[NTG-context] Can modes be used for content control?

For example, someone wants to write at least two versions of a book managed from a single file. So, e.g., we may have a) abridged content b) unabridged content - includes a) c) abridged content + translation d) unabridged content + translation [:] One can author and organize this in XML - pre-ConteXt - but perhaps one prefers to write in ConTeXt (take advantage of shortcuts etc.). So maybe \defineparagraphs[unabridged] \defineparagraphs[abridged] \defineparagraphs[translation] Then one authors the complete work in a single project, but you can produce a variety of versions, depending on the mode chosen: \definemode[unabridged] etc. Can one do this in context? Re: [NTG-context] using modeset
Jan Willem Flamma schrieb am 11.06.2020 um 10:41: Dear list members, I write training manuals and use the Modes mechanism a lot to create documents at various competency levels using a single set of source files. So far the manuals have been written in English but now a separate Dutch translation has to be created. It is important that the two manuals are setup similarly so the section/subsection numbers and question numbers are the same in the English manual and the Dutch manual. Note: I do not intend to create a manual that has the English and Dutch text at opposite sides (as can be done using streams) I’m keen to continue using a single set of source files and thought it would be best to simply type the translated sections and subsections just below the original English sections and subsections using modeset. This gives me the option of creating an English case and a Dutch case. Within this two cases I would still apply all sorts of other modes using \startmode and \doifmode. Duplication is unavoidable but it would make sense to try and re-use the existing structural elements such as \startsection \startsubsection \placefigure etc as much as possible. After all, only the title and caption text needs to be translated. I tried doing this but in the case of \startchapter using a \doifmode but the PDF bookmarks text is not correctly generated. You need \enabledirectives[references.bookmarks.preroll] in your setup files to get the correct text in the bookmarks. I also tried placing a figure in between 2 modeset cases but this does not work. See attached .tex file. A alternative to modes is the selector mechanism to choose between different arguments. \setupinteraction[state=start] \placebookmarks \enabledirectives[references.bookmarks.preroll] \defineselector [language] [max=2,n=1] \startmode[en] \setupselector[language][n=1] \stopmode \startmode[nl] \setupselector[language][n=2] \stopmode \starttext \placecontent \section{\select{language}{English section title}{Dutch section title}} \startplacefigure[title=\select{language}{English float title}{Dutch float title}] \externalfigure[dummy] \stopplacefigure \stoptext Finally in the attached PDF below, I noticed that a double space appears depending on the position of the text and curly bracket. Is this intended? Yes because you add spaces between the braces and the text which appear in the output. \startmodeset [...] { ... } [...] { ... } \stopmodeset Questions: * Is the modeset mechanism indeed the best way forward or are there better ways to achieve the desired outcome? * How can I re-use the existing ConTeXt code as much as possible and still have the correct English and Dutch title and caption text for all the structural elements and floats. I would like to be able to typeset a component differently depending on whether it is passed directly to texexec or whether I am processing the complete product. For instance, in each technical note, I would like a title page, table of contents, list of abreviations, and list of references generated if I typeset the component separately. Conversely, when processing the product TechNotes I want a master table of contents, list of abbreviations and list of references generated for the set of components. Is it appropriate to want to do this or have I misunderstood the role of projects, products and components entirely. [NTG-context] bibliography again: “von” and “van”
The default way to diplay (inverted) names with “von” and “van” is “von Goethe” and “van Halen” in in-text references and “von Goethe, Johann Wolfgang” and “van Halen, Edward”. The problem with this is that while AFAIK the Dutch “van Halen” means that one of his ancestors came ”from” a place/city called “Halen” in German names the “von” is always a sign of nobility. Even long before monarchy and nobility was abolished in Germany by the revolution of 1919 you would not have talked about “von Goethe” but simply “Goethe”–so in a reference it would be “(Goethe 1774)” and “Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von” in the publications list, but still “(van Halen 1984)” and “van Halen, Edward”. It would be nice if you could switch between two modes while invoking the citation. I have not yet discovered where this order is defined. [NTG-context] no leavevmode
Why is there not implemented in \subsection a \leavevmode at the end of it? Here a minimal example showing that starting with the first word in an \hbox encounters vertical mode. Thus requiring a \leavevmode to put it on line with the following text. Whereas not starting with an \hbox does an implicite switch to horizontal mode. I can imagine that this behaviour could be confusing for users not well versed in the different behaviour of the horizontal and vertical modes. Therefore my question: Wouldn't it be wise to implement that \leavevmode? \startsubsection[title=TEST] \hbox{abc} def\crlf ghi jkl xyz \stopsubsection dr. You can’t nest modes in \startmode ... \stopmode. I don’t know what are the limitations of \doifmode. Maybe it helps to use additional grouping with {}, \bgroup .. \egroup or \start .. \stop. In my courses notes, I insert some blocks (named « Complement » in the minimal exemple below) when in « Professor » mode. This works fine, as shown in the first « \beginComplement … \endComplement » of my example below. Maybe you can work with buffers or (ConTeXt) blocks (the latter were recently discussed here, it’s a quite unknown mechanism). [NTG-context] Can I simplify this to some sort of logic so it scales better?

I was wondering what would be a good approach to simplify it. I want to make sure that one and only one of these modes is active and that if no mode is entered on the command line the mode is EN. Hi Gerben, I think this may do the trick: \doiftext{\env{ml}} {\mainlanguage[\env{ml}]} \starttext Document main language: \startmodeset [**en] {English} [**es] {Spanish} [**de] {German} [**nl] {Dutch} [**ru] {Russian} \stopmodeset% . \stoptext Of course, "--arguments=ml=nl" would be the right option to pass the language from the command line.
