Hi Cathy -- OK I'll pursue that the folder issue and, if that doesn't work,
I guess I'll haul the computer to see if that's the problem. Thanks!

Lucy,

You need a computer tech to help you re-establish your Documents folder
properly if you can't do it yourself.
It sounds as if you originally moved it properly but didn't handle it
properly when your external drive with it on died.

I've had recurring problems with both Legacy 8 and now Legacy 9 on my

Documents file to an external drive. That worked well until that
external drive died. I was getting a "system failed" message until I

an issue with Legacy freezing or causing other apps to freeze when open.

Once I learned that Legacy 9 was on the way, I thought I'd simply wait

Re: [LegacyUG] Cloud Backup

2017-04-24 Thread Cathy Pinner

There are currently problems with the Cloud backup so leave it for a while.

It only intends to backup your data.

It only saves one backup copy per file. It's an "extra" backup and
should never be your only backup.

You use the backup by going to File - File Restore in Legacy and
choosing the Cloud option.

Open someone's Individual's Information screen (this is where you
actually

add data to someone)

Click the FamilySearch ID LABEL. If the person does not have an FSID
number
already in the field, you will get FamilySearch's record search
results
page. If they do have an FSID entered you will go directly to their
Family

Tree page. I LOVE THIS!

Now click the Find a Grave ID LABEL. If the person does not have a FaG

Disregard my post entirely Cathy, just call my original post a total

Moderator would be a bit touchy I reckon. Dunno what came over me to
be thinking so outside the square, when I've been with Legacy for s
long, and I should've taken a break and made a cuppa. As it is, I'm red
faced enough, so I've gone off to serve some penance, and will print
out the new manual and sit down for a read.

Thank you though for one of your very familiar helpful posts Cathy.

Re: [LegacyUG] mapping locations

2017-04-24 Thread Ian Thomas
Legacy Mapping troubles me.
Though a big Microsoft fan, I do find that Google has better world coverage
(Google Maps vs Bing Maps) and sometimes better accuracy. Both have some
errors, in my experience (outside of my use of Legacy FT).
I can't blame either for not recognizing some of the places from centuries ago
for which the present usage is irrelevant.
Also, omission of suburbs / some locations in Samoa which I thought these
USA-based organizations would cover well is not unexpected, realistically. They
are small and numerous, with variable spelling.
Using the Legacy Mapping, I resort to researching the exact location of
troublesome places (by internet, usually), then comparing a map of my preferred
location with the Legacy map, and right-clicking to fix its location in the
programme.
I find the digital method to enter the latitude/longitude in Legacy Mapping to
be very awkward.
There are gazetteers that give accurately the lat/long of places, and it would
be nice to be able to use those accurate positionings in a friendly way. I have
some suggestions - perhaps best expressed directly to Millennium.

It varies. Sometimes Google is not spot on - search for a church, and it's
somewhere in the area, but not the church - even using exact coordinates!

The same problem occurs sometimes with Bing.

Genuki is unparallelled for old maps of Britain. You can get the town and zero
in on the castle ruins, church, etc., and get the coordinates. Those have
always been correct when I search Google or Bing for those exact coordinates.

It is always wise to use at least two map searches to verify, AND, click on the
exact location to see the coordinates. Then do a separate search for those
exact coordinates. I have found many errors that way.

I hadn't tried it before. I did spend many days cleaning up the master place
list earlier this year so I know they are correct.

I have noticed this issue in the past when programs use Bing. If I search for
the place in Google they come up correctly.

In the Master Location list with maps on, have you asked Legacy to auto
map/geocode your locations? If you do that, you need to check them.

In the Master Location list, there is a button near the top of the screen -
with "Geo-Code" written on it.
Click that and there are a number of options which include Geo code the current
location again (meaning the highlighted location)
That may give you a better mapping.
Or simply go to the right place on the map and then right click on the map to
reset the pin.

Bing maps, which Legacy links to, are pretty good at finding places but I don't
know about US locations. The normal problems I have is for historic locations
where the name has changed. Otherwise, it does a pretty good job of my
Australian and UK locations.

Once you've verified the relevant locations, go back to Map My Family.

I'm not looking for these places. I know where they are. ;) That's how I
know how wrong the maps are.

Google is not perfect but, in my searches, it has been about spot on every
time. The mapping feature of Legacy is not critical to me but if it was I
would be unhappy.

[LegacyUG] Register for Webinar Wednesday - Finding and Using Land Ownership Maps by Rick Sayre, CG, CGL, FUGA

2017-04-24 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Land ownership maps in this country are generally focused on the county
level. Produced largely in the nineteenth-century in single sheet or atlas
format, they were sold by subscription and also developed to commemorate
events such as the centennial of the American Revolution. Though advances
in printing such as lithography increased availability, maps were still
expensive. Consequently, they likely will be found in more affluent areas.
Property owners can also be found on military maps and other government
published maps. Land ownership and residence can often be determined by
correlating city directories with fire insurance maps.

TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - Another Easter Egg feature

Open someone's Individual's Information screen (this is where you actually
add data to someone)

Click the FamilySearch ID LABEL. If the person does not have an FSID number
already in the field, you will get FamilySearch's record search results
page. If they do have an FSID entered you will go directly to their Family
Tree page. I LOVE THIS!

Now click the Find a Grave ID LABEL. If the person does not have a FaG
memorial number already entered, you will get the FaG search results page.
If the person does have a FaG memorial number entered, you will get their
FaG memorial page.

Re: [LegacyUG] mapping locations

2017-04-24 Thread Cheryl Rothwell
I hadn't tried it before. I did spend many days cleaning up the master
place list earlier this year so I know they are correct.

I have noticed this issue in the past when programs use Bing. If I search
for the place in Google they come up correctly.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Writer for UK Baptisms

2017-04-24 Thread Ian Thomas

I can guess at why Millennium doesn’t “publish” on-disk templates for
SourceWriter: I think their rules-based code is within some password-protected
mdb files (disguised as .dbm). or at least that is the way that I would code it.
Also, whether the above is right or wrong – if the formatting of sources is so
divergent between times in history and jurisdictions (as for example, the
dogs’-breakfast of even the online BDM databases in the 7 or so States of
Australia, over the less than 200 years of record-keeping) it would be a big
task for them to research and implement the rules for sources for additional to
those in the USA.

(just my conjectures)

Thanks for the tip. I don’t want to accumulate sources stored in ways that make
retrieval or maintenance a big chore, or inflexible.

It's a slow tedious job which is only worth doing if the source isn't

Making your own guides to how you enter Basic Sources is a great idea.

But you can create your own source templates using the basic system.

I have a set that works well for New Zealand, Australian, UK records.

Developed as the source writer system is way to US centric (long

Or – does anyone know whether Legacy’s SourceWriter Templates

having a different Master Source for every church. If I
understand your two examples correctly you have some Master

Rather than have a mix I think I will start off my baptism

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 default install directory naming structure

2017-04-24 Thread Cathy Pinner

David,

Are you talking about your data or the installation of the Program and
the Settings file?

Legacy 8 installed by default to Program Files (x86)\Legacy8\
Legacy 9 installs by default to Program Files (x86)\Legacy9\ and removes
the Legacy8 program folder.

You may have chosen to install Legacy 8 somewhere else but wherever it
was installed, it used
...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\ folder for your settings and
Legacy 9 uses this same folder.
If you move or rename any part of \Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\ it is
simply recreated by Legacy using default settings the next time you open
Legacy.

...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\ also has folders for your Data and
your Media but you don't have to use them.
When you use another folder instead - like your C:\Legacy8\ folder then
you should say that is where your data and/or your media is at Options -
Customise 6.1 and 6.2
That way, especially with Media, Legacy will help you keep your media
properly connected.

The good news is that if just your data and media are in your
C:\Legacy8\ folder, you can rename it to \Legacy\ or \Legacy9\ and
record that in 6.1 and 6.2. In addition, if that's where your data file
is, you'll need to use the File - Open in Legacy to open your file the
next time you open Legacy and Set Options - Customise 1.2 to open the
file you want in the right folder (don't just see the filename and
assume it's the one in the right folder).

Then you're set.

More information on finding Legacy files on your computer if you need it.

Re: [LegacyUG] V9 Error Code 3045

2017-04-24 Thread Cathy Pinner

David,
There is a problem with the Legacy Cloud (I think there still is) so
untick that if it is ticked.

If you still get this error, contacting support is your best option
after checking that you don't have Legacy FamilySearch or Legacy
Charting open or even Legacy 7.5 though that is likely a different file
with the same name?

You may still be negotiating the change in Default locations for data
and media if you were using the Legacy 7.5 defaults.
It was the changes to the defaults that allows 7.5 and 8 or 9 to be
installed at the same time. Legacy 9 overwrites Legacy 8.
(Legacy 7 overwrote Legacy 6 unless computer literate people changed the
defaults.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Writer for UK Baptisms

2017-04-24 Thread Ian Thomas
Carolyn, that sounds interesting. My ancestors and connections to the side are
AU, NZ, England Wales Scotland Ireland. There are very peripheral USA, Canada,
South Africa.
Currently, my use of sources is primitive. I’m not using SourceWriter (though I
thought I should be).

It raises the question to me how difficult it will be to convert my ‘basic’
source entries to SourceWriter. I will check out Help.

But you can create your own source templates using the basic system.
I have a set that works well for New Zealand, Australian, UK records.
Developed as the source writer system is way to US centric (long winded) for
my records.

Ian,
It's not possible to make your own SourceWriter templates. This has been asked
for, but for some reason rejected.

Another tip for UK records. Anything at the The National Archives can be
sourced using a Census template that has the relevant fields for the Department
code and series number in the Master Source and a field for the piece number in
the Source Detail.
I add folio and page to the piece box as well to follow TNA citation style. In
this detail Elizabeth Shown Mills seems to break her principles of keeping a
reference together. I haven't seen the latest editions of her work to see if
she's amended her English Census models.

Wouldn't it be great if Millenia provided add on packages that covered the
different methods of recording in various countries at different times, but
that would be a daunting task I'm sure.

Or – does anyone know whether Legacy’s SourceWriter Templates created by others
for their specific purpose are “transferrable”? That is, are they a separate
named file on the creator’s disk, which could be uploaded to a site where
others might download and then install into their Legacy system on their
computer?

If that is a possibility, in effect, a Legacy community resource could be
created.

I’m not sure whether the format of SourceWriter has changed, from v8 (or
before?) to v9 of Legacy.

Cathy,

Thank you for your quick and helpful reply.

You seem to have found a way to record non US sources in Legacy that would work
for me. One of my concerns was possibly having a different Master Source for
every church. If I understand your two examples correctly you have some Master
Sources for individual churches and some for a central depository depending on
where you sourced the information.

Rather than have a mix I think I will start off my baptism Master Sources using
a central depository (SWHT/Parochial Church Council/Findmypast), understanding
that nothing works for ever. I have overlooked marriage banns in the past
because I didn't know what to do with them. Now you have given me direction.

Wouldn't it be great if Millenia provided add on packages that covered the
different methods of recording in various countries at different times, but
that would be a daunting task I'm sure.

Thanks again,

Barry Godbeer

Barry,

Church Records include Baptisms, Burials and Marriages. The records are
recorded in Church Registers or "record books" in Legacy speak.
So you're looking for Church records > Church record books > created at local
level (parish, congregation, meeting, etc) > and then the format you've used.
I've chosen to use the Microfilm/fiche rather than online images as I've seem
some at the Archives on microfilm in a rare visit to England and some online.
I use the Film ID in the Master Source to acknowledge both sources: eg: Images
courtesy of South West Heritage Trust & Parochial Church Council & FindMyPast
I actually make a Master Source for each church but I could have instead chosen
to make a Master Source for each Archive.
In my case: Dorset History Centre, the London Metropolitan Archives, etc.
I learn where the registers actually are arc hived.

So one Master Source reads: St Margaret (Topsham, Devon, England); Images
courtesy of South West Heritage Trust and Parochial Church Council &
FindMyPast, Devon Heritage Centre, Exeter.
and a source citation:
St Margaret (Topsham, Devon, England), "Marriages 1417A/PR/1/15 1837-1881,"
Page 1, No 1 1837 marriage of William Harris & Rebecca Mawditt; Images courtesy

Re: [LegacyUG] mapping locations

2017-04-24 Thread Cathy Pinner

Cheryl
Are you saying that it was OK in Legacy 8 or is this the first time
you've tried Map My Family?

In the Master Location list with maps on, have you asked Legacy to auto
map/geocode your locations? If you do that, you need to check them.

In the Master Location list, there is a button near the top of the
screen - with "Geo-Code" written on it.
Click that and there are a number of options which include Geo code the
current location again (meaning the highlighted location)

That may give you a better mapping.
Or simply go to the right place on the map and then right click on the
map to reset the pin.

Bing maps, which Legacy links to, are pretty good at finding places but
I don't know about US locations. The normal problems I have is for
historic locations where the name has changed. Otherwise, it does a
pretty good job of my Australian and UK locations.

Once you've verified the relevant locations, go back to Map My Family.

In my Legacy 9 the maps seem to more than a little off.

As an example, my 3rd great grandparents were married in Madison
County, Ohio. I thought - and Google agrees - that that is between
Columbus and Dayton. With Map my Family it is on Lake Erie, east of
Cleveland toward the New York line. Logan County, Illinois, has moved
to eastern Macon County, Illinois.

Note that there is no other info in those locations, just the county
name, state, USA.

What is causing this? I assume it is something I am doing but what?
