[Fink-devel] naive question: Why not have gcc within fink?
I've been watching in horror the correspondence regarding the new gcc version in Xcode 2.2 and its potential impact on a bunch of fortran programs I maintain, smug in my realization that sloth, once again, is its own reward (I still have 2.1). Since fink has its own fortran compilers, why not also have the rest of gcc and make and so on within fink? Wouldn't that help avoid the crises like the current one, and allow better regularization? A side benefit is that it might also allow one to skip an 800 MB+ download that is now required just to get gcc. I guess one would have to start with a binary install of the compiler, but that seems a small price to pay. Bill Scott --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the JBoss Inc. [Fink-devel] passwd entries
The entries for fink's own daemons have HOME=/dev/null and login-shell=/dev/null while Apple's standard seems to be HOME=/var/empty login-shell=/usr/bin/false. According to security advisories I've read, either shell is okay for user cannot log in, and neither one should be listed in /etc/shells, however Apple lists /usr/bin/false. Reading that discussion, one gets the impression they deliberately broke the compiler, without asking or telling anyone, not even their own documentation guys, and without really knowing what they are doing. For scipy, I don't see how this can be fixed. We are cleaning things up and executing stack was considered messy. Microsoft and Linux are headed in the same direction. [Fink-devel] lammpi 7.1.1 build problems
Has anyone tried updating lammpi from fink 10.4-transitional unstable to the newer 7.1.1 release source code? I am seeing the same thing that William Scott was. The fink packaging produces a lammpi for 7.1.1 which appears to compile and install fine but is unable to execute lamboot properly. I find that using the same fink devtools with the same lam 7.1.1 source and the same configure options, I can install a build of lam in /usr/local which works fine. So far I can't find anyway to coax the fink build of the same lammpi 7.1.1 release to work (regardless of whether I use SetCXX as g++-3.3 or g++-4.0). The only thing left that I can think of is to build and install the standalone lam source with exactly the same configure flags as fink uses but with /sw substituted with /usr/local/sw so I can do a careful file by file comparision of what fink has archived and what a standalone build has installed. It is a really weird problem. Jack --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the JBoss Inc. Get Certified Today Register for a JBoss Training Course. [Fink-devel] RE: lammpi 7.1.1 build problems
I don't understand why this build problem happens under fink but I believe I have identified the offending file. It appears that the breakage in the fink build of lam 7.1.1 originates in the liblam.0.0.0.dylib shared library. Oddly the fink built version shows... otool -L liblam.0.0.0.dylib liblam.0.0.0.dylib: /sw/lib/liblam.0.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 1.0.0) /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 88.1.2) /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 1.0.0) whereas the manually built version shows... liblam.0.0.0.dylib: /usr/local/lam-7.1.1/lib/liblam.0.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 1.0.0) /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 88.1.2) ...which is really strange since both builds should be using gcc 4.0. [Fink-devel] RE: lammpi 7.1.1 build problems
Oddly I see to see that when fink links liblam.0.0.0.dylib with gcc called as gcc-4.0, I have... gcc-4.0 -dynamiclib ${wl}-undefined ${wl}dynamic_lookup -o .libs/liblam.0.0.0.dylib ...etc whereas when I build lam 7.1.1 manually I end up with... gcc -dynamiclib ${wl}-flat_namespace ${wl}-undefined ${wl}suppress -o .libs/liblam.0.0.0.dylib ...etc which is very strange since the default compiler is set to gcc-4.0 in both cases. The first case produced the liblam.0.0.0.dylib which had the additional /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib linked in compared to the second case which didn't. Jack This is strange also because the libtool calls in both cases seem identical... /bin/sh ../../libtool --mode=link gcc-4.0 -O3 -Wl,-multiply_defined,suppress -L/sw/lib -o liblam.la -rpath /sw/lib -export-dynamic ../../share/args/liblamargs.la ../../share/boot/liblamboot.la ../../share/etc/liblametc.la ../../share/freq/liblamfreq.la ../../share/kreq/liblamkreq.la ../../share/libltdl/libltdlc.la ../../share/mpi/liblamextra.la ../../share/nreq/liblamnreq.la ../../share/rreq/liblamrreq.la ../../share/ssi/libssi_lam.la ../../share/threads/liblamthreads.la ../../share/trillium/liblamtrillium.la ../../share/tstdio/liblamtstdio.la /bin/sh ../../libtool --mode=link gcc -O3-Wl,-multiply_defined,suppress -o liblam.la -rpath /usr/local/lam-7.1.1/lib -export-dynamic ../../share/args/liblamargs.la ../../share/boot/liblamboot.la ../../share/etc/liblametc.la ../../share/freq/liblamfreq.la ../../share/kreq/liblamkreq.la ../../share/libltdl/libltdlc.la ../../share/mpi/liblamextra.la ../../share/nreq/liblamnreq.la ../../share/rreq/liblamrreq.la ../../share/ssi/libssi_lam.la ../../share/threads/liblamthreads.la ../../share/trillium/liblamtrillium.la ../../share/tstdio/liblamtstdio.la It is curious that they produce such different linkages. --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the JBoss Inc.
