Re: [JAWS-Users] Print view in MS word
Brian, This is useful information, as always, but it does seem a bit complicated. When I do a control-f search, JAWS reads the current line as soon as the result is found. It's critical not to press any key until JAWS has verbalized that line, or else JAWS gives only the option to search for the next result, with an indication of the total number of results for that search in the document. Having heard the line of text, I have two options. Either I press the spacebar to move to the next result or press escape to go to re-read and possibly edit the text. As you explain, the control-f search doesn't land you directly in the text field. If I elected to stop the search to check that text but then decide to continue searching for that same item, I press control-f again. The same search term is still there, so I just press enter. I'm taken to the next instance of that search term. Once again, the current line of text is verbalized, and I have the same two choices: press escape to go into the text or press spacebar to resume searching. The alternative, of course, is a JAWS find, adding the JAWS key to control-f. In this case, JAWS stays in the text when it finds a result, so you can edit right away. To resume searching for the same term, press JAWS key-F3. Each type of search, Microsoft's and JAWS's, has advantages. I'm afraid this doesn't address John's concern that the escape key no longer cancels his search operations. I don't have an answer for that. I'm using Office 2010, JAWS 18 (last but one release) and Win7. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brian Lee Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2017 11:06 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Print view in MS word Hello John, It is really best to work in print view when using Word. Print view is my default, and I believe it is recommended for accessibility. When another view comes up, as sometimes happens, I press alt-control-p to return to print view. As for the find function, you're right, the escape key used to work. In word 2010, it still does for me. I don't know why my having a Win7 machine would make a difference. Perhaps it does. Hi Subash, I did recreate my scenario with the laptop keyboard. So, here's what I have discovered. I get my weird keyboard behavior when using the control & shift key combination with a specific key (depending on what application I am using) and this is true with the external keyboard or the laptop keyboard. For example, I can use the ctrl+shift+end key in notepad to select a block of text and this weird behavior will not be created. However, I can use the same key combination in Windows Live Mail and it will create this weird behavior. This is when using JAWS. This weird keyboard behavior does not appear to be evident when using NVDA. I tried this feature out several times a year ago, I could not get it to work for me. But lo-and-behold, it worked this time. I chose to keep my files. So after waiting for 90 minutes or so, I was on the log-in screen. Of course the refresh feature removed more than 20 programs and apps on my computer including all Freedom Scientific products, all the Jaws versions, the F S reader and much more. The benefit of doing a refresh, it reloads the windows operating system files new and fresh. So I had to turn off all live tiles and remove them from start. I had to uninstall all unwanted apps. I had to turn off all the background apps that I did not want turned on. I had to install Jaws and put my authorization code back into the Jaws activate window. I had to download and set up my office 365 again, I had to set up my outlook 2016 email accounts again. LOL. But I believe this has fixed the issues I encountered after trying to manually update to the creators update and failing to do so. So hopefully with any luck, my computer will get updated to the creators update when it comes to my computer. I have learned my lesson, no more manually trying to update to the creators update, I will just wait. Re: [JAWS-Users] A Weird Issue.
(in any application) So, my conclusion for my particular weird keyboard behavior is that when using JAWS, this behavior is created in whatever application based on the key combination being used for either laptop or common in the keyboard configuration manager for any key combination using ctrl+shift. I am not a computer wiz so this is my spectculative opinion only. I will just continue to use my work around of hitting the ctrl+shift keys together when this weird behavior occurs. That is unless I actually figure out how to fix it. I hope this helps you some or at least gets you pointed in the right direction. Let me know if you figure out how to correct this behavior. marvin -Original Message- From: Subash Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2017 11:47 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] A Weird Issue. Subash, My external keyboard has been doing this stuff ever since it's been connected to a Dell laptop using Win 8.1 and now Win 10 64 bit, version 1607 with JAWS latest build. My keyboard does this whenever I perform an action that requires a combination of the control & shift keys together, i.e. like ctrl+shift+end to select a section of text. The keyboard immeadiately starts to do the same thing you described. I found a work around which is I hit the control and shift keys again and it restores the keyboard back to normal operation. I have yet to figure out why the keyboard does this. I can't remember for sure, and I will test it again, but I don't recall the keyboard doing this when using NVDA. I now just try to find work arounds when having to use the control & shift key combinations. The keyboard doesn't do this weird stuff any other time. If you get a definite answer, I would love to hear it as well. [JAWS-Users] Using the Refresh this PC in W-10
Good morning Jaws users list, I was finally able to get the refresh this PC, to work for me. So if any of you decide to use this refresh your PC feature in W-10, know you will have to reinstall Jaws and much more. Read below and see what all was removed on my computer after I successfully completed the refresh my PC process. So please be aware of this if you use the refresh feature. I think that this should fix all my issues I was having after the failed update to the creators update. hello; you can perform a shutdown from the desktop, also, you could, windows+x, up arrow enter on, shutdown or sign out sub-menu, or, you could create a shutdown shortcut/hotkey. This is the best way to shutdown, because windows snaps an image of your pc, when it was running, so on next start up the pc starts faster. [JAWS-Users] A look back at history:
On this list, there have been references to "Freedom Scientific". The company which preceded the current company. Which now owns our adaptive screen reading and magnification products. I think it might be of interest to the newer users of Jaws to know: "Freedom Scientific" was not the first company to own Jaws. The first was "Henter Joyce". Founded by Ted Henter, and, I believe Dean Blazy. It might also interest you to know, Ted henter was blind. He sold the company. to illustrate again how successful we blind people can be. If we just reach for the stars, and develop our fullest potential. Which we do all the time. How far Jaws has come from the time when its initials meant Job Access With Speech. Young people, now days, are indeed fortunate to be able to accomplish, with so much more ease, things which much more effort was taken to achieve a half century ago. Prior to the use of the internet, and when our only printing device was the typewriter. Though, then, once a skill was learned, one could rely on being able to employ that skill for years. Now, it seems, with such rapid changes, it seems new skills must be learned constantly. To accomplish the same things? Hi, Angel. It was obviously intended for a friend and posted in error. It can happen. It happened once to me on this list, although you'll be relieved to know that my accidental post wasn't about religion. Re: [JAWS-Users] flexible website
The fact is if people want such signature lines or any kind of tag line we mostly ask if they would keep them short and not make another entire message out of them. With over 660 members on here it is safe to bet we have all faiths represented. Long drawn out signature lines mostly serve to increase bandwidth usage and although it has never been a problem so far when I monitor traffic there are spikes now and then. -Original Message- From: Angel238 Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2017 7:38 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] flexible website I feel I need to remind those on this list, it is not a religious list. Using new W10, NVDA, current browser IE. Noticing that now my PC takes several minutes to restart when I restar my PC. Before it was very fast. What can I do to make it fast again. Did disc cleaning. There is sometime in start where you can go to uncheck apps to run unless you do it manually. Help please. Was able to do so with W7. Re: [JAWS-Users] flexible website
What a beautiful service! I started reading through it this morning, but had visitors and then took a nap so that I would be OK for tonight. I love how the Jewish Passover flows over into our Lord's last supper. How I love the Saviour! die on the cross tomorrow" and "Did Jesus eat a lot the night before?" and "I wouldn't have forgiven them", referring to the soldiers and those who sentenced him to death. I know that they sound like irreverent comments, but my Dad really does respect my faith, and often, his humour is what he uses when he's either uncomfortable with those or feeling a deep emotion. Erika will verify this because she knows him well. Can you please pray especially, this Easter, that Our Lord and Saviour will give him a new understand of what His crucifixion really means for him personally, and for us as a family? I am praying that Dad will make that last remark again and that God will give me the words to explain that the whole point of Jesus' death was to forgive all mankind of our sins.
