[nysbirds-l] Two Tri-colored Herons - Dune Rd, East Quogue
A short while after re-locating the Tri-colored Heron reported earlier, in the shallow ditch slightly east of original location, the bird flew north, into the marsh. Continuing along Dune Rd, heading west, I stopped just west of Dolphin Lane, and saw a second Tri-colored Heron. In comparing photos, one has a distinctive red eye and breeding white plum on back of head, while the first one had yellow eyes, no breeding plum and was a softer, more washed out brown/gray back of neck, back and wings. The second bird also flew north, into the Marsh. Patience may be required to relocated either or both birds. Photos of both are being added to my eBird submission. Re: [nysbirds-l] Brown Pelican and Golden-crowned Sparrow still around?
As far as the Montauk Pelican info, I received a excellent photo and report late Sunday evening, of an immature Brown Pelican - with a metal right leg band(not readable, but clearly visible), seen Sunday afternoon on the Town of Southampton Commercial Fishing Dock. I believe this matches the description of the Montauk bird. An extensive search this morning - 8am-11am- of that area - from west Shinnecock Inlet to Post La Bridge, Quogue - was not successful in relocating the bird. Various docks and coves on the “mainland” side of the bay were also checked. A word of caution- there is possibly another breach of the dunes again near the commercial dock. Equipment was attempting to pile more sand on the oceans side, however two hours prior to high tide, the waves were already cresting over the dune, and spilling on to Dune Rd. Re: [nysbirds-l] Does the Hermit Thrush still breed on Long Island???
Having just returned from Hunters Garden in Eastport, both Mike Higgiston and I heard our FOY Hermit Thrush. (We were there between 8-10am). I believe Steve Biasetti and Tom Moran heard at least one Hermit Thrush there yesterday. We also heard and saw Steve and Tom’s Arcadian Flycatcher, and had excellent views of a Black-billed Cuckoo. Other normal residents were there, including Ovenbirds, Scarlet Tanager and Pewee. All birds were seen and heard between the water tower turn off and the open area, along the dirt road. The road in is extremely driveable, at least to the water tower turn off, with minor potholes and packed sand/dirt. Ticks, however, are still present, even on the sparse grasses of the dirt road. Rounding out the morning, we saw a Yellow-crowned Night Heron in the marsh off the tiny boat basin, West End Ave., East Quogue.
