this a very old item but I wanted to mention something on this.

the biggest trouble with external drives is they can go bad in just a year
or two, usually the power supply going out in the things.

unfortunately with the repair industry going the way it is right now, you
spend almost as much as you would to fix the drive as to replace it with a
new one of the same size (top of the line goes up in capacity so your
lower

unit costs less) but... you have data on that disk, and you may be in dire
need of it.

I myself build and sell custom two piece external drives. there more
expensive, but have an advantage, if the power supply goes out you or I
can

buy a new case, extract the drive, and get the info back on line.
2. my units are built to your specs, so have as many drives and hold as
much

information as you can afford up to the industry maximums.
if the drive goes bad, you (or I) can take it out of the case and either
send it out for recovery (I have a lower cost company I generally use)
either right now, or later when you can afford it, and we can put a new
drive in the case if you want so you can continue to backup with as little
cost and minimal inconvenience as possible.

just wanted folks to know.

Hi list:

If I bought a Seagate external hard drive for my windows 7 desktop, would
Jaws be able to read the various menus and set up options that are in the
built in software of the external hard drive?
I have never backed up my computer before, so sorry about my ignorance on
this issue.
Does any one have another recommendation for a easy to use external hard
drive that works well with Jaws?
thank you...

2012-08-17 Thread jim
Thanks David and others for your speedy answers.
When I plug it in to the USB drive, will it start backing up my computer itself?
Or can I choose what gets put on it like using a flash drive?
Do I need or want to back up programs, or in my case I just want to back up
mainly music and books and documents?
thanks again for all your answers.
I have not bought one yet, I am looking on Amazon right now for the best one.
Does anyone have a good model or brand that you might suggest besides seagate
which I am thinking of buying?

It should act like a flash drive in that your system will pick it up but
then it is your deal what goes on it ETC. Normally they are empty and in
most cases I have seen if there would be any software already on the drive
for you to install on your system it won't be accessible.

I just got a call from a guy who told me that:

http://www.buy.com

has a 2 TB Phantom USB 3.0 drive for $90. I did check and it is absolutely
true. I have a Phantoms for a few years already only it is a 1 TB drive.

Re: [JAWS-Users] external hard drives

2012-08-17 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
When you first install the drive, there may be a dialogue asking if you
want to install software, schedule backups, etc. but you can back out of
it and use the drive just the way you would use any other drive.
Windows will assign it a drive letter, and you will see it in the list
of drives in Windows Explorer or My Computer, or just Computer if you
are using Windows 7.

Re: [JAWS-Users] external hard drives

Jim

For the most part, an external drive is an external drive. Make sure you
get one that works with Windows, USB 2 or 3, the 3 is faster if you have a
newer computer that supports USB 3.0 but it will be backward compatible with
Usb 2.0.

Unless you get a drive that incorporates automated data backup, no it won't
back up anything automatically. You can use imaging software if you want to
make an image of your whole system, or you can use a number of different
data backup options including windows backup.

I don't know about the software that comes with the hard drive, but I have
two or three external hard drives of different makes, and I always use
Windows Backup, which seems to work fine, this is with 64-bit Windows7.
