Re: [JAWS-Users] some Gmail function questions

2017-06-06 Thread John M.
I am guessing that you are using Gmail in the HTML view. Many of the Gmail
instructions assume that you are using Standard view, which does not work as
well for screen reader users. I have done what you are trying to do using
standard view. It's sometimes not easy, but with determination, it can be
done.

When you are done deleting the messages, just switch back to HTML view.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] some Gmail function questions

I'm using a Windows 7 computer with the latest version of JAWS 16 and IE
11. I want to delete large groups of emails from my In Box and found
instructions for doing so on Google. However, I'm having difficulty
finding the options that the article says I should find.

First, there seems to be an option to turn on keyboard short cuts in the
Settings menu, but when I open the Settings menu, I don't find that
option. Where is it? Can I not find it because I'm using IE instead of
Chrome?

When trying to delete a batch of message, it says to type in the name of
the messages in the upper Search field. I can do that, It then says to
check a select box. I can find a select button but no check box. Once
that is checked, there's supposed to be a way to select all the messages.
I can't find that option.

Once that is selected, there is supposed to be a delete button at the top
of the page. Again, I can't seem to find that.

It has only just occurred to me that this might go better in Chrome, but
failing that, any suggestions on how I can better navigate Gmail with
JAWS?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Downgrading to JAWS 16

2017-05-25 Thread John M.

Hi Gene,

I have been using Jaws since version 5. Over the years, I have found that
some versions of Jaws are very good and others are junk. In my opinion,
version 17 is junk. I had upgraded from Jaws 15 to 17. After the upgrade, I
had nothing but problems. After several months of struggling, I eventually
installed version 16 and that is what I am still using today. I tried
version 18 for a short while, but it was still not as stable and reliable as
version 16. I am using Windows 7 also. One more thing...I still use Office
2003, because I just like it a lot. Jaws version 17 support for Office 2003
was terrible.

I always go back to a saying that I have used for years--"Just because you
can doesn't mean you should.". Just because there is a new version of
Windows or Office or Jaws or any other piece of software or hardware,
doesn't mean you have to rush to install it or purchase it. I rely on my
computer on a daily basis to do my job and service my clients. I demand that
my core software is extremely stable and reliable. I have Jaws SMAs through
version 20. I don't know if I will actually switch to those versions. Time
will tell.

Best,
John

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Downgrading to JAWS 16

Hi everyone!

Back in 2013, when I was finally declared legally blind and had to switch
from Zoom Text to JAWS, JAWS was at version 15.

As I recall, other than having to learn it on my own because the
Lighthouse here is a bad joke, there were few, if any problems I had with
it, it just worked. JAWS 16 was pretty much the same but with the addition
of the very useful command search function.

Then came JAWS 17 with the apparent almost complete rewrite of the engine.
From there it seemed like every time I turned around I was running into
another misfunction of JAWS. Version 18, when it came out wasn't much
better.

So, after long thought, as well as fighting an apparently recalcitrant
version of JAWS, I've finally decided to install version 16 to see how it
compares to version 18. If it works as well as my memory of it recalls, I
will eventually uninstall JAWS 18, and consider not maintaining my SMA
anymore. Besides my dissatisfaction with versions 17 and 18, it seems like
most of the enhancements are for Windows 10 and have no effect on my
Windows 7 system which I have no plans to upgrade. If things do change for
the better in the future, I can always reestablish a new SMA.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this idea or has already
preceded me in downgrading back to version 16.

Thanks!

2017-05-13 Thread John M.

Hi John,

In my opinion, you are better off just using the security software that is
built-in to Windows 10. It is the equivalent of Microsoft Security
Essentials. This is the only security software, along with Malwarebytes,
that I have used on my and my clients computers for the past seven
years--with no problems. On my computers, I still use the old, accessible
version of Malwarebytes. I am even beginning to question the necessity for
Malwarebytes--and not even from the standpoint that they just can't seem to
get accessibility right. Of course, your browsing and email habits can make
a big difference in the security of your computer.

Re: [JAWS-Users] java and jaws

2017-04-15 Thread John M.
It is highly unlikely that you need Java installed on your computer. You are
confusing Java with JavaScript. The later is a scripting language that is a
part of the web browser and enables web developers to do all sorts of zany
things and drive us screen reader users crazy. On the other hand, Java is a
full blown programming language for developing applications. Most home users
do not need Java installed. I removed it from my computers in 2010 and have
never had the need to reinstall it. I never install it on any of my clients
computers and have never received a call from anyone asking to install Java
to resolve a problem with an application that they wanted to run. Java is a
security nightmare and unless you absolutely need it, do not install it. If
you already have it installed, remove it. If you find that you need it at
some point in the future, it can be easily reinstalled.

Hi Tom,

You are correct. I just tried it with FF 52 and Jaws 16 and I could only
access settings in the General section. I know that this was not the case
with earlier versions of FF. I then shutdown Jaws and fired up NVDA--I was
able to get to all settings, including the hardware acceleration setting.
So, you might want to give NVDA a try, in order to get that setting changed.

Re: [JAWS-Users] using fire fox as your default browser.

2017-03-07 Thread John M.
Navigation keystrokes are all the same. Two quirks that I have always
noticed with Firefox: 1. Once a page loads, it is sometimes necessary to tab
once to get into the page. 2. It is often necessary to use the Jaws refresh
screen command (Jaws key + ESCape), in order to be able to properly access
all of the elements on the page. Also, when Jaws has trouble navigating a
page in Firefox, NVDA will often give better access to the page. Overall,
using Firefox instead of IE is a very good move.

It might be possible that the list has run its’ course. It is 11 years old

Let’s see how things go for a while before any major decisions are made so

If your computer is running normally, with no obvious problems, my best

Optionally, you can go into the Windows Update program and look under the

Windows Update service recommends for your computer. Unless you are adding
cutting-edge hardware to your computer, most Windows 7 drivers have been

If it's not broke, don't try to fix it.

You are correct, FoxIt is not accessible using a screen reader.

If Jaws cannot read the screen aloud, it will not display the screen

Hello gang.
Fox It reader seems to be completely inaccessible to JAWS for reading PDF
documents. My company forces us to open certain internal PDF's in Fox IT
reader. JAWS does not even access the menu much less read and navigate
anything in the PDF. Has anyone using JAWS hooked a Braille display to

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 17 and Windows Mail Issue

2016-04-19 Thread John M.
Hi all,
I use the Windows Mail client on my Windows 7 computer. This is not Windows
Live Mail, but the Windows Mail client that is part of Win 7, but disabled by
default. Ever since I upgraded to Jaws 17, when in a message (either composing
or reading) and tab through the To, CC and BCC fields, jaws says Picture1,
Picture2, etc, instead of announcing the names/email addresses. I can read the
names/email addresses using the Jaws cursor, but I would love to have this
working the way it did prior to Jaws 17. Has anyone come across this issue and
is there a fix?

Thanks,
John

Re: [JAWS-Users] Never10, Leo Laporte Recommends This Program / Tool For Stopping Windows 7 &8 From Updating To Windows 10

2016-04-04 Thread John M.

A quick tip:
When you run the Never10 program, it will make a chime sound. At this point,
you can press Alt-D and the program will make another chime sound. The
program has disabled any future Windows 10 upgrade nags from Microsoft. Then
press Alt-F4 to exit the program and you are all done. If, in the future,
you want to upgrade to Windows 10, just run the Never10 program again and
press Alt-E. This will enable the ability to upgrade to Windows 10. I have
already used this utility on a bunch of computers and it worked perfectly.
As Mike mentioned, you can use the Jaws cursor to read what is on the
screen, but you really don't have to, in order to get the benefit of this
program. One note is that NVDA sees nothing on the screen when this program
is running.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] A Website inconsistency

Can anyone suggest why two of us with similar systems are getting
different results on the same website? Unfortunately, I can't give a link
because the company involved is working with us to fix accessibility
issues. The company recently sent us a link to a new page where they
believe they have made their video player's controls accessible. The
webpage works for my colleague, but not well for me. Here are some
details.

We both have Win7 machines, and I believe my colleague's is 64-bit like
mine. While he uses JAWS 16 only, I get the same results whether I use 16
or 17.

When you click on this webpage, the video starts almost immediately. No
problem there. But we want access to the pause button because the videos
are quite long. In the past, neither of us was able to access this button.
On the new page, my colleague can do so easily, while I have to play some
non-intuitive tricks to get there. Once again, more details.

My colleague can get to this button with the quick navigation key f and by
arrowing around. (I'm not clear if "b" works for him.) In my case, no
quick navigation keys land on the button, and arrowing down the page
doesn't get JAWS to verbalize it.

However, I discovered by chance that if I have focus on a certain link
near the bottom of the page and shift-tab once, the pause button suddenly
appears. Once I've done that, the pause button appears when I arrow
around. However, the quick navigation keys still don't locate it. for the
record, once JAWS found the pause button, it worked as expected.

One more note. After I close the window and reopen it, the pause button
vanishes. I have to go through the same procedure to get it to show up.

When a button is this hard to find, and when finding it involves such a
random process, I don't consider it accessible. However, it is accessible
on my colleague's system.

Any ideas why the inconsistency?

Re: [JAWS-Users] More testing of Jaws 17

2016-02-05 Thread John M.
I'm using the latest Jaws 17 64-bit on Windows 7 with no lag/delay problems.
Upgrading to JFW 17 did require that I completely remove all previously
installed FS products and then do a clean install. The one problem that I am
having is with PDF files. For no apparent reason, JFW keeps jumping back to
the top of the page or the top of the file. No such problem when reading the
same file using NVDA. I did not experience this issue when using JFW 14.

Jim,
I am not in Windows 10 but Windows 7 with JAWS 17 and Office 365.
I have experienced the 10 second or more silence in JAWS 17. I at first
assumed it was due to having both MAGic and JAWS in the same machine
which,

of course, run perfectly together.
However, I am seeing some instances on this list of the instances of JAWS
going silent.
I just switched to JAWS 16 and updated to the 16.0.4468 update.
So far I believe it is executing more quickly but time will tell if it
eliminates the pauses. More later.

So, I started out using the latest Jaws 16, and then switched to using the

Let me know if any of you have noticed the following intermittent lockup

When pressing Control+R, to reply to a message, same thing.
When pressing the escape key in F S Reader 2.0, to go from my alphabetical

When pressing ALT+f4 to close a program, or pressing Control+W, to close a

Tom,

Download the standalone version of GWX control panel and run it. It does not
install anything on your computer. It just sets the options to prevent the
downloading and installation of W10. This is not rocket science. It just
works. I have run it on a dozen computers with no adverse effects. And in
the future, if you decide you want to install W10, just run the program
again and it will reverse the changes it has previously made, allowing you
to download and install W10.

I agree that I never want to install unnecessary software on my computers.
In this particular case, this program just works and it is fully accessible
with Jaws, which is an added wonderful bonus. So, go ahead and do it and
kick that annoying W10 nag out of your life.

I am just reluctant to put software on a computer for something like this

I guess my bigger point is that we should not constantly be badgered about

Not good news...
I logged in to my Citrix WebEx webinar a few minutes ago and JAWS did great
getting in.
However, once I arrived at the initial Presenter screen I was unable to get

So, after several minutes of trying every thing I knew I could see the Chat

I believe that once the Chat button is activated that the Chat box and maybe
even the polling may be accessed with key strokes.
I have numerous webinars in February-March and will continue experimenting
using only JAWS.

It occurs to me to share this little bit of trivia so to speak. If you
wish
to go to any drive on your system directly simply open up the run dialog
and

type the drive letter followed by a colon.

Another method to get to the system drive normally C: would be in the same
dialog box type a single backslash character and of course hit enter.

I typed it out in case not everybody has their punctuation turned on.

These things cross my mind every once in a while.

Hi,
Download the GWX Control Panel from the following website:
http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

You can download either the full installer package or the standalone program
(that is the one that I used).

After downloading, run the program. It will require administrator
privileges. You can tab through the main interface with your screen reader.
You will have to use the Jaws cursor if you want to read everything on the
screen. It is pretty self explanatory. After disabling the annoying GWX, you
can also enable a real-time monitoring app that will notify you if MS tries
to slip Windows 10 onto your system in the future.

This is a real nice little utility that is helping a lot of folks with this

I'm not sure if it's after the windows 10 update, or after I made changes
in

the quick setting which I don't remember what the changes were; however,
here is the skinny.

Let's say there are two links I am passing by, about and contact us. I
click contact us and the about page opens.

The only way I can get the right link to launch is listing the links, tab
to
move to link, then activate link. That is to much just to read a page
lol,

thoughts?

Windows 10, jaws 16 and IE 11.

Hi all.
I have been experimenting with Google Chrome Browser, and I have found
that it is very accessible and easy to use. More than that, I can open the
same web site in half the time as with IE or Firefox. It never crashes,
and it is more stable than any other browser. It is the best browser when
it comes to streaming videos and other media by far. The video never
pauses for example. In IE, the same video pauses a few times for a few
seconds. Also, Google Chrome is the easiest browser to use. Yes, I am not
kidding. Simply press enter on the browser, and the home page opens. I
have mine set to Google of course. Now, just press alt and the screen
reader will say chrome button. If you press down arrow, every setting and
menu you will ever need is in that one vertical column. The history,
delete history, book marks, are all in that one vertical menu just by
pressing the alt key on the home page. All navigation JAWS short cut keys
work in Google Chrome. I have not found anything yet that is not
accessible. Also, every JAWS key command works in Chrome just like in IE.
You can just press alt + D for the address bar for example. I will
continue to play around with Google Chrome a little more, and I will be
ready to do an Audio tutorial for you guys. You will not believe just how
much better Google Chrome is over any other browser. You will hear it with
your own ears when I send you the tutorial probably by Friday. I know some
of you will use Chrome as your default browser. God bless and have a great
night. Talk to all of you soon.

2015-10-18 Thread John M.

Neil,
I have been using IE 11 on Windows 7 Home 64-bit with Jaws 13 and 14 for
about three years and have had no problems. Of course, I come across web
sites that do not always work as I would like. When I encounter them, the
first thing that I do is to try the offending site using Firefox and NVDA.
In some cases, I will be able to navigate around the problem. More often
than not, it is poor website design and I encounter the same roadblock with
FF and NVDA.

Overall, IE 11 has been more stable and performs faster than all of its
predecessors.

Microsoft recently announced that it will end support for older versions
of

Internet Explorer on Jan. 12, 2016, less than three months from now, so if
you are running Windows 7 or later as most of us are, you will have to
upgrade to IE 11 in order to continue receiving security updates and
patches. Beginning on that date, IE 10 and earlier will no longer be
supported for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. So now may be a good time to
upgrade to IE 11 if you have not already done so, or consider switching to
Firefox full time if you are having trouble with IE 11. Click below for

Hello,

Per the response to my inquiry, I'm not sure whatyou mean by a 'flatscreen

standard laptop keyboard, (smaller keys and no elevation between the
rows.)

Microsoft offers the 5000 Series Bluetooth keyboard. However, according to
a

friend of mine who is fairly tech savvy, it's not as ergonomic as the 4000
series (which is USB only.)

I don't know if ergonomics makes a real diference, in many respects it
would

just be great to find a keyboard where the keys are a bit larger than a
laptop keyboard and there is some elevation diferential between the
keyboard

rows. Bluetooth offers some convenience.

Any recommendations.

Hi Jim,
I am having the same experience as you on the Vanguard site. Their site used
to be very accessible, but since their last major site upgrade,
accessibility has gone down the tubes. I have contacted their web support
team, who tried to convince me that the accessibility, or lack thereof, is
my problem and not theirs. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't me. I
don't think that I should have to contact a customer advisor every time I
want to perform a transaction. I don't have to do that with my bank and I
did not have to do that with Scottrade, when I was managing my daughters
brokerage account.

AS the largest mutual fund company in the world, I think that they have an
obligation to provide an accessible portal for their customers who rely on
assistive technology. I will let you know if I get anywhere with them.

Hi Everyone,

I don't know if all of you have heard of the JAWS speech history. I just
heard of it the other day. With the JAWS speech history you can copy and
paste what JAWS speaks. For example it you have a message or an error
message come up you can go to the JAWS speech history and copy it and
paste
it into an email. Here is how you do it. If you want to copy something
which

was recently spoken like an error message or something like that, just use
the layered keystroke Jaws Key+Spacebar followed by H for history.

This will bring up the Speech History and all Jaws has recently spoken
is

displayed in a virtual viewer

You can use Control+End to go to the bottom of the virtual viewer as
whatever was said last will be listed at the bottom.

If you end up with a lot of stuff in the speech history you can use the
layered keystroke Jaws Key+Spacebar followed by Shift+H to clear the
virtual

viewer containing this speech history.

Re: [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS 10, OBSERVATIONS AND ANALYSIS

2015-07-13 Thread John M.

John,
I completely agree with you. I have always recommended to my clients (both
sighted and blind) that they wait at least until service pack one is
released for any new operating system or major software package. It blows me
away how many people want to jump right in to a new operating system (be it
Microsoft or Apple) on the first day that it is released. And then for
months, they bombard the lists with complaints about things not working as
they expected. As I have said for more years than I care to mention, if it
is doing the job that needs to be done, leave it alone.
That is why I am still using Jaws 14 on my main desktop, even though I have
the SMA to upgrade it. I did not like some of the issues I found with Jaws
15 and 16, and 14 is working just fine for me.
Also, there are plenty of high-end Windows 7 laptops and desktops available
from sources such as NewEgg and eBay, that can be purchased for a fraction
of their original price. I recently purchased two beautiful Lenovo
Thinkpads, for about 15% of what they sold for new just three years ago.

The opinions expressed in this document are my own and do not necessarily
reflect those of Freedom Scientific or the list management.

After reading The FS-Cast podcast and studying other informatory
resources,

I have reached the conclusion that Windows 10, at least in its original
form, is not a good choice for those who use screen readers. Please note.
Windows 10 is still a work in progress. Freedom Scientific will certainly
keep tabs on things as they develop and make the necessary changes.

THE EDGE WEB BROWSER:

Microsoft has already made massive changes in this new web browser and
they

admit that it is not as good as was hoped. The software was designed like
Firefox and Google Chrome but it doesn't function nearly as well as either
of those programs. Unfortunately, it does not work well at all with
screen
readers. The Windows 10, scheduled for a release on July 29, is
definitely

not a comfortable fit for Jaws.

THE NEW WINDOWS 10 CONFIGURATION:

Microsoft has heard us and is trying to bring back the older
configurations

like Windows XP and Windows 7. According to an article published by
Microsoft, their attempt to design a Start menu which worked well with
smart

phones and IPads, resulted in numerous complaints from PC users. The
version of Windows 10 scheduled for release can give you a taste of what
is

coming but that too is currently in a fluid state. I asked a Microsoft
representative why they are sending out a product which is still imperfect
or incomplete. His response was, Look, we're going to hit most of our
customers at home with this new software. Some will buy it because it is
new. Our free upgrade will add many more customers to our list. What
we're

trying to do is get away from 8.1. We have had so many problems with that
version of Windows. We almost had to do this to keep from losing too many
retail customers to the Apple software. People like you and other
customers who use screen readers or magnification are a tiny minority when
compared to the rest of our customer base. That doesn't mean we won't
work

to fix these issues but we won't be able to do it right away.

I asked him how we should proceed in the meantime. His suggestion was to
maintain our current versions of Windows or, ideally, load Windows 10 but
change the Default browser to Internet Explorer, still available in this
new

release.

Windows 10 is currently being tested by Freedom Scientific and this latest
Jaws update has indeed addressed some of the problems. However, many
issues

still exist. To quote Jonathan Mosen, If you enjoy experimenting with
software and trying to find ways to make it work, Windows 10 is going to
work for you. For those of us who use our computers to do work or reach
out to other people throughout the world, the last thing we need is a
system

which might or might not work in any given situation.

David,
I would also recommend that you go into the Windows update settings and
uncheck the box that says give me recommended updates the same way that I
receive important updates. This will prevent KB3035583 from automatically
being installed. I am not pleased that Microsoft decided to push out this
marketing patch, with out the computer user being required to accept the
patch. I have had numerous calls from clients over the past week, in a panic
about the icon that has appeared in the system tray. All of them have
avoided Windows 8/8.1 and they were in a panic that they were being updated
to Windows 10. Everything has consequences and Microsoft did not think this
marketing move through. This little move is already tainting what might end
up being a really good OS.

Hi Mario,

I am still using Vipre 2015, and since the last update of JAWS 16, I now
can

access the schedules to set Vipre up to scan at specific times, choose the
type of scan that I want, and Vipre announces to me when it starts a scan.
There is an icon in the notification area that always tells you of Vipres
condition, whether it is updated or not, which it ddoes automatically, and
it shows the last date and time that the definition update took place. I
can
also access the quarantine, view the threats that were detected, and
delete
them if so desired. This is as much as I have been to do with any
Antivirus

program since using JAWS,and all that I have ever been able to do with
Vipre. All other settings, i.e. the firewall etc. are accessible too. I do
not know if Freedom Scientific is working directly with Threat Track
Security, but things got much better with this last JAWS update. Just my
observations, not meant to upset anyone.

sI'm still using the 2014 version because of it's interface is somewhat
screen reader friendly, more than what I experienced in the past.

I think there's a distinction to make between a program being accessible
versus being screen reader friendly, in that a program that is screen
reader
friendly allows a blind user to utilize that program more effectively
rather

than that program just being accessible, which does not promote useability
by the blind user. especially with a security suite, one has to respond in
a

timely manner, and for blind users, we need to be able to do the same. the
more screen reader friendly a program is, the more frequently a blind user
will use said program.

I welcome any thoughts, but not to much as to upset the moderators.

I

Malware Bytes find things that Vipre did not, and they both are good
products. As far as being compatible, they do work well together, but you
must install Vipre first, as it will remove any other antivirus/malware

If I were in your shoes, I would talk with your supervisor and insist on

Wrong!
7,800Kbps is approximately equivalent to 7.8 megabits per second (Mbps).
So, if you are paying for an Internet connection advertised as 10Mbps

Re: [JAWS-Users] an inaccessible web site.

2014-02-25 Thread John M.

Hi Jim,
Here is my experience with the referenced site:
Win 7 64-bit and Jaws 13
Using IE 10, nothing is visible to Jaws under step 2 - select your provider
and the checkboxes to subscribe to the mail lists are not visible.

Firefox 24.3.0: Radio buttons to select a provider are accessible, but the
descriptions of the providers are not visible. The checkboxes to subscribe
to

the mail lists are accessible.

NVDA 2013.3:
Using IE 10, nothing is visible to NVDA under step 2 - select your provider,
although there are multiple unreadable lines in this section. The checkboxes
to subscribe to the mail lists are not visible.

Firefox 24.3.0: nothing is visible to NVDA under step 2 - select your
provider. The checkboxes to subscribe to the mail lists are not visible.

And on my iPad 4 running iOS 6.1.3:
Using Safari: nothing is visible to Voiceover under step 2 - select your
provider. The checkboxes to subscribe to the mail lists are not visible.

So, the problem is not limited to Jaws, but is more a function of how the
site is coded. This site would be a good case study for the developers of
screen readers to dissect and determine why this site does not work properly
with a screen reader and then try to accommodate such issues on other sites.

I realize that there are an infinite number of ways to code a web page, so
it will be impossible to accommodate all coding techniques. But it is very
interesting to see how the different browsers and screen readers interact
with various web pages.

Re: [JAWS-Users] working on the web site

2013-12-10 Thread John M.

David,
Remember that many programs that were released when XP was king, still work
great under Win 7. A few examples of ones which I use include MP3 Direct Cut
and Juice.

Also, XP systems which are not attached to the Internet will serve their
owners for a long time to come.
Finally, virtual machines and XP mode on Win 7 Pro provide a great way to
run those programs which will not work in native Win 7. And although I am
sure that they exist, I have not run across a single old program which I
have not been able to get working under Win 7.

So, don't get too frisky with the delete key!

Best,
John

Here lately I have been removing items that are no longer or are soon to

of
the XP material that will soon be a non-issue. Sadly that is a large part
of

available for new stuff. With luck as time moves along I will be able to
populate it with more Windows 7 material and if anybody has any
contributions they feel would benefit others please let me know.

I don't have any plans to obtain a Windows 8 system at this point so if
any

Re: [JAWS-Users] computer time

2013-10-29 Thread John M.
Here is a simple utility that runs in the system tray and will keep the
computer clock up to date on an interval that you can set. I initially
downloaded this utility for my wife's old IBM ThinkPad with a dead Cmos
battery. The clock is off by days every time she turns it on. Instead of
disassembling the computer to replace the battery, this utility resets the
clock each time she starts the computer. Easy!

Once you have the utility installed and confirm that it is working, you can
disable the Windows Time service. It's not mandatory, but it will save a few
MB of ram.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Updating malwarebytes pro

2013-09-23 Thread John M.
It is not necessary to use the Jaws cursor to navigate the Malwarebytes
menus. Follow these three simple steps:

1. With Malwarebytes open, tab until you land on the Exit button.
2. Press the up arrow key once, which will place you on the menu which
contains Scanner, Protection, Update, etc.
3. Hold down the Ctrl key and use the left and right arrows to navigate to
the desired tab. Once on the desired tab, press the tab key to navigate
through the options available within that particular tab.
If you lose your place, just keep tabbing until you reach the Exit button
and arrow up once.

I have installed Malwarebytes Free and Pro many times and by default, it has
always been configured to automatically update in the background.

Hi Greg,

Below are steps on putting Malware Bytes updateing on a schedule:

This is going to be tricky. So, I would suggest that you read through
these

steps a couple of times to get a good idea of what you will need to do to
access the tabs to change settings. I am writing these steps running
Malware Bytes Pro on a desktop computer

running Jaws 13 XP Pro. The routing of the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor
is
necessary to do this. Also, I'm assuming that Malware Bytes is running at
startup is in the system tray.
1. Go to the system tray, press enter on Malware Bytes to open, arrow down
to start scanner press enter.
2. Route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor with insert + the numpad minus /
Jaws cursor key. Press the pageup key to take the cursor to the top of
the

page arrow down 1 time.
3. If you use your say line keystroke, insert + up arrow, you will hear
Jaws

read the following tabs. Scanner, Protection, Update, Quarantine, Logs
Ignore List Settings, More Tools About. If you use your insert + right

left arrow keys to navigate by word you can navigate to the individual
tabs.

You want to navigate using insert + right arrow until you hear Protection
Tab.
Now, this is a little tricky! After you hear Protection Tab, use only the
arrow keys for this little move! After hearing Protection Tab, left arrow
1

time you'll probably hear Jaws say blank, now right arrow a couple of
times until you hear Jaws say the first letter of, Protection, which is a
capital letter P. Remember you need to have the Jaws cursor routed to the
PC cursor for all this.
4. While on the letter P, press the left mouse button 1 time, wait a
second

or 2, press your PC cursor key to

navigate this tab.
5. Tab through here checking / unchecking what you want the program to
do.

When you get to the, Scheduler

button, press the spacebar to open.
6. When the scheduler opens you tab to add press the spacebar. You will
have 2 jobs to create a schedule for,

scan update. I'll use update for this example. With th Update radio
button checked tab 1 time to the,

Frequency combobox where you will have 4 choices hourly, daily, weekly,
monthly. Arrow to the the 1 you

want . This chooses how often you want Malware Bytes to check for
updates,

I have my program set on daily.
7. Tab 1 time to, Recover if missed by combobox, you arrow down to how
many days but, I personally can't

explain what this is for.
8. Tab 1 moere time to the next combobox this is where you will set your
beginning date, time AM / PM. In

this combobox you will need to hold down the control key use your arrow
keys. So, with the left control key

held down press the right arrow key 1 time arrow up or down to choose
the

month. Remember, do not let up

on the control key during this process. After choosing the month, control
+

right arrow 1 more time to choose

the date of the month, using control + up or down keys here. After
choosing

the date, control + right arrow to

the year, control + up / down arrow to choose the year, control + right
arrow to the hour, control + up/ down

arrow to choose, control + right arrow to minuts, control + up / down
arrow

to choose, finally control + right

arrow to A M / PM, control + up /down arrow to choose. Now, you can let
up

up on the control key use your say

line keystroke, insert + up arrow, to read the month, date, year, hour,
minutes, A M or PM. If you need to make

any changes remember to do it using the control arrow keys in these
comboboxes.
9. Tab 1 time to, repeating every combobox, this should be set on, 1.
10. Tab through the rest of the checkboxes checking or unchecking the
options.
11. Tab to save press the spacebar, tab to exit, press the spacebar.
Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Ongoing problem with Outlook 2007 using Jaws 14 or 15beta

2013-09-17 Thread John M.

Greg,
This sounds very similar to a problem I was having on a XP system. I don't
remember specifically what the culprit was, but I believe that it was
another program--possibly the software for my Samsung printer/scanner/fax.
Every couple of minutes, it was doing something which caused Jaws to mess
up.

So, if this is a new behavior, try to determine what has changed on your
system just prior to the problem appearing. It may be something as innocent
as updated drivers, an application software update or even a Windows patch
Tuesday. Was it happening prior to the install of the Jaws 15 beta? Which
leads me to a real pet peeve of mine--folks testing out software, especially
beta software, on the machine which they rely on daily.

I'm sure that others on the list will chime in with other possible
solutions.

I am trying to identify why Outlook 2007 on my Windows 7 64 bit Toshiba
notebook computer does not work properly with either Jaws 14 or Jaws 15
beta. I have spoken to both Fs tech support and Microsoft accessibility
support without any success. The problem is that when I open Outlook 2007
in Jaws 14 or 15 beta Jaws will read emails properly for a while, 3 to 5
minutes or so. However at some point Jaws stops reading emails that are
in
html format. Jaws presents them in a strange format with many garbled
text
and the html commands such as t to move to tables and h to move to
headings

do not work. Instead the letter t or h will appear in the body of the
email. And the cursor key (+ on the numpad) says pc cursor rather than
virtual pc cursor which it says when Jaws is working properly when reading
open html emails. If I close Outlook and reopen it Jaws will work
properly

again for a few minutes and then revert to not displaying html emails
correctly.

Fs tech support has been unable to duplicate this problem on their
computers
and have received no reports from other Jaws users with my problem. FS
had

me completely uninstall Jaws 14 and do a clean reinstall but that did not
eliminate the problem. they also checked all my Jaws 14 settings and they
seem to be working properly.

Microsoft support says it must be a Fs issue since my Outlook 2007
installation looks fine to them. They checked all my settings for Outlook
2007 and nothing they did eliminated the problem. I also ran the Office
diagnostic from the Outlook 2007 help menu and it found no problems with
my

Outlook 2007 program.

So I am wondering what could be happening on my system to cause this to
happen. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg Washington

Using Karen's Replicator, you can setup a series of jobs to copy all of
your data files to a backup location, such as a flash drive or external HD.
Whenever you want to backup your data, you attach the backup device to your

the backup process lightning fast.

By comparison, if you are manually copying files, you may forget to copy the

simple method for maintaining a backup of data files. It is not the tool to
use for making a backup of your entire computer. That job is best left to a
program such as Image for Windows or other imaging software.

The

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS accessible system back up methods

While backing up to a second internal HD is better than nothing, it is not
optimal. Depending on how important your data files are to you and your
family, using the internal drive does not protect you from fire, theft, or a
software glitch rogue virus or user error which deletes or damages the
backup data on the second HD. External

hard drives are dirt cheap...you can pickup a 1TB unit on sale on Amazon for
under $60 with free shipping. I have seen 500gb units on Amazon for under

You should have looked at David's tutorial on Image for Windows. You can
back things up to an external disk; you may need help when you have to
re-install the image but it means you wouldn't need a pile of DVD's.

As far as Rollback Rx, it appears to me to be a very nice system recovery
product. But, I'm not sure it backs up all your data, it could, but I
didn't think it does.

Guess I have just learned that sad fact the hard way- have never
experienced
a hard drive problem during nearly 30 years of working with computers.
The

hard drive was sent back for replacement- and the vendor wanted $600 to
$800
to retrieve data.

I have a second internal HD which was a couple of years old, but had not
gotten around to figuring out whether Rollback RX could back up to 2
different drives or not. The new computer's OS was also new to me, so was
still trying to get everything installed and figure out what back-up
option
to use. I had used Image for Windows but thought that the shuffling of
several disks was rather unwieldy; so was now trying out and getting used
to
Rollback RX and not getting very helpful responses back from their tech
support.

If your data is important to you, you must maintain at least three copies
of
your data on at least two different types of storage media and in at
least

two separate locations.

For example,
Let's assume that your data files located on your computers internal hard
drive are one copy stored in one location.
Next, you purchase an external hard drive, backup your data (or your
entire
computer) to the external drive and store the drive at a friend or family
members home. Now you have two copies stored in two separate locations.
Next, you setup a cloud storage account and store a copy of your data at
the
cloud service. You will now have three copies of your data, stored in
three
separate locations and on two separate types of storage media.

If your data is important, this scenario is the minimum starting point.
For
my data, I use the above scenario, plus I alternate my data backups
between
two external hard drives. I also copy the latest backup to two separate
flash drives and one of those flash drives is always with me.

You never trust your data to a single hard drive, no matter how new or
old

it is. I have seen hard drives fail in one week and I have seen hard
drives
run continuously for more than 10 years.

If the data on your failed drive is very important to you, email me off
list
and I will put you in touch with a data recovery service with very
reasonable prices.

Dear List,

Just lost all recent data due to the failure of a 4 month old hard drive.
Had Rollback RX installed (and thought my data was protected) but the
technician said he could not locate the files- and the hard drive was
turning extremely slowly.

Needing advice on whether to get an external hard drive or to check out
cloud backup options. Some hard drives seem to have backup software built
into them, but I'm skeptical about the accessibility of such programs. I'm
also looking at what Seagate calls expansion hard drives- which may not
have the backup software built into them- am still trying to figure that
one

out. Would appreciate your experience and advice.

Hi John,
I never had to code in AutoCoder, but my father did, back in the early 60s.

Much of my Assembler programming was at the OS level, writing custom mods
for the IBM Virtual Machine OS. VM was by far my favorite OS and I was
always amazed at what that OS could do--with a little bit of tweaking. Those
were really fun days, and so much simpler than today's world of PCs and the
Internet.

Hi Scott,
It just so happens that for the past several weeks, I have been working
with

Liberty Basic. It is a full featured Basic compiler and it has been fully
Jaws accessible so far. I am Using Win 7 64-bit with Jaws 13. According to
the website, it will also work with Win 8. I am using the demo version,
which means that I cannot produce a standalone .exe program and there are
also nag screens when you exit the program. The program has extensive help
and example programs. I have done extensive programming over the years in
370/Assembler, Cobol, Fortran, RPG, PL/1 and QuickBasic. Out of all of
those
languages, my all-time favorites are Assembler, RPG and QuickBasic
(Fortran

has many similarities to Basic).

I am writing a little daily reminder program for myself, because I have
never been completely satisfied with the many reminder programs which I
have
tested over the years. The program is almost complete and I have really
been
enjoying the process of learning Liberty Basic. I told my wife that
writing
code again is very relaxing for me. Of course, if I was forced to do it
for

40 hours a week, that would probably be a different story.

The link to Liberty Basic is:
http://www.libertybasic.com

The company also publishes a completely free Basic compiler called Just
Basic. I know that it has limitations over the full version of the product
and I have not tested it with Jaws, though I would assume that the
accessibility should be similar.

The link to Just Basic is:

If you decide to get into Liberty Basic, contact me off-list and we can

Oh yes, the cost of Liberty Basic is $60. If you send them an email and

receive

a $10 discount.

Good luck,
John

Re: [JAWS-Users] accessing a Linksys router WRT120N

2013-05-26 Thread John M.
David, I do not believe that the DDWRT firmware is available for your
particular router, but if anyone has a router which can support DDWRT, I
highly recommend it. It is fully accessible, extremely stable and high
performance.

I installed it on my old WRT54G and it made a big improvement in wireless
performance, particularly with our Apple TV. No more pausing while watching
movies and Youtube videos. It also tracks our monthly bandwidth usage,
especially nice now that Cox is keeping tabs on usage.

The firmware upgrade is not for the faint of heart, but if you take your
time and follow all of the instructions, the upgrade went flawlessly. I have
been running it for about 18 months and I am very happy with it.

Talk about an unpleasant manner to spend a Saturday night, read on for the
details.

My router works perfectly so far as my home network and accessing the
internet, but since it has been a while I figured on taking a look at its
firmware version and then go online to find out if I had the most recent
update. It turns out after a few hours and some very bad language my wife
and I learned that we have the most recent version of its firmware but we
can't access the administration control panel from any system using IE 10.
Fortunately her system is still using XP pro and we were able to figure
out

that the router is fine, just not accessible with IE 10.

This to me is stressful news and I thought somebody out there might
benefit
from the fact we pretty much missed out on any of our entertainment
programs

last night once we got in to this router problem.

I pity the poor person who has gone out and bought a new router thinking
there was something wrong with the unit currently on their desk. The
kicker

is for my needs IE 10 is no different than IE 9 but my router disagrees.

The thing that really gets me about computers so often is that you can do
it
right and it still won't work. Guess it's too late to pick another field
of

interest but some days I do consider that very thing.

Re: [JAWS-Users] FYI on mal ware bytes

2013-03-20 Thread John M.
For almost four years now, I have been using the paid version of
Malwarebytes on dozens of computers and have not had any problems reported
regarding the use of legitimate websites. When Malwarebytes blocks a site,
it is because it has either actively found or previously found the site to
contain malicious code or other vulnerabilities which could potentially
cause harm to your system. I do receive those warnings on occasion, usually
while I am doing some sort of Internet research. I always heed the warning
and steer clear of the site. I have trained my clients to do the same. By
following this advice, the rate of computer problems on the computers which
I maintain is nearly zero. So, you can disregard the Malwarebytes warnings,
but you are putting your system at risk. BTW, the only way that you can make
the statement that there are no problems with a website is if you have
administrative and physical access to the web server and are able to conduct
a complete inspection of the operating system, server software and all
content. And even then, it would be difficult to confirm such a statement.

I went to a few web page and found they won't come up. Now these pages have
no threats of any kind. Once I shut down mal ware bytes those sites came
back. So if anyone is having problems with web pages after using the paid
version or trial. Try shutting it down and try them again. Seems a lot of
paid virus and spyware programs can't tell the difference. They just want
your money.

Very good. If everyone who ran into an accessibility roadblock took the time

The other day I ran into a problem with a capcia on my senator’s web page.
I then called for the information that I needed and mentioned the contact
form. They just called me to test the page. They found a work around to
prevent bots from accessing.Since I was able to use it with no problem the
code will be shared with all of the Pa. senators sites..

Re: [JAWS-Users] Buttons on a Website

2012-10-15 Thread John M.
If you have NVDA installed, give the page a try using that screen reader.
Even using Jaws 13, there are sites where NVDA will read elements that Jaws
fails to find. My guess is that the buttons that Jaws is having problems
were created using JavaScript. The Hadley folks should know better than
that, because screen readers and JavaScript do not play well together.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Buttons on a Website

2012-10-15 Thread John M.

No problem Jerry.
NVDA is a free screen reader for Windows. Many of the keystrokes which you
already use in Jaws work the same in NVDA. It is not as robust as Jaws, but
every screen reader user should have at least two screen readers available
to them, for those time when you encounter a problem such as you are having
on the Hadley site.
You can download and install NVDA from:
http://www.nvda-project.org/wiki/Download
On the download page, you will find a link labeled NVDA 2012.2.1 Main
Package.
The NVDA key is the same as the Jaws key (Insert on the numpad). To
terminate NVDA use Insert Q. To open the NVDA configuration menu, use Insert
N.
I switch between NVDA and Jaws all the time. I also install NVDA on all of
my sighted clients computers, so I can easily work on them. The NVDA program
is supported by donations, so if you end up liking it, send them a few
dollars.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Buttons on a Website

2012-10-15 Thread John M.

Jerry,
You can also install the demo version of Jaws 13 and try the site using it.
You may be running into an issue that is corrected in a later version of
Jaws. If I remember correctly, IE 9 came out after Jaws 11 was superseded by
Jaws 12. Also, you can try the site using Firefox, but don't expect any
miracles there. Jaws and Firefox have a real love/hate relationship.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws not speaking UAC dialogues

2012-07-29 Thread John M.
Jaws 13 has stopped speaking the UAC dialogue boxes when they appear. Running
Win 7 64-bit and Jaws 13, prior to the latest update. NVDA has no problem
reading them. Jaws is silent until the prompt is responded too. If I tab three
times and press enter, Jaws will resume speaking. Any ideas? No changes,
patches on the system prior to this behavior starting.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] How to turn off ding sound in Jaws 13

 Hi,
I am using Jaws 13 on Windows 7 64-bit. There is one annoyance which I
recall used to happen with Jaws 7. When navigating a file list and I
reach

the top or bottom item, a ding sound is played by Jaws. The same sound
occurs when editing a Word document and you reach the beginning or end of
 the document.
This may seem petty, but that sound really annoys me. I have search
through
the Jaws settings and cannot find how to turn this off. This behavior
does
not occur in Jaws 11 running on XP, nor did it occur with Jaws 6, 9 or
10.

 Any help will be appreciated.
 John

Re: [JAWS-Users] Google maps

2012-05-17 Thread John M.

Hi Russ,
You are correct, it appears that Google has discontinued the mobile version
of the maps, replacing it with an app that can be downloaded to a phone.
Not much help if you are using a PC. As the other person suggested, you
will have to go to the maps.Google.com and click on get directions. It is
not as clean and simple as the mobile version once was, but it is usable.

It appears that more and more of the simple services which blind users have
relied on are going by the wayside. That's progress.

I'm using Jaws 10 and XP SP3 and Gmail works good in Basic HTML view. There

Hi Jerry,
I do not know if this will work in Office 2007, but in Office 2002: from the

number 254. This will give you a check mark. In Jaws, it will speak the

Hope that helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Is there a way to copy and paste from the

2011-10-25 Thread John M.

I'll give you the brute force method that I use:

From the command line window, press Alt-Spacebar to open the System Menu.

Arrow down to the Edit menu, press the right arrow.
Arrow down to select all and press Enter.
Press Alt-Spacebar and arrow down to the edit menu and press the right
arrow.

Arrow down to Copy and press Enter.
Open Notepad and press Ctrl-V to paste the contents into Notepad.
Copy what you want from within Notepad and paste it as needed.
It may be somewhat clumsy, but it works every time.

Have you looked into using Quickbooks online through a browser? I have
not used it, but their advertisements sound like you can use it in a
limited way for free. If memory serves, it allows several invoices per
month for free. It should certainly let you determine if it fits your
needs and is accessible.
