I would not do it like that again, these days I would use lpeg, but
it was not nearly as complicated to do it in tex macros as I had
  anticipated.
A bit off-topic:
suppose that I , while I'm making format , I need to trace macro definitions
(\edef,\xdef,\def,\let and eventually alias like \let\define\def, so
also \define too,...)
This can be do only hacking web source , or not ?

  If you set
\tracingassigns=1
\tracingrestores=1
you will get a dump in the log of all assignments (and that
includes definitions) as well as restores.

You will not get the full definitions of macros though, just the
first 32 tokens. If you want the full definition, you really have
  to hack the web source.

ok, I suppose it.
Hacking the web source should be also permit to trace primitive of luatex .

Thank you very much

Re: [NTG-context] Software manual template request

2008-04-01 Thread luigi scarso
Until now we have two way to document sources:
for *tex file
texmfstart texexec --luatex --modules somefile.tex

for lua
texmfstart texexec --luatex --ctx=x-ldx somefile.lua

(both may need some setup to work)
Actually this is the quickest way to have the more accurate dev. documentation,
and I don't think we need something else .

  If you say so ...

% engine=luatex

\startluacode
function add_ties (line) return line:gsub(' ','~') end
\stopluacode

\def\startfiltered
  {\ctxlua {callback.register('process_input_buffer', add_ties)}}
\def\stopfiltered
  {\ctxlua {callback.register('process_input_buffer', nil)}}

\starttext
\startfiltered
Thus, I came to the conclusion that the designer of a new system
must not only be the implementer and first large||scale user; the
designer should also write the first user manual.
\stopfiltered
\stoptext

Notice how it breaks only at hyphens? If you think that is because
those are the only valid breakpoints, you are actually slightly wrong:
there are still 'normal' spaces between 'system' and 'must' and between
'the' and 'designer' (because EOL is converted to a space *after*
  reading in the line buffer).

The lua function is _much_ too simple. It will happily convert '\ '
  into '\~', $a = 2~$ into $a~=~2~$, and \TEX is into \TEX~is.

ok, many thanks.

I have already done it once (perl and ruby added to the CD, and
formats generated), and one could be prepared at/for the conference.
However, I have no idea how sensible the formats are (if you prepare a
live CD with slightly different versions of pdfTeX for different
platforms - probably that's not going to work?) And luatex should then
  put its cache into temp.
What about an image to run with a virtual machine ?

PS: but the main problem with CD is that you cannot update it, so it
probably gets old before you even manage to burn it
Are you sure ?
pdftex is frozen (almost), .
I have a production with a context 4 years old.

  mars
A very nice subject to discuss here at pdf/a conference with Leonard Rosenthal
(why use a pdf format for archiving, and in the same moment push mars?
mars can be XML-PDF-XML)
But I did'nt want to do that.
I have talkd last year in italy with Olaf Drümmer, he said the mars is
still an experiment .
From my point of view xml is better for long term archiving.

Then it's easy: it is a ghostscript bug.
or maybe a xpdf bug,

I guess not - these 3 parameters are AFAIK part no., title and page
no., and it's called automatically for the ToC entry, so I don't
know how I could replace #2 with author: #2

i.e. alternative in \setuplist is only for defining a different
format for the ToC line, not for changing the *content* of it.

Probably I must utilize that, too, but it doesn't solve my problem on
  its own.

Well, the easiest solution is: use a font that does have a full set of
Greek characters. The TeXGyre fonts have some Greek characters, but
they are not really finished and are not usable right now.
I need
an opentype like helvetica , plus some times and courier;
ie
\usetypescript[postscript]
is ok.

You're
trying to fake characters which are not in the font; this is
unsatisfying from an esthetical point of view and hackish as for the
produced pdf (not cut-and-paste, no search etc.).
yes I know, but actually i need only print, and it's low/mid quality.
Very raw, I agree.

If it's
important for you: for several months now, I have been using a version
of my Greek module which works perfectly with mkiv; so far, I haven't
seen the necesity to upload it, but I could do it any time (after some
  clean-up).
yes, of course.

Just download in opentype dir,

Here's a list of fonts with full Greek support (with some links) that
are sure to work in mkiv:

Gentium (this one looks good when you mix it with a sans as Latin

  all the GFS fonts http://www.greekfontsociety.gr/pages/en_typefaces1.html
  Minion (comes with Adobe Reader)
  Old Standard http://www.thessalonica.org.ru/en/fonts.html
Recent versions of Times New Roman
  Asteria http://www.ellopos.net/elpenor/greek-texts/greek-fonts.asp

If all you need is characters with the acute accent (monotoniko),
you could also look at Adobe Myriad (comes with Adobe Reader) and
  numerous other fonts.

This release will also be available from CTAN soon, and it will be

 Hi Taco,

I have two questions/problems with the new release:

 1. for my linux box, I just grabbed the linux tarball, but the

I have build mpost from src (I always prefer to compile from source)

No, about cont-en.lua. But l-table.lua is integrated in that file. It's a
 merge of several lua-files.
Search on

luat-tmp.lua

luatools.lua

Also my last distro 2008-04-18 has not this file.

Ah yes, I rember: there are 2~3 tex files in base/
with this problem.
I have a list, but it's not update to last context distro (I will do soon) .
I believe that with file command (under linux) one can discover them.

Perhaps with a preprocessing (ctx) file that runs iconv, but luatex
 itself wants UTF-8, full stop.
Just for sure : no BOM problem ? I remember something about this in mkii

  \stopxmlsetups
(with a final } )
! LuaTeX error ./toks-ini.lua:291: attempt to index local 'tok' (a nil value).

but untestedand that kind of stuff is pretty low on my agenda now that
we have utf; best convert you rsource using mtxrun --script babel
ok (to study mtx-babel.lua) ,
but I didn't want to convert my xml source for only fews chars
(in the end, I will do it because it's semantically wrong) .
Token remapping should be a quick way to fix this kind of problem .
it works, but not under \startxmlsetups ...\stopxmlsetups

 There is ant http://ant.berlios.de/

There are still some areas where you need a programmable system, even
trivia like chapter dependant running titles (in ConTeXt: headertexts).
Isn't indesign programmable too ?
I know people who use it in an automatic workflow for db publishing

I forword an email to the professor.
it discuss some of the points together with some examples.

\parshape is not enough for arbitary page layout.
\parshape can help for text flow around other elements, hence for
layout of a page.
What do you mean with
\parshape is not enough for arbitary page layout ?
There are other macros/ tools for page layout
as otr for example.

columnset cannot solve most of the problems:)
Do you have some examples ?

if you want advanced page layout justification, TeX is not sufficient.

What do you mean with advanced ?
Do you have som examples ?

Because the problem was about installing GHC (an Haskell compiler) on osX
 with macports tool.
Haskel language is requested as a dependancy for Pandoc.
no no, there was a misunderstand.
What I mean is : it' very hard to define that a subject if off topic

Having heard Linux is, amongst other things, far more stable
I might be tempted to play with it and progressively build some
experience with it, master the beast and then switch some
applications, amongst which ConTeXt, to it.

As I presently don't know a thing about Linux, which distribution
 do you recommend ?
I have played with fedora /red-hat, opensuse/suse, debian, ubuntu, slackware .
All goods, actually I'm using ubuntu.
Maybe fedora/opensuse with kde can be confortable for you .

BTW, I don't use tex from these distro, I always put all files under
/opt/luatex , compiling when necessary ;
it's in a someway distro-independent.
