Geoff, the NYC punk rocker turned world-travelling Meteorite Man, has burrowed himself into Tucson like a tick and Steve, the space rock broker and owner of the only brick-n-mortar meteorite store in the Western hemisphere turned Meteorite Man, well, he's never been afraid to take the man out of Arkansas when someone mentions a meteorite. [meteorite-list] Fundraiser for Bill Southern - Please Help
Most of you will know either his name or his site and quite a few of you know his generosity of spirit. Bill Southern of Nuggetshooters (http://www.nuggetshooter.ipbhost.com/) is a longtime member of the meteorite community. I know him as a man who never passes up a chance to help anyone who needs it. He has given to every one of my fundraisers and it's time for help to come back his way. Bill's wife of 27 years, Barb, has stage IV cancer that has spread to her brain. She has had a lot of radiation therapy and most recently, a second biopsy that bore grim news. Like so many, they don't have health insurance and the medical bills are piling up. Without help, Bill could lose everything trying to add days to Barb's life. That's where you and I come in. Bill and some really special friends have donated some meteorite-related items for me to sell to raise money. They need help quickly so please contact me off-list to purchase any of these OUTSTANDING offerings on a first-come, first-served basis: - WHAT'S SO MYSTERIOUS ABOUT METEORITES, and ICE AGE MAMMALS OF NORTH AMERICA, by Dorothy Norton (Anonymous Donation) $50.00 http://www.mrmeteorite.com/fundraiseritems1.htm - GEBIL KAMIL, 65 Gram individual (Donated by Robert Cucchiara/Meteorite Madness) $65.00 http://www.mrmeteorite.com/fundraiseritems2.htm - BASSIKOUNOU Individual, 14.8 grams (Donated by Robert Cucchiara/Meteorite Madness) $75.00 http://www.mrmeteorite.com/fundraiseritems3.htm - CAMPO DEL CIELO Crystal, 119 grams (Donated by Robert Cucchiara/Meteorite Madness) $100.00 http://www.mrmeteorite.com/fundraiseritems4.htm - BENDEGO, Brazil, 23.4 Grams (Donated by Robert Cucchiara/Meteorite Madness) $100.00 http://www.mrmeteorite.com/fundraiseritems5.htm - NWA 869, Small Individual (Donated by Robert Cucchiara/Meteorite Madness) $40.00 http://www.mrmeteorite.com/fundraiseritems6.htm - CE stereo microscope with an extra camera, polarizing stage, five objectives, cover, software... -- The whole package! Re: [meteorite-list] IMCA Money Matters my resignation
Dear Michael and List, I have too much respect for Art and this list to start or continue an argument so I am going to respond to this as carefully as possible. I would like to apologize to anyone in advance if I offend with this email. Please delete this email right now if you don't care to hear anymore about this. I would like to be perfectly clear that the Foote fundraiser had NO connection to the IMCA. That fundraiser was all me, with the guidance of one of the major donors. No funds came from the IMCA, no funds went through the IMCA, and the IMCA was not involved in any way. That said and what I have explained below, these entire two paragraphs are ABSOLUTELY not true: (they also received other money from the IMCA and from individuals who were made aware of their peril by the IMCA). While expressing overwhelming and sincere gratitude to Those who had sent money, she told me that the IMCA treasurer had later contacted her and asked her to return half the money the IMCA had generated for them, stating only, Other people are in need. The timing was the worst possible as CJ had just been told by his doctors that Gary's life was hanging by a thread and she could loose him at any moment. She reports she told the IMCA treasurer that every cent had gone to medical costs and basic survival needs. She was then asked for a written accounting of how all money she received was spent. CJ told me that at that point her emotional state and the circumstances of life and death they were facing, hardly allowed for such an accounting and the conversation was terminated. I asked the Footes early on how much money they needed and the three of us agreed that $3,200 was my goal. All totaled, well over twice that amount was raised and distributed to them. All but $235 of that amount was sent directly to their PayPal account and did not pass through my hands. They had numerous times asked how they would ever repay my kindness and I always told them to help someone else someday. I am in a position to understand their being overwhelmed with so much help from strangers. I have been the recipient of so much kindness since I became disabled that I always feel I owe it to the universe to help everyone I can. Near the end of the fundraiser, another member of our community was in need of help PLUS one of the donors was upset with what the Foote's spent the money on (it was not medical, btw) PLUS there was a misunderstanding(?) about the money raised from items clearly donated to cover my shipping costs. I asked Gary and CJ for $2,000 to pass along to that next family and, well, the rest is a memory I wish I could forget. The Foote's were provided with a spreadsheet of each donation I knew about (Like I said, most of the money went to them directly). Gary was well on the mend when things went awry. I know this because I frequently spoke to him on the phone and he was writing and responding to my emails. I know in my heart that I did the right thing getting involved but I have to say, my integrity was called into question and my feelings still haven't recovered. I conducted that next fundraiser from zero and haven't gotten involved in one since. Should the Foote's need any of the donation correspondence, PayPal receipts, their emails to me, my emails to them, any of the accounting, etc., I still have each and every bit of it. Michael Blood, your issue with that painting is with your painter. Not me, not Gary and CJ, not the buyer, and not the IMCA. If we were to use my calculator, 25% of nothing is still ZERO. Respectfully, Maria Haas Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2012 19:44:43 -0700 From: mlbl...@cox.net To: star_wars_collec...@yahoo.com; jasonu...@gmail.com; meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] IMCA Money Matters my resignation Hi Greg and all, Money issues were one of the key reasons I resigned from the IMCA, Though my resignation was not limited to that, do PLEASE BE SURE TO READ 1 Addendum HERE ARE THE (major) REASONS: I RESIGNED FROM THE IMCA: 1- Though many members have repeatedly asked for a financial report from the IMCA, members have been told, by the board, QUOTE: What is the big deal? CJ told me how grateful she was for all the financial help the meteorite community had given them and that the buyer of the Jerry Armstrong painting paid them directly (they also received other money from the IMCA and from individuals who were made aware of their peril by the IMCA). Hello All, As expected, the fake (NWA 4925) and potentially fake (NWA 4881 and NWA 4734) material is being sold by other sellers now. Seller bfr475 in Blue Mound, IL USA: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Rocks-Fossils-Minerals-/3213/i.html?item=251057332565pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item3a742ee155_ssn=bfr475 adrian332010 in Ontario, Canada: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Rocks-Fossils-Minerals-/3213/i.html?item=260963123019pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2hash=item3cc29d3f4b_ssn=adrian332010 See updated webpage with examples of the front and reverse sides of the boxes here: http://www.impactika.com/steelhorse1994.pdf Again, if anyone has purchased pieces of NWA 4881 and NWA 4734 in these boxes marked with American Meteorite Collector's Society Authenticity Guaranteed on the reverse side, please let me know. One of our very kind and generous scientists has offered to do the analysis on these other two for us and I'd rather not have to purchase them from these sellers. Please feel free to contact me with questions. An enthusiastic IMCA applicant named Daniel Noyes bought some supposed NWA 4925 from eBay seller steelhorse1994. The material is packaged a lot like Chladni's Mars and Moon boxes (except they are square instead of rectangular) and I am sure that is by design. The red flag for the applicant was the reverse side of the box where it said, American Meteorite Collector's Society Authenticity Guaranteed. Of course, there is no such association. Steelhorse1994 is also selling what he is calling NWA 4881 and NWA 4734 in the same packaging. The reverse side of the box is not being shown in the auctions so you'll have to study the picture to identify these boxes. A webpage is being prepared to show all three boxes from the front and an example of the reverse side. For now, this page has a picture of the front and back of the NWA 4925 box. When the other page is ready, I'll post that as well. You can see what the boxes look like here: http://www.impactika.com/steelhorse1994.jpg Now the really bad news... Daniel sent the material to Dr. Randy Koretov for examination and his preliminary analysis reads as follows: Dear Mr. Noyes: I have preliminary compositional data for your alleged martian. I can say on the basis of that data the rock is definitely NOT any kind of meteorite. It's a terrestrial rock. I'll send you the final data in about 3 weeks. Randy Korotev I had been in contact with steelhorse1994 before I knew about the analysis. His name is Max and he told me he purchased the material in a bulk lot a few months ago and cannot remember who he purchased it from. I don't know if he is the perpetrator or not. I have emailed with him a few times and he seemed honest but the fact remains he is still selling FAKE material. No analysis of NWA 4881 and NWA 4734 have been done but their authenticity is also guaranteed by the American Meteorite Collectors Society and may also be FAKE. Please beware. I count 193 of these boxes having been sold just since the middle of February. Several of us have already contacted eBay to have the remaining auctions pulled. I have followed every lead I could find to trace these boxes back to whomever put them together and I got nowhere. If you know anything about where they came from, I would welcome the information. I would like to be clear that these boxes, sold by DANOVANNI, at http://www.ebay.com/itm/AUTHENTICATED-MOON-MARS-METEORITES-2-Premium-Rock-Art-Displays-w-Easels-/130690281958 ARE authentic and are NOT part of the fraud. If any of you have already purchased any of this bogus and potentially bogus material, the IMCA would like one of the NWA 4881 and NWA 4734 boxes from this seller for analysis. Please contact me about that and any questions or concerns. Please keep an eye out for this fake material and lets put our heads together to get them out of the meteorite market. An Ocean City man said he did just that. Quantcast Derrick Miller was walking along the Boardwalk toward his Seventh Street home around 5:20 a.m., as he does every night after finishing his overnight taxi shift, when he saw an object falling from the sky at 21st Street and the Boardwalk. Miller said he saw the object while glancing over his shoulder, keeping a lookout for a fox that lives in the area, one he likes to feed hot dogs or doughnuts. I saw a shooting star, said Miller, 37. It landed 15, 20 yards away from me in the sand. I walked up to see what it was. It still had, like, little flames coming out of these holes, and it was, like, glowing red hot. I basically just buried it and marked it so I could come back to get it the next day. When I got back, unburied it -- and the sand around it, it looked like little shards of glass, real thin glass. It was still warm to the touch. Miller said the rock-like object measures 1 1/2 inches long by 1 inch wide and weighs 20 grams. He said it left a foot-wide divot in the sand 6 inches deep. He said the only other person out on the Boardwalk at the time was a police officer. I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time, Miller said. A meteor is a piece of debris that falls to Earth from space. Most are pebble-sized, according to NASA. They are categorized either as a find, with no regard to when they arrived, or a fall -- which means it's confirmed that a person watched the rock plummet to the surface and later retrieved it. Given that the earth's surface is about two-thirds water, most meteors land in the ocean. Meteors can land on other planetary bodies, too, like the moon. According to Paul Warren, a researcher with the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California Los Angeles, it's unlikely that a fall meteorite would have been burning or glowing at ground level. You see, the object comes through the atmosphere in a very brief time. It's coming at a cosmic velocity, an interplanetary velocity of about 10 miles a second or so, Warren said. So the outside skin of the object will get very hot as it first encounters the atmosphere, but the interior is still very cold -- it's coming from space, where its temperature is freezing. So, by the time anybody could get to it, that skin, it's probably not going to be glowing by the time anybody can go over and look at it. It actually cools down as it comes down through the lower atmosphere. Everything is slowed greatly coming through the atmosphere unless it's very big. Quantcast If it's a big object, it'll make it down with its cosmic velocity, and that'll be potentially catastrophic, with a big impact crater. Meteorites, they've been slowed down and they land in a comparatively gentle way, he said. According to The Meteoritical Society, a nonprofit group, there have been a total of 1,231 falls recorded globally to date. In the U.S., there were 149 since 1810, and in Maryland, only two have ever been confirmed: a 16 1/2-pound meteorite that fell near the Potomac River in Charles County in 1825, and a 24-gram object in St. Mary's County north of Point Lookout State Park in 1919. Miller said he still hasn't decided what to do with his meteorite. I got a couple calls. One guy wants to buy it. I don't know, I really haven't thought about it yet. It's just sitting

Hi List, I know this was probably posted already, but has anyone heard anything more on this? Sept 1st Fireball Anybody notice a massive fireball come through here? Posted By The Sault Star Posted 1 hour ago A former Michigan man is seeking anyone in the Sault Ste. Marie area who may have witnessed anything unusual in the skies Sept. 1. According to numerous accounts, a massive fireball streaked across the upper part of Michigan's lower peninsula shortly after 9 p.m. Dozens of witnesses describe it alternately growing green and red, and leaving a trail of glowing fragments as it traveled eastward. Looking to some like a burning jet plan, from some localities it was seen for seven seconds and from others deafening sonic booms were heard that rattles home for miles. Reports have come in from as far away as Wisconsin and Sudbury, indicating it landed in Michigan. Now, Darryl Pitt believes he can triangulate its landing spot more accurately if he got local witnesses. Pitt is curator of the Macovich Collection in New York City, one of the world's largest collection of space rocks. He calls Sault Ste. Marie a perfect observation point because he needs at least a couple of accounts north of the fireball's trajectory to pinpoint a landing spot. He promises to visit the Sault for a talk and presentation of specimens, including from the moon and Mars. The fireball was news to Sharon Valli, president of the Twin Sault Astronomy Club. Valli said the club met last week and no one brought up the subject. That definitely would have come up, because it's a big thing, she said. Maria, I weep as I write this..friends that we have had for years have disappeared from our lives since the word CANCER came to haunt us, but those who are a part of the meteorite community opened their hearts and without a moments hesitation they were there both with donations and through the auction that you so graciously ran in our benefit. [meteorite-list] AD(?): Gary Foote Recovery Auction
Hello Everyone, I am still waiting for pictures of two items but that's not going to stop me from starting what I'm calling a silent auction. Auctions for nine items will start tonight at 7:00 PM PST and will run for seven days. The balance of the items will start tomorrow at 7:00 PM PST and those auctions will also run for seven days. Ending dates and times for each item can be found on each item's respective page. The auction ending times are staggered by 15 minutes to allow all bids to be recorded prior to the items closing. You'll see what I mean when you visit the website and click on what you want to bid on: http://meteoriteimpact.com/footeauction.htm. Some really spectacular items have been donated: - An original oil on canvas depiction of the Tagish Lake fall by Jerry Armstrong - A serial numbered Nininger/Canyon Diablo coin that is #9 of only 10 that exist - A 167.2 Bassikounou fragment that has beautiful crust and the broken edge shows the fresh interior and two impact melt areas - Two Carancas fragments -- one has a visible clast - A 91.2 gram Vaca Muerta individual - An oriented NWA 869 with frothy bubbles - The World of Metorites from A to Z poster by Sarah Kenndy of Jensen Scientifics and Geoff Notkin - HH's copy of a SCIENCE magazine from 1961 - Bricks from the Nininger Museum - NWA 4766 Mars box made by Chladni's Heirs And there's even more than that! All bids will be recorded in the order in which I receive them. Telephone bids take priority over email bids so if you think there's a chance your email bid won't make it to me by the close of the auction please call me. Let's not forget why we're doing this. The purpose of this auction is to raise money for our meteorite friends, Gary and C.J. Foote. Gary was diagnosed with advanced-stage prostate cancer earlier this year. He had a prostatectomy in April and has had several complications and an additional surgery since then. Their family needs help to make it through this incredibly hard time so please give generously by bidding on the items in our auction. This is one time where anything you do, no matter how small, will help them. Hopefully, all of your questions will be answered on the website but if you have any others, please don't hesitate to contact me. She asked me to thank everyone who has emailed and sent donations for her and Gary and will answer emails as she can. I have considered the best ways to handle this particular fundraiser and I could use your input. A couple of people have donated spectacular items to help raise money and I'm trying to figure out how best to give them away. These are our options right now: 1. Would you rather I give the largest item away to the highest bidder, the second largest item to the second highest bidder, etc. (a great idea from Michael Blood), 2. Would you rather I put together a small raffle? I could close it out with a drawing at the Denver show in September. 3. Would you rather I just sell the items through a silent auction? I just need to know which would you prefer. Just to let you know what has already been donated: - An original painting(!) of the Tagish Lake fall by Jerry Armstrong You can see his work at (http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/JerryArmstrong.html and http://www.fallingrocks.com/paintings.htm - A gold-finish Nininger coin donated by Rob Wesel. Only 10 gold-finish coins were made! It's is similar to this one: http://www.nakhladogmeteorites.com/catalog/nincoin.htm Should you have any meteorites or meteorite-related items you could donate, please contact me and I'll gladly give them away, sell them, or raffle them off to help Gary! Eric Olson has a crusted individual Martian NWA 2987 on eBay right now and will donate the proceeds. Please check it out at http://cgi.ebay.com/NWA-2987-martian-meteorite-crusted-individual-foote_W0QQitemZ230270013735QQihZ013QQcategoryZ3239QQtcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Or: http://tinyurl.com/6rxy3d Also, their grocery store is over 18 miles away from their home and is named Hanneford's. If you'd like to purchase a grocery gift card, you can call Hanneford's at 1 (888) 646-2577. Have them issue the card in Cynthia Foote's name for the Morrisville, Vermont store. The gift card service center will have the card ready for her to pick up. Hanneford's website and info about the gift cards is at http://www.hannaford.com/Contents/Our_Stores/Gift_Cards/index.shtml. Please let me know that you've sent a card and I will make sure CJ knows it is there. Thank you very much! [meteorite-list] Help With Gary Foote's Recovery!
Hello Everybody, I just got off the phone with Gary and his wife, Cynthia (C.J.). As you can read in her post below, their situation is quite challenging right now. If you'd like to help with Gary's recovery, you can send a cash donation directly to his PayPal account at [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you prefer to donate anonymously, you can send to my PayPal at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Anything you can do will be hugely appreciated. Also, if anyone wishes to donate non-cash items to help them get through this, please contact C.J. or myself off-list. I will help out with the details as needed while C.J. tends to Gary. My best, Maria From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Date: Tue, 8 Jul 2008 17:55:55 -0400 Subject: [meteorite-list] OT [sort of] - Gary Foote's Recovery Dear Metorite Fans, My name is CJ Foote. I am writing from Gary's computer because that is where this list's address is. I know that sometime early this year Gary posted here urging everyone to have a PSA test for prostate cancer... well, the men anyway. :) Gary's road to recovery from his prostatectomy has not been a good one. He had surgery on April 29th and, due to complications that have had his health going downhill every day for the last month and a half, he can now only lie on one side, stand for no more than five minutes at a time and cannot sit at all. He is in constant pain and we will be going for emergency exploratory at Dartmouth Hitchcock surgery Thursday to find out what went wrong and hopefully correct it. I am telling you this because we have come to the end of our rope. Our business is destroyed and we are now selling all of Gary's meteorites to help pay bills [We've already sold pretty much everything else already] , despite his pride in being a member of I.M.C.A. and all of the good conversations and friends he has had made here. I can't find a catalog of his collection but most of it is bagged and tagged, so it shouldn't be hard to put one together. Unfortunately I know nothing about prices [Should I auction? Sell directly?, etc.] and Gary is so sedated he doesn't even know what day of the week it is. A good day for him is 1-2 hours of being lucid while the rest of his days are spent in bed or the bathroom. I know Gary's collection is not spectacular, but it is what we have and we will use all of our resources to get him well again. He will likely be diminished by this for life, but our goal is to improve the quality of his life as much as we can. If anyone is interested in any of his meteorites, or would like to see a catalog please let me know and I will work one up post-haste. And if you are a believer please pray for my husband. He is all I have. Sincerely, Cynthia [C.J.] Foote PS - Would anyone like to buy a 1980 Goldwing? He won't be riding again. __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] To the Moon, Alice!
SEND YOUR NAME TO THE MOON WITH NEW LUNAR MISSION WASHINGTON -- NASA invites people of all ages to join the lunar exploration journey with an opportunity to send their names to the moon aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, spacecraft. The Send Your Name to the Moon Web site enables everyone to participate in the lunar adventure and place their names in orbit around the moon for years to come. Participants can submit their information at http://www.nasa.gov/lro, print a certificate and have their name entered into a database. The database will be placed on a microchip that will be integrated onto the spacecraft. The deadline for submitting names is June 27, 2008. 'Everyone who sends their name to the moon, like I'm doing, becomes part of the next wave of lunar explorers,' said Cathy Peddie, deputy project manager for LRO at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. 'The LRO mission is the first step in NASA's plans to return humans to the moon by 2020, and your name can reach there first. How cool is that?' The orbiter, comprised of six instruments and one technology demonstration, will provide the most comprehensive data set ever returned from the moon. The mission will focus on the selection of safe landing sites and identification of lunar resources. It also will study how the lunar radiation environment could affect humans. LRO will also create a comprehensive atlas of the moon's features and resources that will be needed as NASA designs and builds a planned lunar outpost. The mission will support future human exploration while providing a foundation for upcoming science missions. LRO is scheduled for launch in late 2008. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is being built at Goddard. The mission also will be managed at the center for NASA's Explorations Systems Mission Directorate in Washington. Send Your Name to the Moon is a collaborative effort among NASA, the Planetary Society in Pasadena, Calif., and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md. [meteorite-list] In memory of Jim Kriegh
Hello Everyone, I had an idea about how we can all celebrate Jim Kriegh's life. It seems fitting to honor a man who has added so much to so many people's lives. Look how many of us he affected and imagine how many other people there are. We can only hope to meet someone like Jim once in our lives. What do you think about getting together to erect a monument in Jim's park? I'm not talking about a gravestone and we certainly couldn't put a HUGE meteorite there (but how great would that be!) but we could have a regmaglyph-carved stone or a big petrified log with a tasteful plaque attached. More ideas? I don't have an idea what this would cost or if it would even be allowed so please don't start PayPaling. If anyone's interested, please contact me off-list to let me know you're interested and I'll start checking this all out on Monday. We had a death in our family yesterday as well so I am heading out of town until Sunday. I'll contact you when I get back home. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Questions
Walter asked: Also, I have read that some meteoroids travel through space in streams and impact the Earth simultaneously (i.e., they have already broken up before they hit the Earth's atmosphere). How can this be? I would think that once a meteoroid has broken in space (most likely due to impact), minute deviations of the individual pieces in the initial trajectory would translate into ever increasing deviations in the individual piece's trajectory, over time. Unless two pieces were traveling in EXACTLY parallel lines, over time the pieces would be widely dispersed in space. From Robert Haag's 2003 Collection of Meteorites, Page 89: Saint Severin (large at top) 3.1 kilos, and Ensisheim (small, bottom) 85 grams. Amphoterite chondrites (LL6) 20% total iron. These meteorites are both historically and scientifically important - while they fell over 500 years apart, they landed within 100 miles of one another and are chemically and visually identical. In fact, when placed side by side, they appear to be from one contiguous piece. Saint Severin fell June 6, 1966 and Ensisheim fell November 16, 1492. Obviously they come from the same asteroid parent body. To expand on Walter's question -- whether they travel in streams or rubble piles, any idea how these two could fall so many years apart and within such a close proximity of each other? Are there others that have fallen together like Saint Severin and Ensisheim? [meteorite-list] The Man Who Sells the Moon
http://discovermagazine.com/2007/jul/location-location-location 06.14.2007 The Man Who Sells the Moon Dennis Hope has made $9 million selling space property. by Stephen Ornes Dennis Hope, self-proclaimed Head Cheese of the Lunar Embassy, will promise you the moon. Or at least a piece of it. Since 1980, Hope has raked in over $9 million selling acres of lunar real estate for $19.99 a pop. So far, 4.25 million people have purchased a piece of the moon, including celebrities like Barbara Walters, George Lucas, Ronald Reagan, and even the first President Bush. Hope says he exploited a loophole in the 1967 United Nations Outer Space Treaty, which prohibits nations from owning the moon. Because the law says nothing about individual holders, he says, his claim-which he sent to the United Nations-has some clout. It was unowned land, he says. For private property claims, 197 countries at one time or another had a basis by which private citizens could make claims on land and not make payment. There are no standardized rules. Hope is right that the rules are somewhat murky-both Japan and the United States have plans for moon colonies-and lunar property ownership might be a powder keg waiting to spark. But Ram Jakhu, law professor at the Institute of Air and Space Law at McGill University in Toronto, says that Hope's claims aren't likely to hold much weight. Nor, for that matter, would any nation's. I don't see a loophole, Jakhu says. The moon is a common property of the international community, so individuals and states cannot own it. That's very clear in the U.N. treaty. Individuals' rights cannot prevail over the rights and obligations of a state. Jakhu, a director of the International Institute for Space Law, believes that entrepreneurs like Hope have misread the treaty and that the 1967 legislation came about to block property claims in outer space. Historically, the ownership of private property has been a major cause of war, he says. No one owns the moon. No one can own any property in outer space. Hope refuses to be discouraged. And he's focusing on expansion. I own about 95 different planetary bodies, he says. The total amount of property I currently own is about 7 trillion acres. The value of that property is about $100 trillion. And that doesn't even include mineral rights. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Also, please take a look at your collections and see what you could donate to help someone from a true meteorite community devastated by a tornado. It will become part of the raffle. Questions, concerns, comments, inspirations? Please feel free to email me. More details soon. Thank you, Maria -- An update from Steve follows: Sent: Saturday, May 05, 2007 8:47 PM Hello All, It has been a strange day. I have been scouring the internet to try to get a glimpse of my house in Greensburg in pictures and aerial videos. Not to sound selfish, but if my house is gone, there would be less of a need for me to get up there right away... or then again, their might be more of a reason to get up there. My hope has been that since I haven't seen it in any of the really bad pictures, that is a good sign, as the media likes to show off the worst of things. If my house is intact, enough that people could live in it, there is no need for me to be in the house long term, when someone else could occupy it, someone that totally lost their home, or someone involved directly in the relief effort. If anyone cares, my home (or at least the lot) is at 302 S. Maple, Greensburg Kansas 67054. Go to: www.mapquest.comhttp://www.mapquest.com/ and you will see the street lay out of Greensburg. Then go here: http://www.kansas.com/static/video/050507greensburg/http://www.kansas.com/static/video/050507greensburg/ Watch the video, and at the 46 second mark, the street corner nearest the bottom right corner of the frame is Cedar and Wisconsin. My house is one block to the East (right) from that corner, on the south east corner (Maple and Wisconsin). The camera breaks, without panning any further East. My house should be less than a 1/2 block off the screen. The houses start to look better and there are even green leaves on the trees a block from my house. So there is a bit of optimism that my house might be ok. I have some very nice neighbors all around me, one in a mobile home, which is always of greater concern during tornados. As for the fundraiser, I want to support it, 100%, but before I commit to doing anything specific with my time and efforts, I would like to get up there and see what is going on and find out if I can help on site. If someone else could handle the coordination of running the fundraiser and let me make inputs and suggestions, that would be best for now. My suggestions at this point as to how we could help, lean in two directions. First, Barclay College hosted the Meteorite Festival, and now they are the Rescue Shelter for most of Greensburg's families. Of course much of the supplies and volunteers that will help there will be supplied by other people and groups such as the Red Cross. Barclay College is a religious institution, and as such some people might be more inclined to want to route funds that way as they are an on site not-for-profit that - trust me - is giving 100% to this effort. On the other hand, some people might not want to route funds through them because they are religious in nature. In any case, that is one suggestion I would highly make as they would know exactly where to put the funds to the best use. The other might be a little more close to home with some of us. I don't know the situation that Bob and Florence Peck are in, as they are not yet listed on the Red Cross's Safe list. (There is no list of deceased or injured people made public, go figure!). The Peck's live on the north side of Greensburg, as Steve Schoner mentioned, on 308 E. Pennsylvania, and by the video, odds are very good their home took a direct hit. Bob Peck is the son of Ellis Peck, the author of Space Rocks and Buffalo Grass and when he was 18 years old, the job of actually digging the famous 1,000 pound Brenham out of the hole for H.O. Stockewell fell on Bob personally. We (Brenham Meteorite Company) have a lease with Bob and Florence to hunt 160 acres they own in the Brenham Strewnfield (about 100 feet north of where the 1,430 pounder was found). And unfortunately, with the first complete pass over their ground, I was not able to locate any meteorites on their ground. So they have

Re: [meteorite-list] Just to say, Hi once again! (Walter)
Hello Mal, My best wishes are with you and your son for the loss of your wife. Walter's condition was touch and go for a while. He is still struggling but is slowly recovering. Rebekah was injured in the accident and has bounced back like only a kid can. If you search the list archives you can read all about their progress. We receive updates through the list on a regular basis from Walter's wife, Sabrina, a wonderful woman who is very capably handling the family's affairs during this difficult time. I have been collecting donations for the Walter Branch Recovery Fund since the accident and the meteorite community has been incredibly kind and very generous. Walter and his family have a long road ahead of them so I am still actively seeking donations. They need all the support they can get right now so please send your good wishes to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . If you'd like to send him a card, please let me know and I will give you their mailing address off-list. Should you wish to donate funds, you can either do so through my PayPal account to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or regular mail to me at 410 Spring Street, Saline, MI 48176-2101. My best, Maria - Original Message - From: Mal Bishop [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Saturday, March 31, 2007 2:50 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Just to say, Hi once again! Hello everyone once again! After almost a four year absence, I had an irresistible urge to again stroll back to the old neighborhood and see how much or how little it may have changed. It is rather refreshing to see many of the same old names I remember from the past, as well as some new ones, posting, along with some of the same in-family bickering going on that I so vividly remember from the past. Reminds me of one big family sitting around the dinner table with everyone fighting over the last piece of pie! :-) It is really nice to see everyone, or should I say read everyone, once again -- sort of like coming home after a long sojourn in the wilderness with all of its uncertainties and possible dangers, to be back in safer, and more familiar surroundings, albeit maybe a bit tumultuous, and testy at times, but never the less, still a feeling of kinship! I've been absent for the past couple of years from the meteorite list due to several reasons, but principally since my wife, Ava, passed away suddenly and most untimely in an auto accident two years ago this coming Monday, April 2nd. Personally, things were somewhat tough before her death, but at least she was there then to help smooth over the rough terrain, but after her death our one an only child, Gabriel (now eight) was my one and only true concern. Although my heart has always remained true to our wondrous, cosmic friends from above, I had to take a break from collecting, participating on the list, and even subdue to a major degree, my once burning desire and interest in reading and educating myself further on a once most passionate joy in my life. My son came first above all else, and a very unwanted adjustment period ensued with the loss of Gabriel's mother, and my best friend while trying to be both father and mother to Gabriel, and at the same time trying to cope with my own sense of loss and bewilderment. Anyway, I also wanted to mention how shocked I was when I rejoined the list a couple of days ago to hear about Walter Branch being involved in some sort of auto accident of his own! From the little information I've gathered thus far, it sounds as if Walter's daughter was involved in the accident as well, but that she may have faired much better than he had? I was just somewhat shocked and dismayed to read of this for I dealt with Walter on several occasions and found him extremely friendly as well as professional! He was top drawer as was everyone I've dealt with over the years on this list! I just offer up my best wishes and prayers for Walter, his wife, and daughter during this very tragic time in their lives! If anyone has an email address that is current for either Walter or his wife, I would like to directly email them my sympathy, and concern. Also, if anyone would care to do so, I would also like to hear how Walter is progressing! Well, in closing, I'm back to collecting ( already made several purchases from several dealers on our list and from my past), and on top of that, I have a very inquisitive eight year old who just purchased his own VERY FIRST meteorite (actually several :-) ). Hope all of you are doing well personally, and meteoritically! {smile} Best regards to all, Mal __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com

List, I have never been through what Walter is going through. I do, however, have experience with recovery from surgery after surgery after surgery. Help and support comes very early on but then tapers off. Now is the time when Walter needs all the strength and support we can give. I was the second meteorite person he has ever met, John Sinclair was the other. So he was blown away with the signed poster and accompanying check from a group of casual email acquaintances whom he has never met. Way to go guys. As expected we talked meteorites, and hunting meteorites, and meteorite people, and meteorite news etc, etc. We might even get him out to the Tucson show one of these years. His daughter is doing fine, out playing with her friends. The young heal fast. I asked how his wife was doing and he said she has been incredible. All the financial stuff and other things that Walter used to deal with she has taken care of completely. She is there every day and Walter considers himself luck to have her. Unfortunately she was not there during my visit so I did not get to meet her. As far as Walter himself goes he is getting better. He doesn't have much of an appetite and it was obvious after a couple hours that he was getting tired. While I was there the head of the rehab center dropped by and said that as soon as the surgeons cleared him he was headed over to rehab. That is expected sometime this week. After that the rehab people will torture him until he can get in and out of bed and walk. A compound fracture of his upper right leg makes that difficult now. Once rehab is done it will be home to his own bed and family for further healing. That isn't the end though because there will be further surgery required in the coming months. All in all he looked really good for someone who nearly died at the scene of the accident. -- Eric Olson 7682 Firethorn Dr Fayetteville, NC 28311 http://www.star-bits.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Larry's Holbrook Holy Grail Find
Hello All, Even though I was there, I can't wait to read Larry's article in Meteorite Magazine! As you all know by now, after we left Holbrook we spent the rest of the week hunting Franconia and Gold Basin. For the additional five days I was with him and that stone (when we weren't hunting) we looked at it and talked about it and looked at it again. We weighed it at two post offices, shared babysitting duties, looked at it again and talked about it again. It never got old. It isn't just the hunt and the find that's exciting for me, I also hunt vicariously through everyone in the field. The stories make me want to hunt and the cycle (sickness) continues. Larry failed to mention that he shares a birthday with Sikhote Alin! I guess not everyone shouts from the rooftops like someone else I know insert big goofy grin here. Happy Birthday Larry! [meteorite-list] Joel Schiff Gift Campaign
Dear List, A reminder about the Joel Schiff gift campaign... Most of you have heard the wonderful news that Meteorite Magazine will now live on! During the time that we all thought we had lost Meteorite for good, a number of us put our heads together to discuss what to do for Joel and this is what we came up with: In thanks for, and recognition of eleven years' hard work bringing us such a great magazine, we are collecting funds that will be used to purchase a special meteorite gift for Joel Schiff. We have just the perfect thing in mind. If you'd like to get involved, here's what you can do: Send a cash gift via PayPal or check to Maria Haas, who is in charge of collecting and tabulating. My email and PayPal account is: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I can accept credit cards, debit cards and bank account payments through my PayPal. Those who are uncomfortable with or unable to use PayPal are welcome to contact me for my mailing address to send a gift an alternative way (cash, check, money order, etc.). If everyone who has enjoyed M donated $10 or more, we'd be able to acquire a stellar gift for Joel. This would mean a lot to him while he is recovering from his illness. Geoff will design a one-of-a-kind certificate, on behalf of the meteorite community, to go along with the gift and we'll notify you of the nature of the gift. We should keep our discussions about this off of lists as much as possible to reduce the chance of spoiling the surprise. Those of you who so kindly donated their subscription refund to the cause need not be concerned about interruption of your subscription as your funds still remain with the magazine. Of course, if you were interested in making a cash donation for the same amount your refund would have been we would cheerfully use it to purchase his gift. :) We don't want anyone to miss the chance to get involved so please pass this along to every meteorite enthusiast you know! Thanks to those of you who have already sent donations. Please feel free to contact either of us with questions. Re: [meteorite-list] What great hobby!! + microwaves to detectmeteorites?
Frankly, I don't know what it was but it definitely wasn't a meteorite (or magnetite). I save most of my really good looking wrongs to remind me not to pick them up again. I have tried dragging one magnet from each hip and unless you walk in absolutely straight lines and bend over perfectly straight, you end up dragging one magnetic mess that snags every piece of loose dead foliage you encounter. Also, there are small risks dragging even one. Do you know what being clotheslined is? It's where you don't see a wire, string, or similar something that is strung about neck high. You walk into it (or drive a dirt bike through it...different story) and it kind of trips you from your head instead of your feet. Sometimes the magnet you drag catches little branches and weeds and it's not a big deal. One day I was walking along and the top half of my body was violently pulled back - just like I was clotheslined. I was not hurt but I was reeeally surprised. When I turned around and saw what my magnet was attached to I thought I was just really wound up in a little branch. I pulled and pulled. I had been clotheslined by a lone piece of fence sticking up in the middle of a field! I got a good laugh out of it and had others been watching, they would have too. Anyway, I'm kinda past how stupid I look in my quest. This year one of my farmers is letting me put magnets on strings to drag behind his plow. He has never spent much time clearing his land of rocks so this may be interesting. Now while we may just pick up all those tractor parts he's lost over the years, we may also hit a jackpot. I once found a piece of farly fine grained rock that stuck to a magnet and even looked like it had flowlines...but it turned out that it was dark all throughout and it had crystals. I might give up on the metal detector and start going places where I can just walk fast and keep my eyes on the ground. I never seem to find anything of interest with the detector and it takes me so long to cover even a small area thoroughly. I'll have to try that string dragging idea. I know you can get really powerful neodymium magnets on E-bay. If I tied a bunch of them to my belt loops as I walked that should easily pick up small pieces, although I'm sure I'd look like a total goof! Happy hunting! Dear Graham, Unfortunately, I am unable to swing a detector right now and haven't been able to for some time. All of my hunting is done by sight and I do have a telescoping magnet on a stick (thanks to Mark Bostick) and hard drive magnets on a string that I drag behind me as I walk. I think I'd be pretty frustrated if I dug for five minutes to reach a piece of scrap metal but I sure can't wait for the chance! About a month ago while I was out hunting I came across this curious little 63 gram stone slightly sticking out of the ground. When I got my trusty magnet near it it went click and my heart jumped. I had been taking artifact pictures and GPS coordinates all day so as luck would have it, I now only had two good batteries with me. I had to abandon an in situ picture but was able to get GPS coordinates before that died as well. I was at the backside of 500 acres so I stuck it in my pocket and pointed myself home. I must have taken 20 pictures of it on and off the scale before I headed twards the saw to window it. I pulled it back from the blade and had to remind myself about someday. Someday it'll be real and I'll be doing the chicken dance all over my basement. I have lightly discussed with another listmember about using GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar). Perhaps someone could offer some info on how beneficial that is in the field. I hate it when the detector goes off and I dig for 5 minutes to find a pipe or something. I wonder if it's possible to use microwaves to detect meteorites? Conductive metal will backscatter microwaves and can be detected by an appropriate instrument (this is how radar works). Perhaps it's possible to send a beam of microwaves into the ground over a large area and see what comes back. If you use a fairly short wavelength you might be able to resolve images of what's under the ground. Short wavelength microwaves would probably be needed to detect a chondrite because long wavelengths would probably not couple to the metal very well and be reflected. An iron however should show up quite easily. The only problem with short wavelengths is that they are absorbed pretty quickly by water so they would have trouble penetrating wet ground. It would work great in a sandy desert though I'm sure. [meteorite-list] RE: Microwave my meteorites?
Hi Guys, I just know that the acres of farm fields I have access to has meteorites just waiting for a meteorite detector/detectress, and an able-bodied shoveler/shoveltress and I would love to put together plans to be that such person someday. I'm not sure I'm ever going to be a 10' hole-digger but I can aspire to 3' for a nice prize found in my very own strewnfield (yes, I'll find one). After I find a strewnfield then I'll consider 10' but only with digging equipment. Does Whites still put out such a detector? (I could look on their website but don't know exactly what to look for.) Does your neighbor get used model$? How about display model$? We have to consider light weight if that is a possiblity. I know I'm getting way ahead of myself but I want to be ready! As it happens, Arizona Keith is the same person I was discussing GPR with and have been leaving him to recuperate quietly. I have trouble recuperating quietly...can you tell? Date: Mon, 11 Apr 2005 08:52:03 -0600 Dear Maria; My neighbor is a white's detector salesman and a few years back he went to Odessa and hunted the field briefly in the 99 degree heat. His guide was none other than James Williams, Rocks from Space page 136. Ron used the top of the line two piece deep penetrating unit White's had out at the time. The plan was to search 3-10 feet deep for items that the regular detector crowd had missed. Between the heat and the pipelines in the area The deep seeking unit did not produce any meteorites in the four hours of searching. Ron did find some real nice odessa's in Mr. Williams collection though. Ron felt with a better weather condition that he would have done much better but noted that Odessa is an old oil boom town and there is a great deal of metal around. Digging 10 foot holes for pipe thread protectors would not be productive so maybe the area would have to be a bit more primitive to have the deep penetrating radar be more successful. RE: [meteorite-list] Are Meteorites For Boys Only?
Dear Hunters and Huntresses, Collectors and Collectrexes, I have been collecting rocks, minerals and fossils my whole life. I was also the kid who constantly came home with pockets full of rocks - mostly fossils. My mother (who loves science) used to throw my smaller ones in the driveway and my dad would try to pick them up (if he recognized them). Nature? Nurture? My pepper spray and I are not opposed to taking field trips alone and have gone on quite a few. This year I have also been on field trips with list members (Atkins, Freeman, and the Park Forest anniversary group). I spent eight hours last Sunday hiking with list member Larry Atkins looking for stone Indian artifacts (another one of my collections). David Freeman was also kind to leave me some incredible Wyoming artifacts when he visited in June. No, I don't currently have any women friends who would hunt rocks with me. They think my rock and meteorite collecting is odd :) At this moment, I have a 153 lb flight-oriented diabase basalt wrong in my living room - a long story but it spawned a meteorite collector some years ago (me!). My meteorite collection is housed in a glass shelving unit that I call The Shrine, the inside of my home is lined with rocks, I have buckets and buckets of rocks in my basement, there are rocks in my Jeep, I have my own saw, cut and prepare my own stones, and every rock that fits under my microscope has even though I don't always know what I am looking at. I have plenty of the faceted expensive stones and no matter how I am dressed or where I am going I would not hesitate filling up my purse with interesting rocks. Girly? Kinda. I even have neighborhood rock groupies - kids who drop by to see what's new in my collection. Only one is a girl but she drags girlfriends who don't care about rocks to my house sometimes. Last Halloween I had a bowl of candy and a bowl of rocks for the kids to choose from. For me, learning about and holding a terrestrial or space rock and looking up at the stars is probably the closest I will ever get to feeling what forever really is and means.
