[Elecraft] K2/100 refurbishment

2024-03-12 Thread Steve Bunting via Elecraft
Hi.

I’ve picked up a K2/100 from an sk sale. It has two issues:

1. The 100w PA doesnt work. I get power from the low power stage but above 15w
power output drops to zero as the 100w stage clicks in. Before I go through all
the devices systematically, is there a common fault that I can check?

2. The screws are a quite rusty and I would like to replace. Does anyone know a
UK source of the American size screws that I can buy?

Cheers
Steve

[Elecraft] Manual for pre 3000 S/N K2?

2024-03-10 Thread Steve Zabarnick
I recently bought a pre 3000 serial number K2 (S/N 2539) which is the older
Rev A version. I am looking for a pdf of the K2 manual for these older
units. The manual does not seem to be on the
Elecraft web or ftp sites. Anyone know where I can get one?

[Elecraft] KX-3/2M transverter

2024-02-26 Thread Steve McKee
Hi all, I've got the 2M transverter installed and it works great. I have a
35W amp inline so I use it a lot on 2M locally.
But the issue I'm having is it randomly shifts 5khz on me. Seem to do it
when I put the mic down, so bought a new one. It didn't help still have the
problem.
I haven't noticed if it does it on the HF side as I haven't spent a lot of
time on it.
Anyone have this experience??!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 TUNE power reduction without ATU installed .

2024-01-14 Thread Steve Cooke
To Dave and Mike I must hold my hands up and admit to starting a  "
wild goose chase " .

I had misinterpreted the manual and  convinced myself that the power
reduction when pressing TUNE relied on an ATU being installed ... I had
even proved it to myself ... if I did a TUNE at 25W , it didn't reduce
power , hereby backing up my false belief .

Taking on board the advice from you both , I found that if I did a TUNE
at anything above 25W , the power _was_ reduced ...so it seems that this
particular K2 has a power reduction threshold of 25W instead of 20W.

Many thanks to you both for your replies and helping me correct the
record , you were right and I was wrong !

[Elecraft] K2 TUNE power reduction without ATU installed .

2024-01-14 Thread Steve Cooke
I've just recently bought a used K2 /100 for use at field days with my
local club ( to save my own K2 from getting hammered too much ! ) . I'd
like to use it with a remote ATU  . The output of the K2/100 is reduced
to 20 W with an Elecraft ATU installed and the TUNE button pressed
is it possible to fool the K2/100 into doing that when no ATU is installed ?

The reason for trying to implement this is so that nobody has to
remember to reduce the power level when changing bands and then trying
to tune the ATU at 100 W at 4 a.m.  it is bound to happen sooner or
later !

Re: [Elecraft] Noise from KAT500?

2023-12-06 Thread Steve L
There have been several tests in QST of switching power supplies in the past -
including analysis of RF noise they create which was actually scary. Some are
better than others, but all generate RF noise.

I second the vote for non-switching (i.e. linear) supply from Astron (or
equivalent) and eliminating all of the “wall wart” style supplies you can.

Re: [Elecraft] Astron RS-35M Hum

2023-10-03 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
Here's the resolution to my Astron RS-35M Hum issue.

First my thanks to all who replied on and off list.

With the transformer isolation pads installed the hum was noticeably reduced
and did not change with load. But it was still noticeable. So I looked at the
bridge rectifiers to see what was required to change them and discovered that
one of the six connections had never been soldered!

The only hum now on this 5 year old PS is low level and you have to put your
ear to the cover to even hear it. It's the same as my never-hummed 14 year old
unit if you put your ear to the cover.

It appears that inspection/QC missed this one.

Consider the thread closed.

[Elecraft] Astron RS-35M Hum

2023-09-29 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
Astron RS-35M Hum (and probably other Astrons).

I've found some posts in the archives related to this topic so perhaps a bit OT
but hopefully of general interest.

My Astron RS35M developed a hum that increased with increased load. Otherwise
working OK but became annoyingly loud.

My solution was to insert a round rubber pad at each of the four mounting
screws between the chassis and the transformer.

3/4" OD x 1/4" ID x 1/8 inch thick.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJPF9QMZ

The hum now is very low. Nothing that would otherwise stand out if I weren't
listening for it. And it does not change with load or increased load.

So the problem seems to be mechanical coupling between the transformer and the
chassis with the hum amplified when the cover is on the PS. Likely varies with
any given batch of transformers. My much older RS-35M exhibits no hum at all
even under load.

[Elecraft] AT1 Attenuator

2023-09-22 Thread Steve Gray
I have purchased a second user AT1 recently, largely due to the ruinous
TransAtlantic logistics costs, but also the ongoing absence of any support here
in The UK.

Although purely from observation of the circuit topology it seems reasonable to
assume that it is not a constant impedance array of resistors, I was quite
surprised to see the high SWR readings recorded after connecting a good dummy
load and an antenna analyser- encroaching as it does well into double figure
readings. My received wisdom being that these devices need to look into a 50
Ohms load to preserve accuracy.

I have checked all the resistors and they are extraordinarily accurate leading
me to believe that it has not been cooked by the/a previous owner, and
confirming the quality of Elecraft dedigns. I also noted that the greater the
level of attenuation, the lower the SWR is with the lowest attenuation
displaying the worst result, and the highest displaying a near perfect match,
but I guess that is not surprising because it is attenuating the reflected RF
too. What I would like is some reassurance that such elevated SWR readings are
to be expected for a nominally 50 Ohms stepped attenuator of this nature set to
the lower levels of attenuation.

Re: [Elecraft] Grounding, Lightning & Attic Antennas

2023-07-29 Thread Steve L
I might add to my own question…
- All wiring entering the house and in the development is underground:
electricity, phone, internet
- I can guarantee our builder did not use lead lined plywood for the roof deck
otherwise creating a faraday shield in the attic
- There’s no Hardee board (concrete) or aluminum siding, or stucco, or aluminum
foil vapor barrier in the construction

I am considering a horizontal loop antenna matched by an Icom AH-4 in the attic.

What I don’t clearly see is how to provide a station and antenna ground for a
basement operating position.

I’m reading all the recent posts on the Elecraft reflector concerning lightning
protection…

After a recent move, I am working on the design and construction of attic
antennas for both HF and V/UHF. The topic of grounding and/or providing
lightning protection for this installation has baffled me given no outside
presence of any antenna components. While not so concerned about a direct
strike (perhaps naively?) I am concerned about induced currents and resulting
equipment damage - where clearly disconnection may be the best protection.

Might anyone have any good references for reading/study on grounding
recommendations, how to’s, best practices, etc. for attic antennas?

Thanks a bunch,

73,
Steve

Re: [Elecraft] Field Day Operation

2023-07-01 Thread Steve L
Yes, as I understood it, the Icom rise time default is a BAD choice, but recent
(e.g. IC7300 and others) radios permitted changing this to a better value,
although still behind the cleaner output of Elecraft & Kenwood.

The other interesting part of the discussion was the use of “pre distortion”.
Again I read this as a way for the exciting transmitter to compensate for
non-linearity (and resulting dirty emissions) introduced by a modern
semiconductor based “linear” amplifier (one place where tubes excel).

All new and interesting stuff to me - and apparently the driving force behind
the ARRL “Clean Signal Initiative” to both define better standards, then rate
transmitters in ARRL testing against these standards. And of course,
encourage/coerce manufacturers to clean up their outputs!

Re: [Elecraft] Field Day Operation

2023-07-01 Thread Steve L
George,
The IC7300 was among the better commercial transceivers in terms of spurious
emissions, clicks, splatter, etc. It wasn’t at the top of the list (the K3s is
however), but was in the “better” category. However, Rob recommended a change
in the CW signal rise time to no less than 6 milliseconds - I forget which menu
item it was - but he criticized Icom specifically for a default setting that
induced key clicks.

Take a look at this presentation - while it is titled “Receiver Performance
What is the Limit Today” he mixes discussion on transmit composite noise with
receiver performance. It was really eye opening for me.

There are others on line as well.

I was wondering too about the huge signal in the center of the waterfall….
Hopefully, the ARRL “Clean Signal Initiative” will help encourage manufacturers
to clean up these messy transceivers!

I recently discovered several presentations by Rob Sherwood - famous for his
receiver testing. I was fortunate to get to meet him at Hamvention this year
and thanked him for his work. His new(?) message: CLEAN UP THE DIRTY
TRANSMITTERS. And he calls out specific models! BTW, Elecraft was NOT on the
lists, but it is surprising which ‘high end’ transceivers were. It’s worth
reviewing his presentations on the subject - and it kept me from a bad upgrade!

Re: [Elecraft] Where to put the wattmeter

2023-04-21 Thread Steve L
My eyes were recently opened in reviewing several Rob Sherwood NC0B
presentations regarding the receiver testing he is famous for…. as the
presentations really focused on transmitter cleanliness. In the presentations,
Rob argues we have many excellent receivers available to us today - and goes on
to argue today’s transmitters are the problem loading the bands with splatter,
phase noise, key clicks and other undesirable artifacts, with Elecraft among
the cleanest (and several other popular radios among the dirtiest).

Look up Rob on YouTube for several excellent presentations.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & K3S Options Last Time Buy Update (12/02/2022)

2023-04-15 Thread Steve Zabarnick
Now that I have installed the recently received KSYN3A upgrade in my K3, I
am wondering what improvements to expect? I have seen test data on this
list showing improved transmit performance and anecdotal reports on
improved receive performance. In an initial quick listening session on cw
and FT8, I don't hear any dramatic changes in receive performance.

The KSYN3A upgrade is a significant investment (over $400 when including
shipping and tax) and will likely increase the resale value of the radio
somewhat, but as a casual operator should I expect to experience any
noticeable performance improvements?

Re: [Elecraft] Regarding KX3 with KPA1500.

2023-03-12 Thread Steve L
Recently I ran across several video presentations by Rob Sherwood NC0B,
regarding today’s (and yesterday’s) transceivers. To my surprise, he sifts his
focus from receiver performance testing (for which he is famous for) to
transmitter cleanliness. He gives a number of real examples of the mess output
by some of today’s top transceivers and amplifiers as well as the RF mess
created by amplifying marginal QRP radios by certain amplifiers.

I had not considered this before when thinking about the purchase of a
new-to-me synthesized radio - and there are some significant and surprising
differences!

Definitely worth a watch on the subject:

There are a couple of interesting articles here that discuss the design,
construction and use of filters between transmitter and amplifier designed to
prevent the amplification of the “junk” - unwanted harmonics and phase noise
from the transmitter:

https://kitsandparts.com/W3NQN_filter.php

I've seen several QST reviews recently with lab notes to the effect “not
recommended for use with an amplifier” because of the uncleanliness of the
transmitted signal. This is an issue of increasing concern given some of the
dirty signals we’ve all heard on the air.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & K3S Options Last Time Buy Update (12/02/2022)

2023-02-02 Thread Steve Zabarnick
It has been over 8 weeks since Eric announced that most of the long delayed
K3 options would be available in 6 to 8 weeks, and "should ship close to
these dates ranges if there are no new
parts issues or surprise manufacturing delays."

I have been patiently waiting for the upgraded synthesizer for my K3 and
made a 50% payment two years ago.

Any update on this? It would be nice to have some info on whether these
upgrades are being delayed once again or about to ship as promised.

[Elecraft] WANTED - P3 Panadaptor

2023-01-12 Thread Steve Ireland

G’day

I am interested in purchasing an Elecraft P3, in very good condition. It would
be nice if it came with a modulation monitor, SVGA and associated cables but is
not vital.
Apparently only a few P3 were sold in Australia. After searching here for a
year or so, I am taking my search global. 

For those in the US, note I have a US address to which the P3 can be sent!
Payment can be done via PayPal or direct transfer.

You can check me out at qrz.com.

Thank you!

Vy 73

Steve, VK6VZ (also G3ZZD)

Re: [Elecraft] Running high power

2022-11-24 Thread Steve Hall
Certainly as you increase power you are more likely to cause undesirable
effects in the home. Now I am going to make a generalization that I have
found true. The antenna type makes a significant difference in
interference. Unbalanced antennas introduce more RF into the home as
opposed to balanced antennas. An end-fed or off-center fed causes far more
problems than a dipole or inverted Vee. I have proven this to myself over
and over.

[Elecraft] searching for K3 Manual with hyperlinked pages in the Table of Contents

Frankly I'm surprised, but the K3 manual available online doesn't have
hyperlinks for the page numbers in the TOC. Is there a version available
somewhere with hyperlinked page numbers? Usually this is caused by not saving
the PDF with the correct options. If there isn't one, then I encourage Elecraft
support to consider creating one.

[Elecraft] K4 eHam reviews

2022-05-08 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
There are now well over 700 K4s in deserving hands. I was surprised to see so
few reviews of it on eHam.

> <https://www.eham.net/reviews/view-product?id=14974=1=10>
My review? I've had my K4D for just a very short time but I do plan to post a
review once I can force myself to stop operating it.

When I first got my K3 I would sometimes think "I wish it did XYZ." Only to
discover that it did. And more than once. With the K4 I'm finding things I
hadn't even thought of. A superb job. I'm looking forward to the new features
in future software releases.

So if you can make the time to post a review on eHam, I'm sure Team Elecraft
will appreciate it.

exclusively including K3/K3s/K4/KX3/KAT500/KPA500/KPA1500. I have never
had to return any of the gear for service. As far as "support the K3 and

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Service

2022-04-21 Thread Steve Masticola via Elecraft
Tim N9PUZ has an excellent point. Manufacturers of any long-lived electronic
equipment have a neverending battle with component obsolescence. Say an FPGA
goes end-of-life and there is no pin-compatible part. This is a problem that I
have had professional experience with -- and which AFAIK has no good solution
without taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in engineering costs. In
another instance, a jellybean processor was declared end-of-life and the entire
product line (dozens of products) had to be redesigned to keep it
manufacturable. I doubt that Elecraft (or Flex, for that matter) has the funds
for a lot of that sort of workaround.
It's possible to take some engineering measures against component obsolescence,
e.g. to design with multiple-source components.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 gain jumping on 160

2022-04-06 Thread Steve Masticola via Elecraft
Has anyone else seen the kind of gain jumping on 160 shown here?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjfksHwLz9w
The exciter is a K3, and I generated the drive signal by putting it into TUNE
mode. The KPA1500 is feeding directly into a dummy load, so the antenna, etc.
is not the cause.
I believe I heard about a "160 gain reduction mod" to correct this problem, but
I can't recall where I saw it.

Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram for MAC?

2022-02-21 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
CocoaModem is an excellent program. But it's 32 bit so it won't work after Mac
OS 10.14.6 (Mojave). All Mac OS after that require 64 bit applications. The
developer hasn't supported it for years but the code is free and available for
anyone having the skill to update it to 64 bit.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 wattmeter adjustment

2022-02-06 Thread Steve Masticola via Elecraft
If you dig into the QST reviews, you'll find out that the LP100 did not quite
meet its spec of 5% accuracy on all bands at all power levels and modes. But
then, neither did the LP500 nor the W2.
The old Array Solutions Powermaster II came closer than any of those three. it
was within 5% everywhere except at 5 watts CW at 50 MHz.

http://www.telepostinc.com/Telepost.pdf
http://www.telepostinc.com/LP-500_QST_review.pdf
The W2 was reviewed in the July 2010 QST.
The Array Solutions Powermaster (not the II) was reviewed in the January 2006
QST.
