Hi,

To prevent spam, I configured the wiki to block 'href' through the regular
expression

\bhref\b

which should match 'href' as a separate word. I hope this will stop stupid
spam bots that try to instert HTML links. Words that _contain_ 'href'
should still be allowed.

Hi Frank,

[[!Windows]]

(note the '!') You can also tag it with some other useful word.

This allows users to click on the generated link and see a list of all

There are more tricks that can be used, but I'll leave of here :-)

Umm... 'svn messages' ? (I assume you mean the messages from the wiki?)

So when a link was changed, this can easily be reverted. And at
ftp.lyx.org are only virus-free binaries.

At least one problem is the latency between change and reversion.
Perhaps a compromise would be to add a public edit password for certain
pages, like we have a password for uploading files.

Another alternative is to let e.g. the page Windows.Windows include a page
called say Windows.Windows-Comment. Then we add a very visible 'edit
link', so that users can add their comments to another page, without
actually requiring access to Windows.Windows directly.

of that page with a password. In addition, people like Uwe keep an extra
eye on that page.

It's at least an improvement, as we wish to retain the 'wikiness'.

If you see any other pages you think should be protected similarly, please
let us know.

Thanks and regards,

Umm... 'svn messages' ? (I assume you mean the messages from the wiki?)

So when a link was changed, this can easily be reverted. And at
ftp.lyx.org are only virus-free binaries.

At least one problem is the latency between change and reversion.
Perhaps a compromise would be to add a "public" edit password for certain
pages, like we have a password for uploading files.

Another alternative is to let e.g. the page Windows.Windows include a page
called say Windows.Windows-Comment. Then we add a very visible 'edit
link', so that users can add their comments to another page, without
actually requiring access to Windows.Windows directly.

Thanks, I'd forgotten about that - it's a _very_ good point. I don't check

You mean that lyx-docs get an email, and then you have to check what pages

I agre it is not very nice. There are several ways you can help us with
this. The easiest thing for us is if you can check out the web pages
locally using Subversion, e.g. on *nix you do:

svn co svn://svn.lyx.org/lyx/www-user/trunk www-user

If you're on Windows, then install TortoiseSVN and get them from:
svn://svn.lyx.org/lyx/www-user/trunk www-user

Once you have the web pages, you can modify the colours to something you
like, we can have a look, and since it's bound to be an improvement,
change the colour scheme at lyx.org:-)

If you are unable to do the above, but can suggest colour codes to me I
can try and implement that to a working copy of the web pages. In order
to verify the commans above, I checked out a copy here:

http://www.lyx.org/~chr/www-user/

To look at the source (and retreive files one by one), you can browse the
source of the web pages here:

http://www.lyx.org/trac/browser/www-user/trunk
I'm guessing the files that control appearance can be found in this
directory:

http://www.lyx.org/trac/browser/www-user/trunk/styles

I think these are the files that need changing:
http://www.lyx.org/trac/browser/www-user/trunk/styles/lographics.css
http://www.lyx.org/trac/browser/www-user/trunk/styles/higraphics.css

Dunno if this query fits into the docs mailing list, but at least it

Do you have a suggestion for the name of the page? (It doesn't have to be

I'd just call it
http://wiki.lyx.org/DevelDoc/Suggestions
I'd like to put things there and then someone more familiar with
documentation just puts it in when docs are updated.

I'm neither completely against the name nor for it. What would you see it
used for? I think that if you come up with a paragraph describing the
purpose of the page (we'll put that paragraph on the page!), the name will
come as well.

Here's a start:

This page is for users to add suggestions for improving the
documentation.

What more? Some concrete examples perhaps of what/how to use the page?

Also we could use

http://wiki.lyx.org/DevelDoc/FAQUpdates

E.g. I ask something on the list and get a answer that solves the
problem. I'd then just post the solution on the

http://wiki.lyx.org/DevelDoc/UpdatesFAQ

and it could be found and referenced to in the ML and included into the
docs. We could even put this in the signature of the mailing list: Has
your problem been solved? Then consider writing it into:

http://wiki.lyx.org/DevelDoc/FAQUpdates

 to help others.

Or can we use http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ for this purpose?

I like your ideas, but I think using the group

http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ

is better. There is already 47 pages in that group:

http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/FAQ?action=searchq=FAQ%2F+

I wonder if one of those pages might be suitable. There is for instance:

http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/Unsorted1

which are quite big.

A lazy solution is to move everything in FAQ/Unsorted to FAQ/Unsorted2,
and then ask people to place answers in FAQ/Unsorted.

Finally, there's the page FAQ/Unanswered.

It's a bit of a mess really, but I think we should keep the FAQ in the
group FAQ.

PS. I like the idea to have the ML include a link to the FAQ.

Eh... since I just added the pages yesterevening, I don't think it was
much of a delay :-)

Do you have a suggestion for the name of the page? (It doesn't have to be
 in the group Devel/).

I'd just call it
http://wiki.lyx.org/DevelDoc/Suggestions
I'd like to put things there and then someone more familiar with
documentation just puts it in when docs are updated.

I'm neither completely against the name nor for it. What would you see it
used for? I think that if you come up with a paragraph describing the
purpose of the page (we'll put that paragraph on the page!), the name will
come as well.

Here's a start:

This page is for users to add suggestions for improving the
documentation.

What more? Some concrete examples perhaps of what/how to use the page?

Also we could use

http://wiki.lyx.org/DevelDoc/FAQUpdates

E.g. I ask something on the list and get a answer that solves the
problem. I'd then just post the solution on the

http://wiki.lyx.org/DevelDoc/UpdatesFAQ

and it could be found and referenced to in the ML and included into the
docs. We could even put this in the signature of the mailing list: Has
your problem been solved? Then consider writing it into:

http://wiki.lyx.org/DevelDoc/FAQUpdates

 to help others.

Or can we use http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ for this purpose?

I like your ideas, but I think using the group

http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ

is better. There is already 47 pages in that group:

http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/FAQ?action=search=FAQ%2F+

I wonder if one of those pages might be suitable. There is for instance:

http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/Unsorted

and

http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/Unsorted1

which are quite big.

A lazy solution is to move everything in FAQ/Unsorted to FAQ/Unsorted2,

List usage - messages from the wiki

2007-04-16 Thread christian . ridderstrom

Today the wiki sends a notification post to this list on a daily basis
with the subject
[LyX wiki] recent notify posts

This message lists the pages at the wiki that have been edited since the
last notification message.

Is the frequency of these messages ok? Should I make it send messages
less often for instance?

However, my real question concerns the content of this message. In
addition to a list of pages that have changed, I'm considering including
the actual changes to the wiki pages (like a diff/patch).

This would allow seeing changes to the pages directly from the
notification message. Primarily it would allow me to visually scan for
spam edits with a quick glance.

A drawback is that the size of the messages will increase, it'll be more
like a daily digest of a email list.

Thoughts/opinions? (There's no rush - I wouldn't implement this in the
near future anyway)

Best regards,

Ok. (I didn't expect an objection here).

Don't do this as this will for some days result in huge emails. The
current behaviour is OK, I usually go on that page and veiw there the
diffs when I'm interested.

Yes, some days such a message could become rather long, and that could be
a problem for some users. (Especially modem users, if those still exist).

Another problem generally speaking is security, since in theory some of
the wiki pages might be read protected so that not everyone can read
them. That's a general problem and not a problem for wiki.lyx.org.

Would you change your opinion if there were two kinds of notifications
sent out. One notification post that's just like today, and another
notification post with a different subject that also contains the patches?

Anyway, I'll postpone all of this until much later. Before I bring it up
for discussion again, I'll see about implementing something and sending it
only to myself. Then I can also make a judgement about what the real
volume is.

Weirdest spam for ever, here's some of the stuff...

Discrimination

The word discrimination comes from the Latin discriminare, which
means to distinguish between. However, discrimination, as used
in this article, is more than distinction or differentiation; it
is action based on prejudice resulting in unfair treatment of
people. To discriminate socially is to make a distinction between
people on the basis of class or category without regard to
individual merit. Examples of social discrimination include
racial, religious, sexual, weight, disability, ethnic,
height-related, employment discrimination and age-related
discrimination.

and so on. I checked, there were no hidden HTML or anything.

Anyway, just to be on the safe side I blocked the word 'vestal' from

* Once a day it generates a list of files in uploads/

* The logs with lists of files are rotated, and can be found

# /usr/sbin/useradd -G svnusers uwe

that Uwe then changes when he logs in.

Maybe I can, but I do not know how :)

If you have root access, I think I know how. Log in to aussie.lyx.org,
become root and execute this command

# /usr/sbin/useradd -G svnusers uwe

which should create an account ('uwe'), and also make that user a member
of the group 'svnusers'. Finally you set some temporary password

# passwd uwe

that Uwe then changes when he logs in.

Are these considered errors in the manual, or features? If they are
errors, should I enter a bug for each one, or is this email sufficie?

In general, you should enter a bug report for each problem. Duplicates are
not (much) of a problem.

I'm afraid I couldn't help you on these specific issues, but... in case
you don't get a response in this list and you want more help (which I
suspect you do!), please try to re-post to either the developers' list or
to the users' list.

I do like Lyx, and I hope that this email doesn't suggest that I don't
appreciate what a great amount of effort has gone into it.

Certainly not! Reporting bugs is in a sense a way of showing that you
care, thanks!

How do I get these missing files?
Can LyX handle .tex files of class gazette.cls ? This is a class required by
contributors to the journal /Gazette of the Australian Mathematical Society./

Hi John,
this is the documentation list, you should ask your question on the users'
list. It's much more active, and that's where you'll most likely get an
answer.

More spam. Christian, can you please delete this? (I can't).

To delete a page (I did that), just erase all the content and replace the
text with the single work

delete

and save the page. That will delete

It's unrelated. It's junk which is entered to the Wiki, not junk mail.

It's a mixed blessing that the wiki is getting more well known... I do
wonder how they find it, or why they choose it.

Further blocking of wiki spammers

2006-07-15 Thread christian . ridderstrom

Hi

I noticed that you're very good at reverting spam, but to reduce the load
I've added a new entry to

http://wiki.lyx.org/Site/Blocklist

The previous two entries prevented the spambot from actually inserting
links, but it kept destroying stuff. Now I'm also blocking the text:

u style=display: none;

which seems to occur in each spam attempt. Hopefully this will make it
even better for us.
