Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Hot Key

2018-05-28 Thread Orlando Enrique Fiol

Hola Cristbal.

First, let me clarify that by a hotkey, you mean a shortcut key to
run Jaws. You lose the shortcut key after each update because Jaws
recreates the actual shortcut in Program Data and you must redefine
the shortcut key. Most Windows programs install this way, unless they
examine the current shortcut file or allow the user to keep it as is.

Aha, cool idea! I kind of stopped bothering with a hotkey a while ago, but I
never thought of this at all, so maybe I'll reinstate it.

Hi Geoff & Cristóbal,

You can try assigning the shortcut keystroke from a different Jaws icon, and
I believe it will solve your disappearing keystroke problem. I assign my
pin to Taskbar shortcut from this Jaws icon and never have to mess with it
after a Jaws build update. Try the following:
1. Open the Start menu, navigate to the Programs folder and open it.
2. Use first letter navigation to the version of Jaws you want to assign the
shortcut keystroke to. Press the letter, J, until you reach JAWS2018, for
example.
3. With the preferred version of JAWS highlighted Press enter or right arrow
to open, up or down arrow to, JAWS, and this is the icon that you want to
use for creating the shortcut keystroke.
4. So, with the JAWS icon highlighted press, Alt + Enter, to open the JAWS
properties, or press the applications key or Shift + F10 to open the context
menu, and press enter on properties.
5. Assign your keystroke, tab to, Apply, press the spacebar, tab to, Okay,
and press Enter.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Not that I know of, but honestly, it's not like it's that bit a deal. I just
go through the install and reboot and go into Jaws properties tab down,
re-do the hotkey and presto. It takes like what? 10 seconds if that.

I have a question about Jaws and setting up a hot key. Is there a way I can
set up a Jaws hot key and not lose it every time Jaws updates to a new
version? NVDA for example never loses its hotkey. Jaws should be the same.

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Hot Key

2018-05-28 Thread JM Casey
I don't think so, no. Between full version numbers this makes sense, as they
are supposed to be able to exist simultaneously on the system and thus the
versions have different path/filenames, etc. But I also don't really see why
a hotkey shouldn't be retained after a cumulative update to a version.

I think the NVDA hotkey works quite differently; it seems to be part of
NVDA's instalation whereas with JAWS it's entirely up to you whether you
want one or not. It's a Windows thing.

Just re enter the shortcut and hit ok. If that doesn't work, hit apply and
OK. Your friend can also use the window + m to go to the desktop and hit the
letter j and enter. It will open JFW without having to reboot the computer.
If they have more than one version of JFW, make sure the letter J isn't
being use for another version

 Hi All,

We created a hot key for Jaws 10.x through the properties shortcut page on
 a
friends computer. When she unloads Jaws with the Insert + F4 key stroke,
then tries to restart with control, alt, + J keystroke nothing happens.
 She
then has to reboot the computer to get Jaws running again. What are we
doing wrong. She is running XP Pro Jaws 10.x. All advice will be

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws hot key not working

2009-03-11 Thread Flor Lynch
On the desktop shortcut to JAWS10, alt+enter, and then tab through and press
the letter j. If a dong is heard, then j cannot be applied here. If a dong
is not heard, tab through straight to OK and hit enter. DO NOT HIT
SHIFT-TAB as that will in effect undo it. If after all that it didn't take,
use a different combination (like ctrl-shift-j, or alt-shift-j, or
shift-ctrl-alt-j, or some other suitable combo that might involve the
version name or number.) Finally, if it can't work, use narrator or another
screen reader to help in doing it. Using narrator, it will work, and it
seems to me that you can shift-tab then if you must.

Gentle reminder: This topic has been beaten to death many times over the
past two years, and there are copious amounts of emails on it in the list
archive. This problem is not new, and has not really been solved either.
What I've offered above are 'best practices' based on my experience and
others verified reports on what routines work reliably.

1. Don't press apply button. Tab to OK and press.
2. try using a different key combo. Ctrl-alt-j may not work on that
computer, due to some quirk. (I've come across some possible keyboard

So you have to be in the jaws application to find out?
I thought you could be in like Oe or Ie or even at the desktop and press
something to hear the version of jaws you are currently running, hmmm.

 It's not insert-control-V and it's not insert-Q, I could only tell by
looking in the verbosity and I knew I was using 8, but a weird thing
happened, I was going to pop in to All in play and happen to remember I
didn't choose to have another version of Jaws installed at the time of
installing the games. So, I thought I unloaded jaws 9 and then I would
 hit
the hot key for Jaws 8 and go about my merry way..
But when I pressed the hot key, I heard jaws 9 40 minute demo mode, which
 threw me for a loop!

Now I'm been using that jaws 9 since I installed it this morning way
 longer
 than 40 minutes,lol.
 So wonder what that was?

 Thanks,

 Patricia

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Hot Key Question

2008-08-26 Thread Patricia Dunbar
So you have to be in the jaws application to find out?
I thought you could be in like Oe or Ie or even at the desktop and press
something to hear the version of jaws you are currently running, hmmm.

It's not insert-control-V and it's not insert-Q, I could only tell by
looking in the verbosity and I knew I was using 8, but a weird thing
happened, I was going to pop in to All in play and happen to remember I
didn't choose to have another version of Jaws installed at the time of
installing the games. So, I thought I unloaded jaws 9 and then I would hit
the hot key for Jaws 8 and go about my merry way..
But when I pressed the hot key, I heard jaws 9 40 minute demo mode, which
threw me for a loop!

Now I'm been using that jaws 9 since I installed it this morning way longer
than 40 minutes,lol.
So wonder what that was?

Thanks,

Patricia
