It might surprise you that I noticed the fact you did not place her entire
name in the subject line. It is still bending the rules, so I should like to
terminate this conversation.

Makes sense, but two points:

1. I didn't give her full name.

2. My reason for putting a first name there was to try to ensure this lister
realized I was responding to her post which, as I explained in my message,
I'd inadvertently deleted. No one else was responding to her situation,

Laura, I don't have Windows 10, but this may get you started. With Windows
7, the Windows update icon goes into the system tray, which I access with
JAWS key+F11. Arrow down to and click on that icon to start the process of
downloading and installing the updates.

There's more, but I'm pretty sure it's different from here with Windows 10,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows update notification question

2018-01-21 Thread Mike B.
Hi Laura,

It's my understanding that Windows 10 has a feature called, Fast Start, that
when your computer is off it's really not, but in a hybernation sleep mode
to allow the computer to download / install updates when you're not using
your computer. Below is a note on how to check your update status.

From: David Moore
Hi,
If you have win10 home, you cannot choose which updates you want to install
anymore. With win10 pro, you can still do this. All updates are done for you
in the background. If you want to check if you need updates, here is what
you do. Press windows+I to open the settings app. Press the right arrow
clear over to update and security and press enter. Now, tab once, and you
will hear check for updates usually, updates are ready to install, or
windows is checking for updates. If it says check for updates, turn on the
touch cursor if you are using JAWS. Left arrow once, and you will hear all
of the information about when your last updates were installed, and you will
hear your computer is up to date. You do not hear this information without
turning on the touch cursor on check for updates and arrowing left once. If
you hear that updates are ready to install, tab a few times and press enter
to install the updates. This is the short version that will work for you.
Take care, all.

Touch Cursor Keystrokes:

table with 2 columns and 13 rows
To activate the Touch Cursor
SHIFT+NUM PAD PLUS
Next Object
RIGHT ARROW or TAB
Prior Object
LEFT ARROW or SHIFT+TAB
Next Object by Type
DOWN ARROW
Prior Object by Type
UP ARROW
Cycle Through Object Navigation Types
PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN
First Object
CTRL+HOME
Last Object
CTRL+END
Say Current Object
INSERT+UP ARROW
Say All with Touch Cursor
INSERT+DOWN ARROW
Route Touch Cursor to Focused Object
INSERT+NUM PAD PLUS
Text Review
NUM PAD SLASH or INSERT+ENTER
Advanced Navigation
NUM PAD STAR
table end

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Hello,

Using a Dell laptop, Windows 10 creator, and Jaws 18 ..

The last two times I turned my computer off I've had problems. When I turn
the computer back on I can't get Jaws to speak and have had to hold the
power button down to shut off the computer, wait a minute or so, and then
turn the computer back on. One of those times Jaws said that Windows
couldn't complete the update. I have left my computer on since yesterday
for fear of not being able to use it. My independence is totally reliant
upon this computer .. Being able to read my mail, pay my bills, etc. I live
alone and do not have sighted help readily available. Today, I was away
from the computer for a short bit and when I came back there was a message
that said "important Windows update notification" .. I pressed alt + F4 and
that went away.

How do I find where and what the notification is? I've never updated
anything without sighted help and am not sure quite what to do. Should I
just contact Microsoft disability or is this something I can take care of
myself without putting myself in a position to not be able to use the
computer? Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Adrian..is the update in question already in your system.  I've noticed a raft
of updates this month - about four of them.  But all installed successfully.
In a case such as yours, I'd call Microsoft's accessibility line for help.  I
have generally found them helpful. Sorry for the punt.

2016-10-29 Thread anna vimini
yes that helps thanks my computer is three years old so I guess that is
the reason.

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows update in windows 8.1
It would depend on how old your computer is, and the hard ware your
running.

My older computer takes about twenty minutes to check for updates, but
my laptop, which was purchased last year with 16 gigs or RAM and a solid
state drive,

takes about a minute.

The older computer has 2 gigs or RAM, and a standard 5200 RPM hard
drive and like I said, it'll take anywhere from twenty minutes to a half
hour to check

for updates.

Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] windows update on windows 8.1

no it does not disrupt my machine I just wanted to know because I
thought it was taking a little longer to check for updates and only
finding one update.

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows update on windows 8.1
Hi, Anna.

No one using 8.1 has responded, so I'll give you my experience on my
windows 7 system. I just ran Windows update and it went very quickly,
from checking
to installation. It took two or three minutes at most, which is
unusually fast. The update must have been relatively small. Has it been
a while since you've
run Windows update? That could explain the long time. Otherwise, I
imagine any number of factors could have slowed down the process when
you went through
it: some temporary connection problem, excessive downloading at that
time. I find I can still work on my PC while windows update is going on
in the background.
Does it disrupt your machine? Otherwise, I doubt there's anything to
worry about.

[JAWS-Users] windows update on windows 8.1

2016-10-27 Thread anna vimini

Yes I know but jaws 15 does not work on windows 10

and I do not have the money to upgrade to jaws 18

and also because I am not ready for another assessment with the CNIB for
another two years.

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows update in windows 8.1
I'm not sure. you do know that if you are blind you can still update to
windows10 for free. I found some stuff that I want to run does not work
on windows8

and windows8.1.

but no it should not take an hour it should take no more than 2 or 3
minutes to check for updates.

[JAWS-Users] Windows Update in Windows 10

2016-08-20 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi

In Windows Update for Windows 7, and I believe Windows 8, we can choose
which Windows updates are automatically downloaded and/or installed. Are
there settings in Windows 10 that let us make those choices or are Windows
updates just automatically downloaded and installed come h or high water?
In Windows 7 I have all Windows updates automatically downloaded. I have
important updates automatically installed and optional updates are held
until I decide to install them. I would like to be able to do this
in Windows 10.

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows update in windows 8.1
when windows update is checking for updates for your installation of
windows/microsoft programs, it is being determined which updates are
needed, and if
an update has been hidden or is still categorized as optional, microsoft
has the ability to change the status to important for that hidden or
optional
update. so, the updates will be installed at some point, unless you
interfere.

anyone, please correct me if I am wrong about this.

When you hide an update, you only remove it from the list in Windows Update.
This does not prevent the update from appearing again.

I am using jaws 16, windows 7, on a 64 bit pc. I wanted to postpone
windows update but I can only find the restart now button. Where is the
combo box to change the time to postpone the update time setting that I
see on my 32 bit machine running windows seven? The issue is that after
the pc reboots several times the windows update keeps failing and at
3:00 am the whole thing starts over again asking me if I want to restart
the computer. I changed the setting to once a week for checking for
updates but I suspect if windows update does not complete successfully I
will be back at square one all over again.

check your setting on window update if you have setting. You can set it up
by day by week, by specific day or week.

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows update

2014-05-03 Thread Jim Pursley
Windows updates come as important and optional. The important ones are
divided between security and program updates. I have selected to view
each update before I download them, as I don't want Microsoft's Bing
Desktop or other stuff they send in optional updates. My process is
surely more time-consuming but I feel better informed (for example I
needed a prerequisite security update to get the most recent serious bug
fix for IE10) If I had automatic updates, I would not have received the
vital update because the box which selects the update was unchecked
(because I did not have the prerequisite one).

The latest security update for IE10 was issued Thursday, May 1, so you
can probably toss out the specific schedule idea.
check your setting on window update if you have setting. You can set
it up by day by week, by specific day or week.

guilty of this too. We should change the time it checks at.

[JAWS-Users] Windows Update Issue

2014-01-02 Thread Trish
Hello,

I need to find a dtae when I installed an update for MS Framework. When I go to
the list of installed updates, I find several that are listed as Frame update,
but what I can't find is the date it was installed, I need to remove it and not
sure which one to remove since I can't find the date, can someone help me
figure this out?

I did while in the list do Alt V and checked details, however it seemed to just
show 2 items and none were the ones I needed, and I could not move around to
get any of the other items in the list to show up.

I am doing all this on windows 7 laptop using Jaws 13

Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Windows Update website

2009-07-07 Thread Chris Hallsworth

Hello all,
Has anyone had problems checking/unchecking items on the Windows Update
website? It seems very spurious using JAWS 10 and IE8 under Windows XP Home
SP3. I tried to update my friend's Windows via JAWS Tandem, and because I
thought it was all messed up I wanted to start fresh by first stopping the
automatic updates service and deleting the software distribution folder, but
I couldn't even do that because the machine froze at her end.
Please advise as I felt my session with her was a big failure. Maybe I
should consider going back to IE7, but just for that website I don't feel I
should.

There are some terms being interchanged here, that shouldn't be, to avoid
confusion.
1. Windows, refers to the operating system installed on your computer.
There are many different versions of Windows, such as XP and Vista.
And to further complicate things the version of Windows currently in beta
is
called Windows 7.
2. Internet Explorer, commonly referred to as I E,is an internet browser,
used for accessing the internet.
There are several versions of I E, such as versions 6, 7 and 8.
Version 8, is the latest version.
3. Outlook Express, commonly referred to as O E, is an e-mail client,
used

for sending and receiving e-mail messages.
As Flor stated earlier, there is no version higher than 6, because
Microsoft
changed it and gave it another name.

Dear Yvonne,

If you question is related to Internet Explorer 8, then the answer to
your

question is that yes it is a full version now. It will install over 7,
but
as is the case with earlier versions, you will not lose any of your
favourites or addresses.
