You can drop it in /etc/portage/patches/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers folder, portage should take care of the rest when you emerge the package. Hi Alan, That is expected with 4.10 kernels. You can grab a patch from my /etc/portage repository: https://github.com/fsvm88/gentoo-portage_etc/blob/master/patches/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers/378.09-4.10-rc8.patch I took it from the NVidia forums, you can also find it there, I just rebased it for portage. Re: [gentoo-user] The sudden disappearance of ....WHAT??? (I/O error on a SD flash card?!)
Hi tuxic, That looks like an output from photorec. Generally photorec only reads the whole disk block by block, when it finds information in the filesystem's metadata - either inode table or inodes themselves - you're lucky and you get filenames, otherwise you only get that kind of output. Consider that all those items might as well be deleted items, so you might be getting back a lot of cruft. I never had to use the functionality so I cannot comment on how good it works, but testdisk allows you to restore partitions by scanning the entire disk/image searching for superblocks and partition metadata. That might give you a chance of restoring the superblock of the partition and salvaging at least some part of the data. See a guide on testdisk's official website -> http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step Consider that by default ext4 partitions should have superblock backups spread out at fixed intervals during the filesystem creation, so this should work better than trying to blindly carve the data out of the partition. Before applying fixes to the image file make a backup in case something gets screwed up :-) Testdisk might detect additional stuff that looks like partition info, but it's not. [gentoo-user] anyone tried gentoo with f2fs yet?
hi everyone has anyone been able to install amd64-gentoo-minimal with f2fs from the livecd successfully? I tried to do so but failed when trying to mount the filesystem. following error occured: The device '/dev/sda1' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS. Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around? I'm using a brand new ssd. there has neither been installed a filesystem before nor did I create a NTFS partition. does the error occur because the livecd is using kernel 3.7.10 and f2fs is only available with kernel 3.8.X and later? If so, could I just try to install gentoo based on another livecd which is using kernel 3.8.X? thanks for any replies. Von Samsung Mobile gesendet

Re: [gentoo-user] How can I know which package needs to upgrade without using emerge --sync?
Well, when I started with Gentoo Linux almost a year ago, I emerged --sync more than twice per week. I never experimented any damage or error. However, I do not advise people to do it so frequently just because they will not find updated versions of their favorite packages as often as I thought initially. Today I emerge --sync once every week. Now I advise people to keep their systems synced at least once a month, not because their machine necessarily needs to, but because after much time with no emerging --sync, you'd see your computers spending one or two days downloading and compiling the updated packages, and that is really annoying. Here is a suggestion to have painless updates: emerge --sync emerge --update --deep world the --deep flag will ensure a throughly revision of dependencies. How can I know whether I really need a sync and upgrade my system if a new kernel or glibc is released? There are several guidelines no one really invented, but may be handy: o Whenever you find a bug in your favorite programs, there will be a big chance they are fixed in the latest versions; o Whenever you navigate a forum or post in a mailing list asking for help with your favorite programs, there is a low-to-moderate chance you get the answer That only works with version x.x.x or above or so o From time to time, new programs are added to the Portage tree and someday you will find yourself wanting to give a try to a program you do not have in your machines' tree. o If you need to have your machine secured against vulnerabilities, you definitely need to emerge --sync every two weeks at least. o When a new kernel version is released, there is no need to update everything. Actually, what I remember is that I just emerge the new kernel version, compile and reboot. o When a new glibc version is released, there is a number of packages directly depending on it being updated, but no so many. So this one is not really a guideline. Sascha's method is easier. Credits to her. Sincerely, -- Fabio A. Correa D. Re: [gentoo-user] Gentoo on HP HP Pavilion dv6305us
Hello Adrian, I have installed Gentoo on a HP Pavilion 6258SE. Maybe some of the instructions apply to your box, too. There is no need to be so strict about the model and specifications; most guidelines for the dv6000 series will apply to your machine. Also, be the first to post the dv6305us results on linux-laptop.net and tuxmobil.org! On 02/04/07, Adrian [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Howdy, I've done some googling but no useful results yet. I'm wondering if anyone has tried installing Gentoo on a HP HP Pavilion dv6305us and if so, how did that work out? thanks for any input. Re: [gentoo-user] Re: Compile gcc reboot my laptop!
Hey! How about emerging gcc while NOT being in KDE or even X? You should also check that there is plenty of space on the partition where /var resides. Run memtest86 for a day or two -- or at least overnight. I've also seen problems like that caused by a bad sector in a swap partition and a bad disk controller card/cable. Since it's a laptop, another possibility is overheating due to faulty fan-speed control. IMO, there's a 95% or better chance it's a hardware problem. RAM is the easiest to test (and the easiest to fix), so start there. -- Grant Edwards grante Yow! Is a tattoo at real, like a curb or a visi.combattleship? Re: [gentoo-user] Beryl
Well Samir, that is a very weird glitch, but we all experience instabilities when using beryl. I have a similar experience: In KDE control center, I configured Lock Session with the Win+F6 keys; sometimes, Beryl interprets this key as Show Desktop because it is previously configured so, but otherwise it is Lock Session. It is possible that there are similar conflictive assignments to the hot corners of your screen. Another instability consists that sometimes Emerald dies for no reason. -- Fabio A. Correa D.
