Hi Steven, The best route to go is for each person to report problems individually, this shows a higher number of incidences, for a particular problem, which will get noticed quicker. Hi Jerry, I would abandon the update Jaws route in the future, and just download the new release from their website and run it. Re: [JAWS-Users] Downloading Audio Files with Chrome
Hi LeDon, This can be accomplished in one of several ways, depending on your keyboard. The most common way when using a standard keyboard is using the "Applications" key which is located to the left of the right control key. If this key is not available, then performing the shift + F10 keystroke will open the menu. And, when you have an item selected, performing a right mouse click will also open the context menu. Keep in mind that the content of the context menu will change according to the item selected and even depending on where it is located, IE, specific applications or the internet. Hi Adrian, No matter what method you use for getting there, it is always a context menu, and the content of the menu will change according to the item selected at the time. The following three keystrokes are often interchangeable, but not always: the applications key (located between the right-hand Windows and control keys), shift-F10 and the right mouse click key (numpad star key). Like several other keystrokes, they all open menus specific to where you are in an application. For whatever reason, it's called the "context men" when you press the applications key. I don't recall coming across that term for shift-F10 or the right mouse click. Again, all three keystrokes typically open the same menu choices, but not always. If you think an option ought to be available with the applications key but it doesn't show up, it's worth trying the other two. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of JM Casey Sent: Sunday, July 01, 2018 4:36 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Downloading Audio Files with Chrome Well, that's because it's called the Applications Key. Hi Holger, Actually, I didn't find this method to be a big deal, it is just the difference in browsers. You don't typically get a run option unless you are downloading a .exe file. Depending on how the author of the website has coded the pages even in Internet Explorer sometimes you have to go to the context menu and choose, "save target as" in order to get what you want. I can think of many other situations that require more work to accomplish a simple task, this one is just a walk in the park! HTH, Rick Justice "Tomorrow's another day, another way!" First, it is better to reset IE using the control panel, and not from IE itself. Secondly, make sure you don't have other IE-dependent programs like certain email programs open before you start the reset. I would modify Step 1 to be: Open Control panel. In Windows 7 and Vista, just type control panel into the search box and arrow down until you hear that announced and hit Enter to open it. Then find Internet Options and hit Enter. In Windows 10, the easiest way to find control panel is the use the Windows-X key combination. Control panel and open Internet Options from there. I have Windows 10, 1803, and the latest version of JAWS. Yesterday in Documents, using insert-tab, JAWS said that a folder was 3 of 48, which is precisely what it should say. The status line said there were 48 folders, and my curser was on the third one down. Today, it's gone back to saying 3 of 29, and for the last folder, it says, 32 of 32. My screen is maximized. I tried restoring it, and nothing changed. But the inconsistency baffles me. Window-Eyes consistently reports the correct position, and JAWS is set to do so. Is this a bug that could be fixed? With Outlook, including 2010, you're not even told what number email you're at as you go down the list, a feature Outlook Express had, or has. That's my only regret about giving up OE. However, your mention of a word search makes me wonder which type of search you're doing. If you just type a word into the initial search field, you're searching only subject lines. The way I search for all words, whether in the subject line or the message field, is the following: Control-shift-f to commence the search. Tab once Down arrow once Shift-tab once. Note: If the shortcuts are made with Firefox, the shortcut will only work if Firefox is your default browser. I'll post steps for shortcuts that can be assigned to open with a particular browser at a later time. There may be an easier way, but here is what I do to create a desktop icon for a web page. 1. Open your browser to the desired website. 2. Press, Alt + D, to move to and highlight the address bar , or pressing, F6, works as well. 3. Press, Control + C, to copy the URL to the clipboard. 4. Move to the desktop and make sure that nothing is selected. Either press F5 when on the desktop or hold down the control key and press the spacebar to deselect anything that is already selected. 5. Press the, applications / context menu key, / right mouse click, to bring up the context menu items. 6. Choose new from the menu and then choose create shortcut from the sub menu. 7. A 2 stage dialogue opens. The default field is address. Paste the address from the desired web page into the address field and tab once to the next button and press space bar. 8. A second page opens and the default field says 'type a name for the shortcut.' Type in a recognizable name for the shortcut and tab to next and press space bar. 9. A finish button should appear. Press space bar or enter on it and you are done. This is a bit convoluted, but it seems to work quite well. Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers! Sennt from my iBarstool. Now type sndvol and press enter and bingo, you are on the volume control. I have read you can add a -f flag, e.g. sndvol -f to bring u p the master volume directly but I found that even just sndvol will do this. Here is the Jaws speech history as to what this sounds like, first without and then with the -f switch, I am using just the Windows key/Cortana search box and not the run command, note that the Jaws speech history gives you the result after you type every letter of “sndvol”, if you type it fast you never hear most of that, but I left it in just to show it: Cortana S, Search box edit Sn, Snipping Tool, Desktop app snd, See web results, Press right to open preview sndv, See web results, Press right to open preview sndvo, See web results, Press right to open preview sndvol, Run command – this is where I pressed enter Volume Mixer - Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) dialog Speakers Speakers up down slider 83 – I am now pressing the down arrow several times and again the up arrow 82 percent 81 percent 80 percent 81 percent 82 percent 83 percent Now here is what it sounds like with the -f switch added after SndVol, I left out all the suggestions which come up after each letter and go straight to the final one: Cortana sndvol -f, Run command dialog up down slider 83 82 percent 81 percent Only difference seems to be that adding the -f switch doesn’t verbalize Volume Mixer - Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) dialog, Speakers, Speakers and instead it says right away the volume percentage. Re: [JAWS-Users] Rumola, for IE?
Hi Glenn, I pulled this off another list some time ago, please note that the poster is now deceased. HTH, Rick Justice "Tomorrow's another day, another way!" "and if tomorrow never comes, problem solved!" From: "Carlos" <carlos1...@nyc.rr.com> Date: Tuesday, January 12, 2016 10:32 AM I have revised the instructions to make them a bit more thorough and complete. Note that these instructions will work with IE. They may or may not work with other browsers that do not already support the extension version of Rumola, but the specifics will vary. 1. Go to the main Rumola website here, http://skipinput.com/ 2. Highlight the link labeled .. RUMOLA with the Tab key (not the Arrow keys). It is important to use the Tab key since the Arrow keys may or may not properly highlight the link. 3. Note that pressing Enter on the link before this next step may possibly make it more effective, but it is not strictly necessary. In either case, after you have highlighted the link with the Tab key and possibly pressed Enter, press the Applications key and choose "Add to favorites..." from the context menu. 4. In the "Create in" combo box, select "Favorites Bar" - Original Message - From: "Glenn At Home" <glenner...@cableone.net> To: <JAWS-Users-List@jaws-users.com> Sent: Monday, March 26, 2018 9:39 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Rumola, for IE? Hi, I've been looking for Rumola for Internet Explorer, and I haven't found it. I installed the add-on for Chrome, but IE is my main browser. Thank you if anyone can send me a link for it if it is up-to-date for IE. FYI, Rumola is a captcha solver, for those web pages that ask us to enter the letters in the window. Even if they were legible, they aren't accessible. There are times I'd pay a couple bucks to have someone read the captcha for me. Looks like it's available for FF, but I'm not ready to go back to FF yet. I found one on the Woolworths website in accessibility settings, but I had to keep moving down headings to get to it because I couldn’t remember if there was a shortcut. Also, if you are filling in a form that is set out like a table, is there a quick way of getting to the submit button halfway through the table, if the rest of the questions or fields are not applicable to you? It is so tiresome having to tab seven or eight times before you reach the button. I know pressing the letter B takes you to whatever buttons are on the page, but if you are in the middle of text fields, this can be tricky. Any feedback would be useful. Hi Sandy, Jaws doesn't know what you want to hear or not hear, you have to tell it, that is what the different verbosity levels are for. Re: [JAWS-Users] Putting JAWS in Advanced User Mode
Hi Sandy, No, the Advanced Verbosity setting just announces less information for advanced users that are comfortable with less information being spoken while navigating. If you explore these options in the settings center, you will see the difference in each setting, also using the Jaws help topics on your computer can be very helpful in discovering and learning the features of Jaws. Re: [JAWS-Users] Changeing Verbosity Levels
Actually, it is not called user mode, it is the verbosity levels for Jaws, and Mike has already given a brief overview of how it works. In addition, all 3 levels of verbosity are configurable. Just trying to keep the terms correct, because if new users of Jaws go looking for the wrong terms, they will not find what they are looking for. - Original Message - From: "Mike B."To: Sent: Tuesday, March 06, 2018 7:58 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Putting JAWS in Advanced User Mode Hi Sandy, Jaws has 3 modes of operation. Re: [JAWS-Users] Researcher
Well, if the proper names are used, then everyone would understand what is being discussed. Apparently , you need someone to teach you how to ask for help, since telling us that something isn't working, doesn't tell us what problem you are having. When someone asks for help, and are not clear in what they are writing, it is difficult for others to offer the proper suggestions. Perhaps if you re-state your problem, help will soon follow. Hi Vicki, In Windows 7, Internet Explorer11, you would not look for Windows Defender, , instead open Internet Explorer, then open the tools menu, and then internet options. Next, go to the advanced tab, and down arrow to security , then arrow to disable smart screen filter, and check it with the spacebar Tab to the okay button, and spacebar it to accept the changes and close the internet options dialogue. Finally, alt F4 to close Internet Explorer, then reopen it and try your download. HTH, Rick Justice "Tomorrow's another day, another way!" If you do not currently have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder, create a new file with the full name of default.jkm in your JAWS user folder and add the following lines: [Common Keys] PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey If you already have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder just add the line PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey In the [Common Keys]Section of the file. It is dangerous to have a copy of the default.jsb file in your JAWS user folder. Any JAWS update can install a new version of default.jsb that can make your copy of that file useless. And has been pointed out, you can only use that copy of default.jsb with the version and update that were used to save it. But using a keystroke instead will be compatible with any version of JAWS. Also the JKM file can be moved to any version of JAWS. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Ralph Supernaw Sent: Thursday, January 25, 2018 02:03 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 2018 repair Thanks for the help. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws version confusion
This is incorrect! There is a big difference between and update, and an upgrade. An update will have the same version number at the beginning, such as Jaws 18, and upgrade will have a completely new number such as Jaws2018. Updates to a particular version of Jaws are at no cost to the user, since they tend to correct issues in that version. however, upgrades do count against an SMA, since they introduce a new version of the software typically with new features. - Original Message - From: "Justin Williams"To: Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2018 8:57 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws version confusion JAWS 2018 is the updated version of JAWS 18. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of sandy Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2018 8:19 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws version confusion please folks, please explain to someone who isn't as tech savy as the majority of you, why there needs to be more than 1 jaws version per jaws number? -Original Message- From: Dave...Oregonian Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2018 12:08 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws version confusion Gary, You asked: "...I have installed all updates that jaws has told me about. also received a jaws 2018 cd. just wondering if the updates I installed covered that." Screen Shade for Additional Privacy For additional privacy, use the JAWS Screen Shade to prevent others from seeing what you are typing or reading by turning the screen black. This feature is available in Windows 10 and Windows 8. To turn on the Screen Shade, press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by the PRINTSCREEN key, or triple tap with three fingers on a touch screen. Alternatively, Screen Shade can be toggled on or off using Quick Settings (INSERT+V). Once enabled, the contents of your screen can no longer be seen. The Screen Shade remains active until toggled back off, or JAWS is restarted. Screen Shade can also be turned off by doing a right mouse click. Note: Screen Shade is strictly a privacy feature and will not increase the battery life on a laptop or tablet. Additionally, Screen Shade is only available when JAWS is running by itself. It cannot be used when running Fusion, or when running JAWS together with ZoomText or MAGic. Speech On Demand Speech On Demand is a feature that allows you to limit the amount of JAWS speech you hear as you navigate windows and documents or perform other actions using hot keys. By default, when using Speech On Demand, JAWS only announces actions that are associated with a limited set of hot keys. In addition, mouse echo and typing echo are still available, which allows JAWS to read text that you point to with the mouse pointer and speak characters and words as you type. You can quickly toggle between Speech On Demand and full speech using a convenient layered command, or even make Speech On Demand the default speech mode when JAWS starts. For JAWS users who rely heavily on Braille or for users of Fusion that can see well enough to use the screen for tracking focus, too much speech can be overwhelming while navigating using the keyboard and mouse. However, users still want to be able to use speech to read once they have moved to a location on the screen, or just checking a Window Title, column heading in a table or spread sheet, or even reading the time from the System tray. In both these situations, Speech On Demand can be very helpful. You will find that switching applications with ALT+TAB or using ARROW keys to move through a document are silenced. Speech is only triggered when using a limited set of reading commands such as speaking the current character, word, line, paragraph, or doing a Say All. Granted, people would have a hard time getting the information if speech is set to a fast speed, however, if someone really wants your information, all they have to do is record it with a recorder, then slow it down with audio software. iBooks, for example, has this ability, so while I can appreciate VFO wanting to give new features, this one seems kind of redundant to me. I mean, if you can really use natural language to do all sorts of stuff, finding things changing settings etc., without having to memorize all the stuff that goes with that in terms of keyboarding and what keystroke does work, it could be kind of nice.
