Thanks again to all who sent suggestions for narrow edgings. There are clearly
many more resources than I had ever contemplated. And thank you Corinne for
suggesting Alex's book! Although I don't know the individual laces well enough
to put my finger on many beyond Torchon, Milanese, Honiton & Idrija, I should
have started with the lace timeline. My fashionistas represent 1896 to 1904 so
matching them up with lace from the same era would have been a sensible place
to start. Apparently my brain was on holiday. I appreciate your collective

[lace] Miniature lace

2016-02-28 Thread Susan
Thank you all for some great suggestions! My purpose is to create narrow lace
for seam treatments on a crazy quilt project. My 1/4" to 3/8" lace on hand is
either machine made (1950's vintage) or tatted/crocheted (older). Currently,
my search for miniature bobbin lace edgings/patterns is limited by my resources
at hand--Springett, Gil's Silver & Gold Edgings, free patterns posted on the
internet & the public library. My CQ blocks feature turn of the century
fashion elements so my lace needs to be light & feminine. My Springett pattern
was an arched frame for a greeting card that I "straightened" to make
continuous repeats. I never thought I would say that I am tired of French fans
(!!) but I would like to try something different & more narrow. Shirley, I do
like the idea of fir tree fans & I do remember seeing edgings with alternating
firs & another fan. Brenda, I have resisted resizing basic edgings after my
debacle with losing the charm of Honiton. As you say, the!
re is some trial & error & I was hoping to avoid error from the get go!
Karen, I hope I am not being unreasonable by aiming for narrower lace. Perhaps
between a simple pattern & 140 thread, it will work. So far, my online search
didn't result in a simple edging suitable for resizing so I will start with the
library's copy of Jan Tregidgo's Torchon book. BTW--while searching online, I
found a wonderful site that I had not seen before.
Kantkring-hunebed.nl. There are some lovely butterflies posted. Is this
person on Arachne? Thanks again for all the suggestions as I attempt my next
steps. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Palm Beach Gardens, FL USA

Hi I have done quite a bit of miniature lace and find silk thread perfect to
use as you can divide it to the size you want. Although the Bart and
Francis silk is a good size. Pipers silk also have a fine silk which can be
used. You also need very fine pins - and a finer pricker. I attended a
workshop with Ros Snowdon and this started me on the miniature lace.

Any BL pattern can be reduced (or enlarged) to suit your own requirements.

Sometimes it’s a bit of trial and error to get the right size, and as Karen
says there is a limit as to how small one can actually work.
Use this table
http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/lace/threadsize/threadsize.html

which is also in the Threads for lace book, to work out what size thread you
need to use once you have reduced your pattern.

I'm sure the lady did her best, but I don't think it's a particularly good
attempt at a lace pillow. Looks as if she's just covered a circle of
cardboard with fabric. A very small amount of polyester filling to give it a
bit of shape would look better, or even a covered upside-down dome-backed
button. Whatever is used to make a pillow a few stitches through the cover
would catch the lace and thread in place.

And why do none of the people who make miniature pillows ever include a
miniature pricking?

The worst twelfth-scale pillow that comes up on ebay frequently is the one
which looked like a cushion from a sofa and has a piece of lace on it
running across it and three or four bobbins dangling from the headside.

Perhaps none of them have actually had a go at making lace, although perhaps
this particular lady has because she's got the lace running down the pillow
and the bobbins attached in pairs.

2007-01-28 Thread Alice Howell
Clive's story reminded me of the Lace School that a
secret pal sent to me from Australia many years ago.

It is a 5 round basket with a mouse Lace School set
up in it. There's a teacher mouse, a spool of thread,
and two student mice each with a cookie pillow (less
than 2c wide) on a stand. The wall behind the
students has a chart of the three basic bobbin lace
stitches, and two pictures -- one being the Queen.
Postage stamps were framed for the pictures.

The basket has a lacy edging around it, top and
bottom. The whole thing is really cute, and I have
put it out on my display table at demos sometimes.
(Sorry, I don't remember which SP sent it to me, but I
thank her anyway.)

Dear Mini Lovers,

When you click on lace pillow miniatures at the top of the Lace Dolls page,
you will be able to see several things that were described on Arachne in the
last few days.

The large normal-size pillow has the bunny to attract children. The
matching pincushion on this pillow was made from the oval form found in a new
watch
box.

The mini pink pillow has machine-made lace. There is a reason! It needs to
be strong (and replaceable), to withstand the trials of wear and tear. You
see, it has a brooch pin bar on the back, and also a gold metal loop so it can
be worn on a gold chain necklace. The pin bar prevents it from bouncing
around or flipping over when worn on a chain. Being a precious token of
friendship, it stays home.

The oval blue mini pillow (5 1/2 wide) was described earlier this week - at
least the bobbins were. The lace was made with regular-size bobbins on a
large pillow, and lace transferred to the mini roller and thread ends to the
mini
bobbins. The pattern is on the roller. To keep the bobbins in line and
secure, a gently curved brass wire is threaded through the spangles, secured
at
each end. With this many bobbins and intricate arrangement, it is best to
engineer a way to keep order!

I've seen small cookie pillows on eBay at times. But
why not just make one the size you want? Some stiff
cardboard, fiberfill, and fabric plus some glue would
do it. Or carve the shape from a small piece of foam
and cover it. Check your craft shop and stationery
store for tiny pins (sequin pins, perhaps). Carve
your bobbins from toothpicks or wooden matches (unless
you wish to pay the price of the miniature turned ones
that can be found on eBay.)

 Hello,

I'm looking for a small miniature lace pillow,
 measuring about 10 cm
(2,5 inch?) in diameter. I have seen it before, so I
 know it exists,
but I can't seem to find a seller. Does anyone know
 what I'm talking
about? My friend would like to have one as she loves
 to make lace but
also has dolls and wants to display her dolls with a
 lacepillow.

Is anyone here able to help me? :-)

Miniaturists:

Just some thoughts to get your creative juices flowing:

There are Japanese toothpicks that have a carved knob at one end and a point
at the other, so half the carving work is already done. (Pretty to use at
cocktail parties, which will give a clue as to where to find them.) You'll
have
to cut to the length you want at pointed end. Then, you can sand to a point
(like Honiton bobbins). Or, my mini-bobbins have thread wound around the knob
end, and tiny seed bead spangles at the cut end on thread loops. The drilled
holes in the toothpicks are very small - just large enough to put a very fine
threaded needle through.. You'll need fabric glue that dries clear for this
project to keep everything under control. And, wash your hands frequently, so
the lace and thread stays clean..

If you make tiny lace for your pillow: Make the lace with regular size
bobbins on a normal pillow. Then, unwind the thread from the normal bobbins
and
transfer just a bit of the thread to the miniatures.

Pins: Mine (less than 1/2) were bought at great expense from an archival
supplier when I was mounting a museum lace exhibit on covered foamcore panels.
The 1 pound box they came in is labeled Major Brass Bank Pins, Nickel Plated
- No. 8.Maybe there is a way to make from small Japanese needles used for
very fine silk embroidery.

I used dollhouse nails for pins. They're the right size and brass
coloured.

Re: [lace] miniature lace bobbins

2007-01-27 Thread CLIVE Rice
My friend, who is an artist, made me a lacemaker's cottage; rather a room in
a lacemaker's cottage. It has furniture and a tiny bolster pillow on a
stand. She made the bobbins by cutting the bristles from one of those
hairburshes with plastic bristles. They're just the right size; the knob on
the end of the plastic bristles as the head of the bobbin. She wound fine
wire on the distal body of the bobbin and continued the wire with tiny seed
beads to have Midland bobbins! Perfect. She even made molded tea cakes and
has a tea service on the sideboard! I love it and really should take it to
a lace day.

[lace] Miniature Lace Shops

2007-01-27 Thread Tregellas Family
Good morning (well, it is in Australia :-)

I've been reading the thread on the miniature lace pillows/bobbins.
Our Australian Lace Guild web page shows various photos of our miniature
lace shop which was made by some of our members and put together in 1993.
A lacemakers' husband did all the woodwork and this piece is very popular at
demonstrations (it even has a small light in it)

Cheers,
Shirley T. - Adelaide, South Australia where we are enjoying a cool respite
for a few days after 40 and 41deg. C temps. Hopefully this weather will
help our fire-fighters who have been joined by fire fighters from NZ, Canada
and the USA - thanks for all your help.

I saw that gorgeous miniature lace shop at the Adelaide AGM last year. It
looked absolutely divine. What a shame you can't send it around Australia!!!
I hope you will make more rooms to display at the next AGMs.

How lovely, Erika! Did you take the photos? That's when I regret not
having a digital camera!!
The only thing that could make it better would be having something
identifiable, like a coin, or a small stamp, or the beginning of a ruler,
in one corner to help us realize how small all those things are.
Congratulations on your win!! Where are you going to duisplay your Xmas
