing my country file instead of merging and it threw my dxcc entity stats
out of whack on each and every band. It's impossible to go back and correct it
at this point. Sent an email to lotw yesterday asking if they could send me my

[Dx4win] Elecraft K3 Radio Interface problem.

2012-05-09 Thread n4dsp
Less than a week ago I downloaded version 8.04 and installed the license.
Excellent service by Paul. Once I placed the order on sunday I had the key
within 2 hours!

My interface cable is the Elecraft KUSB to Serial with FTDI chipset. Downloaded
and installed the cdm driver. There are a couple of issues with it. The main
one is the radio and computer will communicate but after 30 minutes of non
activity an error message will display stating "Radio timed out. Radio
Interface has been disabled." I click on the OK Button and the Error Message
window does not close and manually cannot enter any data in the qso window or
any window while this window stays open. In order for the window to disappear
and the radio interface to work properly again the USB cable has to be
disconnected from the front computer port and reconnected. This occurs half
dozen or more times per day.

Radio Setup Parameters are:

Type Elecraft K3
Baud 4800
Com Port Com3
Poll Rate300
Max tries6
DTR Unchecked
RTS Unchecked

The K3 baud rate in the menu is set for 4800.

Any suggestions?

[Dx4win] Website Callsign Lookup

2007-08-12 Thread n4dsp
In File/Preferences/Ext.Data/Website callsign lookup/Callsign lookup address
, I have the address as http://www.qrz.com/. The Enabled box is checked but
whenever I enter a callsign in the qso window and press enter I get this
message;

"QSL Contact information Not Found
We're sorry but we do not have the QSL information for: N4DSP"

I am not sure why I keep this message with any call I type into the qso
where I should be getting all qsl information. Anyone have a clue?

[Dx4win] Cannot mark qsl for print

2007-07-18 Thread n4dsp
Thank you Jim for the reply.

I now have a filter selected but when I go to
Labels, Set Print Flags, or Mark for QSL,
a box comes saying "Setting label field and
no QSO filter active."
Why is this occuring because I do have an
active filter running. When I open my log it
only shows the qso's which are in the active
filter that I want to print.

thanks

I think that means you have no F8 filter active.

I guess instead of using a group selection by date, you could have used an F8
filter starting with 1 July 2006. Then you would not have received the
warning.

For example I want to mark roughly 1500 cards from July 1st of last year to

And by the way I do I determine that the labels will be printed alpha

Sure. Mine's been running for years on all versions since 1.4. The
defaults in the Rig file work perfectly. Be sure that you have RTS
and/or DTR lines enabled if you're using one of the many types of
level converters that are powered from the RS-232 port.

Can you be a little more specific if you're having trouble, or is

[Dx4win] Nodes

2007-04-09 Thread n4dsp
I do not think it makes any difference which node one connects to. They are
all linked using the arc cluster software. Just do a sh/node and you can see
this. Yes you can go into each node or the node of your choice and set up a
filter for your station and pass W, K, or strickly the 5 or 6 callsign
zones. I live in North Carolina and I use the k8smc in michigan and the w4to
node in tennessee and I receive the same spots on the both of them without
setting up a filter verifying the nodes are all connected.

[Dx4win] (no subject)

2007-04-09 Thread n4dsp
Paul,
I no longer have the email you forwarded to me since it was 3 years ago. I
asked you if something could be incorporated into the dx4win program that
when a node drops the connection the dx4win program will sense that and will
automatically try and connect you once again to that node. I did not mean in
my email to you to have a "keep alive" function on the node and I was clear
about that. This was putting the burden on the owner of the node.
So can something be incorporated into the dx4win program to automatically
sense that the node connection has terminated and the dx4win program to
automatically connect back to that node?

To summarize, there are some issues, it works for

[Dx4win] Where is the Tech Support?

2006-11-12 Thread n4dsp
Marc,
so you are saying this is normal? Like you I never had this issue with my
Kenwood TS-930SAT or my Yaesu Mark V. My two month old Orion II is doing
this and one other person beside myself that I know of is having this band
mode change in the qso window. hmm.
After using dx4win for 5 years and suddenly this start to happen with the
Orion II caused the red flags to wave.
If I am using a cw interface and running dx4win with the function keys and
using the cw/rtty special keys option and making 4 qsos per minute and a
spot comes over the packet cluster the program will sputter and it really
slows me down due to this and then the incorrect band and mode data in the
qso window. That should not happen and it is either a problem with dx4win or
it is the Orion and no one wants to take responsibility for it!

John,
it cannot be working correctly. I must continually watch
what the band and mode info is before I hit the enter key
to log the qso. I have had many band and mode errors in
my logbook due to this and I should not have to watch
it. No John, there is a bug in the program.
Thanks for the reply there OB.

[Dx4win] Where is the Tech Support?

2006-11-12 Thread n4dsp
Seems that this very problem has been addressed a year and a half ago.
Searching the archives I found in June 2005 persons having this very
problem. Though version 7.02 says the bug was fixed it is obvious it was
not. I have not looked earlier or later than June 2005 for further posts
pertaining to this issue.

[Dx4win] Where is the Tech Support?

2006-11-12 Thread n4dsp
Thanks for the email Scott,
The radio is turned on and in the qso window the band and mode are grey
indicating it is reading the band and mode from the radio; However, when a
spot from the packet cluster comes across the band and mode in the qso
window will change to that spot for 5 seconds or longer and then it will
revert BACK to the band and mode the radio is on. This happens on every spot
from the packet cluster. Also when the band and mode in the qso window
changes due to the spot from the packet cluster they still remain grey.
Hope this helps.

[Dx4win] Where is the Tech Support?

2006-11-12 Thread n4dsp
Bob,
with the radio OFF and the dx4win packet cluster running, the spots band and
mode will show up in the band and mode in the QSO Window and will stay there
until another new spot. That is normal and that is not the problem.
When I turn the radio ON and hit F9 for real time, whatever band and mode
the radio shows that is what the band and mode will show in the QSO windows
band and mode; HOWEVER, when a spot arrives from the packet cluster the band
and mode in the qso window will change to that spots band and mode. My
radio's band and mode does not change to the spots band and mode.
Does that help? Anyone out there have this problem running dx4win and the
Orion II?
Three weeks and counting with this issue.

[Dx4win] Where is the Tech Support?

2006-11-10 Thread n4dsp
I have had a problem with dx4win for three weeks. Emails have been sent to Paul
with no acknowledgement of received emails. Why is this? My program is not
working correctly and I have tried to keep this out of the public eye but three
weeks? Where is the Tech Support? Bands and Modes are being incorrectly logged
with version 7.02. I am finding these errors in my logbook. This has been
passed onto Paul but still no comment. Has his email address changed? Is he
out of the country? Where in the world is Paul Evander. Help Paul! At least say
HI.
This problem cannot be addressed on this reflector. There is a glitch in the
program itself.

[Dx4win] Incorrect data in qso window

2006-11-01 Thread n4dsp
While logging in real time using version 7.02 with the packet cluster running
the band and mode of the spots is somehow crossing over and changing the band
and mode in the qso window. After a second or two it reverts back to the band
and mode the radio is parked on. This should not happen when dx4win is being
run in Real Time. Consequently this will lead to logging errors. Anyone have
any ideas what may be causing this "crossover"? This happens on every spot
which crosses the cluster.

done via serial and parallel port.

Hi all,

Sorry but this is a repeat question and I cannot find the reply in the
archives. When a spot comes it, it is announced by DX4WIN and I have
forgotten how to switch off these announcements.

Can anyone advise please?

[Dx4win] Orion II with dx4win

2006-10-25 Thread n4dsp
Made a second call to Ten-Tec and they feel it is not a problem with the radio
but with the logging program. Whenever I tab from different portions of the qso
window entering the logging data such as callsign, rst, etc there is hesitation
and many times this lag effect will last for a couple of seconds. Many times I
will be typing the callsign of the station and nothing appears and it will seem
to be locked up then everything will appear. Ten-Tec asks does the DX4WIN
logging program have the Orion II as a specific radio in the preferences /radio
tab and the answer is no and they say that is the problem. The tab only says
Orion and data is for the 565 not the Orion 566. I spoke to Paul Clinton, the
service manager for Ten-Tec and he is going to review this scenario with his
people but in the meantime has anyone else encountered this with their Orion II
and DX4WIN?

It's not your radio!

I never had this problem in DX4WIN, until I recently (within last couple of
months) had to install Windows XP from scratch. Now I have the problem
occasionally. My CPU usage is near 0%. I have an ICOM, not Orion radio. I'm
using the microHAM microKeyer as my radio interface. I have McAfee AntiVirus
running, but that's about it.

As I said, the problem just developed recently. I wonder if one of Microsoft's
recent updates cause it?

Thanks for the replies
I have ver 5.03 the voice announce works via external speakers, BUT the CW
announce only works via internal computer speaker.
From the replies, I'm assuming an wav file was written for the CW announce
via external speaker???
Thank you, 73 de Bernie/WO2N.>

[Dx4win] manual question

2006-10-15 Thread n4dsp
Is the dx4win users guide version 6.03 an abridged manual?
At one time I had an earlier version which seemed to me was more comprehensive.
If so where can I download that one.

Ricardo

I use V6.04 of DX4Win with my FT-2000 with no extra hardware, just the cable
between the rig's CAT port and the PC's serial port.

The radio file is available in the FILES section of the FTdx9000_FT-2000 Yahoo
user group. You need to save this file in the RADIOS directory of DX4Win then
select the radio in your DX4WIN preferences. You will need to set RTS high in
DX4Win OR set menu option 29 on the FT-2000 to RTS OFF for it to work.

Hope this help,

John, G4IRN.

Also what should North and South Cook prefix be? It is still coming up as
