[Elecraft] Solar flares and 80M serendipity

2004-11-08 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr.
The sun had set, and remnants of this week's solar flare were still in
the air, so I was expecting near-dead band conditions.
I had just settled in to finish my K2 ATU, but decided to turn the rig
on to see what the bands sounded like. Right away on 80M I heard
someone calling CQ, armchair copy.
I looked up the call on QRZ as it sounded vaguely familiar, and it was
WA5TCZ, Darron, who was a novice buddy of my father (formerly WA5UBQ,
now N5LK).
Darron had contacted me by email he saw my name on eHam, and we had
tried for a sked a couple of times, but it just didn't work out from
California to Louisiana.
Darron said just finished a K1-4...could it be Elecraft Mojo and
Louisiana Gris-Gris?

Leigh WA5ZNU

[Elecraft] Call for SCANS of an UNBUILT KX1 PC board

2004-11-08 Thread Tom Hammond

Hi Folks:

Does anyone happen to have an UNBUILT KXI which they might consider
scanning BOTH sides of the main PC board for me?

I have a request from a user to try to provide him with connection info for
the K6XX CW Tuning Indicator to his KX1 and having access to a set of 300
DPI COLOR scans of the KX1 main PC board would be VERY beneficial.

BEFORE you scan and send anything, PLEASE drop me a note first... I only
need ONE SET of the scans, and having 4-5 folks graciously send them (when
only one set is required) is a waste of a lot of folk's time.

Please reply off-reflector to my e-mail address, above.

Thanks,

Tom HammondN0SS

The NB can produce spurious signals when there are loud signals on the band. In
the contest, there were so many loud signals that the usual symptom -- sort of a
brapp brapp that follows the keying of the strong signal was replaced with an
almost continuous noise. In order for a noise blanker to work it needs to pick
up signals over a wide bandwidth. Turning on the noise blanker has a very
severe effect on the receiver's dynamic range, which is why it's possible to
turn it off!

[Elecraft] KPA100 T/R Switching Failure

2004-11-08 Thread Don Melcher
I'll try this again - sorry if it appears twice

During SS, one of my K2/100s (4029) failed. No RX and as I recall no TX.
It was intermittent at first (and had intermittently shown this symptom
before) and to be honest, between fighting a cold and trying to work at
least a sweep between family commitments for my father's (W6ARM) 85th
birthday (I missed - if you can believe it - LAX & SDG - doh!) things is
a bit fuzzy.

I did some poking around and another thing I noticed was failure of it
to communicate with the KAT100 (if I recall correctly it was talking to
the computer correctly).

This morning, I took the PA off and hooked just the k2 up to the antenna
and all seems fine. So I started checking voltages in the PA, and the
problem seems to be in the High-Voltage Bias Supply. All the voltages
are low - with the higher voltages by about 30% and the lower ones by a
lot more. i.e.:

Anode Cathode
D1 7.6 93
D2 65 7.5
D3 5.8 65
D4 31 5.8
D5 4 31
D6 13.74
D7 -18 *
D8 * 0

* Undetermined - the display my cheap DMM is flashing between odd values
an -1 as if it were an AC voltage or out of range - better test gear at
the shop would help - but it is there and I am here and I don't feel
like going if I don't have to. It can wait.

Power set above 100 W:

Cathode RX Cathode TX
D11 80 .8
D12 .8 52
D13 80 .8
D14 .8 52

So while they seem like they are doing what they should - the voltages
are way off. The notes in the construction manual on page 43 indicate
the voltage test was within range when built - and it has been working
fine for about 6 months of light use - though it was acting up
intermittently.

So I looked at Q8 - the collector voltage is at around 2.3 - 2.5 volts
instead of 11.6 (It is 13.6 at the input to T3). The base voltage is -28
or about 10x what it should be - although the chart says that is
approximate and may fluctuate (and it is fluctuating) - but it isn't
anything close to -2.5 - so I am thinking Q8 went south (open emitter?)

Since it is rather a pain to replace - I would like to get opinions from
others - there may be something I am overlooking (and I AM under the
influence of cold medications - so things are a bit fuzzy).

Thanks

Don

Look under "Tools -> Account Settings -> Local Folders -> Local Directory" and
the directory will be listed. Your folders will appear as files inside this
directory. Each file (folder) is a concattenated list of your emails. You
may have to turn on "View Hidden Files and Folders" inside explorer to see
them.

Re: [Elecraft] WAS in SweepStakes in 6 Hrs (Almost)

2004-11-08 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I put in about about 6-7 hours of SS - all on 40m with the K2 and a long
buddipole up 8 ft in the front yard. About 4 hours were between 0300-0730z and
woke up early Sunday morning to put in 2-3 more hours (1230-1500). Had no time
after church to work any more SS (was hoping to get on 20m and get more
sections). I worked roughly 50 sections and I think I made almost 100 contacts.
I turned it all off when it was time to leave for church, and I do remember my
last contact broke the 10,000 pt barrier - and I was a very satisfied operator
(and thrilled with the K2).

I haven't worked 40m much late at night, but I think I'll try to do it more
often when I can't sleep. California was amazingly open after sunrise - but I
think I was aided more by the super contesting station's antennas and
conditions than my 5W and buddipole. With my compromise antenna and QRP signal,
I would tune around (with the pre-amp off) and look for signals that were at
least s9 to work. If they were s5 or less, I usually found that they could not
even hear me. Most of the time, I was averaging 15 contacts/hr, and maxed out
close to 20 in the morning.

Not being a highspeed (>20 wpm) CW op - I found that I had to use a CW
receiving 'crutch' on my pc. It saved my hide about 75% of the time ... but my
ear was improving towards the end, and I found that I was getting comfortable
with the 25wpm ops.

For W0NTA - I heard you Sunday morning working a KS station (and you were quite
strong into OK), and wish I could have worked you - it would have been my only
2-way QRP contact.

[Elecraft] K2 #03756 - Sweepstakes 2004 Report

2004-11-08 Thread Ken K3IU

Greetings all:

Like Tom Hammond(N0SS) said... Sweepstakes is FUN! Really the only contest
that I put any effort into. This year's effort was minimal... about 11
hours. QRP level and only a low wire make things even more challenging. I
didn't manage a clean sweep, but got 'em all except NT, AK, and PAC. In the
late afternoon (~21Z) I had to come upstairs and watch the Patriots whip up
on some team from out in the midwest. By the time I got back downstairs
to continue with the contest, the ionosphere was really messed up and my 5
watts couldn't seem to get out of the back yard.

Anyway... here's my results. If I'm lucky, I'll win first place, QRP, in my
section (RI).

40 138 27
20 73 21
