RE: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Question...

2007-08-14 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Dawn:

Now *that's* a good reason. When reading films ordered from the Canadian
National Archives or the FHL I've often wondered if different copies of the
same film could be better. From what I've seen so far, though, there's
nothing in Mills about recording the film copy number in the source
citation. Maybe that's something to consider. Of course, I'm only on p. 50
of 'Evidence Explained' and it's a big book so perhaps she's already thought
of it.

Very interesting comment. Thanks.

Some years ago I ordered a census film from the FHL. The names on the
page I needed were obliterated. On another occassion, I was at the
Sacramento State Library where I looked at the same film. The page I
needed was beautiful and clear. I not only record the repository, but
also the line number, household number, and film details.

Subject: [LegacyUG] GenSmarts

I want GenSmarts to analyse a search list from my Legacy file
I put very specific search criteria into the search and had Legacy
produce a list

It is actually a list of those who might have served in WW1 and possible

be on the British Pension Records

I want Gensmarts to analyse it but cannot get it to look at the list

The list will not save as a Gedcom or Legacy file so I cannot open it as

a new file (The list is of unconnected individuals - at least not
directly)

Also on a related subject, when I display the list in Legacy to do a
manual analysis, there does not appear to be a way to mark the persons
as having been checked. I tried to tag them from the list but could not
do so.
This will mean I must open every individual and tag them in Family view
after doing the check, so as to know whom I have checked against the
records

Any suggestions folks?
Regards
Phil

Assuming you have entered all locations ending with country, go to the
Master Location List Set Sort order as Right to Left (this only affects
this list, not
Legacy reports or locations showing on Family View - because I don't
follow the US 4 field location but do enter locations consistently
from smallest unit to largest, my Master Location list is usually
sorted Right to Left as this brings together every location in the

Highlight all entries that now begin with Ireland

I presume you mean that there is the opportunity to add a lot more

features of Legacy, but you don't *need* to use every part of the Source
dialog box if you don't want to.

Have you discovered the wondered Source Clipboard? This saves you a
huge amount of typing, as you really only need to type in each Source

That is probably what I should be doing. I'm trying to keep the notebooks
as small as possible. I have large notebooks, but I've already gotten three
of them full. I followed the advice in the video and so I have lots of
other info included. I'm going to set up one just for my misc.
information. I am determined to get all of those stacks of folders off my
den floor. My wife has threatened to throw them out, and occasionally, my
dog, Gabby starts chewing on the folder corners. Sometimes I feel like like
the old saying my grandfather used to use when he had about all he could
take. He said he was, craving a bullet. Its not that bad. Actually I am
 making marked progress.

 Thanks for the reply,

 Jim

Changing Spouse to Parents doesn't make sense, and nor does

When I bring this couple up on my screen and I have not change

referred to each of them as being a Spouse of the other person

RE: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM import

2007-08-14 Thread ronald ferguson

Nancy,

Without knowing which type of Gedcom you sent it is difficult to know
whether the problem is at your end or your cousin's. I have sent GEDCOM 5.5
to several users of different programs, including FTM without problems. The
5.5 option is obtained by using the drop-down list in the box where it says
produce files for.

You can view your Gedcom in Notepad, as can your cousin, and if you compare
them and they are the same then the problem may lie with his/her FTM,
otherwise there has been a transmission problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] About dates

2007-08-14 Thread Pat H
What do you do about sourcing info-- let's say you have a source for the
location but not for the date. How do you indicate it's YOUR guesstimate
and that the source is silent on the matter (since Legacy groups date
location together as far as sources go for births, deaths, etc)?

From: Mitch Mackrory [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For example, once I have a child (any child) in a family, I assume it
is the eldest child and that the parents were likely married a year
prior to this. Let's say the child was born in 1856. I set the date
for the marriage as BEF 1855. I now have some information to do
further work on. I would record this with a Surety Level of 1
(marginal evidence). Let's assume that this helps me find the family
and I now figure out that there were two older children born in 1852
and 1855. I would now change the marriage date to BEF 1851 and I may
change my Surety Level to 2 (probable conclusion) if I am happy this
is the whole family. If this helps me narrow down when to look for
the marriage record, this is useful. Let's say I now find the index
record of the marriage record. I'll use UK terminology since that is
what I work on. I find an index record dated in the second quarter of
1850 and it looks good. I'll record this index info in the marriage
and likely change my marriage date to Jun Q 1850; possibly even
updating my Surety Level to 3 (Almost Certain Conclusion). When I get
a copy of the certificate, let's say there are witnesses that confirm
this is the right marriage. At that stage my marriage date changes to
14 Apr 1850 and my Surety Level might even go to 4 (Convincing
Evidence).

If I came across other evidence I may change my date to AFT or ABT,
but I always try to estimate a reasonable date as soon as I can and
then classify that assessment using the Surety Level system in Legacy.

Note that if my marriage date is BEF 1851 as an example, I will likely
start searching the marriage records from 1853 and work backwards for
20 plus years.

Also, once I have the marriage date fixed I move on to census records
(for example) to confirm that the decisions I have made are correct.

I hope that helps, Mitch Mackrory

I did use the 5.5 option from the drop down list as that is the only way I

what happens.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Question...

2007-08-14 Thread Pat H
I think it was on the laminated 4-page source citations by Mills that she
also put the name she had searched for in the documentation. I'm not sure
why that is necessary if you're including details as to page number, family
number, and if the name searched is the same as the name found.

And often I find people (e.g., other families) I wasn't even searching for
anyway.

Now *that's* a good reason. When reading films ordered from the Canadian
National Archives or the FHL I've often wondered if different copies of
the

same film could be better. From what I've seen so far, though, there's
nothing in Mills about recording the film copy number in the source
citation. Maybe that's something to consider. Of course, I'm only on p.
50
of 'Evidence Explained' and it's a big book so perhaps she's already
thought

of it.

Very interesting comment. Thanks.

Some years ago I ordered a census film from the FHL. The names on the
page I needed were obliterated. On another occassion, I was at the
Sacramento State Library where I looked at the same film. The page I
needed was beautiful and clear. I not only record the repository, but
also the line number, household number, and film details.

Re: [LegacyUG] About dates

2007-08-14 Thread Mitch Mackrory
Pat,

Good point and I should have included that as well. Here is a real example...

I have one Master Source as follows:
Source List Name: Estimated Dates
Author: Mitch Mackrory
Publication Facts: Not Published

When I use the single Master Source, I cite it and record as follows:

Details: Marriage Date 1870 estimated based on the birth date of his
son, Herbert Stephen Peacock (15 Dec 1872)
Surety Level: 0
Recorded Date: 27 Oct 2005:

Details: Marriage date 1859 estimated based on youngest child's birth
date (William Peacock 1860).
Surety Level: 1 (I now believe I have the whole family)
Recorded Date: 7 May 2006

I am still busy with this example. Note that I have two source
details (citations) for this one marriage date. The later one
supersedes the earlier one. I could have removed the first one, but I
tend to keep data until I reach a final conclusion. Even then I am
loath to erase data that is a history of the research I have
undertaken and the conclusions I reached along the way.

All my detailed notes are kept in a source detail or citation of the
single master source.

Does that make more sense now?

Cheers, Mitch

Re: [LegacyUG] About dates

2007-08-14 Thread Sharon Perdue

Example of sources for Birth Date/location
I use Master Sources with estimate wording such as:
MASTER SOURCE:
SOURCE LIST NAME
Births - Estimate - Marriage Courthouse Record
TYPE
Estimate/Assumption
TITLE
Calculation=subtract age at marriage from date of marriage

I would use this one (above) for my guess as to the birth date - in the
Source Detail/Detail Information I would put: estimated year.

Then I would have a second Master Source for the Courthouse Marriage Record,
where in the Source Detail/Detail Information I would put: city/county/state

Example of sources for name:
Many times I have a source (1) for a person's name that shows first, middle
initial and last name, with another source (2) having the full name. For
source 1, in the Source Detail/Detail Information I would put: first, middle
initial, last. For source 2, in the Source Detail/Detail Information I
would put: full name.

[LegacyUG] Child status menu is blank

2007-08-14 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova
When I rt click in children area of a family, then select Children setting
from the drop down menu I get the usual pop-up window.
If I then select the down arrow next to Relationship to Father, (or Mother
I get list of 11 possible selections starting with Adopted. OK so far.
If I select the down arrow next to Child status I get a blank list. If I
type in t in the box Legacy offers autocomplete triplet. If I type in
tw in the box Legacy offers autocomplete twin which if I accept, then
again click down arrow I again see a blank list but now containing several
lines plus a Tag column in which all blank selections are tagged. If I click
on Show list it shows me all the twins in my db.
Would appreciate if someone could verify if this is a new bug or something
wrong with my file.

RE: [LegacyUG] Titles

2007-08-14 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Jennifer,
You are right about my choice of words to describe a relationship between
two people who never married which resulted in the birth of a child.
I find that the wording options in the marriage screen refers to the two
people as a married couple in all the reports.
The best that I could come up with after trying different combinations of
words to describe the relationship between the two involved is as follows:

Change the Left label Husband to Father.
Change the Righr label Wife to Mother.
Change Married to had an affair with.
Change Spouse to Affair with.
Change Married to Affair.
Even using the above combinations, some reports will still referr to the
other person as a spouse.

This may not be suitable for some but it will work for me in my reports.
Leo

I always put in the Source Detail section exactly what the source said.
This is particularly helpful when you have conflicting data from two or more
different sources and also clearly shows cases where one source provides,
say, a date while another provides a location. (Provided, of course, that
the reader looks at the source notes.)

What do you do about sourcing info-- let's say you have a source for the
location but not for the date. How do you indicate it's YOUR guesstimate
and that the source is silent on the matter (since Legacy groups date
location together as far as sources go for births, deaths, etc)?

RE: [LegacyUG] Child status menu is blank

2007-08-14 Thread ronald ferguson

Richard,

This sounds like an error in your file. I cannot check it as I already have
twin in my list for child status but I have no blank lines and at present
none of the entries are tagged. If I highlight twins and click show list
then it correctly lists all the identified twins in my files and gives me
the options of tagging, untagging those on the list and untagging all
entries in my files.

If yours isn't working this way you could try File MaintenanceCheck Repair.

Re: [LegacyUG] Black Background on Web Pages

2007-08-14 Thread Lisa Young
Sorry, I didn't get home last night until 730pm and then I finally got
two Civil War pension files I was waiting for, which was too hard to resist.

In the page source code it says

body BGCOLOR=#10

Now, on some experimentation, if I choose colors that came with Legacy (
in the Color box that pops up, the ones with the longer color bars, like
the green or dark pink colors), the proper background color is
generated. Even some custom colors work, although selecting a similar,
but not the same, shade of tan, resulted in what appeared to be a black
background but source code that said body BGCOLOR=#0F

I'll report the glitch to support. Thank you for sorting it out.

Lisa

ronald ferguson wrote:
My apologies, Lisa, I was in a rush at the time I replied and missed
that bit of your reply.

Since that is the case and the colour information is not being
transferred from the setting you have made to the web page - you can
check that this is the case by looking at the body tag in the html -
whcih will contain BGCOLOR=#00 for a black backgound but something
else for tan (I cannot say what other hex number because I don't know
the exact shade).

Given that it does say #00 then I think you will need to uninstall
and reinstall Legacy to get it to woirk correctly as there is a fault in
the coding on your installation.

The way I would do this is make the event the Obituary and the
source the newspaper the In Memoriam notice came from, citing
In Memoriam notice, date and page/column number if known in
Details. In Source Text, you could copy the entire announcement.

This source could apply to other details mentioned in the
announcement - for example, death date, names of relatives etc.

Re: [LegacyUG] Basic Question

2007-08-14 Thread Debbie Freeman

Cathy Champion wrote:

Hi,

I'm new to Legacy and have a question pertaining to sources - mainly
duplicated ones.

I imported my GEDCOM to Legacy, and found that it duplicated all of my
sources, both Master sources and individual, so after searching for an
hour for an easy method of fixing it I just went ahead and did them all
manually (using the duplicate merge feature did not work in this case).

While doing that I also found that I had duplicate AKAs from the various
census records and decided to delete those also and just left one of
each AKA. Then a friend of mine said that this is wrong - that I should
leave them because you want to leave proof of what names were used most
consistently. She said I should have left the duplicate sources also,
because they may have been from other records.

I just can't see the sense of having Joe Blow aka Joe Blow, Joe Blow,
Joseph Blow, Joe Blow; nor the sense of printing a family report that
takes up one page with a list of sources three pages long with four
sources repeated numerous times. To me this looks unprofessional and
sloppy.

So...who is correct?

Thanks
Cathy Champion in Fenton, MO (St. Louis) --

Hello Cathy,

Please don't give up on Legacy.

Not all the computer programs work well with each other.

I hope this idea helps you. I will soon be in your shoes myself and plan
on trying this idea. [ ] are Elizabeth Shown Mills' suggestion.

You might want to try citing the name in the source detail box as it
appeared misspelled in the source (historically accurate). Then [correct
spelling].

In the note section you can write a short note to explain to future
generation if you wish.

This might solve your problem.

Source: New York - 1840 US Census
Source Detail: John Hoghtel [John Hooghteling]

Good Luck,

Hi Dee,
The way you posted it originally is the way I enter the data when there is
no town. , Bell County, Texas, USA is how I would enter your example.
As Leon Chapman notes, there is a comma place holder in front of the county
name to maintain the sort fields.

Make no apologies for our ancestors not always living in named villages,
towns and cities. It is what it is. Anyone who has delved into genealogy
knows there was not always a town. If they don't know that yet, feel free

RE: [LegacyUG] Cemetary and Headstone data in Legacy

2007-08-14 Thread Paul A.
If it is a picture of a headstone, I put in the picture gallery. Otherwise,
I put it in the burial notes. I don't know if that is the best way or not.

Does anyone maintain records about the cemetaries, churchs, and headstones
important to their family within Legacy? If so, how do you to this and how
do you link individuals?

thank you
harold

RE: [LegacyUG] County without city

2007-08-14 Thread Paul A.
That is still the way it had traditionally been. But, in the US you
normally don't use the word county or co. In many places, you could use
the township.

I am interested in a way to write this without Co. ,Bell Co is not
necessarily recognizable, and it makes it look like we haven't done our
research to get the name of the city when in fact there is no city.

 Any further comments?

 Thank you,

 Dee:

 I would enter it as:

 , Dell Co, TX, USA

Notice the , in front of Dell Co.

This maintains the four fields and will sort correctly.

 This
