[hlds] noob help

2006-08-12 Thread mrwrinkle

Ok, I'm an Idiot, but I'm trying to set up my first server.. I've got the
meta mod working, and the server running, but.. (1) I can't get any of my
admin rights to work.. maybe my user file is not set up right.. (2) can't
get bot's to work.. No plugins work.. basically I'm a mess.. all jacked up.
I've read everything that I could find and have tried everything, pushing
about 18 hours of my life I could have gotten back just to get my server to
recognize the metamod file. running off of steam client, dedicated
internet. If there is anyone out there that want's to help a noob out, I
would appreciate it, if not, that's cool.. I thought I was smarter than
this, but now I'm feeling like an idiot. any help would be cool. Thanks

Look it's a simple fix ,just log out of steam by changing user and re log on
and you wont get the error, it seems to be a periodict erro message. But
this should fix it

You guys can think whatever you want Im just trying to help out. Take
off the steambans client if you are getting the errors and see if they
go away. (They did for us and many other people)

Still dont believe that steambans causes the errors? Go look in their

Take off steambans and you wont have another problem with it. It sucks
because its been a known bug for at least a month (known that steambans
causes
it) and the steambans team claims they fixed it but its obvious they
havent..
Ever since I removed it last month I havent had a single problem with the
steamid verification error. Its too bad because they block a lot of
players
coming into the servers.
The only other option (and I didnt test this) would be to reboot the
machine
everyday. Since that clears up the problem when it starts, I would assume
that would allow you to keep running hte plugin and not get the errors.
But
who wants to reboot their machine every day?

Scott, I have noticed this problem on my server also. In fact, I have
noticed this problem from my client when I attempt to connect to other
servers! The problem is related to the client, not the server. The
client needs to logout of steam and then back in, then all is well.

I have several accounts (my whole family plays) and I think the steam
servers get nervous every once in a while and just flake
the auth for
the user, forcing them to sign back in.

Hope this helps.

The exact message is:

You have been disconnected from the server.
Reason: Error verifying STEAM UserID Ticket(server was unable
to contact
the suthentication server).

Why do my servers get this error every once in a while. The only
solution it seems is to reboot the whole server box. Does anyone else
get this?

EDIT: I went into the machine with vnc to reboot it. And one of the
source servers had crashed. I clicked the ok button and then
all of the
hlds servers worked again. Very odd behavior.

Take off steambans and you wont have another problem with it. It
sucks because its been a known bug for at least a month (known that
 steambans causes
it) and the steambans team claims they fixed it but its obvious they
 havent..
Ever since I removed it last month I havent had a single problem with
the steamid verification error. Its too bad because they block a lot
of players coming into the servers.
The only other option (and I didnt test this) would be to reboot the
machine everyday. Since that clears up the problem when it starts, I
would assume that would allow you to keep running hte plugin and not
 get the errors.
 But
who wants to reboot their machine every day?

Scott, I have noticed this problem on my server also. In fact, I have
noticed this problem from my client when I attempt to connect to other
servers! The problem is related to the client, not the server. The
client needs to logout of steam and then back in, then all is well.

I have several accounts (my whole family plays) and I think the steam
servers get nervous every once in a while and just flake
 the auth for

 Hope this helps.

If you have fps_max set to 1000, this can cause choppy fps and give you an
inaccurate result because the fps will bump into the cap and try and
adjust itself. If you cap the fps_max to something like 2000, the engine
will be allowed to run at its full 1000 fps without bumping into the cap
and sowing down.

2006-08-12 Thread Ooks Server

A few years ago I spent some time evaluating low end routers. I put Belkin
at the bottom of my list, below even dLink. However

Did the IP address of your server box change? Check it, compare to where you
have your ports forwarded from the router. That is the number one suspect.
Make sure the firewall in the router is off until you get the server
working, then turn it on and configure it.

Sveasoft has some after market firmwares for some Belkin routers, you might
want to check them out. www.sveasoft.com. See if they have any for your
model, see what the features are, you might find it helps. I use their
Talisman on my Linksys router, it runs for months and months, and I've never
had a problem with it as far as my HL servers go.

It's up and running. Looks like it's working right. I tried to connect and

However other players are already there. So I connected via dialup to the

So, this is the trick. After you install HL2MP, you take the files from

want to drop by? I'm running at 8 players now, I'm going to just let it sit
for a while, no mods, no nothing, just stock valve server, and see how
stable it is.

This is not conclusive proof because you have no sound and you have no
previous rounds from the player. I certainly don't think it proof of
which you could add him to a global banlist.

He may have been able to hear the gun that the guy was shooting. The
other player may consistently go that way so the player being spec'ed
had a good idea of where he would be. The wall shot he tries to make is
most probably a CS1.6 trait being that you cant really wall bang as much
in source and very few players do it. Also note the snap shot he tries
to make through the wall isn't actually on the enemy.

A lot of newer players are easy to read and if they find an attack
pattern that works for them they tend to stick to it. A seasoned player
as i'm sure many of you are will have a good idea what they are going to
do even before they decide to do it. The player being spec'ed may have
noticed that his enemy was going that way and picking off guys from that
vantage point. Viewing a demo with a wall hack on also tends to make a
spectator more biased.

As to Vac, you only realise how good vac is when you turn it off. Let
your public servers run a few days without Vac2 on and see what happens.
Yes vac isn't a great solution but it does help cut down a lot of
cheats. Steambans do a lot of good but. With global banlists there
is a small margin of error meaning false positives will be banned
unfairly. There was also the problem that Steam-ID's where showing
incorrectly in game servers a few months back meaning SteamBans may have
banned a number of players wrongly as the demos / screenshots could have
shown the wrong SteamID.

Add to this that a demo file can be altered and a screenshot can be
adjusted. Would you want your innocence put up for examination?

Scott, I have noticed this problem on my server also. In fact, I have
noticed this problem from my client when I attempt to connect to other
servers! The problem is related to the client, not the server. The
client needs to logout of steam and then back in, then all is well.

I have several accounts (my whole family plays) and I think the steam

 Hope this helps.

[hlds] acpi helps fps?

Are you suggesting that a non acpi hardware abstraction layer increases
server fps? This would be interesting, but I'm not sure why it would

Just ran a test box with non acpi install of 2003 web edtion, and can
confirm that it gives better fps and getting between 850 950 fps...
 bit different from 512! with fps_max 1000 :)

Test Box, was single barton xp2600 with 1 gig of ram, nforce2
chipset...nothing like our actual production server lol, wondering if
lauching a virtual machine in non acpi mode is possible..as sure don't
want to re-install the OS on the production box... have tried 2000fps
this didn't give any better results, infact would say that it made
no diffrence at all, so this probably is the limits of this set of
hardware.

If I have some time will test on overclocked machine to see if there
is any diffrence in performace with faster front side bus etc, maybe
try in vmware to see how bad it runs lol...

Re: [hlds] noob help

2006-08-12 Thread Robert Whelan
Your not very clear on whats 'NOT' working. Adminmod runs metamod which
will manage/load all your 'addons'. Double check all the .ini files and
make sure the files your loading match the directory structure your
running.

ie; addons/adminmod/modified/plugin_base.amx

If metamod isn't loading for you try to define it yourself in your
commandline.

ie; -game tfc -console +maxplayers 19 +map 2fort -dll
addons/metamod/dlls/metamod.dll +log on +secure 1

my examples are based on tfc/addons file structure

good luck, like many said..

its pretty easy once ya get things going

Which particular game is it for which you are setting up a server?

Take off
the steambans client if you are getting the errors and see if they go away.
(They did for us and many other people)

Still dont believe that steambans causes the errors? Go look in their
forums. Its right there in black and white.

Sheesh. You would think I insulted your mothers. Relax and open your minds
people.

I have several accounts (my whole family plays) and I think the steam
servers get nervous every once in a while and just flake
 the auth for
the user, forcing them to sign back in.

 Hope this helps.

Re: [hlds] acpi fps speedup probably a rare case

2006-08-12 Thread Gary

That has nothing to do with the original topic.. ACPI HAL manipulates
things like sleep() granularity, therefor you won't see good
performance.. only way to really get high precision sleep timers etc
in SMP is to use a real time OS, or don't use microsoft windows anymore.

It's an OS issue, not a bios issue.

for acpi information read the first article here:
http://www.dansdata.com/io039.htm

it looks like you may need to update your bios, but saying that disabling
acpi will increase fps looks like it may only apply to your box darn,
got my hopes up too.

If you have fps_max set to 1000, this can cause choppy fps and give you
an
inaccurate result because the fps will bump into the cap and try and
adjust itself. If you cap the fps_max to something like 2000, the engine
will be allowed to run at its full 1000 fps without bumping into the cap
 and sowing down.
