Very impressive. A lily trotter's paradise. It is surprising that some of
the other tropical plants can grow well so far south.

Actually Ann and Jay, I sort o liked that lighter cap at the top, but
primarily, it was the curved upper sections of the reeds that appealed to me.

I agree with Jay - like it quite a bit cropped down so the shore in the
background is out... as it happens, that is how it came up on my screen
first.. I had to
make the image smaller to see what Jay was talking about - my monitor
had done the crop for me ;-)

the size across browser shouldn't change... but if you had intentionally
or accidentaly done a resize once when in one of them, you might not
realize that..

(speaking from experience)

I look at all the pesos in firefox, because when I click on a link in
thunderbird it opens up in firefox because thundnerbird is mozillas
email system.

Whenever anyone in photo.net posts I have to shrink the images to see
them by quite a bit, likewise with yours... If I don't change the view
to less than 100% I can't see the whole image.

no reason to change what you are doing at all

Nice set, too bad you were on the wrong side of the track wall.

Passing on a critique I got about my attempts at race photography, a bit
more variety in the shutter speed would have been nice. I have no
complaints about the technical quality, but they start to all look the
same. Of course there's a difference between when you have to get a
decent shot every time, and it doesn't matter if you blow a bunch of
shots in the quest to get a great shot.

No matter how good your gear is this kind of photography takes skill.
Practice is vital for this kind of work and I very much noticed how
out of practice I am. My race day photos would have been much better
if I'd bought a three day pass and photographed all the practice and
qualifying sessions first – just a couple of days practice would have
helped me get back a lot of my motorsports photography technique.

I guess that means you need to spend more time practicing at the local
races.

Still a fun weekend.

Yes, really nice gallery overall - but I do have a favorite this time..
Bruce Nagel's shot of the new and old pier -
just a fascinating scene... Pat's marker also particularly floats my boat.

A smaller gallery this month, but one that includes several interesting and
effective images.

Thanks, Brian, for another great job in putting the gallery together!

My personal favorites include:

Ann's "Going Up." How many times I have taken that shot, without ever
achieving the precision and pleasing balance Ann created>

Ken Waller's "Bentonite Hills." Wonderful interpretation of the theme,
with pleasing color and a mesmerizing overall effect.

Luiz Filipe's "Steel." Novel, fascinating and expertly captured.

It's been a busy week with the end of the semester coinciding with the
release of the PDML Photo Annual, so it's taken me a long time to
throw together a gallery of photos from last week's race. It's a bit
rough and hurried but it should give you an idea of what the event was
like.

http://www.robertstech.com/temp/AustinMotoGP2017/

Equipment was the K-1 and K-5 for bodies, the K-1 being used with the
FA*300/2.8 and a Sigma EX 1.4x teleconverter. The K-5 was used with
the DA 12-24 and the DA-L 55-300.

Things I learned:

It's much easier shooting these events when you have press
credentials. Bob Capa was right: If your pictures aren't good enough
you aren't close enough.

It's much harder shooting these events when you have press
credentials. It's work. You can't stop and enjoy the race. And you
have a shedload of images to sort through, edit and upload on a short
deadline.

Always have your gear organized well before the event. I meant to take
the Pentax F 1.7x teleconverter but grabbed the Sigma by mistake. I
could have used the extra reach of the 1.7x and I think the Pentax is
a little sharper. The Pentax is definitely faster focusing (I can
actually notice a difference between the faster bikes/riders and the
slower ones because the slower ones are more likely to be in focus!)

Still a fun weekend.

Re: PESO: Dogwood

2017-05-01 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Larry, Jack and Paul! I appreciate your comments.

First, the background is a blue sheet from my "Photo Studio in a Box":

https://smile.amazon.com/LimoStudio-Photography-Studio-Lighting-AGG349/dp/B005CX9S8A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1493646352=8-1=photo+studio+in+a+box

The kit also has white, red and grey backgrounds.
I cut off a few blossoms while I was trimming trees in the front yard for
the express purpose of playing around with this system.

Most of the shots were centered when I took them, but I cropped them to
bring the center of attention a bit to one side. I have been frequently,
and justifiably, been criticized here and elsewhere for making my images
too centered and two "square."
Here is one that I left centered, as It filled the screen anyway:
https://www.photo.net/photo/18381125/

I also tried a vertical crop a couple of times, but didn't care for the
result, probably because the stem was too short.

Another thought would be, if the
stem is suitably formed, to turn
the bloom so the stem comfortably
supports a vertical crop.

Nice shot. Vibrant and interesting. I'm torn on centering, as someone
suggested. I might prefer it as a vertical with the blossom in the upper 2/3rds
of frame. Centering would make it somewhat ordinary I think.
