Freeze all amounts that accrued to political parties through
unconstitutional Electoral Bonds

Election Commission of India (ECI)

Shri A C Pandey
Election Commissioner
Election Commission of India (ECI)

Shri Arun Goel
Election Commissioner
Election Commission of India (ECI)

Dear S/Shri Rajiv Kumar/ Pandey/ Goel,

The apex court of India has held the Electoral Bonds scheme being
non-transparent to be violative of the Constitution.

I understand that large amounts are still lying in the accounts of the
political parties including BJP, the biggest beneficiary of the scheme.
Since one is not sure whether the amounts thus lying with the political
parties have accrued from genuine sources compliant with the national
interest and whether some of those funds may have accrued even through
questionable means, as the custodian for conducting elections in a free and
fair manner, the Commission should invoke it’s authority under Article 324
and freeze all those funds to make sure that not a single rupee obtained
under the scheme is used in the coming elections.

This should be ordered by the Commission irrespective of whether any
announcement of the election schedule is made or not

I hope that the Commission rises to the occasion, stands by the people of
the country and takes action forthwith.

Regards.

Yours sincerely,

E.A.S. Sarma

[Goanet] Literary Questions to Contemplate

2024-03-02 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
I have been following the post-mortem on the literary festivals going on in
India.  There was the podcast interview on: Why do writers write? and How to
get a book published? In that dialog we got insights into Why and How books are
published in India and likely elsewhere?
As is clear, most writers do not write to enrich themselves, or even make a
living, but mainly as a passion to sooth their own intellect and ego. Somewhere
deep it is likely that authors and publishers and those involved in book
selling desire to leave a legacy of informed readers in the next generation. As
I see in the presentations of the material being highlighted, most of the works
are fiction and poetry, with little non-fiction prose like "Snakes of Goa."
And I ask myself: Is India's literature genre becoming like America's
literature genre and creating a generation and an era of highly articulate
readers who are poorly informed individuals and society they live in?
Sometime ago, there was much discussion on the need for non-fiction works to
publish references. (Very good and important).  But there was little discussion
of analyzing the references and their accuracy at the time they were written or
now with hindsight knowledge.  Writings about colonial history or Goa's
Inquisition smacks of authors that are Indophile, Islamophile, Lusophile or
Anglophile written for a targeted audience aimed to meet an immediate social/
political need.
Can writers, publishers, and book sellers and promoters in the 2024 overcome
those biases and learn from those pitfalls?Regards, GL

[Goanet] Why High Blood Pressure Matters to Your Health

And how to get it under control.

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure — but only a
quarter of those with hypertension have it under control

, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

High blood pressure “is a smoldering public health crisis,” said Dr. Rishi
K. Wadhera, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School
and an author of new research showing that blood pressure screenings
 have
not returned to what they were before the coronavirus pandemic.

High blood pressure can raise the risk of heart attack, stroke

, pregnancy complications

and other health problems, but the symptoms are “often silent,” Dr.
Wadhera said.

“I worry it flies under the radar for many patients,” he added.

Here’s what to know about the issue, and how to get your blood pressure
under control.
What is blood pressure? And what’s a normal level?
Blood pressure is the force that blood exerts against artery walls

in the heart, said Dr. Jim Liu, a cardiologist at the Ohio State
University Wexner Medical Center. You’ll always hear your blood pressure
given as two numbers: The top number, known as systolic pressure, measures
that force when the heart contracts. The bottom number, known as diastolic
pressure, gauges the force when the heart muscle relaxes. It’s measured in
units known as millimeters of mercury
, or mm Hg.

You can have your blood pressure checked during a medical appointment or at
a pharmacy, or you can check it yourself with a home monitor. The American
Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology define normal
blood pressure

as below 120/80 mm Hg. The C.D.C. defines high blood pressure as 130/80 mm
Hg or higher.

Very high blood pressure can cause symptoms
 including
severe headaches, chest pain and dizziness. For many people, however, blood
pressure increases too gradually for them to notice these issues, Dr. Liu
said.

Why is high blood pressure harmful?

During Mwinyi's terms, Tanzania took the first steps to reverse the
socialist policies of Julius Nyerere. He relaxed import restrictions and
encouraged private enterprise. It was during his second term that
multi-party politics were introduced under pressure for reform from foreign
and domestic sources.

Re: [Goanet] The naval battles on Lake Tanganyika 1914 to 1918

2024-03-02 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Doc,The British kept meticulous records of those who died for their cause in
Tanganyika.
Wilfred Owen described WWI in:
Red lips are not so redAs the stained stones kissed by the English dead.

The rest of the dead in Tanganyika, including a few thousand Indians troops and
uncounted thousand Africans in Tanga and Tanganyika were not important.

During WWI, African troops were sometimes left to rot in the sun. The Kaiser's
honour was much more important.

It was always very sad to come across little iron fenced graveyards for the

Walking thru the bush mapping and prospecting, one came across these cemeteries.
The same applied in the /Bukoba area later in 1964. There were no similar

Abdulrazak won the Nobel Price for his consistent description of the abuse
