Rick,
Nice shot and captures the feel of Seattle very well.
I like the ferry as a 'big boat' here and am drawn in by the lights on
top and at the vehicle entrance.
The sky is Seattle, and the clouds touching the top mountain of
Olympic pensula on the right seals the deal.

Re: Peso Longlac wood church

Thanks Rick.
It sits out on a jut of land off the Hwy at the edge of the lake. I
sent this to one of my old bosses, he has done a lot of survey
research in this area for the natives to wards a claim against
Ontario Hydro, and the shots he sent me from 2002 show the church in
good condition.

Amazing what 4ish years of neglect and harsh winters can do.

PESO - Schwinn Continental

2007-11-21 Thread Scott Loveless
Hey, gang.
http://picasaweb.google.com/sdloveless/Continental/photo#5134351606000545906

Picked up the bike last week, along with a slightly newer Continental
that's way too big for me. Just after tearing it apart I realized I
should have taken some before pictures to go with the inevitable
after pics. This was intended to be a documentary photograph, but it
has since grown on me. Not sure if I like the photo or just the subject
matter, so I thought I'd let you guys (and gals) have a look.

K100D, 200 ISO, DA 1-55, tripod. Tinkered with it a bit in Picasa -
sharpened, slightly desaturated, corrected the color, and I might have
played with the contrast a little. I tied the string around it to check
the alignment of the rear triangle.

OT: Microsoft Access

2007-11-21 Thread Mark Roberts
Having a software problem and hoping someone can offer help.

I have a photo database in Microsoft Access 97 which I wrote years ago
and have still been using. When I bought a new computer this summer I
reinstalled Microsoft Office from my original disc. Everything runs
fine except Access, which won't start and gives me a message Microsoft
Office can't start because there is no license for it on this machine.
Damned odd because I do, and have always had, a legal install disc, one
that has worked in the past whenever I needed it.

Uninstalling/reinstalling didn't help.

I can extract all the data in the tables through other software, but
I'd really like to be able to run my original database.

Any suggestions or hacks on offer?

Peso Barbie loves cash

2007-11-21 Thread David J Brooks
Back on Nov 4th our farm held a bit of a funday for the hunter and
dressage riders, that started out small, but turned into an all day
fund raiser for breast cancer.

The hunters did two dressage tests, and the dressage riders did two
small over fence courses. Between the entry fees, the tack sale and
raffles and silent auction, we managed to raise over $3500. Not bad
for 44 horse people and friends.

We had a special entry in the jump class:

http://picasaweb.google.com/pentkon52/General/photo#5135337090728105938

This is Cash, a black lab, and Barbie as the rider. He just went were
he felt like, but i managed two photos.

Nikon D1, 18-70 3.2-4.5 and SB80 DX flash.

I have a link to the rest of the photos on the site should you be so
inquisitive.

Are you referring to the small triangle of brown in the lower right

If cloned out, what color would replace it?

OT - workbench

For the record, I do not have a fancy workshop. I have a workbench I
built about 12 years ago shoved up against a dividing wall that
separates an ancient toilet from the rest of the basement. (Parts were
scavenged from the tank to fix the one upstairs, so it doesn't even
work, damnit.) I spent two hours a few days ago cleaning off the bench

It's a Continental II. Black. Probably '78 or '79. ~66cm seat tube,
which is the largest size they offered those years. Stand over height
is probably 36 or 37. My guess is that it was left outside for a very
long time. The frame is intact, but all the moving parts will need an
overhaul. Want it?

My Schwinn World has a 62cm seat tube with a 35 stand over, and it

Howdy, folks,

Well, in a sense, my K10D just paid for itself and the *ist D and a
couple of lenses, to boot. I shot a really big three-day amateur auto
racing event this weekend, which I do every year. This is my second or
third year shooting it on digital. Only this year did I really get into
the digital swing of things, apparently ... I managed to take nearly
3,000 exposures home, not even counting the ones I deleted in the camera.

The last time I shot film, it cost me about US$ 20 per 24-exposure roll
for the film, developing, and medium res scanning. Had I been shooting
film, last weekend would've cost me around US$ 2,500 in film and
associated costs. But it wouldn't have ... on film, I'd never have
tripped the shutter that many times. I think the most I ever shot in a
four-day event on film was about 50 36 exposure rolls, which is 40% of
3,000 exposures. And I more commonly shot around 30 rolls of 36 each in
a 4-day event. :-)

I finally find that I'm doing more experimenting with digital as I'm
finally getting it through my head that there's no significant
additional cost per exposure. I'm taking shots I would never have tried
before. I'm taking several of each shot so that hopefully I'll get an
acceptable one. Tons of things that I'd never have been able to afford
on film.

That said, the chore of culling and post-processing 3,000 images is
nothing to sneeze at. :-)

Thanks,

Re: Paid For

I'm still paying off several Dslr's .LOL

I do however find my self shooting my horse shows as if I was still
using film. Just a few fences of the riders on course. Two, maybe
three if the course is set up photographer friendly.
I know several of the other people around here, machine gun and shoot
every fence, good or bad, and galloping shots as well. Thats got to
add up, cause they keep them all and try and sell them as a show day
CD.

Just can't seem to justify doing that, even for digital.

 Thanks,

That's one of the best cormorant photos we've had here. What's the
building in the background? It looks like #1 Canada Square in Canary
Wharf, but without the surrounding towers.

I had no idea that the
Cormorant was the official bird of the PDML,

I believe it's also the Official Bird of the Internet, and in the
running to be the Official Non-Mammal of the London Olympics 2012,
competing with the haddock. I know which one my money's on.

OT: The Cormorant Cure

2007-11-21 Thread pnstenquist
Speaking of cormorants (don't we always:-), some Wisconsin fisherman came up
with the ultimate solution: Three Little Pigs. Seems there was a huge cormorant
population on an island in Lake Michigan, and they were wreaking havoc on the
local fishing grounds. Apparently, none of the natural enemies of the cormorant
live on the island, so the birds multiplied exponentially. Well, some
enterprising fishermen brought three baby pigs to the island, built them a
shelter and left them to suffice for themselves. They dined on cormorant eggs.
Apparently, they dined heartily for quite some time before the environmental
nazis figured out what was going on. Of course they had a fit, but by then the
cormorant population was well under control. Less photo ops for PDMLers, more
fish for Wisconsin anglers.

Re: Asking about stock agencies

2007-11-21 Thread Cotty
Boris, I am registered with Alamy. I did it when I was on the staff of a
large company, not being paid enough. I thought it would earn me extra
income. I only have a few images submitted - but then it was all change
at work, and my staff position was made redundant.

I am now a managing director of my own company, and things are a lot
better financially. Hence, I haven't added to my Alamy selection.

I gather that to make a decent living at it, you have to be submitting
on the order of dozens of shots per week. Alamy pays less than other
agencies (they take a bigger chunk) but the arrangement can be more
casual. I kind of liked that idea, seeing as I was not a full time
photographer. Like with mosts things, the more you put into it, the more
return you will see.

To get an idea of saleable images, look at those that sell, and discover
their attributes.

You won't be buying any Ferraris from the income.

I would say, get to know a small agency, get to know them well, and be
extremely prolific - and be consistently good with it. The there's the
remote chance your pics will sell. It's a flooded market - and more and
more it looks like one-off royalty-free is the name of the (poorly-paid)
game. People want something for nothing these days, and that spells a
hard time for any creative.

Good luck!
