RE: [gentoo-user] [OT vmware] Networking Gentoo as guest on vista

My setup: Wireless connected laptop running windows vista premium home Local lan network connected to internet via cable. Home router has the internet connection and wireless laptop is joined into lan by a WAP (Wireless access point). With static ip addressing (not dhcp). When setting up gentoo in the virtual machine you have two main approaches to networking. Bridged and NAT. Can anyone tell me which is best suited for my setup. Starting the 2008.0 minimal iso file in vmware... I end up with a working network immediately without doing a thing. Maybe I can just transfer those settings somehow but there are no setting in /etc/conf.d/net on the install disk. It appears to have gotten an address from a dhcp server built into vmware. I don't want to jerk around with wireless setting for the gentoo install and would prefer to connect thru the hosts ip and nameserver. Should I use `Bridged' or `Nat'. And how to set it up after making that decision. I run XP (with wifi) and VMWare Host with Gentoo VMs all the time. Bridged will give your VM an IP address from your router's DHCP pool -- It will look like any other network device on your home network. It will have it's own MAC and everything. In your setup, your router will NAT for you and probably your Vista and your VM will have a 192.168.1.x address unless you changed your router's default subnet / DHCP pool. NAT (what I use) is Network Address Translation and will setup a little private network between your Vista host and the VM. The VM will be assigned an IP from VMWare's VMnet8 (NAT) subnet (mine is 192.168.222.0/24). It will be able to get to the internet, but no machines will be able to get to it sans your Vista host. This works EXACTLY like your home router is NATing addresses to the internet for all devices you plug into it. In fact your Vista is most likely NATed via the router. In either case, you do NOT have to set up wireless settings in the VM at all. It emulates an AMD PCNET32 ethernet card. In BOTH cases, it will just connect to the network via your host Vista's networking. -- gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org mailing list

RE: [gentoo-user] [Probably off-topic] How do I find out what is consuming the bandwidth?
Actually they don't all cost a fortune. You can pick up a cheap managed switch these days. We have like 20 of these Nortel Baystack 450s at my company that we used to use for development for our NAC product. They sell on eBay for about $50, we've gotten some as cheap as $7 + shipping. Hell, I've found an Asanti IntraCore 3524 in great condition (that I have sitting here at my desk) laying by the trash pile that some other company in our building was tossing out. eBay for managed switch and sort by price, lowest first. Having said all that, I would just go with a software traffic monitor like the ones previously mentioned. Dealing with a manged switch is absolutely no fun unless you're either really into Layer 2 or 3 masochism, cryptic commands, and have a pant-load of computers you need vlans and stuff for. BTW, that 'trafshow' tool is pretty slick! I've never used it before. Thanks Drew Tomlinson. One bug that I notice though, is that I run several vhosts, and when I hit some of the web sites, they all show up as the same domain name. For example, I go to hit http://daevid.com and it shows up in the list as http://anotherdomain.com :-| Daevid Vincent Lockdown Networks: Real NAC Right Now! You don't *have* to use a linux machine as a gateway if you have a decent managed switch - set it to route all traffic on all ports out through the port that a monitoring machine is connected to. In other words, that one part acts like a hub. Now that the monitoring machine can see every bit on the entire Ethernet, it can count 'em :-) However, these switches cost a fortune and I very much doubt that the el-cheapo ADSL routers on the market have this feature. [gentoo-user] OT: how do I kick a MAC address off my hostapd WiFi network?
I have my WiFi network on a hostapd controlled 10.10.10.* range and my wired LAN on a 192.168.1.* range. I try to be a nice guy and leave the WiFi 'open' (no WEP) as it's segregated and I use some proper shorewall rules to route things nicely for my various privileged devices. Also, some WiFi devices I have just don't support WEP, and it's a real hassle to get others working with WEP. I don't mind the occasional person jumping on to check movie times or traffic or get email or whatever. I think bandwidth should be free for everyone and it is sure a life saver when you need to quickly get online for something. Anyways, sometimes I have stupid neighbors who don't quite get it and will just blindly let their computers connect to my WAP. UGH! They sit on it for hours and days and generally piss me off. How can I boot someone off my network? I usually add them to my shorewall blacklist file, and then: /etc/init.d/dhcp restart /etc/init.d/shorewall restart But I still see them on there it seems. http://daevid.com/examples/dhcp (essentially it's doing an 'arp -n' and then I parse that info and make it pretty) daevid dhcp # arp -n Address HWtype HWaddress Flags Mask Iface 10.10.10.7 ether 00:06:25:12:4A:D8 C wlan0 10.10.10.27 ether 00:19:7E:C5:02:AB C wlan0 67.168.160.1 ether 00:01:5C:23:D7:02 C eth0 10.10.10.69 ether 00:02:6F:21:DF:5C C wlan0 192.168.1.18 ether 00:0C:F1:A8:F7:F3 C eth1 I googled and found this little nugget that I thought would work: http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/linux-newbie/5752-dhcpd-iptables-deny-m ac-addresses.html # iptables -A FORWARD -m mac --mac-source 00:19:7E:C5:02:AB -j DROP But I still see this squatter. RE: [gentoo-user] OT: how do I kick a MAC address off my hostapd WiFi network?
-Original Message- I was wondering what would happen if someone downloaded some music illegally or some child porn? How would you prove it was them and not you? Being a good neighbor is nice but you need to be careful for sure. Dunno. I suppose I'd show some logs from the DHCPd server or HostAPd or something that showed the MAC addresses used at that particular time of the infraction? How do Coffee shops handle that? They have open WiFi -- many of them (here in Seattle at least), you can just jump on from anywhere. Hell there are about 12 WAP right here in my building that I can see and several are not WEP or WPA. When our network goes down, sometimes I just jump on them. :) Besides, most sites that actually LET you download these days require some sort of login anyways. So that hypothetical person in your scenario would have that on their computer, whereas I would not. ;-p I don't really think about it too much. I've thought about setting up a hotel page type system, but it's just one more thing I don't have time to futz with. If push came to shove, I'd just start blacklisting ALL MAC's (or I should say whitelisting *my* MACs actually). I'd really like to be part of a mesh, but where I live I'm in the middle of suburbia. RE: [gentoo-user] Re: Remerge the system with gcc-4.1?
I've held off on doing this gcc update as I'm on an old P4 2Ghz notebook with 1G RAM (Dell i8200). Things are generally working okay (as well as any linux/gentoo system can be I guess). What is the compelling reason to update if any? I've masked out this new GCC for many months and have had no issues thus far that I know of. I absolutely dread dicking with this for days and days, fixing things that currently work, merging all the /etc/ files with the new ones for the same packages that will be simply re-compiled with the new GCC. So my questions are: [a] what compelling reason is there to upgrade (other than you should b/c it's stable) [b] is it just better to d/l a new Gentoo .iso install that has all this crap already, copy over my world file or whatever and have it install the missing packages (apache, php, mysql, kde, gnome, etc) [c] if I do that method, I would save the hassle of KDE and Gnome right? As they come as binaries already? [d] can I just not fix if it aint broke and keep with what I have? Or is this just a question of time before I start hitting walls of new packages I can't use. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Richard Fish Sent: Friday, September 08, 2006 3:13 PM To: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] Re: Remerge the system with gcc-4.1? LOL. Naga, I thank you for your reply. I think you were right about subversion, I've since reverted back to 2.0.59. Had I gotten your email a few hours earlier, I think things would be a whole lot different, but at the moment, it's more important for me to be up than current. And my frustration level is fairly high ATM, so it's best I not attempt this again till more kinks are worked out. I do appreciate your ideas, and they will certainly come in handy in the future when I re-attempt this down the road. d -Original Message- From: Naga [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 19, 2007 11:41 PM To: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] apache2 2.2.x fails to start due to mod_dav_svn.so On Thursday 20 September 2007 03:52:59 Daevid Vincent wrote: Seriously? -Original Message- From: Pawel K [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2007 8:28 AM Hello When package build fails during: emerge --update world I use the: emerge --resume --skipfirst How to force emerge to continue build with the next package in case previous build failed. Thank you for help. Ah yes, quite possibly one of the most useful 'tricks' ever discovered: emerge -Davu world || until emerge --resume --skipfirst; do :; done Why there isn't an option like --auto_resume as part of emerge, is beyond me... If they went through, I attached the original emails I got this tip from and thanks to Boyd Stephen and Neil Bothwick. Some interesting dialogs in there too... ---BeginMessage--- I think this is a given, but just in case... It certainly should allow me to do an 'emerge -Davu world' equivallent, and allow me to then select only the packages (or all or none) to install and of course their dependencies. It should show me the 'blocking' packages (if any), and allow me to easily unmerge them right there. It should absolutely be smart enough that if a package fails to compile, SKIP IT! And move on to the next one. There is nothing more frustrating than having like 100 packages to install, setting it up to run through the night, excited to see the new stuff, and then the utter dissapointment to see that portage shit the bed on the second package and just sat there doing nothing all night long. GRR. :) why emerge --resume --skipfirst is not the default exception handling routine for 'emerge' is beyond my comprehension. 'emerge' should at least have a command line option to invoke that! It should also alert me to all the 'notifications' that are in the PORTAGE_LOGS for things that I might have to manually do after the packages are installed. It should do a revdep-rebuild to make sure all packages are proper. -Original Message- From: Arturo 'Buanzo' Busleiman [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 16, 2006 2:29 PM To: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org Subject: [gentoo-user] New Portage browser -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 People, I'm working on a new portage browser, and I was looking for ideas from USERS, that's why I'm posting here. RE: [gentoo-user] Immensely disappointed in emerge -DuN world these days
-Original Message- From: Mark Knecht [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 4:37 PM I've been messing with a standard x86, middle of the road Gentoo machine for over two days now. There must be 20 or 30 packages that won't build. Frustrating. Most of the problems are in and around getting Gnome updated. Typical of the problem, but definitely not limited to this, is the following sort of message. Unfortunately every one of the failing packages is giving different messages so there's nothing obvious to me here. What a mess! I've never in over 6 years of using Gentoo ever seen things in worse shape. Two days of this. No fun. I do think that a good part of this problem is more of the expat stuff. I had hoped it would be fixed up in portage before I got around to working on this machine but with upcoming death of the older versions of MythTV and the requirements to go to newer versions I had to get to work. Bummer. 2 days work and no end in sight. rant I have to fully agree with you. I used to run a mixture of ~x86 and stable x86 on both my notebook and my server (when I was more naive). Then I got tired of compiling every day some -r1 -r2 -rN minute ebuild for a 100MB package. Grr. So I painfully ripped out all the ~x86 masks and now my system is about 99% 'stable x86'. I thought, foolishly, at the time, that this would ease my pain. I made the assumption that the stable branch would be well tested and compile cleanly at the very least. With the occasional minor googling or asking the list for a simple snag here and there. Boy was that woefully optimistic. Linux is painful enough as it is to use. 8 billion config files to worry about screwing up. Another 4 million ebuild.log files to parse and act upon after every update. rev-dep rebuilding. And then, as someone else mentioned, the anxiety of the fact that if you don't update with some frequency, you are so far out of date that an emerge system/world is a dilemma whether to just format and start over. The old adage, if it ain't broke, don't fix it can't even be applied for that very reason. Nothing like having a production server S.T.B. because some stable update hosed my box/config/settings, and then I have to scramble for the next few hours tracking down solutions -- Exim, Dovecot, Apache, KDE, Gnome all come to mind (my KDE is currently broken as of the emerge update two days ago). Every time I find myself fighting with some package that won't compile, or a needing a version of something that isn't marked x86 (like SVN STILL!) that should be by now, or when I watch the 10 other developers where I work who have Compiz working flawlessly on Ubuntu by simply apt-get installing it, I wonder what am I hanging on to Gentoo for (since my first install in 2004). I REALLY love the theory behind it. I REALLY think/thought it has potential. I REALLY love the customization. But is that all REALLY worth the headaches. I literally triple boot my notebook now. Gentoo, XP and Ubuntu. The Ubuntu Gnome/Compiz works great. I can't even get it to work in Gentoo. SAME F'N HARDWARE! The stupid nVidia drivers are all whack and have stopped supporting my GeForce 440 card -- I can't change the card so I'm screwed with older drivers. Yet, somehow Ubuntu works in composite mode (albeit a tiny bit pokie). WTF? I look at the major notebook players like Dell and now Lenovo talking about distros to support and they both choose Ubuntu. I look at distro-watch and Ubuntu is #1, with gentoo #13 with 1/4 the votes. I'm not quite ready to jump ship yet, but someone please tell me the _very near_ future is brighter for Gentoo. Give me some hope... /rant -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] root can't login on console, but can ssh...
I've posted this about two months ago without any replies. I've been googling and trying things, but still can't get this to work like it used to. I simply want root to be able to login from console (tty[1-6]) or ssh (pts/[0-9]) without a password. Currently ssh does work fine. It's only the physical console that doesn't. This WAS working perfectly, then PAM or some other ebuild broke it on me. Just for sanity, I even assigned root a password, I now get a Password prompt, but it STILL can't login. (positive I'm typing it right) It says Login incorrect. -Original Message- From: Daevid Vincent [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 3:47 PM To: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org Subject: [gentoo-user] root can't login on console, but can ssh... I used to use the linux-wlan-ng stuff, then after it was depricated, I switched to the in-kernel hostapd. Works like a champ. My Engenius 2511 (?) with 8dbi Omni antenna is my WAP and on the 10.10.10.* network, and my LAN is the 192.168.* network. I use Shorewall to allow certain WiFi clients through (like my notebook). [gentoo-user] OT: Linux (Ubuntu) on a USB drive doesn't save
I have an ancient Gateway 200ARC sans notebook hard drive (amongst other things). I don't have the stupid little ribbon cable so I can't install one either. And they charge like $50 for one. The notebook was free, and a 1GB USB stick is only $20. a 2GB is like $40. I wanted to install Linux on it to use it as an always-on thin client that can just monitor some webpages, and do a few other basic tasks. I followed this guide: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/02/12/usb-ubuntu-tutorial-for-linux-us ers/#more-117 And used Ubuntu 7.04. It worked great. I can boot and get online and all sorts of things. However, nothing saves !!!? As in nothing is persistent. I can create the file and see it in the directory, edit it, and all that jazz. But upon a reboot, it's gone!? I created a .vimrc and rebooted and it's gone! I apt-get install some apps and they're not there now. I save my gnome settings. Revert back each time I reboot. So what am I missing? Am I retarded and you can't use a 1GB USB stick as a real hard drive like that? -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] OT: Recommend a good PCI or PCMCIA b/g wifi card
I've been using a Senao Engenius NL2511 (200mW) card for several years in my Gentoo Linux server as my AP. I use the host_ap drivers in the kernel and life is good. However, 802.11b is starting to show it's age at 11Mbps. Sooo I would love to upgrade this as painlessly as possible to one of the newer 'g' or 'n' cards (I currently have no 'n' cards, but AFAIK, they're backwards compatible right?). I'm looking for either a PCI card, or a PCMCIA card that I can shove into my PCI/PCMCIA adapter I'm currently using. Also, I have a mixture of some 'b' devices and some 'g' (capable) devices. So it needs to work with both simultaneously (is that possible, or does the radio downgrade to lowest common denominator?) Ideally if it has MMCX connector so I can continue to use my 8dbi antenna and pigtail, that would rawk. Can anyone suggest something that will work with hostapd and meet my needs? RE: [gentoo-user] Re: I copied a Gentoo VM and now networking doesn't work.
It had nothing to do with the copying. It's the annoying udev rules stuff, it freakin' figures out everything else in your system, but the MAC is static or something. Edit this file: /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules Change your MAC to the one that VMWare assigned the VM. RE: [gentoo-user] Gnome / problem registering the panel with bonobo-activation-server / error code 3
I've still got no gnome working and no idea how to fix this. I joined the gnome list, but it's useless. I've posted several times, and nothing gets through to it! I use DynDNS so it should work fine. The Exim list (which blocks too) works. In any event, it's so low volume (shocking considering how huge gnome is), I wonder if there is more than a handful of people on it to begin with. But I digress... This weekend, I did an emerge -au world and after two days, and like 160 packages, and all the 'etc-update' and stuff, still no gnome love. rev-dep rebuild. Not even a some lube. Then I did an emerge -aDu gnome and it compiled like 59 more packages. Guess what... Yep. Gnome still hates me and is putting it right in my pooper. Dry. So now I'm out of ideas. RE: [gentoo-user] How to prevent www-client/mozilla-firefox when I have www-client/mozilla-firefox-bin
Hello Daevid Vincent, But I have the -bin version installed... Some packages require the firefox or seamonkey source, to build against. I also have this in /etc/make.conf The mplayer-plug-in ebuild contains DEPEND=... || ( www-client/mozilla-firefox www-client/seamonkey ) i.e. it depends on either seamonkey or mozilla-firefox, NOT firefox-bin. You'll have to emerge firefox from source to use this plugin. Sorta makes the -bin useless (except in very rare circumstances) then doesn't it? Perhaps there should be a www-client/mozilla-firefox-headers or something that contains the .h files or whatever are needed for other dependant programs. Or better still, just have the -bin version install those wherever they need to be, so other things can compile. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

RE: [gentoo-user] What's the deal with no gnome 2.18 in portage?
I would check overlay setup and also try `emerge =exact-group/exact-package-2.18.whatever` i.e. specify the specific ebuild you wish to emerge? I have used overlays before for xgl and for init-ng but both were a few months ago so please feel free to correct me if I am missing something. I'm not interested in doing any kind of fancy-shmancy installation. I'm trying to run near stable as possible. In fact, I've recently deleted my package.keywords file so that I can migrate all the ~x86 packages to x86 as they come in line (i.e. U, not D) I find it interesting that 2.18 doesn't even have a ~x86 version listed however. Was someone sleeping on the job ;-) or is it somehow more complicated than the previous 2.16 (and prior) releases to add to portage? Honestly, I use KDE vs. Gnome, but I'm always wanting to see what new groovy stuff Gnome has. And in this particular case, my Gnome is somehow horked. Some $hit about bonobo or some other uselessly-named library/program that means nothing to me. So I was hoping to solve that by just re-emerging 'gnome' and getting the 2.18 -- since it's gonna take a few days to emerge anyways. I've tried to emerge 'gnome' but it doesn't seem to fix the problem, and I don't care all that much anyways. Although my fonts in KDE are sorta screwed for things like FireFox that rely upon some gnome/GTK/whatever... -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Just the feature request. Wrt. bug #165709 I'd probably have pointed you towards app-portage/eix and resolved it as WONTFIX or even INVALID as I really don't see the point in that feature request. There are a lot of tools including eix that are a lot more suitable for queries about what is stable and what isn't. I do understand jakubs reasoning for thinking it's triggered by bug #157361 and hence marking it a dupe of that though. Yes, but then I have to manually, one at a time search eix and compare to the output of 'emerge world'. I use eix. That's actually why I suspect that the feature could be implemented fairly easily. Portage has all the info it needs. I think reopening the same bug 3 times is a terrible idea. It clearly doesn't help anyone. Nor does just blindly closing it without really comprehending what the request is for. The most obvious options after the first time are to CC the [EMAIL PROTECTED] alias on the bug to make the portage devs aware of it (while commenting about why you do that), or to post a mail here, on the gentoo-dev-portage@ mailing list (this is a feature request for portage after all) or log onto irc and talk to the portage devs in #gentoo-portage on freenode. Actually, I'll just concede defeat. :( Obviously the maintainer has either a closed mind and is unwilling to consider my request, or he just doesn't get it and wants to lump two disjointed bugs together. I get the feeling that even after all the work to get it into an official bug/request. I'll either be greeted with learn python and code it yourself as a patch, or it will sit there forever amongst the thousands of other bugs... Mostly by posting here, I just wanted to know if I was missing something obvious and being a retard or if the maintainer was... *sigh* ...also that maybe someone else would say, oh yeah, I like that idea and perhaps could articulate it better than I... RE: [gentoo-user] Can someone please explain to me why these bugs are duplicates?
Yes, but then I have to manually, one at a time search eix and compare to the output of 'emerge world'. I use eix. That's actually why I suspect that the feature could be implemented fairly easily. Portage has all the info it needs. You do know that eix is not related to portage in any way? Not to argue semantics, but I'm guessing, and I could be wrong, but 'esearch' or whatever other database (used generically) that portage uses has at least what versions there are of each package and if they're ~x86 or not. That's all that's required for this request. Anyway, can you explain to me how this feature would help you at all. I really don't understand the use case for it. Only because you asked... And the short answer is mostly for stability and book-keeping. I run a mixed environment of stable and testing -- as do most people. Often I run a testing (~x86) package b/c I need a feature that isn't available in the stable version. I would prefer to be all stable, but life is not so kind in the land of Gentoo. And marking packages stable with any regularity seems to be an exercise in patience and nagging and bug requests and waiting and ... So then when I do an emerge world, there are sometimes hundreds of packages. All nickel and diming me to death. Like a -r1 -r2 -r3... Or a v1.0.1 v1.0.2 etc. All these little incremental ones that are mostly due to them being in testing. I really don't give a rat's ass about them and don't want to spend days compiling things just for one tiny little bug fix, or an ebuild fix or whatever else causes a version bump. Therefore, if I could easily look and see a flag saying, Hey! This package is now stable and is equal to or newer than the testing version you've got installed. I would be more inclined to upgrade to it, and simultaneously remove the /etc/portage/package.mask entry so I can therefore continue to be stable until the next must have feature in some package. That's it. It's quite simple really. I could go on in more depth here, but I feel like I'm just wasting everyone's time. To me, it feels like an obvious and very useful additional information to show, but maybe I'm weird. ÐÆ5ÏÐ Some people, when confronted with a problem, think 'I know, I'll use XML.' [gentoo-user] Gentoo VMWare image works on Intel but not AMD. Are they not interchangeable?
I have a VMWare Workstation image of Gentoo Linux that I transfer between my desktop and my notebook (for LAMP/Ruby development) and it works fantastic on both. Both are running WindowsXP as the host VMWare. Both are Pentium4. Recently, I tried to share the image with a co-worker and it pukes out about the time it does some udev stuff at the top of starting up. The (rc.init ?) scripts start breaking and spewing lots of errors and ultimately doesn't mount the filesystem properly. We are able to manually mount it later, but then lost of other things are broken. VMware doesn't have any errors we could find, not even in the logs. It seems to be an OS issue. Does the host CPU make a difference? I thought it was all emulated? I tried to recompile the kernel with the generic '386 CPU settings and removed all power mgmt etc, and the same issue happens. Can I not transfer between Intel and AMD CPUs? Is there some magic thing in the kernel I need to set so it can work on both? We attempted several times and tried using VMWare player and also VMWare workstation. It would really suck to have to have him re-compile everything just to get the same dev environment setup as mine. RE: [gentoo-user] How packages are made stable - suggestion for improvement
This is a little upsetting to learn that effectively stability happens as an after thought. I used to run a hybrid of ~x86 and stable, but I've gotten so tired of seeing new package versions every day, I felt I was spending more time compiling to get the latest versions, than actually using my system. I recently just deleted my /etc/portage/package.keywords file and was figuring that over time, I would then end up with a nice 'stable' system as each package caught up with the ~x86 one I was using currently. I didn't want to re-compile / downgrade everything either. But as I read this thread, it seems that in effect, I won't really be getting a more stable system, I'll just be getting an older, out of date one, as nobody is actively monitoring packages and then flagging them as stable. :( This feels like there should be some sort of cronjob running in conjunction with the bug tracker. It could go through every package, and check if it's version is = 30 days and also check the number of bugs. If there are some, it should ping the maintainer (and/or) the developer of said package, otherwise, it could automatically stabilize the package flag. So on one hand there is a little prod to get things moving, and on another, some of the manual task is reduced. Alternately, how about adding some sort of 'vote' or 'request stability' button on http://packages.gentoo.org/ for each package's detail page. This could then help 'automate' the requests and not tie up the bug tracker with requests (which aren't really bugs per se). DÆVID -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] RE: I'm not getting gentoo list emails anymore?
Would the list admin please double check the mlmmj list administration tools and see if there is some setting for my email address that says 'nomail' or 'suspended' or something like that... Is my email even showing up in the list (or did my unsubscribes go through). Does the list use any kind of RBL? I looked at the mlmmj site (and that is an extremely generous term for this page http://mlmmj.mmj.dk/), and it had nothing useful in terms of commands I could try -- since 'help' doesn't even respond. Well, according to http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.user/176367 my last post just went through, so clearly my unsubscribe commands aren't even being received/executed either. Just to verify, I have tried both: [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] (does it matter if I use list. or not?) (And to clarify, I don't wish to actually unsubscribe, I'm merely trying to get mlmmj to reply back to me or clear my 'bits' in case something was toggled to not send me mail) Could the list admin check the /var/log/mail/* logs and look for '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' and see if there are any error messages or anything? Something that might shed some light as to what's happening here. This is very bizarre that I can post to the list a normal email, but not a command one, and not receive back anything. It really feels like something specific to my actual email address and mlmmj. I tried to subscribe via my work account (which I only use for testing as a backup email for situations like this) and I got a response instantly to confirm. *sigh* I'm hoping for a Christmas miracle here... -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

I had a power outage here in Seattle, WA since last Thursday. Server is finally online. [gentoo-user] How do I get KDE to start on boot?
This seems like a newb question. I've been using my Gentoo for a few years now, and since X/KDE/Gnome/etc. never seemed to be quite stable, I always booted into command lines and then manually 'startx' JICSH. But I find myself almost always doing that these days, so I suppose it's time to make the plunge so that X starts when I boot up. RE: [gentoo-user] Re: Mini Gentoo in VMWare
I use a Gentoo VM for a lot of LAMP dev work, and I can tell you it's kind of painful to upgrade packages with all the compiling. VMWare is slower than normal to compile, mostly due to disk I/O. Since each HD is a big-ass file. A few optimizations I might suggest: Partition a dedicated physical hard drive into chunks and use VMWare's raw disk so you have real hardware/hard disks. I'd suggest a very fast SCSI drive for the best performance since you're running several VMs. Also, look into the VMWare server version which uses the raw iron a bit better as it's dedicated to running many VMs. I find that more RAM on VMWare has a point of deminishing returns. I have a VM that I dedicate 512MB of my 2GBs and honestly it feels slower than when I give it 128-256MB only. It may be a WinXP thing that it's not efficiently using the RAM right or something. -Original Message- From: Trenton Adams [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, November 05, 2006 9:19 PM To: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] Re: Mini Gentoo in VMWare Yes, VMWare is fit for the task, simply because I would be using it on a windows machine. What did you think it should do with --deep without --update? I'm no expert by any stretch, I just noticed that it was acting different and as illustrated, I could prove it. Perhaps I misunderstood what --deep was for. I guess I thought it was the package and any dependencies that NEEDED upgrade for the package to work. Now it feels like it just pulls in the other dependencies just because that's what they are. Again, I could be wrong. I just noticed more stuff being shown than usual, that's all. RE: [gentoo-user] emerge -D pulling in more than it should these days?!
-Original Message- Portage is developing quite fast at the moment so it is quite possible that you have discovered some change in behaviour (either due to a bug or due to permanent changes) but I don't see anything wrong in this mail... What makes you think it pulls in more stuff than it should? I thought it was pretty obvious, but to summarize: emerge -av sys-apps/baselayout Is just that. The baselayout. But when I do emerge -Dav sys-apps/baselayout It pulls in baselayout, python, perl, openssl (clearly the last two are not needed or related to baselayout) Which just so happens to be the exact same thing if I do emerge -Davu sys-apps/baselayout On my older Gentoo server, typing either of the first two work exactly as expected and only pull in the single package. So in summary, -D is acting like an implied -u (or something to that effect). 'baselayout' is only one example. Here's another one, but the list goes on and on. Openssl should not require Perl in this case. locutus ~ # emerge -av dev-libs/openssl [ebuild U ] dev-libs/openssl-0.9.8d [0.9.8c-r2] USE=zlib -bindist -emacs -sse2 -test 0 kB locutus ~ # emerge -Dav dev-libs/openssl [ebuild U ] dev-libs/openssl-0.9.8d [0.9.8c-r2] USE=zlib -bindist -emacs -sse2 -test 0 kB [ebuild U ] dev-lang/perl-5.8.8-r2 [5.8.8-r1] USE=berkdb gdbm -build -debug -doc -ithreads -perlsuid 0 kB locutus ~ # emerge -avu dev-libs/openssl [ebuild U ] dev-lang/perl-5.8.8-r2 [5.8.8-r1] USE=berkdb gdbm -build -debug -doc -ithreads -perlsuid 0 kB [ebuild U ] dev-libs/openssl-0.9.8d [0.9.8c-r2] USE=zlib -bindist -emacs -sse2 -test 0 kB -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

RE: [gentoo-user] Protecting my server against an individual
Don't spend too much time, as it's a waste. You will NOT see my MAC address. Not because I try to disguise it, but because it won't be available to you. That's simply how TCP/IP works. There is one caveat to this, I if you are running a 802.11 wifi, the MAC is sent in the packets and then MAC filtering could be a rudimentary deterrent for basic attacks. As mentioned however, it is absolutely possible and trivial to 'spoof' a MAC. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] KDE no longer rendering fonts properly
What happened to my KDE 3.5.3? The fonts are gone sorta -- at least to the point that makes KDE unusable. If I fire up a terminal, the window is black, but I can see that things are happening, as the cursor will move. but no text shows. if i do an 'ls' for example, i can see something 'scrolling' as the bar on the right moves, but no text is rendered. highlighting all the text in the window will reveal red/blue/etc inverse areas which i assume are directories, tarballs, etc... my clock applet is 'blank', but if i roll over it, i see the time in the bubble that pops up. most menus are blank, but I can see the underscore of where the hotkey would be. if I click on the menu, it 'blinks' very fast the text that should be there. this is the same for buttons. they show up until i roll the mouse onto them, then the text vanishes but i see the underscore. all the icons on my desktop are there, and the text under them is 'black' (like the shadow text), but the white text that used to be over the black is gone. firefox will show some text, then vanish, but if i drag/highlight all the text on the page, it comes back. RE: [gentoo-user] viewing consoles remotely
-Original Message- From: Ryan Tandy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, June 01, 2006 9:58 PM For your situation, assuming I've interpreted it correctly, you should get the user to SSH into your box, set their shell in /etc/passwd to /usr/bin/screen -S (something memorable) /bin/bash, and yourself run sudo screen -x (something memorable) to view it. I tried this suggestion, but it didn't work. I couldn't login. :( I would LOVE to make screen (and BASH) my default shell. I'm always ssh'ing into my servers and getting upset if the connection goes down between me and them, or I start an emerge and then forgot that I can't actually shut down my host computer as that will kill the ssh and therefore the emerge. I want screen to start up automatically as my default shell (as bash, with all my .bashrc settings, etc) whenever I connect either via console or ssh. I also would like to automatically re-attach to that screen whenever I login again. Is this possible? And if so, what do I need to put in /etc/password or wherever. I could put it in a .bash* file, but that seems hackish (given the idea in Ryan's quote above). DÆVID -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

RE: [gentoo-user] Modular Xorg 7 won't start with nVidia GeForce4 440 Go [SOLVED]
I finally got this working it seems. These links were very helpful: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90047 http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-327623.html http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=49718highlight=glx+xorg+ge ntoo http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/search.php?searchid=464072 I can't recall the exact thing that solved it, but I suspect it was the nvidia/tls thing in the first post. I un/merged, un/masked, rm -rf so many things I can't remember anymore. But at the end of the day, I do have the latest nvidia drivers working in OpenGL glory on my Dell i8200 notebook GeForce 440 card. Glxgears gives me: 7630 frames in 5 seconds = 1526 FPS +/- Now if only I could figure out a way to get the video card to not share an IRQ with SEVEN other things including my eth0, wlan and usb amongst other things -- then it wouldn't studder. *sigh*. -Original Message- From: Daevid Vincent [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 12:58 PM To: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org Subject: RE: [gentoo-user] Modular Xorg 7 won't start with nVidia GeForce4 440 Go This should not be needed. The X server (actually, the nvidia module loaded in the X server) should create these automatically if they do not exist. From an strace of X on my system after removing the nvidiactl and nvidia0 device nodes: Okay. I removed them. Thanks. So what is causing X7 to crash is when I set: eselect opengl set nvidia If you comment out the line: Load glx in xorg.conf, do you still get the crash? No. X starts now. But glxgears segfaults. How are you starting the X server? Does it still crash if you run just X :0? I type startx. X :0 just gives me (as you probably already know) a checker-board backdrop and a cursor. Can't do anything else with it. Take the most recent version of nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx (~x86) and take a look at /etc/modules.d/nvidia. There something about a module-option for notebook systems. Tried various ways with and without this option enabled. However, it says that's to solve hard lock ups. I don't have that problem. X starts, then just dies (if I have the wrong combination of eselect/glx). It's definitely related to OpenGL now... Tried rebooting after a few different option/tweaks just to be sure too. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
RE: [gentoo-user] [OT] gentoo inside vmware on winxp
I use a custom Gentoo in a VMWare on XP all the time for LAMP development. Works like a charm. Given how pokey Gentoo can be to install with all the compiling and such, perhaps you might start with a pre-configured one, and then just 'emerge -Davu world' as needed... (ps. I've not tried this one myself, I built my GenVM a couple years ago now, and just keep updating that one) http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/64 D.Vin You had me at EHLO --E.Webb (10.04.05) -Original Message- From: news [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Harry Putnam Sent: Tuesday, May 16, 2006 2:23 PM To: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org Subject: [gentoo-user] [OT] gentoo inside vmware on winxp Using vmware on winxp and I see gentoo is not listed as a supported OS like Suse is. I'm currently running Suse from vmware for that reason. I did try to get gentoo running there sometime ago and don't remember what the problems were now. I'm wondering if anyone here is running gentoo inside vmware on winxp and if they might coach me on that. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
RE: [gentoo-user] New Portage browser
I think this is a given, but just in case... I've never found a program that would allow me to browse portage categories, then packages, showing in one window description, version, etc, etc. Thus, I'm working on one now, but I want to develop something that will run in console and X, too, like suse's yast. So, I would like to know: 1) do you prefer a console, a GUI, or both? 2) what additional functionality would you like? (mask/unmask packages, install/remove, emerge command generator [much like nmapfe], etc) If you have any idea regarding development (because of the both console and X-compatible script/program), please let me know. If not, I may end up writing an API, and two different programs. [gentoo-user] How do I get minimal portage-logs
In /etc/make.conf I have PORT_LOGDIR=/var/tmp/portage-logs This is great in that I can then read through the billions of .log files to see if there are any post install manual tasks I have to do. However, a good majority of them are just compilation output. I really don't need or care to see those -- especially if the compilation concluded sans errors. I just want the juicy ones. The ones that tell me to take further action. Is there a setting to tailor this? -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
