[JAWS-Users] external hard drives
Thanks David and others for your speedy answers. When I plug it in to the USB drive, will it start backing up my computer itself? Or can I choose what gets put on it like using a flash drive? Do I need or want to back up programs, or in my case I just want to back up mainly music and books and documents? thanks again for all your answers. I have not bought one yet, I am looking on Amazon right now for the best one. Does anyone have a good model or brand that you might suggest besides seagate which I am thinking of buying? Re: [JAWS-Users] external hard drives
It should act like a flash drive in that your system will pick it up but then it is your deal what goes on it ETC. Normally they are empty and in most cases I have seen if there would be any software already on the drive for you to install on your system it won't be accessible. I just got a call from a guy who told me that: http://www.buy.com has a 2 TB Phantom USB 3.0 drive for $90. I did check and it is absolutely true. I have a Phantoms for a few years already only it is a 1 TB drive. Re: [JAWS-Users] external hard drives
When you first install the drive, there may be a dialogue asking if you want to install software, schedule backups, etc. but you can back out of it and use the drive just the way you would use any other drive. Windows will assign it a drive letter, and you will see it in the list of drives in Windows Explorer or My Computer, or just Computer if you are using Windows 7. Re: [JAWS-Users] external hard drives
Jim For the most part, an external drive is an external drive. Make sure you get one that works with Windows, USB 2 or 3, the 3 is faster if you have a newer computer that supports USB 3.0 but it will be backward compatible with Usb 2.0. Unless you get a drive that incorporates automated data backup, no it won't back up anything automatically. You can use imaging software if you want to make an image of your whole system, or you can use a number of different data backup options including windows backup. - Original Message - From: jim To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, August 17, 2012 11:37 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] external hard drives Thanks David and others for your speedy answers. Re: [JAWS-Users] external hard drives
I don't know about the software that comes with the hard drive, but I have two or three external hard drives of different makes, and I always use Windows Backup, which seems to work fine, this is with 64-bit Windows7. If it is a USB deal then just plug it in and away it will go. There is no setup to worry about in most cases and I own a sea gate among other models.
