[Fink-users] Bug in xfree86-4.2.0-12 or blackbox-rootless-0.62.1-1

2002-08-24 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka

Sometimes, when I have multiple windows, one of the windows will get
stuck in the display, and will show up no matter what program is in the
foreground or hidden in X or in MacOS.

The stuck window goes away when I finish/kill the Xserver.

I think the bug is in xfree86 (or in my mind) because windows get stuck in
windowmaker as well.

What fun.

Re: [Fink-users] How about a new approach?

2002-09-26 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka

I think you don't have much experience with *nix in general. A lot of free
software is ported to many different OSes, Solaris, all the flavors of
Linux, BSD, etc. Some programs remain firmly tied to one Linux distro,
etc, and you have to port them yourself.

Your idea, while interesting academically, would just be a good way of
making software run slower.

Good point, but it's a trade-off. Getting one app stable has got to be
an easier proposition than getting ALL of them stable.

I understand your point, but I think it's a more laudable goal to
work to port all this wonderful open source software (albeit
slowly) to run natively on the OS.

I agree that having native Darwin apps is necessary and even noble, but
using Xfree86 on Mac OS X isn't really native anyway and it doesn't
have to be an either/or type proposition. Anyway it's just a
thought. I would like it, just wanted to see what others thought.

[Fink-users] Blackbox question

2002-10-28 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka
I've been running blackbox and I get the sticky window problem where a
window gets stuck until I kill X. I decided to try blackbox-taskbar
instead of taskbar-rootless to see if I could minimize the sticky
window problem.

The weird thing is that blackbox-rootless gave me pop-up dialog boxes in
the taskbar (something that blackbox-taskbar should do, I thought) and
blackbox-taskbar has NO pop-up dialog boxes.

Is this correct?

  Perform the jaguar update:

and it still doesn't work, you need to do: sudo
  /sw/lib/fink/postinstall.pl then fink selfupdate-cvs

Thanks. I am starting to get the full picture now. When I run 'fink
selfupdate' yesterday it didn't update fink to 0.11 (it was still
0.10, I expected it would automatically bring itself o latest version)
so I did it manually just now and then I did 'fink selfupdate' yet
again to get the package list but I guess there is a problem with the
CVS tree because I get this:
  U 10.2/unstable/crypto/finkinfo/zssh-1.4-2.patch
  cvs update: in directory 10.2/unstable/main:

  U 10.2/unstable/main/.cvsignore
cvs [update aborted]: cannot open CVS/Entries.Log: No such file or
  directory

This needs to go in the FAQ, it happens a lot and I don't know why.

do this to reset your CVS entries:

 sudo find /sw/fink/ -type d -name 'CVS' -exec rm -rf {} \;
 fink selfupdate-cvs

It should be. You can check to make sure that /sw/bin/init.sh

Then you should check that you don't re-reset the PATH *after*
init.sh gets called in your login sequence... (and check to make

Re: [Fink-users] emacs21 weird behavior: solved

2002-11-22 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka
I thought about that as I posted using which, but I thought csh was the
default shell. Not that I checked, since I use tcsh.

I don't think that bash stores and hashes the available files, and I'm not
sure which environment variable it uses to check for paths. Sorry for the
confusion and I'm happy to hear it's working for you now.

On Fri, 22 Nov 2002, Viktor Haag wrote:

/usr/bin/emacs was the one got called. How 'which' in bash
   gets updated? any 'rehash' equivalent?

Bash doesn't have a 'which' builtin like csh does, and therefore
doesn't need a 'rehash'. When you use 'which' in bash, you're
 actually depending on another util.

Here's something that might be useful to know: fink's which
reports that it uses the environ's current $PATH to find the
executable you specify. However, the man page for /usr/bin/which
says that it looks instead in .cshrc and uses the PATH *there* to
 locate the file.

If this is the case, then perhaps you set PATH in your .cshrc
file, then 'source /sw/bin/init.csh' (which of course
 /usr/bin/which would ignore), and you're invoking /usr/bin/which
for some reason (like you don't have /sw/bin/which installed?).

/usr/bin/which then looks in .cshrc (even though its being
invoked by bash), and finds the malformed PATH, and *voila*: you
get the wrong location for a utility.

You might try testing this with another utility that you also
have in both the base install and in Fink...

Currently, the only thing you can download is the SDK, which appears to

The part with the actual display manager is still a broken link right

Trying to install the binaries via apt-get messed up the X11

Faq 8.12, I think. You didn't install the X11 SDK from the Xcode disk,

[Fink-users] compiling vim in unstable with XFree86 4.4

2004-04-29 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka
I've been building vim from cvs for several months now. vim in unstable
won't build with XFree86 4.4. The errors have been fixed in cvs for a
couple of months (I could track it down if anyone wants).

If you do a cvs checkout, you have to use a case-sensitive version
filesystem because of some problems in cvs. src/po/en_gb.po isn't
supposed to be in cvs and it interferes with src/po/en_GB.po. It can't
be deleted because of problems with CVS and I guess the admins still
haven't been able to fix it.

Am I doing something wrong when I configure DIA?

I see the same thing. You might have to go with printing to a
PostScript file and printing it via Preview.app from the Finder.

IIRC, dia still uses gtk-1. All the nice cupsiness happened with
gtk-2.10, which is really recent. You need to complain to upstream for
this one.

There is no error message from the commands you are showing that would
explain why make thinks it failed. Can you look a little further up in

I just edited the makefile and changed -current_version from 1.4.8.1 to

even after I got it to compile.

It may ba a missing dependency on gettext-tools. Do you have gettext-tools
installed? The build process uses /sw/bin/xgettext from that package when it
is available, and probably compiles additional things when not.

 gettext-tools are installed; /sw/bin/xgettext exists.

Alpine does not build with libgettext installed. There's a
buildconflicts with libgettext3-dev.

try that one?

it would highlight comments, variables, strings, you name it (I got
quite used to it!) Everything has changed with the new vim, it only
seems to highlight a few things, and even then doesn't switch off at
the end of comments (for example). i've had a bit of a look at the
help text but can't even really work out where to look for the problem.
Obviously this isn't perhaps the best forum for vim problems, so
my followup question is, can I go back to vim-6.3? I've still got the
tar archive (.bz2 zipped) in my /sw/src directory, but all the
obvious things (like fink install vim-6.3) don't seem to work.
Would really appreciate any help you guys can offer!

I was using this just fine for editing IDL code (extension .pro) and
it would highlight comments, variables, strings, you name it (I got
quite used to it!) Everything has changed with the new vim, it only
seems to highlight a few things, and even then doesn't switch off at
the end of comments (for example). i've had a bit of a look at the
help text but can't even really work out where to look for the problem.

This is the normal behavior when something requires a virtual package

You'd need the 10.4-universal SDK; though it might be better to figure
out which package wants it and verify whether it's really needed or not.

I believe this is a bug in the Qt packages in having fink installed
somewhere else and symlinked to /sw. I haven't worked out the best
 way to repair it yet.

Could you send me the file you get from:

  find /sw/sr/fink.build/*qt3* | gzip -9 qt3-filelist.txt

A workaround I used:
edit /sw/etc/fink.conf to point to the real directory
rebuild qt
put things back in /sw/etc/fink.conf

Note that this is preferable to emailing just the maintainer
directly, since most fink package maintainers do not have access to
all possible hardware and software configurations.

Please try to include the complete error message in your report.
This generally consists of a compiler line starting with e.g. gcc

To me, this looks like an error from a race condition rather than a
permissions issue, and by stopping the build you're allowing things to
 catch up.

What happens if you set the number of processors to 1 via fink
configure and try to rebuild (Source-rebuild) ghostscript? Does
 that work?

I was able to build it on 10.6 without any fink autotools installed, but it's
still not correct (and may not continue to work in the future), so I added
them as bdep and confirmed that it still builds correctly. And committed it.

I'm not going to complicate my system with Macports. I have to be able
 to do _reliable_ test builds.

And I don't advocate that our users mix Macports and Fink, either.

MacPorts are in /opt, Fink is in /sw. If you want then they have nothing in
common. I am sharing the source file archives between them (to save disk
space) and I can easily build X clients that either use Fink and X11 or
MacPorts. On Snow Leopard I easily build 32-bit executables with Fink and
 64-bit executables with MacPorts.

There is a C flag, -H, that helps to prove that no cross or mix-up
compilation happens and an LD flag, -Wl,-t, that proves that the proper
 shared libraries are used.

Not that this has anything to do with this PPC issue, the new X11 is now
in /opt.

Any ideas on how to stop ghostscript's printf conflicting with the system's

It looks like it's _supposed_ to be using the system's cups headers:

 $ fink show-deps ghostscript-esp

The following other packages (and their dependencies) must be installed:

However, the headers from Mountain Lion appear not to be compatible with
those from Lion and earlier, so the package needs to be updated.

also need an || exit 2 at the end of the TestScript command).

be compatible with the same .pinerc file on a networked home dir...

Maybe not the _full_ log, but how about the portion starting with

 configure: updating cache ../config.cache

I don't believe that's done by the time things bail.

I'll put the logs on http://www.i8u.org/~htodd/graphviz.log.zip
