You can, with the new firmware, set the rear screen to deep red night
vision colour.
At least that won't blind you when you check your shooting mode.

Another one that I forgot to ask about. With all of my other cameras,
when I'd change the mode (M, Av, TAv, Tv ...) it would briefly display
on the back LCD what the new mode was. Now, that doesn't happen. There
doesn't seem to be a way to see the shooting mode in the dark without
going to the idiot screen on the back that shows everything, shines in
your face and runs the battery down. Am I missing a menu item to show

RE: Coyles in USA

2016-12-03 Thread John Coyle
Hi Ken - thanks, you're welcome! Not sure we had any particular expectations,
but it was certainly
an interesting experience! Because we stayed in South San Francisco, we were
able to see a lot of
the outer suburbs, as well as, thanks to Larry, seeing quite a lot of the
attractions of the area
too. The city itself does have a nice feel in many ways, but the number of
homeless and other
disadvantaged people was quite disturbing: we walked along Howard Street, just
two blocks down from
Market St, and the difference is manifest: tourists and wealth versus poverty
and homelessness.

However, overall, we met some great people, and one day will probably return.

An unusual sign I haven't seen before. Notice its bear, not bare. I've
been
in all the United States

Where was it taken ?

I was really hoping I could get something in for this month, but there
ain't been much tranquility around here for a while. Don't even have
time to get one job complete before something else goes kablooie & my
list of urgent repair projects just keeps growing and growing.

The first three - Matthew Hunt's "Sailboat"; Jack Davis's "Winter's
Grace" and Jan van Wijk's "Sailing Botters" look most tranquil to me.

Remind me again what the 2017 themes are? I checked the submission page
& it's still showing 2016 even after I refreshed the view. I got "Doors"
for January & maybe I'll have something for that, but I'd like to be

Re: VESO: Newest video

FWIW, it's probably not your computer.

Micro$oft nuked Windows Movie Maker about the time Windoze 7 replaced
XP. Although, if you dug hard enough, you could find a version that
would run on Windoze 7, it never worked that well, and it's got
progressively worse under later iterations of Windoze.

Too bad. It was originally one of the few Micro$oft offerings that
didn't suck.

Interesting comments.

I'm happy in most respects for using the K3 & 55-300mm for horse events. Why
I'd prefer the K1 & DFA 150-450, apart from the extra megapixels, doesn't
really trouble me about capturing movement - it's light. The K1 performs
better at higher ISO, and some of the venues I go to, particularly in the
morning, can be bright sunshine on one side and really dark on the other.
They are often held in large indoor schools (although one side is often
without a wall, just roof supports) and photography is only often allowed
from one side, and of course often the side furthest from the action.

When taking pictures of horses in fields, even running around at speed, I'm
usually using a tripod, or leaning on a bale of something. The K3 is fine
for that and the reach of a crop sensor does me a favour.

Cream of the crop: K-1 with DA-L 55-300

2016-12-03 Thread Mark Roberts
Pardon the pun...
Last weekend I also tried out the K-1 with an APS-C crop lens, the
bargain basement DA-L 55-300 f/4-5.8. In crop mode you get ~15
megapixel
images. So how did it work? Here's a shot at 300mm, 1/1000 @ f/6.7
(which is only stopped down about half a stop from wide open at that
focal length), so depth of field is very thin. But where the feathers
of this bird (not the same Gray Jay as my previous shot) are within
DOF the sharpness is astonishing for a plastic-fantastic kit lens that
can be had for $179.00 brand new (from dealers who split up kit
items).

Lots of nice images this month.

My favorites are Matthew Hunt's Sailboat and Drifting Duck by Philip
Northeast.

Thanks for all your efforts, Brian, in creating another great gallery.

I have not found that to be the case. Whether shooting automobiles, athletes or
critters, the K-1 locks focus quickly and consistently, particularly with the
150-450. The K-3 is at least a step behind. Buffer size is the only minus, but
shooting singles or short and infrequent bursts is my workaround.

Thanks Bipin. My choice was really between street photography and equine

OT Update

Hey all

Its been 11 days or so since doing the mac OS 10.11 upgrade. I have
tested out just about everything, i think, and just thought i'd give
my impressions on this new to me system.

Looks nice so far still trying to sort out where some of my Finder
left side shortcuts are ( the today- this week- and this month search
shortcuts that used ot be there in 10.6.8) but i have most back.
Having some issues with PSEL 9 and Word for Mac 2011. They both seem
to cut out at times and i need to restart and then they seem ok. Hope
this does not happen when i start my memoir writings soon. May need to
upgrade to EL 15 maybe, local Staples has a few copies on for $99. LR
4.4 seems stable that's my main concern anyway.

December PUG is Up

2016-12-03 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all,

A great gallery to wind up 2016. Well done, everyone.

Lots of favourites - Matthew's 'Sailboat', Jack's 'Winter's Grace' (pity
it wasn't larger, though), Filip's "Schoonselhof ', Joe's 'In Bruge' and
Bruce's 'Tranquility' are my personal favourites this month.

As usual you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery
there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

Now on to 2017

Street photography enablement.

2016-12-03 Thread Malcolm Smith
I've spent some time taking street photos again, always with a zoom and with
very mixed results.

The next lens I wanted to buy was the DFA 150-450mm, but I really wanted a
prime for street photography. The K1 warrants decent glass. I thought long
and hard, the Black Friday sale helped too, and I've gone for the 31mm LTD.
I've not owned a LTD lens before and I'm delighted after so long to finally
own one. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can achieve with this
combination, and I'm particularly pleased to have a prime lens again and use
my legs as the zoom.

Ah Christmas upon us once more (although the local supermarket thinks that
means the end of September...). Nice photo.

The Orion image makes me jealous, as the light pollution around a major city
where I am makes it almost impossible. Next time I'm in rural Scotland I'll
have a go, assuming it doesn't do the usual heaving down with rain.

After Mark's post today, I found it a pleasant coincidence that with the
K-1 the FA77 is the perfect focal length for photographing all of Orion.
I was also pleased to see that the Orion Nebula is actually
recognizable even with the 77, I'm going to have to try with a longer
lens. If someone has the 150-450, I'd love to see what you could with
that on the Orion Nebula and Andromeda.
