Another wreck, maybe I'll get another photo credit

2009-10-28 Thread Larry Colen
There's nothing quite like gettng caught in stopped traffic coming
home, not being able to see around the bend, but being able to see the
flashing lights of a bunch of emergency vehicles that seem to be in
front of your house.

I parked in the pullout 100 meters up the road from my house, walked
home, grabbed the K20D, 18-250 and promaster flash (the af540 is
waiting on parts at criscam). I found that what worked was to open
the lens up all the way, take a test shot and crank the ISO up to
whatever it took.

The kid, who had just gotten his license, was driving. Something
jumped in front of him, he swerved, lost it and ended up on his
side. It's kamikazi deer season, so that's my guess.

A much smaller set than last time, now that I have a better idea of
what the papers want.

I'm afraid that my model is nowhere near as attractive as the recently

I did a photoshoot today in my backyard studio. Garry saw my post on a

It was my first real shoot using my backyard studio. I.e. with the
clear plastic canopy over my dancefloor.

The first three shots are ambient light, just using the clear plastic
as a diffuser, the last two are with strobes.

We were having problem with glare, so I sent Zab out to get some
makeup while we reviewed some of the pictures. Looking at the final
shots, I have a lot to learn about makeup.

We started out the set using Home Depot Canvas tarps as backdrops,
then I turned 90 degrees to use the redwoods as a background. They
  worked a lot better.

Stan,

Good luck with the repair, I hope any separation from your equipment is short.

You will like the 60-250. It was on my list for so long while I
waited for it to come out that my wife happily let me buy it just to
stop me saying how useful it would be in this particular situation
(included a 3 month round the world holiday with 9,500 images taken -
I know, I wasn't really trying).

I skipped the K20 as not enough of a change from the K10, but I like the K7.

Leon

2009/10/28 Stan Halpin s...@stans-photography.info:

Anyway, as I meant to say in my previous blank message, thanks Leon. I am
afraid you are right about the camera-lens interaction being the possible
cause of the problem. One difference between the two bodies is that the one
where I have the problem has the Battery Grip attached, the other doesn't.
Will try it all again without grip before I send anything away.
And thanks for the K-7 thought. But next on my list is the 60-250. Once I
recover from that, I may consider the K-7.

Well I didn't take any photos, but I did get a good enough look at
said lovelies to know that they are very real.

This is a situation where the right choice of top has complemented
  her
  assets rather well.

Pose and camera angle add to the illusion. It'd be 10 out of 10 if it
  didn't
  have the blown highlight.

Not that I disagree, but what is it about the blown highlight that
 detracts?

The highlights are very specular, and the way digital captures them makes
them garish. The transition is so abrupt, like falling off a cliff. You lose
the texture and distort the modeling of the face ... and other areas. Look
at the right arm near the elbow. It looks like the forearm is just laying
 there detached from the model.

It's not a criticism of the photo. The way digital handles blown highlights
is just one of the realities of the medium that every photographer is going
 to have to deal with.

This is a well composed, well posed photo. It does more than just present
 the obvious assets.

I remember earlier in the thread you expressed the wish you'd had a large
 diffuser to soften the light.

And I got the impression these model shoots are organized by a photo club of
some kind. If you can't afford the diffuser yourself, maybe the club could
invest in one for group shoots.

But, if this was a workshop you paid to participate in, whoever organized
the workshop should have had that diffuser available.

Softer light would have helped make the highlights less specular and would
have pushed the photo over the top.

10 out of 10 or maybe even goes to 11.

Good points all.

This was the free form session at the end of the workshop where we
were basically pointed at the models, handed some lights reflectors
and told put what you've been shown over the last day and a bit and
see what you can come up with

I admit I need more practice. Oh well. I'm willing to suffer for this art.

:-D

Re: NAS

2009-10-28 Thread Gasha

I'm planning to implement one NAS for my storage also.

Custom made, and probably with replication over network to another NAS.
If you have some unused older PC, with ports for SATA disks, then you
can install Openfiler. Freeware.

Otherwise, i have heard that Drobo, works good.

NAS is attractive, because you can hide your loud HDD disks in another
room, well ventilated, backed up by UPS. And leave only laptop or PC
with one disk as front-end workstation.

Hard disks don't like frequent power up/down. So it is better to split
these functions, and you can get quiet living room during night :)

Here is a site that you may find interesting:
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/
Performance difference between various NAS solutions can be very big, and it is worth considering before buying one, especially if you want it to use for photo archiving. I believe that Synology, QNAP and Thecus are leaders now, with Synology having arguably the best UI for management.

Thanks for that link, Sylwester. A good resource.

For any Mac users here using or about to use a NAS, I have some advice.
If the NAS offers native Apple Filer Protocol as a connection method,
use that in preference to Windows protocols (ie SMB). I have found that
the Mac Finder will frequently go into conniptions and freeze up or
otherwise get snarky when sharing files over Windows shares.

I run a FreeBSD server as a NAS and when I added the Netatalk package
and enabled AFP (over TCP), all my random Finder issues disappeared.

Re: GESO Garry

Larry Colen wrote:

I'm afraid that my model is nowhere near as attractive as the recently

I did a photoshoot today in my backyard studio. Garry saw my post on a
website that I was looking for people to practice portraiture on.

They
worked a lot better.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157622663186590/

Feedback is appreciated.

I think these all look very good, Larry. I prefer the first and the
third, with the 1st getting the nod for a very natural expression. I
must say you get really nice even light from your canopy. And you are
so lucky to be able to do outside portraits with a redwood background!
(Any outside portraits I do right now would involve raincoats and bare
trees.)

My problem with the flash shots is just that I think the lighting is
*too* even. I think you want to reveal more character, especially with
male subjects, so you could use overall even light to illuminate the
scene and some hard light from a smaller source angled to give his face
more definition.

Just my 2 cents, discounted for my own noob level. :-)

Re: NAS

2009-10-28 Thread Cory Waters
I built an Unraid NAS a few months ago and it's doing fine. I think the
free version is limited to three drives (two data and one parity drive).
The box is booting from the OS on a USB stick. I built a Freenas box
last year with a P3 motherboard but the throughput was way too slow for
the job. I put it down to the really really old chip set. Freenas has
a lot more options and gadgets than unraid but all I really needed was
storage on my network so I went with simple.

or so NAS box or device to live on my at-home 1GBps Ethernet LAN.
Right now, I'm keeping the archive on a set of external (eSATA and
USB) hard drives. I'm finding that it'd be convenient to keep a copy
online all of the time. I've been happy with the 4-drive RAID 10 in
my main machine, but I want to put the online archive on a separate
box of some sort. Any recommendations on gear to get or to avoid?
I'm thinking I'd do another 4-drive RAID 10 setup with 500 GB (or
maybe 1TB) drives commodity 7200 RPM SATA-II drives.

You appear to have put up two new versions of the image!

This was your original:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_LBVQqSnxnVs/SuTFA-InhVI/CbQ/5jg3p3PN0sY/s1600-h/1.jpg

and this appears to be one with auto-levels applied:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_LBVQqSnxnVs/SueX-Vo9ZaI/Ccg/9KTOqzg9qaA/s1600-h/1.jpg

which has definitely cleared the haze, although perhaps
it might be improved by a little less saturation.

I don't know what you did to get this one:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_LBVQqSnxnVs/SueYRm2p8dI/Cco/4Vwk41ZGW4c/s1600-h/1.jpg

but whatever it was, I don't like it - I think this is
the weakest of the three versions.

There is also the argument that a mac last for many more years than a pc. They
told me that overall my mac would last approx. 6 years. I may need to
eventually get an external hard drive but the equipment part will last. When my
dad figured out how much it costs and how many years it will last it was
approx. 75 cents per day to own the machine... The guy at the mac store told me
the same thing. I asked why I couldn't just pay him 75 cents per day as long
as the machine worked. He really didn't take well to that idea.

so lucky to be able to do outside portraits with a redwood background!
(Any outside portraits I do right now would involve raincoats and bare
 trees.)

Those could add character.

My problem with the flash shots is just that I think the lighting is
*too* even. I think you want to reveal more character, especially with
male subjects, so you could use overall even light to illuminate the
scene and some hard light from a smaller source angled to give his face
 more definition.

The same has been observed about some of my earlier portraits. Working
without the low ceilings makes it a bit easier to get lighting which
isn't quite so flat. I should maybe try to use the key light without
the umbrella.

Just my 2 cents, discounted for my own noob level. :-)

Noob just makes it harder to figure out how to fix it, but you can
still tell what you do and don't like. And that's assuming you really
are any more of a noob than me.

Is the orange light coming from a gelled strobe, or the sunset? I suspect
that its a strobe off to camera right, because the background is too
evenly lit for it to be from a fill.

I just went back to the main page and see that you're using a gold
reflector.

The model is gorgeous, the pose is nice and I pretty much like the
level of lighting, but I find the weird mix of color balance a little
unsettling.

As I see it:
There's sunlight on her left shoulder, from behind. That would be
color balanced with the sand.
Most of the light on her face is from a gold reflector, which seems a
bit too gold to me.
Her right arm and leg are in shadow, and color balanced a bit closer
to the background.

Am I close?

The warm lighting is nice, but maybe a touch too much of a good thing.
I'm also curious how it would look in black and white.

There's also something weird about the out of focus background when I
look at the large version of the photo, it doesn't seem so odd looking
on the smaller one.

 Enjoy.

That's rubbish. My first PC is over 10 years old now and still ticking along
on all original equipment.
My second one is still in service, at 7 years of age, and my third one,
which is now my back-up box still is working fine, although I had to replace
a power supply that failed. (It turned out to be a cheap piece of junk, the
replacement is good)
As with everything, you get what you pay for. Mac is pretty much all
proprietary, even with the switch to intel chips. You don't get to pick and
choose component brands, you take what Apple gives you, and they aren't
skimping.
PCs have a much broader range of usable components, some very good, some
very very bad. People choose to buy the cheapest crap they can, load an OS
onto it and then watch their hardware melt down.
Buy quality components and PC's are reliable machines, and are still less
money than a Mac.
Often, it isn't a machine going soft that causes it to be taken out of
service so much as the computer world just advances far enough that it
doesn't make sense to keep using the thing.

Exactly.

I like the look of the new Macbooks. But I've just got a new notebook PC
(to replace my 6-year-old workhorse). For below the price of a Mac mini
I've got a 17 1920x1200 display, a dual-core CPU, 4GB of RAM a 500GB
hard drive. Admittedly you have to keep your eyes open to find a deal
like that (a special from TigerDirect; the regular street price for this
system is a lot closer to the price for a Macbook), but the deal savings
would pay for another nice lens ...

Re: OT PC Surgery

2009-10-28 Thread P N Stenquist
Most of that isn't true. And PCs are just as capable in terms of photo
editing software as Macs. But a whole generation of photographers and
art directors grew up on Macs, so they are still predominant in the
graphic arts trades.

The main advantage of a Mac these days is that there are far fewer
viruses and spyware out there to haunt your computer. Macs still don't
seem to be a target for the idiots. And most who use both platforms
consider the Mac interface quite a bit less clumsy than a PC.

The mouse on my iMac is actually a four button version with a scroll

I think some of what requires a right click and menu choice on a PC

and USB) hard drives. I'm finding that it'd be convenient to keep a
copy online all of the time. I've been happy with the 4-drive RAID 10
in my main machine, but I want to put the online archive on a
separate box of some sort. Any recommendations on gear to get or to
avoid? I'm thinking I'd do another 4-drive RAID 10 setup with 500 GB
(or maybe 1TB) drives commodity 7200 RPM SATA-II drives.

This doesn't count as an NAS, but I've had a Drobo ticking away quite

i do this, because i have other things besides storage that i keep
online 24/7 (FileMaker Server and my iTunes library, specifically)

my attached storage is in a dual-drive FireWire enclosure sold by OWC
(macsales.com); it's very quiet; the fan is high quality and there's
enough isolation in the enclosure that the loudest things are the soft
clunks when the heads move; by contrast, i also have a Western Digital
dual-drive enclosure that i'm loathe to turn on because of the horrible fan

for Mac users where a NAS does makes sense, a decent approach is a Time

drive; i have a 1TB unit which does automatic backups of my partner's laptop

My guess would be that's because W7 is trying hard to be
 device-

 your

Most of that isn't true. And PCs are
just as capable in terms of photo editing
 software as Macs.
But a whole generation of photographers and art
 directors
grew up on Macs, so they are still predominant in
 the
   graphic arts trades.

The main advantage of a Mac these days is that
 there are
far fewer viruses and spyware out there to haunt
 your
computer. Macs still don't seem to be a target
 for the
idiots. And most who use both platforms consider
 the Mac
interface quite a bit less clumsy than a PC.

Re: OT: Twitter client for Mac OS X

I use Twitter to follow news, e.g., pentaxusers, leica_camera,
japanexposures, naraneko (Portuguese) and some photographers who
'tweet'. I guess I could use other ways to follow the news, but I got
used to this method.

BTW, I am sure that I have nothing important to say, so I don't
'tweet' (I have made seven 'tweets' exchanged with my only allowed
follower, my older brother :-)

My opinion about these kind of 'social networks', if anyone cares, is
that they are a loss of my precious time, but I presume some people
find them useful. I prefer socializing in a 'café' drinking a coffee
(Portuguese/Italian version), beer, wine, plain water, etc :-)

I'm unimpressed by the whole thing. There's no storage space anywhere,
and so the minute you drive anywhere everything ends up in a heap by
the back doors. The big screen catches your eye, but what's the colour

downfall tonight though, I can't seem to play command and conquer on here.

I can agree with what you said here too. I have a desktop that I bought in
2000 that works just fine except a disk is stuck in one of the drives, and
nothing much works on ME anymore, I tend to forget about it unless I need
music

There is also the argument that a mac last for many more
years than a pc. They told me that overall my mac would last
approx. 6 years.  I may need to eventually get an
external hard drive but the equipment part will last. When
my dad figured out how much it costs and how many years it
will last it was approx. 75 cents per day to own the
machine... The guy at the mac store told me the same
thing.  I asked why I couldn't just pay him 75 cents
per day as long as the machine worked.  He really
didn't take well to that idea.

That's rubbish. My first PC is over 10 years old now and
still ticking along on all original equipment.
My second one is still in service, at 7 years of age, and
my third one, which is now my back-up box still is working
fine, although I had to replace a power supply that failed.
(It turned out to be a cheap piece of junk, the replacement
 is good)
As with everything, you get what you pay for. Mac is pretty
much all proprietary, even with the switch to intel chips.
You don't get to pick and choose component brands, you take
what Apple gives you, and they aren't skimping.
PCs have a much broader range of usable components, some
very good, some very very bad. People choose to buy the
cheapest crap they can, load an OS onto it and then watch
 their hardware melt down.
Buy quality components and PC's are reliable machines, and
are still less money than a Mac.
Often, it isn't a machine going soft that causes it to be
taken out of service so much as the computer world just
advances far enough that it doesn't make sense to keep using
 the thing.

I really like this, Christine. The colors and composition are great; and
the woman is =just= enough out of place in this scene (heavy, probably
older Eastern-European appearing figure in an American semi-urban setting)
to be really intriguing.

Were you working in Western Europe at the time? ;)

I wish!

Well composed timely shot, Christine.

I also particularly liked the contrast of the purple scarf with the
trees. Very nice.

I also noticed that it was shot with the DA40.

Yep, very much like the DA 40, but I still haven't shot enough with it to
have the frame boundaries clear in my head yet. Sometimes I'm surprised by
the fact that I have to move in closer than originally anticipated. I'll
get there; I'm just not shooting enough with it. Cheers, Christine

Does mac offer a real two button mouse yet?

Every time I've asked that question, I've been told you can use any kind
of mouse you want with a Mac, as long as it's USB. I couldn't get it to
work on the school's Macs when I tried it though. Or at least I couldn't
get the right button to function. Maybe there's something you have to
set up that I couldn't access.

My personal experience though is the Mac interface is not as user
friendly as Windoze. And I am NOT a fan of Windoze by any means.

I started off with DOS, and came to Windoze by way of OS/2 - I think IBM
did a better job stealing Xerox's Alto GUI than either Micro$oft or Apple.

But, while IBM was a great technology company, their marketing SUX ...
although I think their anti-trust consent decree hampered them in the PC
market more than anything else. They hesitated too often and too long
for fear of running afoul of the Justice Department again.

they still offer the Mighty Mouse (now called Apple Mouse due to

but on the older model the way it works is not comfortable for some users

i have used non-Apple, multi-button mice on Macs since before USB
existed; support for right click and scroll wheels is totally seamless
nowadays, so i'm puzzled by William's experience
