[JAWS-Users] create desktop item for eset

2016-12-28 Thread Lenny McHugh
How/where can I set up a desk top entry item for eset in both win 7 and win
10? The only icon for it is for the special banking browser.
Interesting installing it on both the win 7 and win 10 machines is that in
both cases it found and removed some junk.

[JAWS-Users] Running J17 Latest & J18 In Default Mode

2016-12-28 Thread Mike B.
Howdy Y'all,

For those that might not know this, & something I just learned today:
If you ever need to run J17 latest version, J17.0.2727, or J18 in default
mode you can do this using the Layered Keystrokes feature. Hold down the,
Insert / Jaws key, then press the spacebar, to open, Layered Keystrokes, now
release both keys, & press the letter, Z. This will put Jaws in default
settings mode. This series of keystrokes is a toggle, so invoke them again
to go back to running Jaws with your settings.
Note: This only works with the latest version of J17 & J18 all versions.
This will not work with any J17 versions prior to J17.0.2727.

Take care.

This has been discussed constantly for days on the BARD Talk list. I really
don't understand why everyone is so enamoured of it. People, not me, but
others, have been downloading 3 books simultaneously from the BARD site and
I've been using the Humanware Companion software to open and transfer zip
files of BARD and Bookshare books, several at a time, to an SD card or
cartridge for years. One doesn't have to open the Humanware folders to
transfer books with the companion software. The books go into the correct
folder automatically. I suspect that perhaps the only function that might be
slightly easier is actually downloading because you can always hear the
percentages. But I haven't tried it so I don't know. I might play around
again, now that Jim has provided this lovely screen reader friendly guide.
But I, who can barely do anything technilogically, can't figure out why so

Hi Judy,
The BARD express program, is very easy to use once you play around with it
for a minute or two. Being able to download multiple books at one time. And
having the ability to move multiple books at one time on to a flash drive
are awesome things for me.

Jim, thanks for this. I have gone through the directions and so far have
found the Bard Express more confusing than the regular Bard which I use
constantly every day at work. There are more options for sorting and such
which aren't necessary for everyone. I may play around with it more, but so
far I find it more difficult and more steps than the regular Bard. We will

Can you use emoticons in Microsoft word 2010 to indicate smiles sad faces,
happy faces etc.? If so, what key strokes in jaws 18 would I use to achieve
this? I am using a W10 computer with jaws 18. I don't know if anyone will
read what I am writing, but I'm having fun doing it anyway. Smile, Jim

[JAWS-Users] Solution For Alphabetically Organizing Internet Favorites In Internet Explorer

Hello, everyone.

Bill white from the JFW list did a Google search, and sent me the following
instructions for alphabetically organizing favorites in Internet Explorer
11.

Getting to the set of options is not intuitively obvious, but once I got
there, it was easy to do.

I have edited the instructions to make them more generic for list posting.

I hope they will benefit others.

Tom Behler

How to Organize Internet Favorites Alphabetically In Internet Explorer

Locate one of your individual favorites, then click your Applications key,
there will be an option in that context menu which will be labelled "Sort By
Name". Clicking this option is supposed to cause Favorites to be sorted
alphabetically while in Internet Explorer 11.

Can you use emoticons in Microsoft word 2010 to indicate smiles sad faces,

2016-12-28 Thread Mike B.
Howdy All,

Another way to access your Favorites folder is through the Owner / name
folder, which is found in the Users folder on the root of the C crive. To
get to this folder quickly do the followint:
1. Press, Windows key + R, to open the Run dialogue.
2. Type a single period, press enter, &, bam, you're there! If you type in
2 periods, & press enter that'll put you into your Users folder on the C
drive.
Take care.

Hi Wayne!

Sure, you can use Windows Explorer, which in my opinion is more
effective than using the favorites manager in Internet Explorer.

To get to your favourites, tab over to the folders pane in Windows
explorer, The entry below libraries is usualy you user account, if you
expand it, one of the sub folders will be called favorites, click or
press enter on it and the files pane will now show your favorite.

You can now create folders and move your favorites into them. You can
also easily rename and delete them.

However, when I bring up internet Explorer 11, the favorites are not

The critical step in this IE process is to place focus against a favorite.
That's where this method has failed me in the past. Thanks for making it clear.
Usually, when organizing a list by name, I ensure no item is in focus.

The sort order of the favorites in Windows Explorer is a separate setting from
their sort order in Internet Explorer.

To set the favorites into alphabetical order in Internet Explorer, first launch
Internet Explorer, then press Alt + A to bring up the favorites, then move the
highlight to a favorite, then press the application key (same as a right
click), then browse the context menu that pops up and press Enter on the Sort
by Name option.

Unfortunately you have to do this for each favorites folder and after adding a
new favorite, except that when you add a new favorite, you only have to reapply
the Sort by Name option on the folder where you saved the new favortite.

I do wish Microsoft would allow us to choose a default sort order that is
automatically applied so we wouldn't have to keep doing it after adding new
favorites.

Cheers!

Re: [JAWS-Users] How To Alphabetically Organize InternetFavorites InInternet Explorer

2016-12-28 Thread wayne smith
Hello Jim and Co.

When I first used the Favorites list I did not know that they could be
organized in specific folders; shopping, faith, politics and so on. Is
there a way to move favortes to newly created folders? I have a large
number of favorites so would it be practical even if possible?

I tested Favorites by "clicking" on Organize Favorites near the top of the
Favorites list. I selected New Folder and it appeared at the end of the
list. Then I hit the letter n a few times to get me to the new folder, hit
the Applications key and selected sort by name. My new list nestled right in
the N's..I think that when you sort one folder, all in the main level sort.
To sort fubdirectories within a main directory just repeat the sort process.

I haven't had any alphabetizing issues in years.

That only works for the top level of favorites. If you have your
favorites organized into folders as I do, then you have to sort each
folder as a separate operation.

Unlike with the desktop, Microsoft didn't see fit to provide the option
of a perpetually enforced sort order for all favorites like they did the
desktop and in Windows Explorer.

Cheers!

Currently, my favorites are not listed alphabetically. Instead, they

the bottom of the list.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How To Alphabetically Organize Internet Favorites InInternet Explorer

2016-12-28 Thread Gene Warner
The sort order of the favorites in Windows Explorer is a separate
setting from their sort order in Internet Explorer.

To set the favorites into alphabetical order in Internet Explorer, first
launch Internet Explorer, then press Alt + A to bring up the favorites,
then move the highlight to a favorite, then press the application key
(same as a right click), then browse the context menu that pops up and
press Enter on the Sort by Name option.

Unfortunately you have to do this for each favorites folder and after
adding a new favorite, except that when you add a new favorite, you only
have to reapply the Sort by Name option on the folder where you saved
the new favortite.

I do wish Microsoft would allow us to choose a default sort order that
is automatically applied so we wouldn't have to keep doing it after
adding new favorites.

Cheers!

However, when I bring up internet Explorer 11, the favorites are not listed

I tested Favorites by "clicking" on Organize Favorites near the top of
the Favorites list. I selected New Folder and it appeared at the end of
the list. Then I hit the letter n a few times to get me to the new
folder, hit the Applications key and selected sort by name. My new list
nestled right in the N's..I think that when you sort one folder, all in
the main level sort. To sort fubdirectories within a main directory
just repeat the sort process.

I haven't had any alphabetizing issues in years.

Can you use emoticons in Microsoft word 2010 to indicate smiles sad faces,

this? I am using a W10 computer with jaws 18. I don't know if anyone will

Hi Jaws users list. I want to thank the people who let me know about the
BARD express program. I think this program will make it much easier for
members to download and move books to a flash drive. The program works great
with Jaws. Below are the get started and the users guide for the BARD
express program. Please enjoy.

Welcome to BARD Express

This document will help to get you started using BARD Express, a software
program that makes it easier to download, save, and read books from BARD,
the

NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download website.

Logging in for the first time

To start using BARD Express, sign in to the software using your existing
BARD credentials, which are your email address and password. If you do not
yet

have a BARD account, visit the following website to apply for one:

https://nlsbard.loc.gov/cgi-bin/public/nlsbardprod/accountrequest.cgi?libcod
e=NLS

Navigating BARD Express

There are two distinct ways to work with BARD Express.

Standard View

1. Navigate the Main menu by pressing the Tab key to move between the
submenus, which include Bookshelf, Wish List, Most Recently Added Books and
Magazines,

Most Popular Books, and more. If you use screen-reading software and a
keyboard, you can navigate the menu by pressing the Tab key to move between
submenus

and by pressing the Enter key to open one of the submenus.

2. After you have opened a submenu, use the arrow keys to navigate through
title lists and press the Enter key to explore a book's details. Once a
book's

detail screen has been opened, use the Tab key to hear the author, narrator,
annotation, and more.

3. Use the buttons at the bottom of the book's detail screen to download the
title or add/remove it from your Wish List. Select the button, then press

the Enter key or the spacebar. To return to the top of the book's detail
screen, hit Tab. Another button at the top of the page will allow you to
return

to the list of titles screen.

Advanced View

A second way to work with BARD Express is to use the Advanced View. This
view presents more information on a title without having to press Enter to
get

the book details.

1. Navigate the Main menu and open a submenu such as Most Recently Added
Books and Magazines the same way as in the Standard View.

2. Switch to the Advanced View by using the keyboard command Control+L
(press the ConttrolControl and L keys at the same time). As you down-arrow
through

a list of titles, you will hear the book's title, its author and narrator,
and its description.

3. Press the spacebar to select one or more books.

4. Download or add your selections to the Wish List by choosing the
appropriate button or use the assigned shortcut key.

Exploring the Menu Bar

The BARD Express Menu Bar contains three selections: Files, View, and Help.

The Files Menu

This menu lets you log in and out of your BARD account. If you want to log
out of your account, open the Files menu and choose Log Out. BARD Express
will

ask if you're sure you want to log out. Choose Log Out if that is your
intention or choose Remain Logged In if you wish to remain logged in to your
account.

The View Menu

This menu contains shortcuts to the Main menu and submenus such as
Bookshelf, Wish List, and Preferences.

From within the View menu, you can select Items Per Page, which lets you

choose the number of titles you want BARD Express to display at one time.
The

View menu also lets you increase or decrease the font size used in lists of
titles and book detail pages.

At the bottom of the View menu is an item called Column Configuration.
Choosing this item allows you to control how much of a book's information
displays

directly on the list screen or is read by your screen-reading software as
you navigate from

Regarding the differences between office 2010 and office 2016, there are
distinct variations.
In Microsoft Word and in Outlook, the editing functions are quite different.
In Office 2010, you can use keystrokes to enter your instructions. For
example, ALT+C = Change, ALT+A = ADD TO DICTIONARY, ETC. OFFICE 2016
requires that you tab through the options and use the spacebar to confirm
your choice.
If you copy text from another source and try to paste it into Microsoft
Word, you are asked to choose how the paste is to be handled. You can make
permanent changes to this dialog, of course.
Other than that, there isn't much difference on the front end. Internally,
there are significant changes.
Saving a file is no longer as easy as it was in 2010. But, those changes do
make it easier to make sure that the file ends up in the right folder.

That's all I can think of right now. I'll post again if I think of anything
else.

VERY IMPORTANT! It is possible to obtain Office 2016 on disk but
downloading it from the web is a serious pain in the butt. The easiest way
is to create a Microsoft.com identity. If not, there are many security
measures which impact screen reader users.

Hello list,

So a companion post to my message from a few days ago. I bought a tower
Windows 10 desktop and am now considering on whether to get an Office 2010
license key for it which I am currently using on my other systems and am
familiar with or if there is any benefit in getting a 2013 or 2016 version.
Is there anything in the newer versions of Office, in particular Outlook,
Word, Excel that would merit trying one of them out?

Learning curve aside, are there any substantial issues or quirks with Jaws
and the newer versions of Office. From time to time, I recall threads having
to do with this or that Office 2013/2016 and JFW issue, but as it didn’t
affect me, I didn’t pay them much attention. I’m running the latest 12/5/17
JFW update.

I plan on buying the32 bit version since there’s no real advantage of
getting the 64 bit one even though the machine will be 64 bit.

Any input would be appreciated.

thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using the new BARD express program

2016-12-28 Thread Jim
The BARD express is a stand alone program that you install on your computer
from the BARD site. You can access BARD directly through the program. There
are many advantages to using the BARD express program to download and
transfer books to your flash drive. Learn more about it on the BARD main
page, the heading for BARD express is down towards the bottom of the main
page. Good luck and Happy new year.

I am familiar with the BARD site. Is the BARD Express a new facet of the
original one? Forgive the lack of knowledge on this. Jerry

If you do not
yet

have a BARD account, visit the following website to apply for one:

https://nlsbard.loc.gov/cgi-bin/public/nlsbardprod/accountrequest.cgi?libcod
e=NLS

Another button at the top of the page will allow you to
return

to the list of titles screen.

Choosing this item allows you to control how much of a book's information
displays

directly on the list screen or is read by your screen-reading software as
you navigate from title to title using Advanced View.

The Help Menu

This menu contains three items: Help, About, and Getting Started.

Choose Help to access the help information for your current window. Close

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using the new BARD express program

2016-12-28 Thread Humberto Rodriguez
It is a new program that a programmer who has a blind wife and daughter
wrote for their use and donated to NLS for the use of all, so it became
available this month. It simplifies gretly the searching and downloading,
is totally accessible and has certain improvements, for instance, to be able
to download an entire series at once.

You download and install it from the NLS BARD website.
