Re: Cross-reference oddity in FM 9
Rene, You wrote: Schlomo, I think I'm missing something or doing it wrong. I'm attaching an updated Sample.FM. I changed the font family for Italic char tag to HelveticaNeueLT Std Cn, since that's the most similar font to Arial Narrow that I have installed on this PC. It shows fine in the variable definition, but when the variable is used in the heading, and then the heading text is xref'd via $paratext, it is still not picking up the angle. I don't understand why it works for you, but I'm not getting the desired result. Is it a bug in my FM file or something? Rebecca's clarification is correct -- you need a font where the italic variation is part of the font identity/name itself (i.e. Italic/Oblique appears in the Family field in the Character Designer). If you don't currently have such a font in your font list, it is possible to define one of the existing fonts like that through maker.ini. {Aside: It seems to me that either Adobe might want to consider adding another building block that does include the character formats applied to text for cross-references, so that writers have the choice of which standard to follow; or perhaps this is a limitation that doesn't exist in FM 10?} The behavior you see, as well as the workaround, apply to all versions of FrameMaker (including FM10). Notice that in the context of generated files, $paratext retains all character formatting if they are the result of a character tag (untagged font properties are not retained) -- so your Product Name variable will be displayed properly in the TOC without any change to its current definition. RE: FrameMaker 10 Crashes when I do a Find and Replace of a character format
Joseph Lorenzini wrote: If I do a find and replace of a character format across an entire book, Framemaker sucks up all the memory on my system and then crashes. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior. Steps to Reproduce 1. create a large book that contains several hundred pages and many framemaker files. Ideally, there should be 20 or so files in it. 2. through out the book, highlight text and then press ctrl+b. This applies a character format override of bold. 3. open a framemaker doc from the book. 4. place your cursor in some body text. 5. open the find dialog box. 6. Set find to character format. 7. In the find char format dialog box, press shift+F8. 8. In the find char format dialog box, press shift+F9. 9. in th find char format dialog box, set the weight to bold and then click the set button. 10. in the framemaker doc, find some text that has bold override applied to it and then apply a character format. 11. Use the copy special to copy the character format to your clipboard. 12. close all documents. 13. make sure the book is active. 14. in the find dialog box, set change to by pasting. 15. select the find button. I don't have FM10, but since I don't see any response on the list, I'll toss out some questions/comments that occurred to me: -- After step 7 (setting the dialog to As Is), why are you doing step 8 (setting it to the format at the cursor location)? -- In step 10, when you apply a character format, I assume you mean a defined char tag. Why are you applying it on top of a format override? You realize that you're adding the char tag formatting to the override, not replacing the override? (At least, that's the case if your char tag is properly defined, with non-relevant parameters set to As Is.) -- In step 11, you're copying *all* the formatting of the selected text, not the char tag itself. IOW, if you select some text that has the Emphasis char tag (defined as Italic + As Is) applied, and that text is in a blue 20-pt Futura heading, what you're copying to the clipboard (and pasting) is blue 20-pt Futura Italic. -- In step 12, why are you closing all docs? I suspect this is the nut of the crashing problem. Although earlier versions of FM, IIRC, display an error dialog when you don't have a cursor location. HTH! Richard G. RE: lost sideheads on import
Robert Lauriston wrote: I brought up a frame's properties in Body Pages view and Room for Side Heads was unchecked, so I checked it, and that fixed it throughout the document (single flow). Is that expected behavior when you change to a master page with side heads? Maybe. :-) Room for Sideheads is kind of a weird setting. It's a flow property, as you discovered, even though it's set in the Text Frame dialog. This sometimes trips up people who try to combine text frames without a side head area (such as for a title page or a two-column index) with body pages that have a side head area. At some point after getting the right master pages into your new template, did you do Format Page Layout Apply Master Pages? That should have updated the flow property of the body pages (unless your master pages are inconsistent regarding their side head settings, which can happen). Richard G. FrameMaker 8 pre-dates Windows 7 by quite a bit, and I'm not surprised that it's not compatible. But there is hope. After I was forcibly migrated to Win 7, FM 7.2 crashed hard whenever I drag-selected text. Now I'm more or less successfully running it by using the compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2 (more or less because this makes disk operations -- opening and saving files -- very slow). Other compatibility settings might work better for FM 8. A fair amount of experimenting may be required. To get started, go to your FM home folder, right-click FrameMaker.exe, and select Troubleshoot compatibility. You might also want to search the Adobe FM forums and FrameUsers.com for Windows 7 compatibility or variations of that to see if there are specific suggestions/hints. Richard G. RE: Conversion of .vsd to .png
Jburgdor wrote: Does anyone know of an automated method for doing drawing conversions from .vsd to .png? I suggest not doing that. Visio files are scalable vector graphics. PNG files are bitmap (raster) images, which exhibit all the limitations of bitmaps -- jaggies, poor quality when zoomed/scaled, etc. A much better option is converting them to PDF, which is also a scalable vector format. That's especially true if your intended destination is an FM document (which I'm assuming is the case since you posted to this list). I haven't used any third-party converters myself, since I have both Visio and Acrobat Pro, so I can't recommend one and don't know how or if they handle multi-page Visio files. When I use the Acrobat plug-in to save a multi-page Visio file as PDF, I get a multi-page PDF. When I import that by reference into FM, I'm prompted to select which page of the PDF to import. Very cool, very slick, totally bulletproof. In Google, search for batch convert visio files (sans quotes) for a number of options (try some variations of that search string too). You'll see that most are for converting to PDF (because that's the best choice for most purposes). But there are some options for other destination formats (PNG, JPEG, etc.) if you must. HTH! Re: FM -- MIF2Go -- Kindle?
Great one Jeremy! Thanks sooo much for the repost. One hint, if I might. I recently published a Kindle book after many hours of research. Setting the fonts doesn't do much because the Kindle user can set what they want it to be. I streamlined and focused on 2-3 headings that were proportionally larger than the body text. Don't know if that is useful and hope it saves someone the time I spent putzing with the stuff! Big hugs MamaRed On Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 4:28 PM, Jeremy H. Re: Cross-reference oddity in FM 9
Hi Rene Schlomo's the expert on this, but I think your alternative font has to be an oblique/italics font, not just any different font. In his example of Univers-Condensed Oblique, FM preserves the oblique format in xrefs because the font only has oblique glyphs. Your HelveticaNeueLT Std Cn has ordinary glyphs so FM uses them. I'm not sure I'm using the right terminology here but hopefully this makes sense anyway. cheers Rebecca Rene Stephenson rinn...@yahoo.com 21/02/12 10:59 Hi Schlomo, Thanks for responding: However, in the context of cross-references, $paratext ignores all character formatting present in the extracted paragraph text, except superscript, subscript and font family properties - which are retained only if implemented through a character tag. To preserve a property such as italic (or bold), you need to have a different font name for the required variation (even though visually it is the identical font); alternatively, use a different font. For example, I have Univers-Condensed Oblique in my font list; text tagged with a character format using this font preserves its italic property when it is cross-referenced. Some font families are installed this way by default. Schlomo, I think I'm missing something or doing it wrong. David, Ive seen the same thing when highlighting with a mouse with my installation of FM 8 on Win 7 64-bit. I dont recall ever having that problem in all the years I used FM 8 on Win XP. I dont think this really fixed it, but I did find that I was missing an update. I believe the latest version is 8.0p277. Make sure you have that. If you find a solution, please let us know. Re: Phantom character format override in FrameMaker 10
Hi Joseph, Do you use Conditional Text? The last time I checked (and the main reason I stopped using conditional text at my last company) Frame creates a character format override for every line of a praragraph that is conditionalized. It was a major pain for us, especially with multiple languages. We found it easier to nuke the conditions. I am constantly getting a hit on the paragraph where a text inset is inserted. If the paragraph is Body, then it does not find an override. If however the paragraph format is anchor, then it does find an override. I am at a loss as to why one paragraph format causes a character format override to be found while the other does not. I have verified that the text inset does NOT contain a character format override. Any ideas? Thanks, Joseph Lorenzini ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as bernyga...@rogers.com. F9 Keyboard Shortcut not working (FM10, WinXP)
In our department, a few of us have experienced temporary loss of the keyboard shortcut F9 (apply paragraph format) from time to time. As of this week, I have lost all use of it, even though I retain use of F8 (select character format). What gives? Is this a bug? How does one get F9 back? I searched through Adobe help, found no help (could not anticipate what they were thinking). Thank you. Re: FrameMaker 10 Crashes when I do a Find and Replace of a character format
Hi Richard, A framemaker engineer has reached out to me and we are currently in the process of troubleshooting the problem. If we end up identifying what the problem is and a workaround, I'll be sure to notify the list serve. Please keep in mind that the Character Format option in the find dialog box doesn't exist until FM 10. You can also search for paragraph and character format overrides which you could not do in previous releases. Finally, please be aware that this only seems reproducible with some extremely large books of mine that have been upgraded from FM 9. I can't reproduce this crash on a smaller book or a book created from scratch, in those other cases everything works as expected. In answer to your questions: 1) I am doing this because I first want to zero out all the formatting and then inherit a specific formatting from the body text. this ensures that i ONLY find text that is bolded and is body text and not finding bolded paragraphs that are bolded because of the paragraph format, such as H1 or H2. 2) I do not believe I am applying on top of the format override but rather replacing the format override with the char tag. When I did my testing in a single FM file, I tried this once on one piece of text that had the bold override applied to it. Prior to the the find and replace, I searched for character format overrides and the find mechanism flagged this text as having an override. After the find and replace occurred, I searched for character format overrides and the find mechanism did NOT flag this text as having an override 3)In the FM data model, my understanding is that part of a character format is the char tag. So when I do a copy special and copy the character format, I am getting the character format tag in addition to everything else associated with the character format. 4) I was doing a find and replace across the entire book. I do this all the time and when I do I don't have a document open. I've never had a problem before. In any case, I have experimented with the find and replace when all the docs are opened and the crash still occurs. Sincerely, Joe On Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 11:32 AM, Combs, Richard richard.co...@polycom.comwrote: I don't have FM10, but since I don't see any response on the list, I'll toss out some questions/comments that occurred to me: -- After step 7 (setting the dialog to As Is), why are you doing step 8 (setting it to the format at the cursor location)? -- In step 10, when you apply a character format, I assume you mean a defined char tag. Re: lost sideheads on import
Yeah, I did use Apply Master Pages, seemed like it didn't update the Room for Sideheads setting. I set it manually for one text frame on a body page and the whole flow was updated. I guess the trick is, if I want to switch between templates by importing formats and running Apply Master Pages, I should check Room for Sideheads in the sidehead-free template. single-sourcing PDF and text with layout?
I've inherited a couple of docs in FrameMaker that have for some years been delivered in both PDF and plain text and am obliged to continue doing that. As far as I can see from the source, working directories, and so on, the PDF was generated from FrameMaker, and the text version was maintained by making the same changes twice. Any suggestions on single-sourcing the text output? People are used to the text being pretty readable, with headings in caps, indents using leading spaces, bullets using o, and so on, so FM's native save as text is not acceptable. Best solution I've found so far is MIF2Go RTF Word Save As Text with Layout (*.ans). That's kludgy but close enough that I could probably make it work by tweaking the FM template and/or MIF2Go options and maybe doing some post-processing with a script. Acrobat's save as Accessible Text also seems promising but not as close to what I need as the above. Once upon a time there was FM2A for precisely this sort of task. What's the latest version of FM it will work with? http://www.fsatools.com/oldies.html Any other suggestions? ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. FrameMaker 8 pre-dates Windows 7 by quite a bit, and I'm not surprised that it's not compatible. But there is hope. After I was forcibly migrated to Win 7, FM 7.2 crashed hard whenever I drag-selected text. Now I'm more or less successfully running it by using the compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2 ("more or less" because this makes disk operations -- opening and saving files -- very slow). Other compatibility settings might work better for FM 8. A fair amount of experimenting may be required. To get started, go to your FM home folder, right-click FrameMaker.exe, and select Troubleshoot compatibility. You might also want to search the Adobe FM forums and FrameUsers.com for "Windows 7 compatibility" or variations of that to see if there are specific suggestions/hints. Richard G. You wrote: > Rebecca's clarification is correct -- you need a font where the italic > variation is part of the font identity/name itself (i.e. Italic/Oblique > appears in the Family field in the Character Designer). Schlomo, I'm sorry, I hope you can be patient as I am truly trying to follow your lead. I'm attaching an updated Sample.FM.? I created a new char tag for this situation called Italic Single, using the font family Eras Medium ITC, since that's the most similar obliqued font family to Arial Narrow (Italic) that? I have installed on this PC. (I don't have Univers fonts, and all the other obliqued or italic fonts that show in Windows > Fonts show as the standard family name in FM so that it would require italic as an angle setting within the Character Designer.) Doing this does work as you described, but the regular angle of Eras Medium ITC isn't quite enough of an angle to be distinguishable when applied to an "i" beside R900. However, since Swis721 Cn BT font family is more similar to Arial Narrow and also isn't used elsewhere, I could edit the maker.ini as you mentioned without causing difficult-to-manage ripple-effects. Previously you said: > If you don't have such a similar font in your current font list, you can > instruct FrameMaker to treat the Italic variation of Arial Narrow as a > distinct font name through the maker.ini file (but then Italic will not be > displayed as an available angle for Arial Narrow in the Character or > Paragraph Designer, you will have to choose a different font -- Arial > Narrow Italic -- to get the Italic). Would this be the correct change to make in the maker.ini? As another data point, I use Frame 8 all the time on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit without any problems. Check your Help | About and make sure you are using Frame 8.0p277. FM --> MIF2Go --> Kindle?
I sent this to Hedley off list, and he urged me to repost it on Framers. So here it is. --Jeremy On Wed, 11 Jan 2012 18:34:32 +1100, Hedley Finger wrote: >Do you or will you have in the future a mif2go *.mobi, *.prc, or *.azw >generator? I have attached a copy of the Amazon Kindle Publishing >Guidelines for your perusal. I found a fairly simple method, at least to MOBI for Kindle, but the same toolset does many more formats. First, get Calibre. It's free: http://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows Run it and set up its own empty directory somewhere. Now set up your Frame book as usual If you have stuff before the TOC, like cover, title page, etc., put that in one Frame file and include it as the first item in the TOC (possibly conditioned out for PDF or other formats). Make sure you add the char format for page numbers in the TOC so you can tell M2G to delete them (par. 12.7.2.3). Set up a Mif2Go project for plain HTML, with wrap and ship on, so you get a zip of the HTML. Run it. Make sure you don't get the log file in the wrap dir; if you did, remove it from the .zip. It will mess you up. In the Wrap dir, rename the *TOC.htm to index.htm. Remove the *TOC.htm from the zip, and put in index.htm. (In Win 7, you can do that with Explorer.) In Calibre, Add Book and select the zip you made. Calibre copies it into its own dir. Fill in the metadata Calibre wants (title, author, lang, etc.). With the zip selected in Calibre, Convert to MOBI. Look at all the screens before telling it to start; under Look and Feel, disable scaling of fonts, and under Structure, specify NO TOC. You may see other tweaks you want to make. Look at the resulting MOBI in a viewer, preferably a real Kindle or the Amazon Kindle app on your desktop. Calibre has its own viewer, but it doesn't behave the same as Kindle. I wasted some time fixing things that were fine on the actual Kindle. For example, Kindle puts a page break for each new HTML file, so you can control those by where you Split. The Calibre viewer ran them all together. You will probably want to make changes in font size, alignment, indents, etc. Open the local.css in the wrap dir in an editor like Notepad++ and adjust it. Save, and drag the CSS to the .zip in the Calibre directory. Rerun the Convert. I did this about 20 times. ;-) There you are... Took me about five hours for the first 200-page book, and an hour for the second one. Note: Most of that time was spent tweaking CSS. The different e-readers are totally inconsistent in their support, even of the simplest things like left-margin. -- Jeremy H. Griffith, at Omni Systems Inc. http://www.omsys.com/
Conversion of .vsd to .png
Jburgdor wrote: > Does anyone know of an automated method for doing drawing conversions > from .vsd to .png? In Google, search for "batch convert visio files" (sans quotes) for a number of options (try some variations of that search string too). You'll see that most are for converting to PDF (because that's the best choice for most purposes). But there are some options for other destination formats (PNG, JPEG, etc.) if you must. HTH! FM --> MIF2Go --> Kindle?
Great one Jeremy! Thanks sooo much for the repost. One hint, if I might. I recently published a Kindle book after many hours of research. Setting the fonts doesn't do much because the Kindle user can set what they want it to be. I streamlined and focused on 2-3 headings that were proportionally larger than the body text. Don't know if that is useful and hope it saves someone the time I spent putzing with the stuff! Big hugs MamaRed On Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 4:28 PM, Jeremy H. Find/Change - Non-Breaking Space and Thin Space
FM 9 Version: 9.0p255 Unstructured OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit FM Experience: 2-? years I am working on the final cleanup of the French translation of our suite of User Manuals and I need to handle a Find/Change issue that includes non-breaking spaces and thin spaces. I need to able to Find/Change: ": " (colon space) and replace it with "NBSP: " (where NBSP would be the actual visible non-breaking space character - see the example in the attached PNG) "/" and replace it with "TS/TS" (where TS is a Thin Space (Frame's "esc space t")) I have figured out how to insert an invisible NBSP (\u00A0), but I need the visible version that my LSP has inserted in the past. And yes, I know my LSP should do this for me, but they only do what they get paid for, and my employer prefers to save money. As for the Thin Space, \u2009, is bigger than the Thin Space generated by Frame's "esc space t" - which is my preferred size. Any help would be appreciated. Cross-reference oddity in FM 9
Hi Rene Schlomo's the expert on this, but I think your alternative font has to be an oblique/italics font, not just any different font. In his example of "Univers-Condensed Oblique", FM preserves the oblique format in xrefs because the font only has oblique glyphs. Your HelveticaNeueLT Std Cn has ordinary glyphs so FM uses them. I'm not sure I'm using the right terminology here but hopefully this makes sense anyway. cheers Rebecca >>> Rene Stephenson 21/02/12 10:59 >>> Hi Schlomo, Thanks for responding: > However, in the context of cross-references, <$paratext> ignores all > character formatting present in the extracted paragraph text, except > superscript, subscript and font family properties - which are retained only > if implemented through a character tag. > > To preserve a property such as italic (or bold), you need to have a > different font name for the required variation (even though visually it is > the identical font); alternatively, use a different font. For example, I > have "Univers-Condensed Oblique" in my font list; text tagged with a > character format using this font preserves its italic property when it is > cross-referenced. Some font families are installed this way by default. Schlomo, I think I'm missing something or doing it wrong. I'm attaching an updated Sample.FM. I changed the font family for Italic char tag to HelveticaNeueLT Std Cn, since that's the most similar font to Arial Narrow that I have installed on this PC. It shows fine in the variable definition, but when the variable is used in the heading, and then the heading text is xref'd via <$paratext>, it is still not picking up the angle. I don't understand why it works for you, but I'm not getting the desired result. Is it a bug in my FM file or something? {Aside: It seems to me that either Adobe might want to consider adding another building block that does include the character formats applied to text for cross-references, so that writers have the choice of which standard to follow; or perhaps this is a limitation that doesn't exist in FM 10?} Thanks, Rene NOTICE: This message contains privileged and confidential information intended only for the use of the addressee named above. Phantom character format override in FrameMaker 10
? FrameMaker 10 Crashes when I do a Find and Replace of a character format
Hi Richard, A framemaker engineer has reached out to me and we are currently in the process of troubleshooting the problem. If we end up identifying what the problem is and a workaround, I'll be sure to notify the list serve. Please keep in mind that the "Character Format" option in the find dialog box doesn't exist until FM 10. Yeah, I did use Apply Master Pages, seemed like it didn't update the Room for Sideheads setting. I set it manually for one text frame on a body page and the whole flow was updated. I guess the trick is, if I want to switch between templates by importing formats and running Apply Master Pages, I should check Room for Sideheads in the sidehead-free template. single-sourcing PDF and "text with layout"?
I've inherited a couple of docs in FrameMaker that have for some years been delivered in both PDF and plain text and am obliged to continue doing that. As far as I can see from the source, working directories, and so on, the PDF was generated from FrameMaker, and the text version was maintained by making the same changes twice. Any suggestions on single-sourcing the text output? People are used to the text being pretty readable, with headings in caps, indents using leading spaces, bullets using "o," and so on, so FM's native save as text is not acceptable. Best solution I've found so far is MIF2Go > RTF > Word > Save As > Text with Layout (*.ans).

FM 10 help hosed
I checked the FM 10 help option called something like "Display in browser" (as opposed to "Community help" which I presume is AIR Help). Now when I try to access the help I get this error message in my browser: "No webpage was found for the web address: file:///C:/Users/rlauriston/AppData/Roaming/chc.4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1/Local%20Store/Help/en_US/FrameMaker/10.0/Using/WSc1f2aa87c26d57661e63e3d11d3ff5863d-8000.html" That page does not exist. The only file in that directory is helpmap.txt (which does have an entry for that page). I deleted maker.ini but that didn't reset help to the default.
Find/Change - Non-Breaking Space and Thin Space
This might help (I don't think it has been updated for 10.0: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/9.0/CharacterSets/character_sets.pdf On Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 2:33 PM, Alison Craig wrote: > > I need to able to Find/Change: > > ?: ?
