Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages

2017-08-17 Thread Anne Lo Forte Willson
And just to throw another reason for two marriages out there...my
great-grandparents married on a dare in the next county over, then, went
home to their families and had a real wedding a month later with the pastor
and all the families. I have both the marriage licenses and returns.
Reportedly they never told her mother, who would have been horribly
shocked. This occurred in Utah in 1920.

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages

2017-08-15 Thread Jack Earnshaw
In my case they were both in CofE churches in Kent, England and “after banns”.
He was in the army and it is suggested that he didn’t get permission of CO
before first marriage – in which case she wouldn’t get a pension if he died
first. His army records only show the second marriage.

I noticed a man was married twice in my Legacy 9. I knew he wasn't so I clicked
on it. It shows he is married to Elizabeth Thomas [9054] as preferred and
Elizabeth Thomas [9054] as the other wife. She shows the same two marriages to
him, duplicate names with same number. Duplicates do not show in the Name List.
However, there are two marriages, MRIN 1082 and 1084.

I can't see a way to merge the two marriages nor to delete one of them.

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages

2017-08-14 Thread Sherry
Not uncommon. I have two couples in my file that were married twice - one
got married to his second wife before the divorce was finalized with his
first wife and had to remarry the 2nd one after the divorce finalized, and
the other couple had a small private wedding and then a year later had a
larger wedding - her dream wedding at Disney World!

We have a friend who divorced and he and his wife later remarried.

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages

2017-08-14 Thread Roberta Montpetit
It used to be that the church took care of getting the marriage license for
the couple and banns (3) were published prior to the wedding.

However, thanks to modern times and people who took advantage of the
published banns to rob the families' homes during the ceremony and
celebration after, banns are no longer published and couples must now
obtain the marriage license themselves.

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages

2017-08-14 Thread Roberta Montpetit
Where were they married? In some countries, a couple must have a civil
ceremony before they can be married by a priest in a church. I know that
is the case in a number of European countries as well in Latin America and
at least in former French colonies in Africa.

In Canada (and I believe at least the US), both ceremonies are combined
when a couple marries in a church.

I knew who the children were. I just opened the name list and began to link
them. But had it been a common surname in my 12000 names it would have been
a big issue.

I haven't used Treefinder. Learning something new...

is to use Treefinder and they should be there as separate trees.

Nothing wrong with duplicate marriages – I have a family who married twice, a

This is why most people will NOT merge data into their data files.

If one is to look at Page 234 of the book and then step 4 at the bottom of the
page. It states “merges those that have EXACTLY the same information.”

Since there was something different in these marriages information a duplicated
was made.

Aren’t these lovey new tools just GREAT.

I posted this before and didn't get any responses, so I'll try again :-)

Somehow during a merge (Intellimerge) I ended up with every single marriage
related to the merged file duplicated.  Male #1 is married to Female #2 twice;
the 2nd marriage is separate and does not link to the children of the 1st
marriage, which I am grateful for. So as I've tried to figure this out on my
own, I have found the quickest way to remove these marriages is to go to the
marriage list and go down the list one by one, visually noting the duplicates,
highlighting the bogus marriage (it has a much higher RIN) and then making the
3 or 4 clicks to unlink each marriage. This has been very time consuming but
at least it's better than trying to browse through the file or having to be in
family view to remove each link.

I would like to be able to see a list of these duplicate marriages that may
still exist so I can see where I am on it and what needs to be done and ones
I've overlooked.

Is there a way to create such a list? I browsed through the search criteria
for marriages but it didn't seem to fit. I haven't done a lot of searches
though and definitely nothing this specific.

Thanks to anyone who can help! If it can't be done, I hope a legacy moderator
will at least just tell me that I simply have to continue going one by one
through the marriage list. At least then I'd know :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages

2014-04-06 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Kathy,

Did you happen to stop the merge process, then start it again? That can
cause some problems.

Also, there could be a glitch in the Legacy software, so you need to
report it to Support. I had some sources duplicated by Legacy inserting
normally hidden formatting code into text in notes and other places. It
appeared to happen with only one revision of Legacy 7.5. A soon as the
source notes are opened, the rogue formatting code disappears, so it is
only visible in the preview. It was a lot of work to open all the
duplicate sources, which removed the visible formatting code, and then
use the new option to merge duplicate sources.

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages

2014-04-06 Thread Cathy Pinner
The merge shouldn't produce duplicate marriages.

If it is, something is going wrong either in the
merge itself or the way it is being done.

Of course David, the merge enables you to merge
people who don't have EXACTLY the same
information. Only the automatic bits of merge require EXACT.

I don't think there are any new tools in the
merge part of Legacy in Legacy 8 apart from a
special merge using FamilySearch IDs.

The merge isn't trouble free when it comes to
sources of events apart from the vital events.
I'm not sure of other problems but haven't tested merging for awhile.

I have other reasons for not merging data from
someone else into my family file as a general
rule. Someone else rarely has the same standards
for data entry and sourcing that you have. I
think it's better to be slow but sure when entering data.

However, we all have different reasons for doing family history.

Kathy,

Did you happen to stop the merge process, then
start it again? That can cause some problems.

Also, there could be a glitch in the Legacy
software, so you need to report it to Support. I
had some sources duplicated by Legacy inserting
normally hidden formatting code into text in
notes and other places. It appeared to happen
with only one revision of Legacy 7.5. A soon as
the source notes are opened, the rogue
formatting code disappears, so it is only
visible in the preview. It was a lot of work to
open all the duplicate sources, which removed
the visible formatting code, and then use the
new option to merge duplicate sources.

If one is to look at Page 234 of the book and
then step 4 at the bottom of the page. It
states “merges t those that have EXACTLY the same information.â€Â
ÂÂ
Since there was something different in these
marriages information a duplicated was made.
ÂÂ
Aren’t t these lovey new tools just GREAT.

Subject: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages
ÂÂ
I posted this before and didn't get any responses, so I'll try again :-)
ÂÂ
Somehow during a merge (Intellimerge) I ended
up with every single marriage related to the
merged file duplicated.  Male #1 is married
to Female #2 twice; the 2nd marriage is
separate and does not link to the children of
the 1st marriage, which I am grateful for. ÂÂ
So as I've tried to figure this out on my own,
I have found the quickest way to remove these
marriages is to go to the marriage list and go
down the list one by one, visually noting the
duplicates, highlighting the bogus marriage (it
has a much higher RIN) and then making the 3 or
4 clicks to unlink each marriage.  This has
been very time consuming but at least it's
better than trying to browse through the file
or having to be in family view to remove each link.
ÂÂ
I would like to be able to see a list of these
duplicate marriages that may still exist so I
can see where I am on it and what needs to be
done and ones I've overlooked. ÂÂ
Is there a way to create such a list?  I
browsed through the search criteria for
marriages but it didn't seem to fit.  I
haven't done a lot of searches though and definitely nothing this specific.
ÂÂ
Thanks to anyone who can help!  If it can't
be done, I hope a legacy moderator will at
least just tell me that I simply have to
continue going one by one through the marriage list. At least then I'd know
:-)

Look on the Miscellaneous searches tab. There is a search there for
individuals with multiple spouses.

Kathy,
Ltools has an option to find duplicate marriages.

I did a file merge awhile back (used intellimerge at suggestion of multiple

Each spouse shows two marriages to the same person.  I was removing some one by
one awhile back (as I came across them) but it would be nice to get this
cleaned up once and for all.

Any suggestions?  Thanks!  Kathy
