[expert]UT on LM8.1 with No Sound
I tried running my UT without the xserver having the module glx enabled. No success getting my sound to work that way, neither. I had to change the graphic renderer to SDLSoftDrv.SDLSoftwareRenderDevice in order for it to work. The other two graphical options complained about not having the glx extensions. I still received no sound after switching it from ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem to the Audio.AudioGenericSubsystem. I created a ~/.openalrc file and put define native-use-select #f. Still no effect. Did you upgrade gcc? That is important to have upgraded with your rpm
packager. You might have to recompile your rpm packager to use your
current gcc to get rid of that error. My $.02

An install floppy is good if you know how you want to install stuff (I
know I sound childish but bare with me). There are six different types
on images used to create an install disk. a harddrive image (hd.img), a
cdrom image (cdrom.img), a network image (network.img), there are two
images that I don't know their function but they are there (other.img
and blank.img), and a pcmcia image (pcmcia.img). You can find these
install images on a ftp mandrake image branch site (ie.
ftp://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake-devel/cooker/images/
or
ftp://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/i586/images/)
If you want a LM8beta install go to the development or cooker branches
but if you want a LM7.2 install, go to a regular mandrake/i586 branch of
a close ftp mirror site and type this command in:

create the install floppy from a *nix with this command;

I used to use ESIX SVR4 before I moved (most of the time) to Linux. I
used the following ploy many a time when I was learning the ropes. Many
Man pages do have examples if you look for them ( mkisofs is an example)
if on SVR4 in Xterm all I used to do was list the man page that I wanted
and then kill the man app which on that system did not clear the screen
but left you with the part of the man page you needed I could then just
copy the command line to the command prompt and run it. This taught me
not only the command but the general syntax of the Bourne shell; of
course to do this in X is even easier just open two terminals and you
can cut and paste.
If it was a "Manual Page" standard to have the most commonly used
command line parameters for the program in the 2 or 3 examples then
there would be no problem. One could even have a man page of most
commonly used syntaxes.
The reality is though, that Linux/UNIX is a powerful and complex
operating system with many tools that can work alone or in combination
with each other and to get the best out of it requires of necessity a
full understand of why it is the way it is. To many that subscribe to
this list it is a thing of beauty and elegance but to the average
Windows user who wants to change to another OS it can be an absolute
nightmare (just read some of the "newbie" list).
There is a simple answer to this and that is to make the distros less
complex. What pray is the point of having five different desktops
installed on a system. Here's a very simple reason why it's a bad plan.
If I am running Windows as an ignorant user and find something I don't
know how to do I can ring up my friend Marcia down the road and ask
"have you managed to do this yet?" if she hasn't I ring my friend John
in the next town and low and behold he's done it and talks me through
the procedure on his screen. I'm sure you see the point.
The real beauty of a free OS implemented in this way is that once people
become proficient and used to the basic operation of the system they can
go to any number of websites and download a more sophisticated desktop,
application or whatever when they desire. I believe that Linux will not
succeed until some steps are taken to limit it's diversity.

Blackbox rules! I like how that it can support all the "others" while
being lightweight and functional. Might be an "edge" too light for the
casual MS , KDE, and Gnome users but my cup of tea, nonetheless. I
personally, am confused by the complexity of KDE and Gnome as a whole
but I understand their strong point. I just wish that there was a
"magical" way to make the two "interchangeable" down to the programming
level.

it. It includes such files:
/etc/crontab
/etc/webmin/miniserv.conf
/etc/X11/fs/config
and a few others.
I tried to figure out how to correct them and clicked on Do IT to bring
the system back in harmony. I fist went into Linuxconf Miscellaneous
services (or is it Control). The time/date was correct but I accepted it
and "did it." I figured this would solve the problem, rebooted, but the
errors persist. I also looked at the files. I see nothing in them that
has a date, wrong or otherwise. I would like to correct these errors. I
hope this is a piece of cake. I am too exhausted from the double
installation of Linux and Windows to think clearly or want to even look
at it. Is this, may I ask, a simple configuration problem. Can you
suggest how I can solve this.
Otherwise, the installation and ADSL are working perfectly in both
Windows and Linux. Looking forward to finishing this ordeal soon as soon
as I (and you) get some sleep and rest.

Are you familiar with the "touch" command?
Touch, simply updates the date and time of the files that I "touch". The
command is simply implemented this way:
touch /boot/straps
since you have to change the dates on a "privileged" account, become
"root" and do the following:
su root
touch /etc/crontab
or
su -c "touch /etc/crontab"

I'm glad that you have written in to tell us about this. I mean on the
fact that I'm not the only one having problems trying to install linux
to that type of system! I am actually trying to install the "beta"
softwares to Compaq's 5000 series, as well (LM8beta1, LM8beta2 is next).

Try also blackbox if you have it installed. If there is nothing wrong in
that area as well, you may have to reinstall kde2.1 onto your system
because something is a muck. I get problems all the time with my
LM8beta2 and found just reinstalling fixes things. $.02

[expert] Trouble Compiling 2.4.2 kernel
I am running LM8.0beta2 with kernel 2.4.2-15mdk and I get depmod errors
when I'm trying to "make dep". What am I missing? Am I doing something
wrong? I have had this problem with depmod errors since 2.4.2 first
reared it's ugly head for the mdk.arch.rpm distribution. I would do a
make mrproper but that is how I lost my kernel last time. Stupid me had
only made and used one kernel. I am ready this time. I have a couple but
I want to do it right this time. TIA.

Bill, you have to be physically at that machine AND you have to NOT have
the CMOS activate the password option or the partition must not be
encryted. There is all types of ways to secure your machine. Chances are
better than none that this individual in question has their system set
up as a "default" installation.
Everyone knows that unless you buy something that guarantees security
right out of the box, more than likely you will have to tweak the
settings to get it that way yourself.

I suspect your problem is that you are using different refresh rates

Yes, I had problems using the mandrake source for any 2.4.1 src packages
above 3mdk. I decided to look into the exit status and find where it
chokes. The lm_sensors-2.5.5 is what was my problem. I looked into the
commands and it would say that "bison" (command) was not found. I did a
rpm query for bison and discovered that I didnt' have it, so I
downloaded it and reran the compile. Same place different command. This
time "flex" was not there. Of course, I didn't have that so I downloaded
it and installed it and ran the compile again. Hopefully, it will run
all the way through but I am certain that no matter the dependency, I
will get the Mandrake kernel source to once again compile on my machine.
Same area of the kernel, I find that I also need Yacc. Got it next?...

Sounds like you had the "stock" LM7.1. What I mean by that is it was in
LM7.1 in the upgrade where gcc merged with egcs into one. LM7.2 should
use the new gcc2.95 or higher (if you upgraded). That is why you are
having your current problems. Your StarOffice 5.2 was statically linked
to the old binaries. You will most likely have to reinstall StarOffice
5.2.

Now to me, this indicates dicked up code. It has a problem with the number
of arguments in the code, not with something on my system.
Does anyone have a functional driver, PCMCIA, built for 2.2.17, perhaps? If
so, please send. The source is a pain in the ass (I can build a kernel,
XFree, kde, etc, but this little mess will not build and I can't get into the
quicknet lists because their instructions are wrong - what I have here is a
wasted $170 until the damn driver gets built).

Yes, I have did and done Cooker source RPMs for kernels for over six
months! I highly recommend trying the new mdk 2.4.1 or 2.4.2 versions.

Yes, that is correct. That is exactly what it does. Now, what is it that
the Quicknet PhoneJack cards do that these services do not do but get
the same job done? Hmmm...
That is why we want to either hack (program) the current java codecs
that dialpad uses or net2phone and make a linux plugin to handle them.
As far as the hardware of Quicknet PhoneJack, I get the impression that
it is nothing more than a specialized sound card. If java is java, then
why did dialpad tell me in writing that they don't have support for it
yet? What type of sense does that make?! Anybody feeling me on this one?

net2phone acts in a similar fashion but in win32 code).
So it appears that you are either looking to make a proper dialpad interface

Quicknet Phonejack card hardware, allowing for the use of net2phone AND
dialpad servers (and perhaps any others that may exist?).
You are right on all points. And you totally understand the
functionality of the respective VoIP solutions. Now about that last
paragraph about what I'm really trying to do. I gather that Yahoo, more
than likely, has permission to use net2phone's hardware and I'm just
extending the same permission for dialpad. I really want only registered
users to access and use dialpad until they reply back to me to say
otherwise. The silly thing is this. dialpad uses php to serve up their
pages. That means, really one can not use your "phonebook" directory and
just click on a person and dial. You will have to do it all through the
dialpad plugin. The sad thing is... unregistered users can use the
service through this plugin When we succeed I will post my findings to
dialpad, but not before distributing at least the source to the list and
beyond. (Just in casegrin)I'm sending them my finding so that their
"technical" staff can implement it into their php script so that we can
use our phonebook entries from their website. Otherwise..
.. oh well! As long as we can use the service!

Don't do them one at a time. Do a "rpm -Fvh MySQL*" and you should be ok.

i can't seem to get the new packages to install or the old ones to

Don't do them one at a time. Do a "rpm -Fvh MySQL*" and you should be ok.

I personally avoid "forcing my way" on anything. It only leads to
heartache and pain later on. Just remove all the old packages that I had
showed in my prior posting and you can then
rpm -ivh MySQL*.rpm
or how ever you do it. just use "i" now and you should be fine.

Try this method:
rpm -e perl-Mysql-1.22_15-3mdk
rpm -e MySQL-bench-3.23.23-1mdk
rpm -e MySQL-3.23.23-1mdk
rpm -e MySQL-client
Do that in this order and you should be ok.

It seems to be available on other distributions and distributions for
the i386 architecture only. You can try compiling your perl from source,

You don't have to install the compiled libraries to your system but I
,personally, recommend it but, yet, again this is a personal choice. The
reason I say do this is that it will have all the files for perl in
/usr/src/RPM/BUILD directory under perl and you can "locate" the file
there. Thus, symlink and see if that works. I hope this help.

Huh? -Fvh means to freshen.. install if it exists. If you already
have MySQL installed and you do an -ivh, you will have two versions of
everything installed (which is not what you want).
Either use -F (freshen) or -U (upgrade). --force is to force the
install, not -F.
I meant for him to use rpm -ivh after he had deleted the old packages.

Sounds like an "opportunity" for the Mandrake folks. Why doesn't (can't)
Mandrake Update recognize this situation and drag in the necessary
supporting rpms. Still better, why can't the developers actually try the
rpms on a real live 7.2 system and thus avoid the problem for the
unsuspecting masses?

I have the exact same problems with php4 for mysql. I can not get it to
work neither. Like jumping rope, I was trying to find an oppurtunity to
jump in and mention this exact same problem! Everyone is so into the
KDE2.1beta updates and everything that almost anything else has been
ignored. Like I posted help for getting plex86 to work on my dual booted
computer. Not a single reply. I was going to give it one more day before
I went off else where for help. I even registered to plex86's mailing
list! I'm waiting on answer from them as well, but I had posted that
message finally about a few hours ago. I have my fingers crossed.

I know of, supposedly, http://www.dialpad.com having a solution. But if
you really want to get it to work. It would be advisable to get kernel
2.2.x, use IPChains, and use a browser like Netscape 4.73-4.75. It will
not work with Netscape 4.76/6, Mozilla .6/.7, and konquerer. You can
probably do with out the IPchains and use iptables which is what I'm
going to try as I have kernel 2.4.1 and full iptables support. I just
have to downgrade my browser as I have Netscape 4.76 and up.

As I think on this, would not dialing someone's phone from the internet
require a server somewhere that would take net traffic and route it to the
phone switch in a certain area? Say I want to call my parents on my PC.
Using the normal phone system, this is a longdistance call. To make the call
with my PC and have it be, essentially free, my phonecall would need to go to
a switch/router/server in my parent's state that would then redirect the
signal to a local phoneswitch (or some such), making my longdistance call
from my PC essentially a local call. Is this not how net2phone and dialpad
is done? Via a server through client software?
Yes, that is correct. That is exactly what it does. Now, what is it that
the Quicknet PhoneJack cards do that these services do not do but get
the same job done? Hmmm...
That is why we want to either hack (program) the current java codecs
that dialpad uses or net2phone and make a linux plugin to handle them.
As far as the hardware of Quicknet PhoneJack, I get the impression that
it is nothing more than a specialized sound card. If java is java, then
why did dialpad tell me in writing that they don't have support for it
yet? What type of sense does that make?! Anybody feeling me on this one?

Here I go again. Maybe my question is not getting through (the one
about, "What is this one doing that dialpad and net2phone are doing
differently to achieve the same objective: **Free Phone service through
the internet**")? I hope you know that what ever hardware can do, a
program can be made to "emulate" the same device? Example: winmodems.
Not good enough? winprinters. Need I go on? There may not currently be a
program in Linux but you may never know for sure until you ask.
Besides the creator of gphone created the program out of necessity and a
means to LEARN how to program! Remarkable! Same with the author of Licq
(except he had a comprehensible background in programming since he could
read!LOl). Anybody want to join me in making this a reality? I'm
currently fixing up my server. I am trying to fix a php4 bug at the
current moment, but as soon as I'm up... My backups had gotten destroyed
for my webserver. This wasn't known to me until after I had formatted
and repartitioned my drives. I had attempted to change the file system
to Reiserfs on kernel 2.4.0 without success. If anyone has succeeded
with 2.4.0 or 2.4.1 I would like to compare partitioning schema. I am
rebuilding all my files from scratch. I have five projects that address
the dialpad, vmware, and development period.

Yep, you've found your problem - the line "vga=788" requires
frame-buffer support in the kernel. I expect it should work for you if
you select 'VESA VGA graphics console' under frame-buffer support when
configuring your kernel, and leave the others unselected. No ideas about
your mail problem, sorry.

cross-platform plugin for dialpad. I will make sure that only registered
users can access the service, of course, but it appears that they have
their "detect" page automatically reject any thing not M$. I want to
appease the *nix, Mac, and Solaris community. It is just not right!

I'm glad to hear that everything is working for you. Yes, you could use the Mandrake Update for future upgrades but it will be light years before Mandrake catches up with you. LOL. Honestly, I have mentally monitored Mandrake's patterns as far as upgrades go. I noticed that Mandrake reputation isn't just in the ease of use of their distribution, but in the stability and security of their product. That is why you will always see a (RH) rpm way before mandrake releases a (mdk) rpm. But if you watch securityfocus.com, freezer-burn.com, linuxsecurity.com, and many others you will see most of the other distros painting the "box" with postings of exploits, breaches, and vulnerabilities of their respective packages. I personally discovered that it is easier to make a package than it is to debug to work acrosss myriad platforms and software promegations. If Mandrake ever catches up with you (This is not counting the development and cooker branches, mind you!), it is more than ok to download their packages. Cheers, -- Al

Open up XF86Config-4 with your favorite editor and go to the line pointing to your font path. unmark by putting # in front of the FontPath unix/:-1 like this # FontPath"unix/:-1" The cool thing about this hack is that it forces the drakfont (I think that is correct) to point to the new fonts directory (more than likely, it wrote over some application font path conf files). You can reboot and it will still work. After rebooting, you can remove the "#" comment from XF86Config-4. The other way, I haven't tried first but was irrelevant after doing the above option but I got this from a netscape forum. /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs stop /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start This has something to do with the X Font server (xfs) others and myself conjecture. Try this one first before the other one, as I am dying to know if that way really works. But if you look at the methods behind the two... they both target the X Font Server and do a disable-then-enable approach. Possible bug. Correction, the package that he is trying to install is rpm3 or less while his package manager is rpm 4. That particular package would only unpackage with a package manager of rpm 3.0.5 or less. I recommend getting the source for that package and compiling it that way. That is how you understand this ??: only packages with major numbers = 3 are supported by this version of RPM ^^^ so this rpm is only for = v3 packages, and package is v4.
