Re: [Elecraft] [SECC] Mosley TH-3jr Weirdness

2011-07-28 Thread Timothy Raymer
Rich,

Wrap the ends of the wire (Actually Coax Center Conductor) with Electrical
tape. As antenna hangs in the heat and cold and does the antenna thing, the
insulation will migrate, leaving a small stub of copper conductor sticking out.
And it is possible to get arcs off of it if you don't insulate it.

Also, there is some special goop that you coat the aluminum with after you
brighten up the joints. I think you can use Penetrox or NoAlOx, but the folks
on the Elecraft list can better enlighten you.

Also, the folks at Mosley can enlighten you with more information:

Anderson does make a retention clip that snaps into the alignment holes that

John,

If one has to tape them together, the most likely problem is that they
were not assembled correctly. Properly assembled APPs are very good and
have an adequate amount of pullout resistance. The specification is 25
lbf - so yes, they will not withstand a 25 pound pull force, but that is
quite substantial - at anything below that they should stay together. I
have never had any problem with them, and I use them on all my DC
connections.

Re: [Elecraft] 8 AWG adapter

2009-02-16 Thread Timothy Raymer
I got mine when Tom, N0SS, did a bulk order for the club. I believe WMR does
stock them. 261G2 is the contact P/N they list on their web site. Actually
rated for only 10 gauge wire.

If you have conventional soft-drawn copper 8 AWG wire, you might be able to get
them to crimp. I ran into trouble with some specialized 10 AWG wire for stereo
installations. Copper was lots of fine wires, and a harder draw. It wouldn't
compress enough, and the cast die from the WMR crimp tool didn't like it.

If it is conventional 8AWG wire, it probably will fit in
the 45A crimps for the Anderson Power Pole Connectors.
Those same contacts fit in the enclosures that fit our
Elecraft PP. Just be cautious when crimping it down. If
you have access to the Anderson Die Crimp tool rather than
the West Mountain Combo, I would recommend using that one.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ( or K2 ) with a Kenwood SM230 station monitor

2008-08-02 Thread Timothy Raymer
Keith,

I know Tom, N0SS, has has an SM-230 in line for quite some time. Far predates
his K2, but is a useful tool. Especially useful if you are also making your
electrons taller with an Amplifier.

The SM-230 lets you monitor your output in a Voltage vs. time domain: It is a
specialized Oscilloscope. The Kx is pretty good about not making ugly
electrons, but the amplifier you drive over the edge could.

The other thing I remember about the SM-230 and Tom's station is that it
induced some strange SWR issues by the time we got up to 28Mhz. Combination of
lengths of coax, impedance of the unit itself, and a few other oddities caused
a bit of a problem for a contest a few years ago. Just keep in mind when you
put it in line you may need to shorten or lengthen the coax runs a bit to get
things happy.

Good luck, and enjoy the SM-230.

Does anyone have experience using the if output of the K3 into a Kenwood
SM 230 station monitor please ?
Or using a K2 in the same scenario?
Its just that I have the chance to acquire one at a good price and as I
have the LP Pan from Larry I was wondering if the SM 230 would be a
useful asset for either of my K2's or my K3.
Thanks guys

Re: [Elecraft] K3, 15 Pin Acc Cables - Commercially Made

2008-04-10 Thread Timothy Raymer
Don,

One caveat to this: VGA cables are normally wired as a series of coaxial
cables. So while you may have pin continuity, that continuity may be on a
shield of RG-174/U coax buried in the jacket of a larger cable.

I have found high density 15 pin connectors and soldered to them before. It is
not fun. But in that application, it was the only way to get the correct
connections, the correct wire type, and so on, connected to the device.

Don Nesbitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] 04/10/2008 11:36
I've found two (2) ready made cables that may be of interest to K3 owners
when using the ACC Socket. The ACC socket is referred to on page 18 of my
manual as AUX I/O with the caution that this is NOT a VGA video connector!
Well, it sure looks like a VGA connector but alas, no video output from the
K3 - shucks!

For those who just don't want to fabricate a cable, most commercially
available VGA cables do not include the #9 pin and for some that do, the pin
is not connected to anything. Poo!

Fully connected commercial cables found!

The first is a VGA Splitter Cable (Y cable) with one male and 2 female
ends. It is offered by Cables Unlimited (www.cablesunlimited.com) and is
their part number PCM-2250. Search this part number on their site. It is
listed on their site for $14.99. All 15 pins are present and connected.

This Y cable is carried by my local Microcenter (www.microcenter.com) and
is their part number 028126. I bought it for $9.95. You can see it at:

http://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.phtml?keyword=028126submit
.x=17submit.y=12

The second cable is a Fully-Wired Straight Thru, HD15MM cable with all
15 pins present and connected. The one I bought is a 3 foot Male to Male
(although it is also available in other configurations) - no snickering!

It is made by QVS (www.qvs.com) and is their part number CC388B-03. You can
search this part number on their site. I don't believe that QVS sells
directly to consumers but you can probably find their products at most
computer stores.

Again, I found it at my local Microcenter. It is their part number 810150.
I bought it for $14.99. You can see it at:

http://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.phtml?keyword=810150submit
.x=15submit.y=9

I've checked each of these cables and they do indeed have all 15 pins
connected - at least the one's I bought do (caveat filed just in case they
change their manufacturing process)!

I don't have any financial interest in any of the above and, as usual, YMMV.

so
you can use it with them. The binocular vision and freedom from having
to

If you have binocular vision (both eyes work together and almost equal

corrected vision) I think you'll find an Optivisor to be superior to
the
Mag Lamps. It is a headband with lenses that can be lowered over your

current eyeglasses. If you get about an 8 working distance, you can
solder and see the smallest of solder bridges. Its also fairly
comfortable.
Just google optivisor, they have some off brand copies for about $20.
