Re: [Elecraft] KX3 batteries

2021-07-02 Thread Gwen Patton
Unfortunately, like the Candle Stower, the Power Pot is no longer
available. There's a knockoff on Amazon that comes with a gas stove and a
small box wood stove, but I wouldn't trust it. It's got that typica "it
comes in a set" pricing that's probably twice what the pieces would cost if
purchased separately.

It looks like thermoelectric sources aren't good sellers. I'm pretty sure
that's because they're perceived as dedicated electrical generators, and
they're not. They make electricity from a side effect, and not a very
efficient one at that. The only reason to use one is to make use of the
waste heat from heating water for hot drinks or dehydrated food, which you
have to heat water for anyway. It's temperature *differential* that these
things run off anyway, and people don't get that. It's not a heat-engine
like a gas generator, or even a fuel cell, would be. It's highest
efficiency is when the water in the pot is coldest, not when it's hottest.
The benefit of using the hot water to make food or drink is that in order
to generate electricity best, you need to get rid of the hot water and put
in fresh cold water...so you might as well put the hot water to a good use
that doesn't waste all that energy. I don't use my Candle Stower when the
weather is hot, because that's when I'm least likely to want to have hot
coffee, and would probably rather drink the cold water to cool myself, than
pour it into a pot to heat it up. But in the Fall, or early Winter, sure!

This is why I researched the use of consumer-grade USB PD/QC power banks
for field use. They're lighter than other batteries, less bulky, more
durable, and usually cheaper. They only require the addition of a $10
trigger cable to run a 12V radio, and they are multitaskers, able to charge
your other USB devices as well. I love Bioennos and Talentcells, but I'd
rather carry a 20Ah PD power bank than my 12Ah LiFePO4 12v Talentcell. Out
of the box, my PD power bank can plug right into my phone, my watch, my
tablet, my Baofeng T1 HT, and the 3 flashlights I typically carry. Add the
trigger cable, and it can power my QRP rigs as well. To do that with my
12Ah Talentcell, I'd have to add a bunch of additional circuitry, and the
Talentcell is already at least 2X and often 3X the cost of that PD power
bank. And the power bank has more juice.

But I can also easily charge the USB bank with a USB solar panel. I'd need
an additional charge controller to do that with the Talentcell, even if I
could do it with the same panel, which I probably can't. The solar panel I
have is a folding one with dedicated USB out. There's no place to attach a
12v charge controller to it to charge the Talentcell. The USB bank doesn't
care. Run the cable to the microUSB in or the USB-C in, and it's happy to
sit and charge.

The only reason I mentioned the Thermoelectric option is because I already
have it. It may not be the best option, but it's an option I have.

Thanks, Walter. I hadn't known about the Power Pot. I have a Candle Stower,
which does work, albeit slowly. I don't own a Biolite stove, myself, it's
just one of the only other thermoelectric gadgets I knew about.

Unfortunately, it was a Kickstarter, and they're gone now. But you can see
if there are any "Candle Stower" units for sale used. The original product
was the "Flame Stower", by

You'd do better with one of their competitors, BioLite.
https://www.bioliteenergy.com/

They have various stoves, fire pits, and the like, some with thermoelectric
USB power output.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 batteries

2021-07-02 Thread Walter Underwood
If that is the Biolite stove/charger, it isn’t a good stove or a good charger.
Detailed review here, the conclusion is:

"If you want to cook with wood in the backcountry, get yourself a decent wood
stove or make your own. If you’re looking for a way to recharge USB enabled
devices, I’d recommend you use batteries or a rechargeable power brick instead
of the BioLite wood burning CampStove. This product is a gimmick that will be
shelved in your basement after a single outing."

https://sectionhiker.com/biolite-campstove-the-substance-beyond-the-hype/

On the other hand, the PowerPot appears to actually work, and could be used
with a good wood stove (SoloStove) or a camp stove. Here is the conclusion from
that review (same reviewer):

"I’m impressed with the PowerPot. Quite impressed. This is one of the most
efficient power generating options available today for backpackers and campers
who are off-the-grid for extended periods of time but need electricity to
recharge battery-powered devices. If you’re using a solar charger/battery pack
combo like the PowerMonkey Extreme (16 ounces) or the Goal Zero Guide 10 Plus
Solar Kit (19 ounces) for backpacking adventures, you should take a look at
using the PowerPot instead. It’s a lighter weight solution (14.1 ounces) that
is seasonally and weather independent. Now if they’d only come out with a still
lighter and smaller UL version."

LiFePO4s will stay at high enough voltage for most of the discharge cycle
to keep the KX3 above 15W. 9Ah will run it a long time.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 batteries

2019-06-28 Thread Chris Waldrup
Will the Bioenno batteries have enough terminal voltage to get the 15W?
I'm looking at a 9Ah unit and if so will stop by Gigaparts on the way home from
work today and pick one up.

That may be, though the discharge curves on the data sheets seem very similar.
Note that the two data sheets use different discharge rates, like 2000 mAh vs
2500 mAh. They both have the same specs for "Internal Impedance (after
discharge to E.V.=1.0V)”: Approx. 25mΩ(at 1KHz). I have to admit that I have no

I think Eneloop Pro have a higher internal resistance than the regular
Eneloop. In my experience, using both of them sequentially, the KX3 went
more quickly to the enforced 5 watt maximum output with the Eneloop Pro
cells compared to the standard Eneloop, despite the higher ultimate
capacity of the Eneloop Pro. But, YMMV!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 batteries

2019-06-24 Thread Mark Goldberg
I've brought the 3 Ah ones on aircraft multiple times and had no issues. I
brought a copy of the UN safety certification that I got from the battery
company but have never been asked for it.

The batteries did save me from having my bag checked once though. I put my
bag in the overhead. Someone else came by and moved my bag trying to get
theirs in the overhead and the overhead would not close. The flight
attendant, not knowing what happened wanted to check my bag. I stated it
had lithium batteries in it and she checked the bag belonging to the person
that moved my bag. I didn't have to argue at all. Karma!

LiFePO4 batteries are also safer than other Lithiums, but they seem to be
treated the same by the airlines and shipping companies.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 batteries

2019-06-24 Thread Eric - Gmail
The FAA rules on taking batteries on airplanes can be found in the
document "Batteries Carried by Airline Passengers: Frequently Asked
Questions" at
www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ash/ash_programs/hazmat/passenger_info/media/Airline_passengers_and_batteries.pdf

"Lithium ion batteries (a.k.a.: rechargeable lithium, lithium polymer,
LIPO, secondary lithium). Passengers may carry all
consumer-sized lithium ion batteries (up to 100 watt hours per battery).
This size covers AA, AAA, cell phone, PDA, camera,
camcorder, handheld game, tablet, portable drill, and standard laptop
computer batteries. The watt hours (Wh) rating is marked
on newer lithium ion batteries and is explained in #3 below. External
chargers are also considered to be a battery.
With airline approval, devices can contain larger lithium ion batteries
(101-160 watt hours per battery), but spares of this size are
limited to two batteries in carry-on baggage only. This size covers the
largest aftermarket extended-life laptop batteries and
most lithium ion batteries for professional-grade audio/visual
equipment."

Last month, I took a KX3 to Sint Maarten (PJ7). My battery was a Bioenno
6AH, equivalent to 72 watt hours. It worked like a charm!

You need to check with your airline, as some -- but not all -- airlines
will allow you to take a battery as large as 160Wh. The larger Bioenno's
(9AH and up) are over 100 Wh

Bioenno has listings on their website of recommended batteries for most
commonly available rigs, based on your duty cycle.

Yes. This ham-friendly company sells a wide range of LiFePO4 batteries.
Charge before you leave home (all Li batteries require a charger
designed for their specific chemistry, voltage, and capacity), connect
to your KX2/3 external power jack. Choose the capacity/weight that
suits

 your planned use.

$50 will get you 3Ah that weighs 13 oz; add $15 for the charger. A 6Ah
battery goes for $80, approximately twice the weight. I paid about $195
 for a 20Ah battery that weighs 5.4#, +$20 for a faster charger.

Right, Eneloop Pro get 500 cycles instead of 2000 for regular Eneloop. But I’m

If that charge cycle theory floating around were true, an average car
battery wouldn't make it three years in a commuter vehicle.
Not sure I buy into that as my plain old (cheap) #24 car batteries I use
with a solar charger typically give me over 10 years of service.

I would guess that max # of charge cycles never comes into play in most Ham
Radio related battery failures. It is more than likely that it is simply
age or abuse. Over the years I doubt if 5% of my battery failures were due
to exceeding the number of charge cycles.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Batteries - rechargeable AA's

2012-10-22 Thread Steve KC8QVO
Thanks for the info on the batteries. I went through some of the ones I have
and the last batch I got are Sanyos (ordered online) and they say Japan on
them. I may just charge these up and see how they work, I think they are
around 2 years old (I used them in my camera and HT before).

On a side note,

Instead of making an external battery case... I was thinking of using the
ones inside the rig. Has anyone tapped in to the wires for these and run an
external plug for a charger? Is there anything I have to be careful with?

I have a Micro M+ solar charge controller that I use with my SLA and was
thinking of running a wire from the batter cases, through the 2m antenna
port (plug right now), and put a Power Pole on the end. The controller has
diodes in it so the current only goes one way.

Another thought is my panel is made out of some Powerfilm panels (10 5omA
strips). Last time I was out on the trials I strapped the panel to my pack.
It wasn't in direct sunlight, but it was working while I was hiking. Now,
how about one of those gyroscope mounts that tracks the sun? That might make
my solar charging more efficient on the go HI.

They're working well for me in light duty so far.

Steve, the advice I got, a combination of list advice and internet
reviews, is to go with the low self-discharge NiMH made in Japan, and
the Sanyo Eneloop seem to have many followers, with the top of that line
the Sanyo Eneloop XX batteries. Advice was to stay away from the
 Chinese products as too variable.

I could not find XXs locally, and settled for the Batteries Plus
Japanese NiMH batteries this week. No reference to discharge. I may
regret that. Will buy a set of the XXs when I can. Too early for reviews.

What recommendations on NiMh AA cells do you all have that I can source
locally? I have bought some batteries that have been decent and some that
are terrible over the years, the best ones I found were at Radio Shack. What
others have you had good luck with? I'd rather stay away from Walmart and

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Batteries - rechargeable AA's

2012-10-22 Thread Steve KC8QVO
Well I put my AA batteries inside and I ran my wire out the 2m antenna port
hole. We'll see how it works. I have the batteries cycling right now - 3
cycles so tomorrow they should be good. The next step - seeing how well they
hold up. This might have to wait for the trail unfortunately. I am real
short on time between work and getting ready for my trip when I get home.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Batteries - rechargeable AA's

2012-10-21 Thread Gary
I've been following the KX3 battery threads from a distance since the
beginning and would like to offer my own suggestion. Hopefully I'm not
duplicating previous info.

I have several portable transceivers with AA battery cases. My current
battery choice for most of them is the Sanyo 2700mAh AA. I have a couple
dozen in daily use and have been very satisfied with them overall. In some
radios they don't perform well but in most I've used they work very well.
I've been purchasing them from http://www.batteriesamerica.com and
charging/cycling them with a Powerex MH-C9000 charger/analyzer. If anyone
has already tried these in a KX3 please let me know how it worked out.

By the way, http://www.batteriesamerica.com has the eneloop XX batteries
as well.
73,
Gary
