Re: [LegacyUG] unknown surnames

2009-11-26 Thread Brian/Support
The Descendant Narrative also has the option to insert underlines for
missing names, dates and places. The Family Group Sheet has a variation
on this. It will insert a small name, date, place for missing
information. These are positioned in the top left of the box where the
information should be inserted.

I use a different approach entirely because I like how it looks in the
reports that I do for my clients and for myself.

I use 10 underlines in a row for a name. In using this to send reports
to family members, I find they fill in the blanks easier and faster than
seeing 'Unknown in the wording.

for example

last name unknown - Sarah __
first name unknown - __ Smith

both names unknown - __ __

Kay,

The .trn file for French should use calc.. That is what is in my
version 109 file. When I switched from English (Canada) to French the
FGS did use calc. in the report. Switching back to English changed the
wording to Cal which used by all the English versions.

Check the dates for the .trn files in your Legacy program folder. My
date modified for the .trn files are 21 Aug 2009 for the Swedish and
Spanish files and 13 Aug 2009 for all the other.trn files.

Thanks, using the reset button appears to work. However, I now see
another problem. After resetting to English, I changed the language on a
FGS to French. The screen shows ber 10 August 1937. Ber is an
abbreviation for the German word for calculated. - berechnet. The
French word for calculated is calculé, so it should say cal, right?
This is as far as I went with the experiement.

Kay,

The .trn files which are used for translating chart reports were fixed
in August so they are included in the newest version. What you may be
seeing however is a problem with the report.usr files. If you have the
ber problem after changing languages use the reset button on the

that Ancestry.com is the leading on-line database, something that Millennia

wonder if the very old versions of Legacy had this link before Ancestry

Paul,

Legacy has a compare files for duplicates. Tools Compare files for
duplicates.
During the compare you can tag the individuals in both files that are
duplicates.
After going through that process you can open the second file and use
search to find all the individuals where that tag does NOT apply.
That should give you a list of those in the second file who are not

Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging people question

2009-10-27 Thread Brian/Support

Mike,

There is a problem report in our system about the Index view and the
delayed update. It will work correctly if you turn off the options to
include AKAs and Married Names. Having AKAs and Married names in the
index is what causes the delayed update issue.

No, that's the way the forward and back arrows on the main toolbar under
the menubar, have always worked. To move through a set of tagged
individuals (or tagged marriages), you use the left and right arrows
(one pair for each of individuals and marriages) at the bottom of the
screen.

Note: whilst not being able to replicate your tagged/untagged problem, I
can report something of a similar, unexpected nature in the operation of
the Index tab. If you add individuals and marriages to the database
using the Family tab, then the Index tab doesn't update with the new
entries until you choose a different sort sequence.

You can import any of the Master Lists from one file to another.
Go to View Master Lists Location
Click on the options button and select import
If you have difficulty or questions at any stage press F1 or use the

Once you have your cleaned up locations in the file you can use the
combine option to combine the badly formatted locations with the good
ones from the imported list.

The time it takes to upload depends more on the speed of your connection

Re: [LegacyUG] a new way to wreck your database

2009-08-17 Thread Brian/Support

Jim,

I was entering a problem report on this since I think Legacy should have
given you some warning that selecting a new location from the GEO Data
Base would change all the locations that used that place.

As I was going through your steps I found that there is an intermediate
screen between the GEO Database Selection and the return to the
individual edit screen. That intermediate screen is titled Merge
Location and has the original location from the Master Location List
and the new location from the Geo DB. It is the Save button on that
screen that changes your Master Location List name from the original to
the newly selected name and does not warn that all uses of the Master
List name will be changed.

I have submitted a problem report with the suggestion that the user
needs to be warned or that there should be an option on the Merge
Location screen to ADD the selected location as a new Master Location.

So, I merrily went to the birth location field where the state was showing
and figuring I'd kill several birds with one stone (obtain the county name
and get the latitude and Longitude), clicked on the Geo location icon,
taking me to the Geo Location Database where I found that the state was
already filled in.
I simply filled in the name of the town, Acorn Ridge, and clicked search
and

there I had all the desired info. I clicked the Select on the Core +

and then Save. This brought me back to GGrandmother's Individual
information

screen, with town, county, state, country, Lat. Longitude, completely
filled in. I clicked Save and went happily on my way.
NOW, six weeks and many backups later, I find that the way I changed the

Missouri, USA, resulted in changing ALL instances of Missouri to Acorn
Ridge, Stoddard
All 123 cases in my 27 June backup, where a location of only Missouri was
used, now show Acorn Ridgeetc. A few of these are correct but most are
not. In addition, subsequent research has revealed a few other ancestors
with event locations of Acorn Ridge, Illinois. So, it's now necessary
that I go through the entire list of everybody using that location as of
now and change most of them back to Missouri only.
I don't have a question in regards to fixing my Master Location list, I
just

want to warn others about this potential problem of inadvertently changing
all instances of an existing location, when you intend to change only one.
This is probably a horse on me, but it seems like there should have
been a warning from the program that changing this location will change
it for everybody using this location.
Oh well, just goes to show that it's pretty difficult to make anything
bullet proof ;-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding DOCUMENTS to an individuals record

2009-08-17 Thread Brian/Support
You must first have a program installed on your computer that will open
those kinds of files. For PDF files for example you need to have Adobe
Reader or another program that will open a PDF file installed.

I tested Legacy for PDF files, Text files, jpg, tif and gif image files,
mp3 sound files and an Open Office document file. All opened because I
have software installed on my computer that will use those file types.
Text files opened with Notepad, PDF with Acrobat Reader, MP3 with
Windows Media Player, The Open Office document opened with Open Office
and the Gif, TIF and JPG files opened with Irfanview, a program which
can open many types of image files.

JPG files, some .RTF others .TIF files some are .DOC files. I copied a handful
of them to a seperate folder for testing purposes. I directed Legacy (in the
LOCATIONS tab for DOCUMENT FILES) to this path. I then tried to attach these
documents to the individuals. They attach, but the only ones I can click
display/open to view for the individual after the attaching are those with the
.DOC format. Any of the other file extension types do nothing.

According to the documentation for this feature These documents can be word
processing files, PDF files, spreadsheets, web pages - whatever you like. Just as with
sound and video files, these other documents cannot be included on reports, but you can
load and view them as you would any other file. Double-clicking on a word processor
document starts your word processor and displays the file. The same happens for any
other type of file. Whatever program is associated with that file type will be loaded to
display the file.

So why is it I can only open/view the .DOC files??

Is there a way to fix this short of search/replace in the entire gedcom? This looks to me like a bug that should be reported?

Pat,

1. The file is still a proper GEDCOM file and has the .ged extension so
you do not need to worry that your computer says it is a FTW GEDCOM file.

2. As others have said FTM associates the .ged file extension with
itself when it is first installed and every time you run the program it
will re-associate the .ged extension with itself.

I know this topic has been discussed several

before, in one manner or another, but I can't come

up with

the proper search terms to find what I need in

the

Archives.

Yesterday, I attempted to link two individuals

who

were already in my database as father and

daughter. The

father was in my database as a totally unlinked

person (no

parents, no children, no siblings, no spouse). The

daughter

was an end-of-the-line ancestor with many

descendants.

As best as I can remember the sequence I used,

I first

added a new, named wife to the father, then

attempted to

link them to the daughter. But I might have

started with

trying to link him to the daughter before entering

a wife's

name. In any event, it took several minutes of

errors

stating things like She is already linked to

these parents

(which she most certainly was not), or, she

already has

parents, do you want to link to another set of

parents?

before I discovered there was a phantom unknown

spouse for

the father. I then thought it should be a simple

matter of

unlinking the daughter from this phantom marriage,

deleting

the unknown spouse/marriage, and relinking to the

proper

named parents, but that didn't work either without

several

tries. In one case, the unknown spouse was

deleted and

magically reappeared again.

What is causing these Unknown spouses to

appear? Is

there any way to prevent it? In checking my

Marriage List, I

see I not only have several phantom spouses, I

have some

Unknown to Unknown parents of some end-of-the line

ancestors

that I certainly never added.

This seems to have started in a relatively

recent

version (maybe from 6.0 to 7.0?) Is this not a

bug?

(It is certainly annoying).

In addition to the tagged individuals suggested by Jenny the Record
Selection screen also has an option to use a focus group. Select that

One word of warning. If there are multiple entries in a focus group then
everyone who belongs to any of the entries will be part of the focus

Re: [LegacyUG] PDF Pedigree Reports

2009-07-10 Thread Brian/Support

Anne,

It is possible that you are related more than once to the people who are
number 1 on pages 10 and 11. Check the pages where pages 10 and 11 say
No. 1 on this chart is the same as no. x on page y. If those people are
the same person but they are linked to different people in the previous
generation (ie children of the person are different) you have a
duplicate line.

In my own family tree there are several cases where cousins married.
This creates a duplicate line for the grandparents of those cousins and
earlier generations of those grandparents.

You can prevent this kind of duplicate line from being repeated in the
reports. On the Report Options select the Format tab and click on Don't
repeat duplicate lines.

Re: [LegacyUG] Location Names and Addresses--mapping

2009-06-25 Thread Brian/Support

Paula,

The new mapping function uses the Microsoft Virtual Earth Web-based
mapping application. It is not related to the Geo Location Database.

There are two ways to use mapping.

a. For your Master location List you can view a map of the location (and
a list of the people who use each location) by going to View Master
Lists Locations.

b. When you have selected a person in the Index, Family, Descendant or
pedigree views if you click on the mapping icon in the top tool bar you
can generate a map with all the locations related to that person marked.

The help file and the built in help are a good resource.

I can also add the cemetery's phone number, GPS

Were those two misplaced endnotes for sources to an individual's notes?
We have a problem report recorded in our tracking system for an error

If they were not for an individual's notes please send a private Email

A recent descendant report had a last page with ten full source

Chaos. I did NOT want any end notes, and don't know how to stop them

Re: [LegacyUG] Alias question

2009-06-18 Thread Brian/Support

Marie,

Go to Search Find detailed Search
The Alt given Names and Alt Surnames are fields you can search on.
To find everyone you may need to run the search twice.
The first time look for Alt Given Name, Not Equal to leave the what to
look for empty
Set the Clear list before this search option in the area just above the
buttons.

Click Create List
That will find everyone where you have entered a given name in the AKA
Run the search again but this time Search for Alt Surname, Not Equal to,
Change the option in the bottom to Add results to existing list then
click on create list.

Now you should have everyone with either an alt given or alt surname.

In fact, I think there's a desperate need to make a distinction between
'real' AKAs and what should really be classed as transcription errors
that give rise to a multitude of alternate spellings.

Since the program comes with the series of 'Alt. ...' Event Types,
what's wrong with creating an Event Type of 'Alt. Spelling' or something
similar? This would alleviate reams of the 'Another name for...' notes
and also allow you to source the alternative/wrong spelling.

Aliases should really be left for alternate, official surnames.

I entirely agree with your last sentence; I hate the idea of putting a
whole list of transcription errors and spelling variations in the AKA
field. It would make pretty boring reading in a report and not be
accurate anyway (someone was not also known as ... just because a Census
enumerator mis-read a name. Also, it would be difficult to distinguish
the real AKAs from the transcription errors, variations in spelling etc.

However, I see no desparate need for a distinction, either. Whenever I
come across errors and alternate spellings they are recorded in the Event
Description and/or the Source Citation.

Did you use Single or Double Quotes for those names. Double Quotes

2009-06-03 Thread Brian/Support

Ruth,

The problems with the Indexing of AKA's as well as the missing Children
of ... sentences are documented in our problem reporting system. Note:
The Wording 1 tab also includes the preamble for Events for the person
and the marriage. Those are also missing in RTF reports and might
explain why there is no line between the main data and the list of events.

I was not able to confirm the problem with no blank line between the
main data and general notes. When I tested the report there was a blank
line for those people who had general notes.

Use that setup program to install Legacy

1. Make a backup of your family file and multimedia files by going to

2. Save those two backup files to your old computer hard drive or, if
the two computers are on a home network, you might be able to save them
on the hard drive of the new computer.
3. If the computers are not on a network copy the two backup files to a
CD and use that to copy the files to your new computer's hard drive.
4. Use Windows compressed files and folders utility to extract the
pictures from the multimedia backup file. Be sure to specify C:\ as the

5. Open Legacy on the new computer and use File Restore family file to

Re: [LegacyUG] Potential Problems Report Problem

2009-06-02 Thread Brian/Support
The All Caps surnames is really an obsolete standard if you are using a
computer to record your genealogy. It dates from the days of typewriters
and hand written records. The current practise is to enter your surnames
in mixed case. It is easy for the computer to display those mixed case
surnames in All Caps on your screens and to print them in all caps in
reports.

Version 7.0 added a new problem check for Standardization Tips The all

Re: [LegacyUG] Question on merging two files

2009-06-02 Thread Brian/Support
When you merge two records in Legacy the sources from both records are
included with the resulting person. From what you say you may need to
review all the sources attached to your records after you have imported
and merged to eliminate the sources you entered and leave only the
Ancestry sources you prefer to keep.

Yes, you MUST have the record you want to keep on the left when doing a
merge. The person on the right will disappear from your file.

When importing the records from the Ancestry file I suggest you have the
RINs and MRINs from the Ancestry file start at some large number that
will make it clear to you which file they came from. For example if you
have 1000 people and 350 marriages in your file have the RINS start at
5000 in the Ancestry file and the MRINs start at 1000. Since the RIN for
the two people is shown on the merge screen you can make sure that your
original person is the one on the left using the swap left and right button.

At the same time, I tried to enter them into my Legacy file here on my laptop. Now what I find is that Ancestry has done a much better job of filling out the source information than I have done and would like to take advantage of that by downloading my family file and merging it with my Legacy file. My aim would be to get the source information to move over. My Legacy file is the one where I have written all my family and research notes so I don't want to lose them by going the other way.

Question: Those with more experience at this, would it be better for me to do it in the reverse and just do a side by side to move all my notes to the Ancestry file after I import it back into a new Legacy file ?

Question: If I merge ancestry into my legacy file..If I have a birthdate in my legacy file that is the same as the birthdate on the ancestry file, but the ancestry file has more sources for it, how do I get the ancestry info to come over. Do I just pretend they are different and I want the ancestry date to replace what I have, thus bringing over all the sources. What would happen to any source that I had for my legacy date, would it disappear ?

Question: Do I always want my to keep file on the left of the screen, or is that where it automatically goes ?

Hope I have not muddled this up so no one can understand me. Thanks for any help.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Group Sheet Error - Calculated Date Terminology

2009-04-28 Thread Brian/Support

Kay,

Problem confirmed. There is an error in the .trn files which control the
chart type reports wording. I have submitted a problem report on the
issue. You will only see the error if you change the report language. So
long as you were using the default language you used to install Legacy
the term is correct. Once you change language however the error in the
.trn file changes Legacy's term for Calculated from Cal to Ber in all
the future chart style reports you create.

Kay Fordham wrote:

Using 7.0.0.90
Build Date of: 13 March 2009

When I use the calendar feature to calculate a date (in this case
birth), it shows properly as cal 3 April 1849 in the Family View;
however, in the print preview and printed copy it shows up as ber 3
April 1849. No problem with the others; i.e., bef, abt, aft. Can anyone
else duplicate this anomaly?

Thanks, Kay Fordham

One is for country codes, one for states and one for counties.
The preamble to each file explains how the entries work.

Re: [LegacyUG] Include Legacy Charting charts in Publishing Center

2009-04-28 Thread Brian/Support
You can use the place holder in the Publishing Center to reserve pages
for the Fan chart produced by Legacy Charting. After you print the book
you replace the blank pages in the Legacy report with the Legacy
Charting pages of the Fan Chart.

Simply use the Place Holder each time you want to insert a Fan Chart.
You will have to produce the Fan Charts first so you know how many pages
to reserve for each one.

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplicate Marriages

Laura

There is no automatic merge for the duplicate marriages but you can
search for people in your file with multiple spouses.

Go to Search Find . Miscellaneous Searches
Select the Individuals with multiple spouses
Make sure the clear list before this search is selected then click on
the create list button
On the search results screen if you select the family tab it will show
the spouses and children
Select one of the duplicate spouse names and you will see a button for
the husband list or wife list.
Click on the appropriate button and then use the unlink button to unlink
the incorrect spouse from the person.

As Dennis said, the Multiple Lines of Descent report may be workable for
you.

You could start with a Pedigree Report that shows the ancestors. And
based for each top level ancestor marriage, you can lookup the MRIN
value. And then list these MRINS on the Report Options page for the
Multiple Lines of Descent report. This can easily become a
multi-hundred page report. So adjust the report options to include only
what you need - e.g.. don't include events, notes, etc.

Re: [LegacyUG] List of Living Decedents

2009-03-22 Thread Brian/Support

Larry,

You will have to do it in two stages and it will NOT be sorted by birth
date. You can however export the list to a csv (comma separated values)
text file and import that into a spreadsheet program to sort it.

1. Create a focus group for the descendants of the person. Select
him/her first.

Go to Search Find Miscellaneous Tab
Select the focus group then Click on the the View Select Focus Group button.
Clear any existing entries.
Click on Add individual and Descendants
The person you selected will be the one in the name box. If you did not
go to him/her earlier use the Change Button to change the starting person.
Select the Descendants Option, the Entire Descendant line will give you
too many people.

Click OK then OK again to close the focus group
Make sure the option to clear list before this search is selected and
click Create List

When the list is created you have finished step 1.

2. In the search results screen click on the search button and select find.
This time select the Detailed Search tab
Primary Condition, Look for=Individual, Where=Living, How=Equal to What=YES
This time select the option in the bottom to only search the search list.
Click Create List
Only the living descendants will now be in your list.

To create the .csv file Click on Print
you can select up to three Rows of data to be included for each person
(In the .csv file this will be all on one line). To specify the data
click on the customize button for Row 1. You can have up to 8 custom
pieces of data there. Then on Row 2 and Row 3 you can add more if needed.
Make sure there is a check mark in the box beside each item you want to
include.
When you have the Rows set up Select the CSV file in the lower left then
click the Create Button that will replace the Print button.

Assign a file name and click Save
The file will be created.

WARNING: When I loaded the file I created into MS Excel and had it
format the birth dates as dates the people who I only had a birth year
for had incorrect dates. Legacy exported the birth as 1979 for example.
In MS Excel dates are counted from 1 Jan 1900 so 1979 was interpreted as
a date in 1905.
If the birth was missing a year eg. 16 Oct Excel assumed the date was
the current year so it became 16 Oct 2009.

Re: [LegacyUG] newbie question - master source list

2009-03-14 Thread Brian/Support

Jerri,

The source clipboard is a tool that will let you add that same detail to
all the family members listed on that census. If you set up the
clipboard first with the census details and text you can then use the
paste from clipboard icon to add that source for other members of the
family with a single click.

Re: Using Family Names etc in the text of the source. If you enter it
there the data will only appear in the source citations of any reports
you create. The alternative is to create an event for each person.
Legacy has the built-in Census event. If you enter the details of the
family in the Event Notes they will appear in the body of your reports
when you include events.

NOTE: Legacy also has an Event Clipboard so you can create the event for
the first family member then copy it to the Event Clipboard when you add
that event to the other members of the family you can use the Event
Clipboard to paste in the event details with one click. In fact if you
set up the event with the source attached before you copy it to the
Event clipboard both the event and the source citation will be pasted to
each family member.

It is up to you which method you use for entering family details,
personally I like the fact that Events are in the body of the report and
the family details are included with the Event so that is what I use for
my census entries.

window, I get the message This project already contains web pages. Would
you like to delete all files from c:\program files\legacy\web\family
history\? I click on yes. I then get the message generating web pages
for individuals. followed by web page creation is complete. I am then
asked, Would you like to see web pages in your browser? I click yes.
When I view the pages on the browser, there is no instance of the name I
removed.

I close out Legacy and go to my web page. There, I click on the Legacy
link. The name I removed is gone from the list of names. However, to my
dismay, the name appears when I go to the person's father. His brother,
whom I did not delete, and he, whom I did delete, appear in the father's
family links box. When I click on the deleted name, I get his page with
his information.

When I open Legacy from my desktop and check, again, there is no instance of
the deleted name. It's frustrating, especially because I cannot go back and
redo the removal process -- the name does not appear in Legacy. Except, of
course, when accessed from the website.

In addition, I have manually uploaded (FTP) the legacy index file and the
above noted family history file. All to no avail.

I reinstalled Legacy Deluxe 5.0, but that didn't help either.

I hope you or another can help me solve this problem. I have no idea why
the person wants his name removed (it shows only his parents, brother, and
birth year), but he does; and I want to honor his request.

Subject: [LegacyUG] removing a name from legacy

I have tried to remove a person's name from my family tree information.

After I go through all the steps, the name in the legacy program has been
removed from all instances. Then I create a web page. Then, when I use
the browser button in the task bar, the browser display shows no
instance
of the name I deleted. However, when I open my website, in which I have a
link to Legacy, the Legacy program does not show the name EXCEPT when I
go
to the person's father's name, the name of the deleted person appears as a
son. The person whose name appears has asked me to remove it from Legacy
and
my website. I don't know why, but there it is.
I reinstalled Legacy Deluxe 5.0 (which I use), but the problem persists.

Does anyone know what might be the answer to this problem? I'd appreciate
any help I can get.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source citation superscript in Events - Sentence override

2009-02-17 Thread Brian/Support

Marianne,

The Sentence override allows you to define a sentence but it is limited
to 255 characters.

Your sentence definition in that override should use the replaceable
text fields to select the information you have entered for the event
instead of trying to write out everything in the sentence override.

One of those replaceable text fields is [sources]. That field will be
replaced in the report sentence with the superscript number(s) for the
sources linked to that event. Other fields will add the date, name of
the person (or couple for marriage events), the event description,
place, notes etc.

If you have difficulty or questions at any stage press F1 or use the

I did test that and using advanced tagging, from the search list, will
apply the tags 4-9 for any of the buttons. If the tags are not showing
in the Name List, search list and on the Family View you cannot tag them
there. On the Individual's edit screen all 9 tags show and can be tagged
there as well.

For Angela, If you click on the Customize button you can select all the

Re: [LegacyUG] Abbreviation/Symbol Definition - +

2009-02-09 Thread Brian/Support
I set up a test file to check this. Here is what I found. Rose has the +
sign because her relationships are calculated as:

1. 1st cousin 3 times removed
2. wife of 1st cousin 3 times removed (this is a relationship by
marriage not blood)

John only has the relationship
1. 1st cousin 3 times removed

The relationship that is not counted is the relationship by marriage as
the husband of a 1st cousin 3 times removed. Since that is not counted
John does not have multiple relationships.

I made all the relationships to your ggg grandfather on the paternal

Re: [LegacyUG] RE: Jim's Aha Moment to the + Symbol... Thanks

2009-02-09 Thread Brian/Support

Jim,

Yes it is that simple. The + sign beside a relationship in that area
above a person's name means there is more than one. If you right click
on someone with a + sign you will see the option to view additional
relationships for THAT person. The reason you did not see that choice
with John is that he does not have multiple relationships. In his case
the option is Open Relationship Calculator.

The + sign on children and parents names in family view means there is
at least one more generation above (parent) or below (child).

Jim Smith wrote:

Thanks, Brian, JL, Ange, Dede, and Jenny,

Do you mean the + sign that indicates there's more than one relationship?

I had to plot it out. I said I was a bit dense at times...

John's father, Joe, is Rose's mother, Louisa's, brother. Hence, Joe's and
Louisa's parents are John's and Rose's grandparents. I reset the
relationships to begin with John and the relationship labeling appeared as
follows:

John = Self
Rose, his wife = 1st cousin +
Joe, their son = Son +

Levine, John's father-in-law = Father-in-law +
Louisa, John's mother-in-law = Aunt +

And then I think this may be the simple answer. In the case of the
relationship between John and Rose, she is his 1st cousin PLUS she is his
wife. In the case of relationship with Louisa, she is John's aunt, PLUS she
is his mother-in-law.

If this is what the + symbol means in the relationship labeling,
Hallelujah!!!

So when I reset the relationships to myself as the primary individual -

John = my 1st cousin 3 times removed
Rose = my 1st cousin 3 times removed PLUS, +, the wife of my 1st cousin 3
times removed.

I hope this is as simple as the developers of Legacy meant this relationship
label + symbol to mean... or I'm screwed!!!

The issue is clear, and the + symbols in the relationship, as well as when
used with other types of views has a different there is more meaning,
so-to-speak.

Thanks, for taking the time,

Jim

From the previously mentioned thread I hmade a folder on my old
system that contains just the .usr file settings. This folder was
copied to my new system. I know the .usr files in this folder need
to be put into the Legacy folder on the new computer. I thought
there was one FOLDER within the Legacy installation location that
contained just the .usr files. However this doesn't seem to be the
case.

I need confirmation, that before actually doing it, I need to: (1)
delete all .usr files from the root directory of Legacy on the new
system; (2)then copy all the saved .usr files from the old system to
the root directory on the new system. Doing so should then have
Legacy on the new computer looking like I had it on the old system?

Thanks

Gary (gc)

Isobelle,

Yes there is a way to print out a list of all your multimedia files.
Go to View Scrapbook
Select the type of multimedia files you want to include and click on
Print Multimedia List
A second options screen will open where you can elect to include such
things as where the file is linked, captions, dates etc.

Click Preview to view the list or select a text or PDF file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging Basic Sources into Sourcewriter

2009-01-06 Thread Brian/Support

Lew,

When I tested this and reported the problem with merging basic sources
into sourcewriter sources I found that the detail entries from the old
style source were lost.

The Basic source details were not copied to the sourcewriter template
fields. Initially when you look at the source in the source list the old
details are shown but if you click on edit details you will find that
those entries are missing from the sourcewriter details screen. If you
then save instead of cancel the only entries that will remain are those
hard coded into the template (such as the microfilm series number for
census records).

The programmer elected to prevent merging of old and new style sources
in response to that problem report.

Re: [LegacyUG] Someone

2009-01-04 Thread Brian/Support

Jack and Kirsten,

I should have said in my original answer that initially I was NOT able
to duplicate the problem.

My Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to use the Save/Close Button on
any screen in Legacy. When I first tested the problem I automatically
used Save on the marriage information screen so the Wording Tab change
made by Legacy from married someone (Unknown spouse) to married
(known spouse) was saved and the reports read X married Y.

Legacy was, therefore trying to sort out the wording based on my
addition of a spouse when the marriage screen was presented. My use of
the Cancel button told Legacy not to make the change to the Wording Tab
it was proposing. I did say that I had not reviewed the Wording Tab, if
I had looked at that tab I would have seen that the wording was going to
be changed to married instead of married someone.

That was the reason why I asked the $64 question.

I'd suggest that because of your action at 7 below that the effect is a
bug. You had the info correct already and so were OK in doing a cancel from
the marriage screen. The wording options should sort themselves out (unless
you had overridden them). I don't think it should matter really if you
- add spouse
- add marriage details

Or
- add marriage details

- add spouse

I've sometimes had to do the second method when I've been told the
date/place of a person's marriage and then had to go back to my source to
get the spouse' name

Kirsten,

I was able to duplicate this but only when I did the following:

1. I created an ancestor X
2. I added a marriage date and place but no spouse.
3. The Marriage wording tab of the marriage screen then used the default
setting X married someone for an unknown spouse.
4. I ran an ancestor report and the X married someone wording was used
with no name.

5. I closed the report
6. I added the missing spouse Y
7. When the marriage screen appeared I clicked the cancel button instead
of save since the date and place were OK. I did not examine the Wording
Tab. If I had looked at the wording tab I would have seen that the
wording was now married.
8. Because I cancelled the change to the marriage information the
married someone wording was kept on the wording tab.

9. When I ran the ancestor report the wording was X married someone Y.
10. After I edited the marriage and saved it without making any changes
to the date/place the marriage wording tab was changed to married and
the ancestor report wording became X married Y.

Now for the 64$ question. Is that a BUG or user error?

Re: [LegacyUG] Date format question

2009-01-03 Thread Brian/Support

Ron,

Not all date fields in the SourceWriter templates use the date
validation and formatting routines used to convert dates to the Date
Options Format. Some will accept whatever you enter. You can tell, when
you leave the field if the date options are implemented, If the date
options/validation are used then the date in the field will immediately
change to the Date format you have defined in Options. If the date does
not change format it is one of those date fields which accept the user's
input as is.

Re: [LegacyUG] need help getting rid of duplicates

2009-01-01 Thread Brian/Support

LouAnn,

Legacy has some searches that will help you with this problem. What you
are seeing are multiple links between some people either as children of
the same couple or as multiple marriages between the same people.

Go To Search Find Miscellaneous Searches
There you can search for people with multiple spouses and for children
with multiple parents. Use the search for multiple spouses first.

For those who have multiple spouses who are the same person you can fix
the problem from the search list. In the right side select the family
tab. You will see the list of spouses and children as well as their
parents and siblings.
Examine the lists to see if any full families are duplicated. ie. the
spouse and all children are the same.
Select one of the duplicate spouses then click the Spouse list button
below the family list.
Select one of the duplicate spouses and use the UNLINK button. That will
remove that duplicate link.

NOTE:
The children will still be linked to that person and he/she will now
have an unknown spouse so you will have to repeat the unlinking step
to remove the unknown spouse and make a final break with the children.
