After consulting with some of my infinitely more knowledgeable
Facebook friends, one seems fairly confident that it might be a Pegaso

Aside from that, everyone seems fairly stumped.

Good luck!

Made me think of the new pair of shoes I wore once last week, and
Mr. Right is now missing the top 1/2 inch of the heel support. The
missing pieces (from the shoe) are now sitting between the up-arrow
and the End key on my keyboard, thinking I might glue and tape them
back on so I can continue to use the shoes.

Plus anytime I show the parts to my Pitt/Am. Eskimo bitch Sakoda, she
drops her ears back, head down, eyes rolled up to look at me for an

All the used and worn shoes that were lined up with these remain

Besides having a second image of that particular body style, in print,
the two are the only pics I've seen of the camera with the lens mount
mounted to the body with 4 screws in the lens to body plate.

But I did write the seller about the discrepancy between his text
saying the body was number 101 area (?) and the serial number on
the body cap of 1010215. I know the caps get swapped out from time to
time but to have the same eye only P engraved on it makes me pretty
sure the cap is the teller of tales. Unless (Dario?) the cameras have
the serial number engraved elsewhere, like under the baseplate or top
cap.

The motor drive version has the serial number engraved on top of the
cap as normal, and it's 1233102, which leads one to think that the MD
Prototype was made from an off the assembly line camera some tome
after sales began. Or, it's just a used one from anywhere that
replaced a damaged original top cap. The base plate on that babe is
the only thing marked MOTOR DRIVE.

Now that might be costing Pentax a lot of good will, but they may have

Re: darkroom wish list

2010-10-04 Thread Gasha

Developing film is easy.
You WILL get results in any case :)

To get some quality, then you need practice.

My recipe:
1) go into toilet, put tank on WC, swich off all lights nearby. get
towel to seal remaining light leaks
2) load film (i mostly develop 120 film), sometimes it takes long, if
film curls a lot
3) go to bathroom, measure +20C water by mixing cold+hot, fill 2-3
liters of water
4) fill 330ml water in glas jar, mix with 3ml rodinal (1:100), pour into
tank, mix 1 minute
5) find some marker and write down start time, semi-stand process up to
60 minutes (+10 minutes is OK), go and watch your favorite TV programm,
sometimes mix if you do not forget :)

6) discard rodinal, wash 2-3 times with water
7) take bottle with fixer, pour in, and wait 5 minutes, mixing
sometimes, then open tank lid, look if film is still milky wait
another 2-5 minutes. do not forget to put back fixer into bottle, do not
discard

8) mess with lot of tap water for some 10-15 minutes, to wash all chemicals
9) get bottle with distilled water as last bath for film
10) hang it for drying, wondering what you have shot, and what went wrong

Perhaps because I learned to load reels by practicing in the light with my eyes
closed. I used an old roll of junk film. If I had trouble loading it, I'd open
my eyes to see what went wrong. After I became proficient at doing it with my
eyes closed, I went into the darkroom with exposed film and had no problems.
That was fifty years ago. To this day, I still load reels with my eyes closed,

Your question was for developing film (not making prints) so I'm going

(from the shoe) are now sitting between the up-arrow and the End key on my
keyboard, thinking I might glue and tape them back on so I can continue to
 use the shoes.

Plus anytime I show the parts to my Pitt/Am. Eskimo bitch Sakoda, she drops
her ears back, head down, eyes rolled up to look at me for an instant, then
 averts them and slinks away.

All the used and worn shoes that were lined up with these remain untouched.

I found the opposite to be true. The bag's fabric always got in the way a

Re: monitor shopping

2010-10-04 Thread Christine Nielsen
Thanks, Bob. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer -- I'm
finding it quite challenging to get a grip on the many facets of color
management.

So, my intended use is also for photoshop and printing, with one
caveat: I have no desire to do my own printing (my head hurts enough
as it is). The goal is come up with a system whereby I can reliably
send out files to be printed, with minimal frustration. I am a bit
reluctant to try to future proof my decision now, especially if my
current set-up won't benefit from the DisplayPort upgrade. I figure
by the time the rest of my equipment is capable, the corresponding
monitors should be more mainstream affordable than they are now,
anyway.

But, I haven't ruled anything out yet. One thing that seems to make
sense from what I've been reading, is to go with the bundled
monitor/calibration system, which is also available for the P221...

Thanks again,

If your use does not involve printing and is used solely as a display, any
 monitor would work.
These new monitors allow setting the illumination down to a level suitable
for proofing images in Photoshop. I presently have a Samsung 2233 that is
usable at lower levels - my Dell 2207 is not.
Some of the newer notebook computers support DisplayPort. I do not know if
they support 10-bit color. In my case, I would have to purchase a new card
for my tower. With the DisplayPort, the PA241 monitor's internal 14-bit LUT
are adjusted during calibration. The P221 relies on the video card's 8-bit
 LUT.
CS4 and 5 support 10-bit monitor color output.
The Macbook Pro does have a mini DisplayPort video but does not support
10-bit color - future models may as these 10-bit monitors become more
main-stream. It still will program the monitor during calibration.
Prior to making your decision, Google each of the monitors and look for
 calibration and viewing issues.
   I hope this helps.

having the DisplayPort any use to me right now?   Using my camera

Re: PESO: Red-spotted Purple

  Thanks, Toine!

On at least some of the butterflies, there are a few small, dark red
spots on the topside of the wings, but they're hard to see even under
good lighting. This one was just a more intense shade of black than the
pictures I've seen on the web -- and those pictures were very harshly
lit to reveal the red spots, and thus, looked pretty ugly.

I found the opposite to be true. The bag's fabric always got in the way a bit,

Although, they do get introduced to some Speedotrons, Photogenics Alien
Bees during Summer Semester just before second year begins. We also used
Vivitar 285s dedicated speed lights (if you could afford them).

Second year students can also use hot lights if they want to, as long as
they don't deprive the first year students.

Yup, this is what we do in school too, but not necessarily to punish
the freshmen but to help them visualize their photos. Which is
ultimately the advantage of continuous lighting; pure strobes (i.e.,
flash) does not give you that unless it has a modeling light--which
the Falconeyes provide (which I have experience with).

The thing I'm learning however, is the modeling lights cannot be relied
upon to set lighting ratios.

They show you *WHERE* the light will fall, but even the ones with
variable power modeling lights are not proportional to the power of the
strobe.

The big difference here is the arm with the spot-metering cell.

But I did write the seller about the discrepancy between his text
saying the body was number 101 area (?) and the serial number on
the body cap of 1010215.

1020215 is in the 101 area (meaning around 101), isn't it?

I know the caps get swapped out from time to
time but to have the same eye only P engraved on it makes me pretty
sure the cap is the teller of tales. Unless (Dario?) the cameras have
the serial number engraved elsewhere, like under the baseplate or top
cap.

That 1010215 must be the S.No. No more serials needed.

The motor drive version has the serial number engraved on top of the
cap as normal, and it's 1233102, which leads one to think that the MD
Prototype was made from an off the assembly line camera some tome
after sales began. Or, it's just a used one from anywhere that
replaced a damaged original top cap.

 Agree.

The base plate on that babe is
the only thing marked MOTOR DRIVE.

 Like standard production SP MD's.

 K-x, DAL 50-200mm, f/9, ISO 400, 1/400, Program mode

I desaturated everything except blue and cyan -- and kicked those up a few
 notches for dramatic effect.

Comments, critiques, and free samples of non-perishable goods are heartily

I'm not much for partial desaturation. I find it gimmicky and it
detracts from a photo.

But that's just me.

Still, I attempt to put my prejudices aside, and I have to say it's a
very good photo! Having had a hand at attempting to photograph
butterflies recently, I know they're not an easy catch.

Thanks, Godfrey. Didn't know about the Adobe tutorials. I'll check
them out.

A couple questions regarding the above -- answers probably obvious,
but not knowing gives me pause: If I import junk, e.g., if I simply
import everything from my card all at once into one folder, can I
delete the junk without gumming up Lightroom's record keeping. Two,
can I break such a global import down into categories after
importing? I'm asking about the original images, not edited
versions.

If you're using Lightroom to import and manage your photos, you probably
should use lightroom when it comes time to delete the unwanted images.

If you do that, Lightroom should have no problems keeping the records
straight.

Old friends had their first child 30+ years ago.
We visited them (out-of-town) long before he could talk.
After a time, he began to fuss in his playpen and get cranky.
When I took out the camera and pointed it at him, he became all smiles.
His mom said they had noticed the behavior before,
whenever grandpa took out his camera for a few photos. :-)

You didn't really have to do a partial desaturated, the rocks were
pretty monochrome to begin with. I think it would have benefited from a

I'd really like to get a DA 17-70mm. But from all accounts that

making reliable auto focus a must. The SDM controversy just becomes one
more reason for my money to stay in my pocket.

Peter, since you're talking about post-warranty period and substantial

Pentax to be legally forced to admit that they dropped an egg like
Bill Robb keeps saying???

It varies by jurisdiction depending on consumer protection laws, but
Pentax cannot afford for it to get to that point. Pentax has always had
a reputation for quality and good value for the money. If they lose that

If Pentax's customers lose the perception that Pentax offers superior

  Thanks, P.J.

I see what you're getting at there. I guess it's just me, but I find
the dusty coating on the rocks grating -- almost as unattractive as the
mud itself in this context. I probably wouldn't mind it as much if it
were a toad or snake. But, for some reason, when I look at the
butterfly, and then see the rocks around it, my eyes say, Get off those
dirty rocks, butterfly! What's the matter with you?

And I thought about doing a tighter crop, but I'm trying to get into the
habit of minimizing my cropping -- partially to reinforce the idea of
filling the frame as much as possible, and partly for purposes of
entering contests or uploading to stock photo sites where there may be a
minimum resolution and/or a prohibition on re-sized images.

But, I do take your point, and appreciate the input. I do agree that
your crop does look better, so I'll give it a whirl in another rendition.

Thanks again,

Walt

In that case, you need a dark bag/box for loading your film into the
