[lace] RE: Writing to the list.

2017-01-17 Thread lizlace
Thank you Jeri, and Avital, who sent to me privately about the correct address
for the list. I have always been using the Arachne one, - except for this
once, when the Arachne one was rejected. I have no idea why my email had all
those weird signs in it. I hope it is not a permanent issue.

I am now trying again, to see what happens this time!

I am using the default system in W.10 for my mail, and I do Not like it. –
Maybe it is because it is so different to what I have been used to, - but this
has everything hidden – no contacts list I can access, and hides messages
– (it seems to sort them into subject order, and hides them behind the first
one, and I miss some of the hidden ones, I think. This is why I will be
staying with the Digest, - I get them all in order!!

Regards from Liz. in sunny, but cooler (thankfully) Melbourne, Oz.

Re: [lace] Promoting Lace - "Lace in Fashion" exhibit in Bath

2017-01-17 Thread Adele Shaak
Interesting that when this silver tissue dress was photographed for the guide
to the Museum of Costume in Bath, it was pictured with a wide collar of what
appears to be reticella lace (white), laid over the lace at the sides and back
of the neckline. The guide was published in 1980 - given that the same dress is
now shown without the collar, I wonder if they decided the collar would not
have been worn with that dress, or if they just left it off for another reason.

2017-01-17 Thread Jane Partridge
I think Malvary is wishing January away quickly - the next issue of Lace isn't
due to be published until the last day of the month. (Just in case anyone
panics thinking theirs is late).

I'm another of the team of proofreaders, but tend to read and forget what's in
it until my magazine arrives (otherwise as I've already read it cover to
cover, it would make it pointless having the paper copy!) - so yes, I did know
about what was going on, but unless I get to see exhibitions for myself don't
feel I can comment on them; time, travel expenses and other commitments mean I
rarely get to see exhibitions unless they are local and in easy public
transport reach.

Jeri will be pleased to know that there is an article about this exhibition
in the next issue of Lace (165), which should be arriving any time soon.

[lace] Lace in Prague

2017-01-17 Thread Maureen
Hello

Cindy you raised a question on 11th January about touring with beaders and
you asked for details of places in Prague and Dagmar, on the 16th January,
you kindly answered her questions.

.Cindy,
if you can make it to the city of Vamberk, there is a beautiful lace
museum. I am assuming that when you mention beads and blown glass that
you'll be traveling to Jablonec. Vamberk is only about 2 hours from there,
so you might be able to swing it.
In Prague itself, there are often small exhibitions taking place in local
galleries and the fiber arts tech school. If you reach out to me closer to
the date, I can check on what's available.
>From the ongoing exhibits, I'd recommend the jewish museum in Prague which
carries some amazing golden wire lace and I also hear that the museum of
industrial design is reopening and will likely have some lace on exhibit.
The folk museum (Naprstkovo muzeum) tends to have folk costumes on display
which feature variety of lace.
Hope this help, feel free to reach out to me direct for details.
Dagmar, a Czech transplant to Wisconsin..

I have been asked to add/verify the following information by a friend of
mine who says:

.Just one mistake: Czech folk culture is displayed in Ethnographic Museum of
the National Museum

http://www.nm.cz/Historical-Museum/Long-term-Exhibitions-HM/Czech-Folk-Cultu
re.html

Naprstek Museum (Naprstkovo museum) has other collections (Asian, African
and American Cultures)...

[lace] Promoting Lace - "Lace in Fashion" exhibit in Bath

2017-01-17 Thread Jeriames
Did anyone read my reply to Robin in Canberra on the 9th that included the
"Lace in Fashion" exhibit that will be at the Fashion Museum in Bath
England for a year? You'd think there would be some excitement.

No pictures? Does anyone have a website address of a photo of the 1660
"silver tissue dress made from fine silk, woven with silver thread and
trimmed with parchment lace"? This is described as "a rare survival of
parchment
lace, a delicate fabric made using tiny strips of parchment or paper,
wrapped in silk and incorporated into the design of the bobbin-made lace."

A g**gl* search for "parchment lace" brought me to a craft magazine. Our
own archives brought me to parchment lace prickings/patterns. I would like
to know more about this: the thread and how it was made, the bobbin lace
technique, and what the reference to "parchment lace" really means. It
would be an interesting subject to discuss on Arachne, and for you to share
with your lace friends.

My source for this lace news was an American. Did 1,000 of our members
hear about this exhibit already? Is my AOL service so bad that I did not
receive the news earlier, and you did? The article says they had assistance
from some expert volunteers from *The Lace Guild*. Are those volunteers
reading this memo? Article also mentions Australian input.

It is troublesome that after 20 years of trying to "show by example" when
it comes to distributing lace news as soon as possible, I have failed.

Efforts to bring more Arachne members into the "lace conversation" has
bombed.

There is no viable industry for handmade lace in the 21st C. It relies on
those of us with a love for this textile to promote it in whatever
platforms exist, or ones we create. Thank you again, Liz, for Arachne.

[lace] posting issues and a new lace adventure

2017-01-17 Thread Cindy from Dallas
Something I just discovered, is that when I have added Jeri’s e-mail address to
the contacts section on the Gmail website interface, I finally started receive
her e-mails again! I have tried a hundred other things, and I still do not
think Gmail should ban any e-mails from AOL when the address is not in
contacts, especially since I do not automatically know who it is we are not
receiving e-mails from! I did complain to Gmail about it, but I do not expect
that to make much of a difference. I guess I should check the archives to see
if I can identify any others. I did miss Jeri’s informative e-mails, and I
have this feeling I am missing some others that I used to see on an almost
regular basis.

I have started on a new lace adventure in this new year. I taught myself to
shuttle tat. Or maybe I should say I am working on teaching myself to tat, and
it has been fun so far, I have learned lots of different parts of tatting,
rings chains, split rings, joins, picots and double stitch of course. When I
get my first piece finished I will post a picture.

Re: [lace] RE: lace-digest V2017 #11 Lace Identification

2017-01-17 Thread Jeriames
Dear Liz and others with posting problems,

First, I wish to share that I called AOL techs three times between
Saturday and Monday about a new problem, and to complain about undelivered
mail.
All were in the Philippines. It is not a good way to reach a manager with
my complaints about undelivered mail. I demanded an American manager call
me this morning, but the phone does not ring

My senior center guru who comes to the house when computer problems arise,
has strongly recommended I not use Windows 10. And, I can see all these
funny characters in Liz's and other's memos. It is getting worse and worse.

Avital: reference to a lace-digest number on the subject line does not give
a way to look up our lace subjects. These features are not good for our
Arachne archives going forward!! (I have added Lace Identification to this
memo of mine.

Liz mentioned the adaptations lacemakers made to 19th C. laces, a subject
Devon introduced a few days ago. A long time ago, I wrote to Arachne how
difficult it would be to satisfactorily identify 20th C. laces - since many
of you are creatively branching out and mixing lace techniques in your
work. This creativity is a very good thing, but - whenever possible - please
write about your laces and how they came about, whenever possible to keep
with your collected laces. Your own documentation will be welcomed - in the
future.

Whenever I trim messages, I use ... to indicate text has been removed,
as you can see in Liz's message below this.

As to the changes in various laces over time – well, they did not have
