Screen Shade for Additional Privacy For additional privacy, use the JAWS Screen Shade to prevent others from seeing what you are typing or reading by turning the screen black. This feature is available in Windows 10 and Windows 8. To turn on the Screen Shade, press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by the PRINTSCREEN key, or triple tap with three fingers on a touch screen. Alternatively, Screen Shade can be toggled on or off using Quick Settings (INSERT+V). Once enabled, the contents of your screen can no longer be seen. The Screen Shade remains active until toggled back off, or JAWS is restarted. Screen Shade can also be turned off by doing a right mouse click. Note: Screen Shade is strictly a privacy feature and will not increase the battery life on a laptop or tablet. Additionally, Screen Shade is only available when JAWS is running by itself. It cannot be used when running Fusion, or when running JAWS together with ZoomText or MAGic. Speech On Demand Speech On Demand is a feature that allows you to limit the amount of JAWS speech you hear as you navigate windows and documents or perform other actions using hot keys. By default, when using Speech On Demand, JAWS only announces actions that are associated with a limited set of hot keys. In addition, mouse echo and typing echo are still available, which allows JAWS to read text that you point to with the mouse pointer and speak characters and words as you type. You can quickly toggle between Speech On Demand and full speech using a convenient layered command, or even make Speech On Demand the default speech mode when JAWS starts. For JAWS users who rely heavily on Braille or for users of Fusion that can see well enough to use the screen for tracking focus, too much speech can be overwhelming while navigating using the keyboard and mouse. However, users still want to be able to use speech to read once they have moved to a location on the screen, or just checking a Window Title, column heading in a table or spread sheet, or even reading the time from the System tray. In both these situations, Speech On Demand can be very helpful. You will find that switching applications with ALT+TAB or using ARROW keys to move through a document are silenced. Speech is only triggered when using a limited set of reading commands such as speaking the current character, word, line, paragraph, or doing a Say All. Hi Mary, In most cases, at the beginning of a Jaws install, the user is advised to make sure all screen-readers and magnification programs are shut down before continuing with the install. That being said, I always have Jaws running during an install, but using a different screen-reader could have unexpected side effects. HTH, Rick Justice "Tomorrow's another day, another way!" Because of issues I was having, I've been using NVDA exclusively, but I want to install this build and see if it helps. Can I do so with NVDA running? Is JAWS smart enough to know I have a screen reader running and don't want its self voicing install? Then once it is installed, I assume it goes over the top of my existing 2018 and when I launch it, any settings I saved will be present, and I can see how this new build goes?? Thanks. And yes. Now its time for me to report two very disturbing bugs. The first bugg was already fixed in JAWS 18 and it has returned in the latest update of JAWS 2018. Secondly when I try to reply to any mail, I cannot read what I type. At the moment when I’m replying this mail, I’m using Narrator. Layered commands to toggle the feature: list of 2 items . Press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by S to toggle the speech mode between Full Speech and either Speech On Demand (the default) or Mute speech. Focus braille display users can also press RIGHT SHIFT+M (DOTS 1-3-4) to toggle between Speech On Demand and Full Speech. . Press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by SHIFT+S while Full Speech is disabled to toggle between Speech On Demand and Mute speech. list end By default, JAWS always returns to Full Speech when restarted after these keystrokes have been used. To make permanent changes to the default settings, do the following: list of 10 items 1. Press INSERT+F2, and select Settings Center. 2. If you want changes to only apply to a particular application, select it from the Application list. Otherwise, press CTRL+SHIFT+D to load the default settings file. 3. Layered commands to toggle the feature: list of 2 items . Press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by S to toggle the speech mode between Full Speech and either Speech On Demand (the default) or Mute speech. Focus braille display users can also press RIGHT SHIFT+M (DOTS 1-3-4) to toggle between

Hi Inamuddin, It would be impossible for 1 person to test these updates. Everyone would have to be running the same operating systems, programs, use the same settings., & that still wouldn't satisfy everyone! Alittle tought before making such a statement as you have done needs to take a little more thought. If you would like to take up the cause, go for it! Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Re: [JAWS-Users] J2018.1712.10 Update Direct Download Links + What's New
This is probably a stupid question I have downloaded the update for Jaws 2018 that came out today. Because of issues I was having, I've been using NVDA exclusively, but I want to install this build and see if it helps. Can I do so with NVDA running? Is JAWS smart enough to know I have a screen reader running and don't want its self voicing install? Then once it is installed, I assume it goes over the top of my existing 2018 and when I launch it, any settings I saved will be present, and I can see how this new build goes?? Thanks. And yes. Layered commands to toggle the feature: list of 2 items . Press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by S to toggle the speech mode between Full Speech and either Speech On Demand (the default) or Mute speech. Hi Inamuddin, Well if you don't like me giving the list updates, then don't open them! If you have a problem report it to Freedom Scientific / VFO because if they don't know about them they can't fix them. And furthermore, if you think you can do a better job, you just let me know & you can take over! I do this to save people time, & since it only takes a few extra minutes to pass on the information most list members from this list & from other lists' appreciate it, but like I said, if you don't like them, don't open them, or do all the testing & posting of the updates yourself! Thanks for all the advice, guys. It's been a real help. I'm sure I'll be asking quite a few questions within the next few months, since I'll be transferring from a portable note-taker over to a laptop with Braille display as my primary device. Jim's tutorials on Windows 10 are going to come in very handy. Cheers! Re: [JAWS-Users] disappointed with new jaws
Sorry about that, I was just saying for some of us that work with specialized hardware for example my hardware that tests speaker drivers I have to use win 7 as win 10 doesn't like it. So my shop PC runs win 7 and my home PC runs win10. If I want win 10 in my shop I will have to upgrade the tester and that is money I don't need to spend when win 7 does everything I need it too at the shop. Win 10 is just a OS trying to act like a smart phone trying to be a social platform... Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS2018 & Windows10 -Login & BitLocker
I am using Jaws 2018 build 1710.42. It did improve some issues on my personal laptop, but has done nothing to address issues at work. I heard that there was an update that came out today. I'll give it a try, but I really think it has more to do with the security policies at work. Frequently JAWS appears to be clipped when it initially launches prior to the login screen. When this happens, JAWS does not come back until after the user has logged in and they are on the desktop. So one thing I am asking that IT look at is the launch order. Am I barking up an empty tree? Is there a way to change this order? I've been attempting to use Control+Windows+Enter to turn on Narrator at the login screen, but it will not launch. In addition, sometimes BitLocker comes up and wants some type of action from the user. Besides figuring out what is triggering what now appears to be a random launching of BitLocker, I am looking for any tips on how a JAWS user can get through BitLocker when it does come up. I'm guessing that there is not a solution. Some of us rely on programs that arent always well behaved on win 10. I have a tester for speaker drivers that wont run on win 10. I am not going to buy another tester, the hardware is not cheap (waste of resources) when win 7 works just fine. My home pc does run win 10 though. Hello, you are right. I was not a tech person for many years and I simply didn't understand the importance of staying abreast of changes. Now that I am on the other side of the fence I continually come across clients who would like to return to the work force and do not have the skills to be competitive or efficient in the work place. This is very discouraging for them and sometimes a deal breaker for more training. Thankfully there are lists like this around for people to share their knowledge on. Re: [JAWS-Users] disappointed with new jaws
Yes, all that is certainly true. NVDA is also fazing out support for older operating systems. It comes to a point where you may as well just use the old versions. Why bother to continue updating your software if none of the new features work for you? I used an XP machine for a really long time (until early this year in fact) even though I was on Windows 7 and then 10 at work. A lot of people want to hang on to Windows 7 and that's certainly understandable. But new features are designed to work with new products and that's always the way it's been. I'm sure many besides myself remember when everyone in the sighted world was switching to Windows 3.1 and screen-reader support was minimal and patchy at best. Eventually, we all caught up, but it took quite some time. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Nathaniel Kile Sent: December 12, 2017 1:52 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] disappointed with new jaws Hello, You do have a point. Re: [JAWS-Users] Annoying Internet Explorer.
hmmm, if you place firefox on the server I may give your version a try, the one I am using at this time has a very anoying problem in that everytime I go to sendspace to the download page of a file, i get the one mmoment screen and i have a pop-up of mediakey or another page that I have to always dismiss before I can continue with my download process. May give chrome a try again also in hopes of getting rid of this anoyance, lol! All of a sudden I lose either speech, or the web page won't resolve itself, then I get some kind of problem message with IE that differs slightly from one incident to another, with the final announcement that IE is closing. Sometimes closing the program puts me where I want to be on the site in the first place, but not always. Are there any helps for this? IS this the way IE interfaces with Jaws, or is this just IE not getting support? Thanks for your help. Besides figuring out what is triggering what now appears to be a random launching of BitLocker, I am looking for any tips on how a JAWS user can get through BitLocker when it does come up. I'm guessing that there is not a solution. Re: [JAWS-Users] Annoying Internet Explorer.
Hi David That's good to know. It's beneficial for us to try out this software from time to time and try to figure things out; determine what works and what doesn't. If nobody gives feedback, I imagine nothing will ever get done. [JAWS-Users] JAWS2018 & Windows10 -Login & BitLocker
Hi All, We are continuing to have problems with logging into the Windows10 Dell 7440 test machine at work. Thanks David. The Tips and Tricks site noted was news to me but was easy to find and, indeed, has many helpful topics accessible with quick key navigation as well. http://www.jaws-users.com/text/ Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: David Ferrin Sent: Tuesday, December 12, 2017 4:44 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Annoying Internet Explorer.
