Hi Steven,
The best route to go is for each person to report problems individually,
this shows a higher number of incidences, for a particular problem, which
will get noticed quicker.

This is an intermittent problem that has been around for years, not truly
consistent but I remember it from Outlook 2010 and Jaws 14, 15, 16, 17, 18,
2018. Same with the read when open from that far back, if you write a long
message, you have to then close Outlook to get the read message to work
correctly again.

Hi friends,

Not sure if anyone else has noticed but when I open a message in Microsoft
Outlook 2016 to read it, I seem to have to press ctrl+home every time to
take the cursor to the top of the message so that I can start reading it
line by line.
Is there any way to stop this or a reason for it please?

Many thanks in anticipation,

Hi Kevin,
Actually, it is not known as the Jaws Help Archives,
It is simply

www.jaws-users.com

There is a section for help, that pertains to the e-mail list only, and the
archives pertain to the e-mail list as well.
As you navigate the site, you will see the individual pages for Tips and
Tricks, Programs etc.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Update Issue

2018-07-18 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Jerry,
I would abandon the update Jaws route in the future,
and just download the new release from their website and run it.
The update feature in Jaws doesn't always work correctly, and the download
process
appears to be rather slow compared to directly downloading the executable.
You shouldn't miss out on new releases, Mike posts them to the list when
they are available.
Just a thought!

Afternoon all.

Upon installing the latest update via the laptop update reminder, I had the
system restart. After restarting, I got (via sighted assistance) an error
message about a dll file being missing. So, again with sighted assistance, I
had to go to the fs sight, download my version of JAWS 2018, and run a
repair. Has anyone ever gotten this message, and is there a way to prevent
this from happening again. Using JAWS 2018 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop.
Thanks in advance.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Downloading Audio Files with Chrome

2018-07-02 Thread Rick Justice
Hi LeDon,
This can be accomplished in one of several ways,
depending on your keyboard.
The most common way when using a standard keyboard is using the
"Applications" key which is located
to the left of the right control key.
If this key is not available, then performing the shift + F10 keystroke will
open the menu.
And, when you have an item selected, performing a right mouse click will
also open the context menu.
Keep in mind that the content of the context menu will change according to
the item selected
and even depending on where it is located, IE, specific applications or the
internet.

When you find the link for the mp3 you want, do this:
1. Open the context menu, and press enter on, "save link as".
2. When the dialogue opens, tab to the file type combo box, and down arrow to

all files, then tab to the save button, and press the spacebar.
The file should download to your default location.
Note:
This seems to be a standard "Save As", dialogue box.

This is worth clearing up. The following three keystrokes are often
interchangeable, but not always: the applications key (located between the
right-hand Windows and control keys), shift-F10 and the right mouse click
key (numpad star key). Like several other keystrokes, they all open menus
specific to where you are in an application. For whatever reason, it's
called the "context men" when you press the applications key. I don't recall
coming across that term for shift-F10 or the right mouse click.

Again, all three keystrokes typically open the same menu choices, but not
always. If you think an option ought to be available with the applications
key but it doesn't show up, it's worth trying the other two.

Well, that's because it's called the Applications Key. Haha it, or shift-f10
if you want the extended versions, opens up the context menu, which is
called that because it's contextual/dependent on what sort of item you are
focused on.

Hi Holger,
Actually, I didn't find this method to be a big deal, it is just the
difference in browsers.
You don't typically get a run option unless you are downloading a .exe file.
Depending on how the author of the website has coded the pages
even in Internet Explorer sometimes you have to go to the context menu and
choose, "save target as"
in order to get what you want.
I can think of many other situations that require more work to accomplish a
simple task,
this one is just a walk in the park!

I had this issue previously and here it is again. Last time the

Issue: Suddenly JAWS is not reading line by line in word, notepad and
occasionally in thunderbird. I have maximized and tried a few other

I disagree slightly with this procedure.

First, it is better to reset IE using the control panel, and not from IE
itself.
Secondly, make sure you don't have other IE-dependent programs like certain
email programs open before you start the reset.

I would modify Step 1 to be:
Open Control panel.
In Windows 7 and Vista, just type control panel into the search box and
arrow down until you hear that announced and hit Enter to open it. Then
find Internet Options and hit Enter.

In Windows 10, the easiest way to find control panel is the use the
Windows-X key combination. Control panel and open Internet Options from
there.

Re: [JAWS-Users] A Question About Level And Position

2018-06-11 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Rebecca,
I have experienced this with the last 3 versions of Jaws on Windows 7
64-bit.
It appears to me that this is a problem with Jaws since it occurs on more
than 1 system, very annoying!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] A Question About Level And Position

I've asked about this before, but my frustration and confusion continue. In
the JAWS settings, there's a check box that says:

Show level and position.

It's checked, by default, it says.

However, the results are variable in the folder and file lists in Documents.
I have Windows 10, 1803, and the latest version of JAWS. Yesterday in
Documents, using insert-tab, JAWS said that a folder was 3 of 48, which is
precisely what it should say. The status line said there were 48 folders,
and my curser was on the third one down. Today, it's gone back to saying 3
of 29, and for the last folder, it says, 32 of 32.

My screen is maximized. I tried restoring it, and nothing changed. But the
inconsistency baffles me. Window-Eyes consistently reports the correct
position, and JAWS is set to do so. Is this a bug that could be fixed?

Hi David,

I'm playing a spoken notification sound that Rick made for another
operating system playing, but if Jaws reported the message I would still
hear Jaws reporting. Although Jaws doesn't report, the process is
completed, and you can tell because the Safely Remove icon disappears from
the system tray and the particular drive disappears from the list of drives.

Do you hear a double tone after hitting the safely remove hardware icon? If
so then I believe it is safe to go ahead and eject the drive.

Al, I'm confident there isn't such a keystroke, which would be very useful.
With Outlook, including 2010, you're not even told what number email you're
at as you go down the list, a feature Outlook Express had, or has. That's my
only regret about giving up OE.

However, your mention of a word search makes me wonder which type of search
you're doing. If you just type a word into the initial search field, you're
searching only subject lines. The way I search for all words, whether in the
subject line or the message field, is the following:

Control-shift-f to commence the search.
Tab once
Down arrow once
Shift-tab once.
Now type your search term, then press enter.

Hi everyone,

In my Outlook inbox I have about 650 e-mails that have already been read.
Sometimes I need to go back to a certain e-mail for references and it takes
too long to find it in my list. Is there a certain keystroke that I can use
to find out what number that e-mail is in my list? The reason why I am
asking is because sometimes I would like to go to that particular e-mail and
I do not want to go down that entire list to find out the one that I am
looking for. Sometimes when I do a search for a particular word in the
e-mail that I am looking for, it does not appear, but I do know that it is
on my list.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

Okay, a long way of doing it, but here are steps for creating desktop URL
shortcuts. Note: If the shortcuts are made with Firefox, the shortcut will
only work if Firefox is your default browser. I'll post steps for shortcuts
that can be assigned to open with a particular browser at a later time.
There may be an easier way, but here is what I do to create a desktop icon
for a web page.

1. Open your browser to the desired website.

2. Press, Alt + D, to move to and highlight the address bar , or pressing,
F6, works as well.

3. Press, Control + C, to copy the URL to the clipboard.

4. Move to the desktop and make sure that nothing is selected. Either press
F5 when on the desktop or hold down the control key and press the spacebar
to deselect anything that is already selected.

5. Press the, applications / context menu key, / right mouse click, to bring
up the context menu items.

6. Choose new from the menu and then choose create shortcut from the sub
menu.

7. A 2 stage dialogue opens. The default field is address. Paste the
address from the desired web page into the address field and tab once to the
next button and press space bar.

8. A second page opens and the default field says 'type a name for the
shortcut.' Type in a recognizable name for the shortcut and tab to next and
press space bar.

9. A finish button should appear. Press space bar or enter on it and you
are done.

This is a bit convoluted, but it seems to work quite well.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

As a reminder, the dialog to set a permanent placemarker is begun with

Re: [JAWS-Users] reading pdf's in Edge?

2018-04-19 Thread Rick Justice
When it comes to reading PDF files with Adobe reader,
the problems encountered are most likely to be with the documents
themselves, and not the reader.
Once the document is loaded in Adobe, if it does not read, whether Jaws
indicates it or not,
it is because it is nothing more than a picture of text.

It does not read the files I send it, just the title, still have to use Jaws
OCR to do it, since December last year. I can't remove it cause Jaws has to
see it, but I can't use it like I did before December of last year and it is

Hi net bat66 and Mike,

Does this procedure works when using Eloquence? In current JAWS versions
there
is no Volume slider when setting a voice profile with Eloquence, unlike with
other synths like SAPI 5 or any Vocalizer variant.
As I remember from older JAWS versions, this control when using Eloquence
was
simply a read-only edit box which said “Use your system's volume.”

Thanks in advance!

1. Open Keyboard Manager without any applications / programs open to make
sure
you land on, Default, when you open Keyboard Manager. Do this by pressing,
Jaws key + F2, press the letter, K, until you have Keyboard Manager
highlighted, & press enter. If you don't have, Default, highlighted when
opening the keyboard manager press the letter, D, until you do.

2. Find the following to assign keystrokes to them:
DecreaseVoiceVolume, None
Decrease system volume, None
IncreaseVoiceVolume, None
Increase system Volume, None
*Note: None, means that there is not a keystroke assigned to these
functions
/ tasks.

3. On each of these functions / tasks press, Control + h, to open an edit
field
to insert the keystroke you would like to use for this particular function /
task. *Note: Make sure not to press any other keys other than the
keystroke
you want!
4. After entering your desired keystroke tab one time, and there's a
checkbox
for assigning this keystroke to desktop keys only, usually people will
uncheck
this.

5. Tab to, Okay, Press ENTER, and choose OK in the confirmation dialog which
appears.

6. You'll be returned to the list view of scripts. Use the same steps with
the other functions / tasks listed above.

7. Close Keyboard Manager with, Alt + F4.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi Richard,

I got one better than your way to create a shortcut.

All you have to do both in Windows 7 or Windows 10 is bring up either the
run
command with Windows Key+R or simply the search box with the Windows key.

Now type sndvol and press enter and bingo, you are on the volume control.

I have read you can add a -f flag, e.g. sndvol -f to bring u p the master
volume directly but I found that even just sndvol will do this.

Here is the Jaws speech history as to what this sounds like, first without
and
then with the -f switch, I am using just the Windows key/Cortana search box
and
not the run command, note that the Jaws speech history gives you the result
after you type every letter of “sndvol”, if you type it fast you never hear
most of that, but I left it in just to show it:

Cortana

S, Search box edit

Sn, Snipping Tool, Desktop app

snd, See web results, Press right to open preview

sndv, See web results, Press right to open preview

sndvo, See web results, Press right to open preview

sndvol, Run command – this is where I pressed enter

Volume Mixer - Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) dialog

Speakers

Speakers

up down slider

83 – I am now pressing the down arrow several times and again the up arrow

82 percent

81 percent

80 percent

81 percent

82 percent

83 percent

Now here is what it sounds like with the -f switch added after SndVol, I
left
out all the suggestions which come up after each letter and go straight to
the
final one:

Cortana

sndvol -f, Run command

dialog

up down slider

83

82 percent

81 percent

Only difference seems to be that adding the -f switch doesn’t verbalize
Volume
Mixer - Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) dialog, Speakers, Speakers
and
instead it says right away the volume percentage.

You could of course create a shortcut with “sndvol” or “sndvol -f” but I
personally find pressing the Windows key and typing sndvol is

That worked, but I couldn't check ascending with the space bar. I had to ask
a sighted person to do it with the mouse. That sighted person is my
daughter, who is rather impatient, so I'm not goint to be able to get her to
do this with all the files in Documents.

Hi Miriam,

Try the following:
1. Press, Alt + V, to open the View menu.
2. Arrow down to the, Sort By, sub-menu, press enter to open. Also, make
sure the, List, checkbox is checked as you're arrowing down.
3. Arrow down, & you want both the, Name & Ascending, checkboxes checked.
It sounds like the, Descending, option might be checked, so pressing enter
on, Ascending, should fix the problem.

When you are in the folder
Press SHIFT + TAB to land on the NAME column header then press Enter to put

Also, once you press SHIFT + TAB you may right arrow to the "Date Modified"

I have revised the instructions to make them a bit more thorough and
complete. Note that these instructions will work with IE. They may or may
not work with other browsers that do not already support the extension
version of Rumola, but the specifics will vary.
1. Go to the main Rumola website here,
http://skipinput.com/
2. Highlight the link labeled
.. RUMOLA
with the Tab key (not the Arrow keys). It is important to use the Tab key
since the Arrow keys may or may not properly highlight the link.
3. Note that pressing Enter on the link before this next step may possibly
make it more effective, but it is not strictly necessary. In either case,
after you have highlighted the link with the Tab key and possibly pressed
Enter, press the Applications key and choose
"Add to favorites..."
from the context menu.
4. In the
"Create in"
combo box, select
"Favorites Bar"

Thank you if anyone can send me a link for it if it is up-to-date for IE.

Even if they were legible, they aren't accessible.

As far as I know, Windows media Player does not play DVDs out of the box. It

Personally, before I spent any money, I would download the free training
material for Jaws.
You can get the training material in Daisy format, and Dan Clark, in the
training department, does an excellent job of walking
you through the different aspects of Jaws.
You can access this info by going to the "Help" menu in Jaws

Hello I was wondering if there any books or tutorials of jaws that are
current so I can understand it better. I did come across this one book
from the access technology institute and the book does cover jaws and is
95 dollars and is on Jaws 2018, does anyone know if its well worth the
money cause was reading about it and they walk through every setting and
with the book you get all text and audio formats to help you out. I am
coming from Window Eyes and use NVDA that is also a good screen reader
so just wondering what other people think. Thank you.

Hello,

I am using Microsoft 2013 on one computer and 2016 on another. In prior

names and files I have done recently.

Does anyone know any JAWS 17 or 18 commands that will allow me to locate

Hi all. I have a couple of questions pertaining to navigating webpages with
Internet explorer, latest version, on a Windows 10 laptop with the latest
version of Jaws.

Is that a keyboard shortcut to navigate straight to areas that have
checkboxes? I found one on the Woolworths website in accessibility settings,
but I had to keep moving down headings to get to it because I couldn’t
remember if there was a shortcut. Also, if you are filling in a form that is
set out like a table, is there a quick way of getting to the submit button
halfway through the table, if the rest of the questions or fields are not
applicable to you? It is so tiresome having to tab seven or eight times
before you reach the button. I know pressing the letter B takes you to
whatever buttons are on the page, but if you are in the middle of text
fields, this can be tricky. Any feedback would be useful.

Hi group,

I am now using Jaws 18 in its latest configuration. I just priced out the
upgrade to Jaws 2018 and it will cost me $400 including the SMA. Before I
make that kind of investment, I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me
whether Jaws 2018 is worth the investment. I'm happy with jaws 18. I
would have no objection to upgrading if someone can give me good reasons for
that change. I have been studying the messages on our list and to tell you
the truth, what I'm hearing is somewhat discouraging. Many people are
having issues with 2018. However, I'd be willing to bet that the same thing
happened when Jaws 18 was introduced. There is always a time where people
have to adjust to new technology or software.

Hi Sandy,
I have been using Jaws for about 18 years, and I have my verbosity level set

This way I have the best control over exactly what Jaws speaks.
You can adjust Jaws to your liking with time as you become more familiar

says "copied selection to clipboard". In the other verbosity modes,
JAWS simply announces "copied".

Re: [JAWS-Users] Putting JAWS in Advanced User Mode

2018-03-06 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Sandy,
Jaws doesn't know what you want to hear or not hear, you have to tell it,
that is what the different verbosity levels are for.
As I mentioned in a previous message, I would explore the Jaws Help topics.,
which can be accessed from the help menu in the Jaws main window.
Jaws has so much configuration, it would be impossible to remember it all!
Even I consult the help topics from time to time.

Hi Sandy,
No, the Advanced Verbosity setting just announces less information
for advanced users that are comfortable with less information being spoken
while navigating.
If you explore these options in the settings center, you will see the

also using the Jaws help topics on your computer can be very helpful in

Actually, it is not called user mode, it is the verbosity levels for Jaws,
and Mike has already given a brief overview of how it works.
In addition, all 3 levels of verbosity are configurable.
Just trying to keep the terms correct, because if new users of Jaws go
looking for the wrong terms,
they will not find what they are looking for.

While it may well be possible that we could add such an option that would
allow the true password being typed, it is also very likely that just adding
this option into our software, would cause security minded organizations
such as IRS, SSA, and many other 3 letter organizations, to block those
versions from being deployed. It is part of the reason we have a Non-Tandem
build of our software posted also on the web.

Sorry, but this ability to echo Passwords is risky from security standpoint
and we will not be adding that one.

Eric

In my line of thinking, the key echo setting in Jaws is mis-named since it's
clear in the password fields that Jaws is actually echoing what is printed

Hi Andy,
Tell us which version of Windows, and which internet browser you are using,
and we can be of more help.
I believe Windows 7 has some parental controls built-in, and you can always
check the history of your internet browser.
Another option, and maybe the best, is to setup a restricted user account
on the computer for her to use.
Just a few thoughts!

Hey all

My girlfriend an di are both blind and her daughter likes to visit sites she
is not suppose to be on.

Is there a program out there that would be a tattle tell?

A program that would allow for us to go back and retrace her steps?

Something that she wouldn't be able to see because she does go in and turn
off things. She turns off the voice when she doesn't want her mom to know
what she is doing.

Looking for something that also blind friendly.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you

Yes, but we are talking about VLC player random function, not winamp.

I prefer randomising the playlist in winamp with alt-shift-r rather than
using shuffle mode. The reason is that when using shuffle it's impossible to
tell what song has just played after it's moved on to the next one.

I use Winamp for this too. There is a random button in the playlist editor.
I don't think there's a convenient shortcut for it by default. But yes, it's
there. When I took a brief look last time when I had version 2.2.6 or
something, I could not get jAWS to find it, however. I will try again with
3.01 and see what happens. The reason I didn't fuss about this at the time
(I like making random playlists too) is that I really only use VLC for
videos. Of course it's your choice, and it may make a difference to you that
VLC is still being updated. However, most new file formats are video, not
audio, formats. Another thing I value winamp over VLC for audio playback for
is the equalizer. VLC has one, but it's much less user friendly ... it's
very difficult to save your own settings. SO if you care about that, you
might want to consider this. However, for video playback, VLC simply can't
be beat. It's fast and extremely versatile. There's a lot of stuff under the
hood.

Hey folks.

Some may remember I made several posts about how great this player was, but
that certain things, like the advanced preferences dialog, were difficult to
use with a screen-reader. I just want to report that I have installed the
last stable build, 3.01 I believe, and not only does the player seem at
least twice as fast to load on my Windows 10 64 bit machine, but the
preferences screen is reading properly with JAWS. The advanced preferences
now show as a tree view, and so far I no longer have to hit space on a
checkbox to even hear whether it is a checkbox or not. So, good news for
video users.

For a JAWS frame I think the only way would be to write a script and use the
Run Script or Run ScriptEvent option. If you go into the frame options in
the frame manager and go where you can add actions to your frame there is no
built-in script for spelling the contents of the frame, at least not that I
can tell. However, there is an option to run an associated script.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Researcher

2018-02-14 Thread Rick Justice
Well, if the proper names are used, then everyone would understand what is
being discussed.
Apparently , you need someone to teach you how to ask for help,
since telling us that something isn't working, doesn't tell us what problem
you are having.
When someone asks for help, and are not clear in what they are writing, it
is difficult for others to offer the proper suggestions.
Perhaps if you re-state your problem, help will soon follow.

first of all, you will need to convert the .mp3 files to .mp4 files
for them to work with an Iphone. once that's done, all you need to do
is to connect your Iphone to your computer and start itunes and
select your iphone in itunes and copy and paste the ringtones from
your computer and paste them in to itunes. itunes will place them on
to your iphone as ringtones.

HI.
Sorry, I'm really not sure. What browser are you using? There definitely
used to be a "smart screen filtering" option in IE, which you could turn
off. That'd probably do the trick.
Note that this is actually supposed to protect you from fishing schemes and
other stuff. I don't know how efficacious it really is. I suspect, not that
much, really. But still, you might want to remember to turn it back on again
after you've installed Outlook Express.

Hi Vicki,
In Windows 7, Internet Explorer11, you would not look for Windows Defender,
, instead
open Internet Explorer, then open the tools menu, and then internet options.
Next, go to the advanced tab, and down arrow to security , then arrow to
disable smart screen filter, and check it with the spacebar
Tab to the okay button, and spacebar it to accept the changes and close the
internet options dialogue.
Finally, alt F4 to close Internet Explorer, then reopen it and try your
download.

Hey Mike,
On my laptop is an application key, but on my wireless keyboard there is not
an application key, but a print screen there.
If I do the change, will it miss up the application key on the laptop?
Patti

Hi

Instead of Modifying the default.jss and default.jsb files for a new script,
you could set up a keystroke to make the PrintScreen key be your
applications key. There is already a script in JAWS 17, 18, 2018 and
possibly earlier to invoke the applications key.

If you do not currently have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder,
create a new file with the full name of default.jkm in your JAWS user folder
and add the following lines:

[Common Keys]
PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey

If you already have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder just add the
line

PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey

In the [Common Keys]Section of the file.

It is dangerous to have a copy of the default.jsb file in your JAWS user
folder. Any JAWS update can install a new version of default.jsb that can
make your copy of that file useless. And has been pointed out, you can only
use that copy of default.jsb with the version and update that were used to
save it. But using a keystroke instead will be compatible with any version
of JAWS. Also the JKM file can be moved to any version of JAWS.

When is VFO going to make available the ability to read text on photos,

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws version confusion

2018-01-20 Thread Rick Justice
This is incorrect!
There is a big difference between and update, and an upgrade.
An update will have the same version number at the beginning, such as Jaws
18,
and upgrade will have a completely new number such as Jaws2018.
Updates to a particular version of Jaws are at no cost to the user,
since they tend to correct issues in that version.
however, upgrades do count against an SMA,
since they introduce a new version of the software typically with new
features.

No. JAWS 2018, as others have said, is a completely different version from
JAWS 18. You need to install JAWS 2018 from your DVD and then check for

you need to install it separately from JAWS 18. You can do this with the

Hi Dennis,
Here is one way to get there in Windows 10:
1. From the control Panel, select, File Explorer Options, and press enter.
2. When this dialogue opens, move to the View tab, then tab once to the
tree-view of options.
3. Press the H key until you hear, Hide extensions for known file types, and
use the spacebar to uncheck it.
4. Tab to the apply button, and press the spacebar to apply your changes,
then tab to the okay button, and do the same to close the dialogue.
You are done!

Enhancements in JAWS 2018.1712.10 (December 2017)
The following is a list of improvements made between the initial JAWS 2018
release and the December 2017 update.

Screen Shade for Additional Privacy

For additional privacy, use the JAWS Screen Shade to prevent others from
seeing what you are typing or reading by turning the screen black. This
feature
is available in Windows 10 and Windows 8.

To turn on the Screen Shade, press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by the
PRINTSCREEN key, or triple tap with three fingers on a touch screen.
Alternatively,
Screen Shade can be toggled on or off using Quick Settings (INSERT+V). Once
enabled, the contents of your screen can no longer be seen. The Screen Shade
remains active until toggled back off, or JAWS is restarted. Screen Shade
can also be turned off by doing a right mouse click.

Note: Screen Shade is strictly a privacy feature and will not increase the
battery life on a laptop or tablet. Additionally, Screen Shade is only
available
when JAWS is running by itself. It cannot be used when running Fusion, or
when running JAWS together with ZoomText or MAGic.

Speech On Demand

Speech On Demand is a feature that allows you to limit the amount of JAWS
speech you hear as you navigate windows and documents or perform other
actions
using hot keys. By default, when using Speech On Demand, JAWS only announces
actions that are associated with a limited set of hot keys. In addition,
mouse
echo and typing echo are still available, which allows JAWS to read text
that you point to with the mouse pointer and speak characters and words as
you
type. You can quickly toggle between Speech On Demand and full speech using
a convenient layered command, or even make Speech On Demand the default
speech
mode when JAWS starts.

For JAWS users who rely heavily on Braille or for users of Fusion that can
see well enough to use the screen for tracking focus, too much speech can be
overwhelming while navigating using the keyboard and mouse. However, users
still want to be able to use speech to read once they have moved to a
location
on the screen, or just checking a Window Title, column heading in a table or
spread sheet, or even reading the time from the System tray. In both these
situations, Speech On Demand can be very helpful. You will find that
switching applications with ALT+TAB or using ARROW keys to move through a
document
are silenced. Speech is only triggered when using a limited set of reading
commands such as speaking the current character, word, line, paragraph, or
doing
a Say All.

Layered commands to toggle the feature:

list of 2 items
. Press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by S to toggle the speech mode between Full
Speech and either Speech On Demand (the default) or Mute speech. Focus
braille
display users can also press RIGHT SHIFT+M (DOTS 1-3-4) to toggle between
Speech On Demand and Full Speech.
. Press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by SHIFT+S while Full Speech is disabled to
toggle between Speech On Demand and Mute speech.
list end

By default, JAWS always returns to Full Speech when restarted after these
keystrokes have been used. To make permanent changes to the default

do the following:

list of 10 items
1. Press INSERT+F2, and select Settings Center.

This is probably a stupid question

I have downloaded the update for Jaws 2018 that came out today. Because
of issues I was having, I've been using NVDA exclusively, but I want to
install this build and see if it helps. Can I do so with NVDA running?
Is JAWS smart enough to know I have a screen reader running and don't
want its self voicing install? Then once it is installed, I assume it
goes over the top of my existing 2018 and when I launch it, any settings
I saved will be present, and I can see how this new build goes??

Thanks.

And yes. Go Blue! Dodgers in 2018!

Isn't this feature kind of redundant when using a screen reader?

If the information is being spoken aloud, all it does is make the screen
blank. Granted, people would have a hard time getting the information if
speech is set to a fast speed, however, if someone really wants your
information, all they have to do is record it with a recorder, then slow it
down with audio software.

iBooks, for example, has this ability, so while I can appreciate VFO wanting
to give new features, this one seems kind of redundant to me.

Just offering a dissenting voice.

it's an added option that I would like to see. Not saying your point is
wrong but we are human we could think it's on and not have it on and have

Good point, but since it is invoked with a couple key strokes it shouldn't
be a large deal. I would imagine if say JAWS would happen to crash so that
the system would need to be rebooted then your screen would go back on. Now
that is probably worse case event.

If your lap top already has such a feature then it is kind of redundant. How
ever if it does not or you forget the key command then it comes in to play.
For example this particular lap top I own might have that feature but I have

I’m guessing this question might be seen as a bit too general to be of
interest to the list. So please feel free to reply privately if you want. I
don’t want to clog the list with stuff folks don’t care about. I am curious
about the J dictate and J say. I read the blurb on Brian‘s website. I
certainly don’t need to control my entire computer via voice. But there are
aspects of it that sound like they could be rather useful. I mean, if you
can really use natural language to do all sorts of stuff, finding things
changing settings etc., without having to memorize all the stuff that goes
with that in terms of keyboarding and what keystroke does work, it could be
kind of nice. Anyway, please do feel free to reply off list at the address I
will put right here. I guess I’m looking for Star Trek. Smile.

in the windows 10 mail app, which, I guess, means that deleted messages are
going to stay on the server forever, which is not at all what I want. If
there is a setting like what I have described in this app, where is it and
how do I get to it?

Also, I am seeing all of the emails I sent showing up in my messages list in
the inbox in the mail app. That never happened on my xp machine, and it does
not happen in any mail account I have on my phone, and it is not something I
want. I don’t mind a separate sent mail folder, but I sure don’t want to see
what I send in my inbox. How can I make this stop? Thanks in advance for any
help.

Mary

Hi Mary,
Have you tried selecting all text, and then copy and paste?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] question about MJaws convenient ocr

I just read the help segment pertaining to convenient ocr. I have just one
question. I wonder if it is possible to save text that has undergone the ocr
process if a pdf file was the source of the original images or if you have
scanned a number of pages using a scanner or the pearl camera. The help
section did say you lose the text that was acquired from an onscreen image
from things like controls or a set up screen for an app once you move to a
different screen. But I was hoping that in other cases, it might be possible
to save the ocred text for later reading or repeated reading rather than
having to ocr it all over again.

I understand that this feature isn’t an Open Book replacement. But it
somehow seems like it should be possible to just save out what you just
spent time ocring.

[JAWS-Users] TherapyNotes with Jaws

2017-11-17 Thread Rick Justice
Is there anyone that is using this scheduling website for their employment?
If so, are you able to access the schedule efficiently?
I would post the URL, but the sections of the site I am interested in are
only available
to businesses using the site.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Help needed with a Jaws 2018 OCR problem

Hi,

I have a strange problem with Jaws 18 (latest version) 64-bit
running on Windows 10 when I use the command: - insert / spacebar
/ W. Prior to the last Jaws update to Jaws 2018 when using the
OCR command I could read the contents of the open window I was
on. Since loading the latest Jaws
2018 version, when I use the same OCR commands I get everything
read back to me including anything else that is sitting in the
background and not an open current window. In short, all I get is
a whole lot of things being read out instead of the screen I am
focused on. Can anyone help to sort this out?

Bernard
